  • Past And Present: Toyota at Le Mans

toyota-at-le-mans-THUMBThis past weekend Toyota has returned to the Le Mans with the goal of winning the biggest prize in international sports car racing. For a second year, Toyota Racing TS030 Hybrid will be aiming for victory. The model successfully won in three other FIA World Endurance Championship events in 2012.

To go further into details, the model is the third in a series of superbly engineered Toyota Le Mans cars. The sequence began with TS010 in the early 1990s, which took advantage of the new technical regulations that allowed the most powerful “Group C” race cars to run with a non-turbo 3.5-litre V10 engine. This unit was utilized at that time in Formula 1.

Furthermore, the car achieved a great success by winning the opening race at Monza in 1992. Nonetheless, at Le Mans, the team had to settle for a hard-fought second place. In 1993 it returned at the race for a one-off appearance.

Five years later, after a time of research and development, Toyota returned with a full-blooded entry -the TS020, better known as the Toyota GT-One. It was both beautiful and fast, and was designed by Andre de Cortanze. As a matter of fact, back in those days it was one of the most advanced race cars.

What is very specific about this vehicle is that it was entirely created with the utilization of CAD techniques and in addition it included a carbon fibre monocoque, which helped keep its weight down to a svelte 900 kg. In addition, it was powered by the refined Toyota twin-turbo V8, which was capable of generating around 600 hp (440 kW).

The race vehicle made a debut in 1998 Le Mans and won a second place on the grid and held a strong second in the race until being forced into retirement in the last hour of the race. Even more, in the following year, Toyota GT-One was unstoppable – it locked out the first three places on the grid.

In the present days, Toyota returned to the FIA World Endurance Championship last year with the TS030 Hybrid. The car is an instance of advanced hybrid power technology applied for the highest levels of international motorsport.

One of the highlights of its Toyota Hybrid System-Racing powertrain is a regenerative braking system. The latter allows 300 hp (220 kW) of additional boost to be generated from energy recovered under braking and deceleration.

With this vehicle, the team claimed three race wins in its debut championship season. However, it did not succeed for a victory at Le Mans. This year the Toyota’s Racing team is fielding two 2013-specification cars, piloted by the three-man squads of Alex Wurz/Nicolas Lapierre/Kazuki Nakajima and Anthony Davidson/Sébastien Buemi/Stéphane Sarrazin.

  • Spa Debut For The Updated Toyota TS030 Hybrid

2013-Toyota-Le-Mans-Hybrid-Challenger-THUMB2013 Toyota TS030 Hybrid – the Le Mans Hybrid Challenger is going to make its official premiere at this weekend’s Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, which is the second round of this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship.

In Belgium, the team responsible for the success of the No7 machine is Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima. Following their podium finish at the series-opener in Silverstone, Anthony Davidson, Stéphane Sarrazin and Sébastien Biemi will return in the 2012-spec’ No8 car.

The main changes done on the updated TS030 Hybrid are regarding its chassis and powertrain, thanks to which the car now delivers enhanced performance, reliability and serviceability. Additionally, a revised aerodynamic package has been also included. In this case we are speakin about an updated monocoque, which improves performance while mitigating the impact of new 2013 regulations of enhanced minimum weight (by 15 kg).

The powertrain of this Toyota Racing model utilizes a unique super capacitor which automatically generates 300 hp (220 kW) of boost, on top of the 530 hp (390 kW) produced by the 3.4-litre normally aspirated V8 petrol engine. Moreover, the powertrain was finely tuned in order to bring about better power, efficiency, management of the components used and reliability.

  • 2013 Toyota Le Mans Hybrid Challenger Revealed

2013-Toyota-Le-Mans-Hybrid-Challenger-THUMBToyota Racing has just revealed the revised TS030 Hybrid which carries the name 2013 Toyota Le Mans Hybrid Challenger. The latter will participate in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) this Motor-sport season.

The racing team has begun the first full test of the new 2013 TS030 Hybrid at Paul Ricard in southern France. Last year, the team achieved great success which includes three victories in just six races. The same hopes are expected for the new season and there is the ambition to win both the Le Mans 24 Hours and the WEC title.

Toyota Racing team will again use Toyota Hybrid System – to be more precise the Racing powertrain, which was created especially by company’s motorsport division in Higashifuji. To go even further into details, the unique super capacitor-based hybrid system generates 300 hp (224kW) of boost automatically, on top of the 530hp (395kW) generated by a 3.4-litre normally aspirated V8 petrol unit.

In addition, it was revealed that Toyota’s motorsport division has fine-tuned the new powertrain in order to improve power, efficiency, management of component usage and reliability. Furthermore, the race-winning TS030 Hybrid chassis has also been updated, thus delivering enhanced performance.

2013 Toyota Le Mans Hybrid Challenger includes also a revised aerodynamic package. In it is featured an updated monocoque, which will offer better performance and at the same time will reduce the weight of the car by circa 15 kg.

The complete WEC schedule is the following:

    • Silverstone, UK (14 April)
    • Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium (4 May)
    • Le Mans, France (22 June)
    • Sao Paulo, Brazil (1 September)

  • Toyota TS030 Hybrid at the Le Mans

Toyota-TS030-Hybrid-THUMBToyota TS030 Hybrid is the model with which the Japanese automaker will return to the Le Mans 24-hour race the forthcoming week. On the race track we will see not one but two of these competing hybrids.

Toyota aims with these hybrid vehicles to write a new page in the history of the legendary twice-around-the-clock enduro, with the help with their unique technologies. Both TS030 Hybrids display their new Toyota hybrid-blue livery.

Furthermore, both racecars are equipped with the 2012 THS-R (Toyota Hybrid System – Racing) powertrain. The latter is designed to deliver optimum performance and includes theall-new V8 3.4-litre normally-aspirated petrol engine and hybrid system with capacitor storage.

Of course, being a true Toyota’s full hybrid road car, the TS030’s energy is regenerated under braking and the vehicle can work in electric-only mode, thus achieving zero emissions and zero fuel consumption.

This means that it either delivers faster lap times through improving speed on the exit of corners, or one chooses to save fuel by using the internal combustion engine less on corner exit and allowing the hybrid system to compensate.

Few days more to go and we will eventually understand whether the goal of Toyota is achievable, and it is to show that the TS030 Hybrid is the fastest hybrid car on the grid.
