  • Toyota finally reveals details about the second-gen hydrogen Mirai machine

2021 Toyota MiraiToyota was one of the first brands to introduce a mass-production electric vehicle back in 1997 with the debut of Prius Hybrid. Almost 20 years later, in 2015, the Mirai was unveiled – the first hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle. And as it seems, Toyota team is ready for the next step – presenting a revised version of the Mirai (meaning “future” in Japanese).

The new futuristic machine is based on brand’s premium rear-wheel drive platform and debuts a dramatic design with tons of interior goodies. Expected to go on sale in late 2020, the vehicle will also feature Toyota’s hydrogen FCEV powertrain technology. Let’s find out more, shall we?

At its core, Mirai is an electric vehicle, but it doesn’t need to be plugged in in order to charge. The FCEV system generates its own electricity onboard from hydrogen and oxygen, with water as the only emission.

In terms of styling, new Mirai is based on a rear-wheel platform, which is a major departure from the original front-wheel drive version. This new setup allows for a highly rigid body that is lower, longer and wider, with its bold stance accentuated by exclusive 20-inch alloys. The design is definitely more aerodynamic, sexy and elegant.

  • Toyota Back to the Future Mirai Concept or Who Brought the Outdated Gullwings Back?

Toyota Back to the Future Mirai Front and Side ViewToyota Back to the Future Mirai is one of the cars exhibited at Toyota’s booth at the SEMA Show this week. Surprisingly enough, the car is called “Back to the Future” as a part of the Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy, and this obviously equals removing the four doors and adding gullwings. Considering they are definitely out of date, as modern and cool as they might look to some, this car (in my opinion) will never see anything but the red carpet on special events like this… No, not even in the near future.

In fact, this vehicle ‘looks ready for the fourth dimension’, but if we were still living in the 80s. But if you are fan of the series (not like me unfortunately), then you should definitely go and see the Back to the Future-inspired Mirai.

Toyota Back to the Future Mirai Gullwings Opened Rear View

Despite the outdated and erroneous gullwings, this redesigned SEMA-bound Mirai has some advantageous features. First, I have to mention that the car is reworked by the specialists at MV Designz, who helped Toyota re-desing Doc Brown’s time machine.

So what’s in this Mirai “time machine”? It includes a list of modifications that need to be addressed. Besides the conversion of the body style (from four-door to two-door), the car is defined by 19-inch custom “Infinity” LED wheels and tires, that look pretty good in the dark. By the way, there is a blue LED lightning added throughout the entire vehicle.

What is more, MV Designz decided to equip the hybrid with custom air-ride suspension and applied brushed-aluminum paint scheme to the exterior. Other cool things about this Mirai concept feature heads-up destination clock display, integrated tablet replacing original equipment head unit as well as flux capacitor housed in a custom center console.

Well, it seems not that bad after all… Or wait a minute! Aren’t these gullwings entirely inappropriate?

  • Toyota Opens up Hydrogen Fuel Cell Patents [VIDEO]

toyota-announcement-b1240At the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, Toyota announced that it opens “the door to the hydrogen future” by sharing freely more than 5500 hydrogen fuel cell patents. This patent release announcement is very similar to a suggestion made by Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk in June, last year. Nevertheless, it is rather important as by doing this, the Toyota gives pretty much carte blanche to different automakers around the world to build more and more fuel cell cars, which will result in requesting more hydrogen stations.

The list of royalty-free fuel cell patents is comprised of 1,970 patents which have to do with fuel cell stacks, 290 related to high-pressure hydrogen tanks, 3,350 associated with fuel cell system software control and 70 patents that cover hydrogen production and supply.

In relation to this highly important statement, Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations at Toyota in a statement pointed out that; “When good ideas are shared, great things can happen.”

Interestingly enough, the announcement was made after the introduction of the new Toyota Mirai which receives an estimated range of about 300 miles from its hydrogen tanks. In addition to this, hydrogen tanks takes around five minutes to be refilled, which is something similar to gasoline-fueled vehicles. Finally, the hydrogen-powered car by Toyota went on sale in Japan in December and will go on sale in the US and Europe and in late 2015.

  • Toyota Mirai Achieves Maximum Power Well Above 100kW

Only couple of days ago Toyota announced its ground-breaking Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Car without giving too much information about it. Now we already have the specific characteristics of the car so you will know what to expect out of it.

First of all, Toyota Mirai indicates the beginning of a new era of vehicles. Since it is all about better future in a clean world and environment, the car uses hydrogen to produce electric power which results in delivering better environmental performance. Still though the convenience and the ultimate driving pleasure are not sacrificed. Drivers still receive the best possible efficiency and quality.

The new Toyota uses the Toyota Fuel Cell System (TFCS) that combines fuel cell and hybrid technologies. It includes Toyota’s new proprietary fuel cell stack and high-pressure hydrogen tanks. The TFCS is more energy efficient than internal combustion engines and emits no CO2 or pollutants.

Moreover, the hydrogen-powered sedan’s stack has a maximum power output of 153 bhp (114kW) and a maximum torque of 335 Nm (247 ft-lbf). The 3D fine mesh flow channels enhance the efficiency of the car’s electricity generation and ensure uniform generation on the cell surfaces. As a result, this provides the FC stack with compact dimensions, excellent performance and a world-leading power output density estimated at 3.1kW/L. The electric motor is driven by Nickel-metal hydride battery.

The exterior of the Toyota Mirai emphasis on its individuality and sophistication. Even the headlights present high-tech luxury. They gain ultra-thin profile and an in-line arrangement of four LED lights, along with visible heat sinks and other optical components. The trapezoidal shape of the rear profile extends from the license plate surround and continues to the bottom corners of the bumper and out towards the 17-inch aluminium wheels.

Inside the car encompasses a full capacity of balanced style and quietness. The sound absorbing systems and noise-reducing glass for the windscreen and door windows add to the electric motor which works with impressive quietness. The front seats use an integrated cover/seat foaming process to ensure better body fit and hold. Furthermore, the central meter cluster placed on the top of the instrument panel has a speedometer and a multi-information display presented on a high-definition 4.2-inch liquid crystal TFT screen. Customers can choose from three different interior colors, including Warm White.

  • Toyota ‘Mirai’: A Vision From the Future

The confidence and enthusiasm with which the Toyota executives speak about alternative fuels and vehicles really exemplify their aspiration and ambition of achieving something ground-breaking that will set totally innovative benchmarks in the automobile market.

With the announcement of Toyota’s exceptional fuel cell vehicle titled ‘Mirai’, which translated from Japanese literally means ‘future’, the manufacturer plants a cardinal turning point for the automotive industry. With the launch of the car comes the promise of a safer, greener and easier world. The cutting-edge vehicle arrives with no compromises and it knows no boundaries. It has the cruising range of a normal saloon and can be refuelled in less than five minutes. The only emission that comes out is water vapor. The unconventional sedan with its bizarre look is the production version of the FCV Concept, which Toyota released at the Tokyo Motor Show last year.

The new Mirai represents a bold step into a more convenient future. It is absolutely environmentally-friendly car which can reduce our dependence on oil and decrease harm to the environment. The vehicle is said to run on hydrogen that can be produced from pretty much anything. Impressive as it is, Toyota Mirai has a fuel cell that creates so much electricity which can be enough to power a whole house.

Toyota’s new creation is purpose-built around a fuel-cell stack which transforms compressed hydrogen gas into electricity. In consequence, the electricity is congested in batteries and is further used to power a motor that spurs on the front wheels.

The car will cost the equivalent of around $69,000 in Japan. Despite the fact that the U.S. pricing has not been officially announced yet, there are suppositions that the price will be around $50,000.
