  • Toyota GT-86 14R-60 Limited Edition is Production Version of Griffon Concept

Toyota-GT-86-14R-60-Limited-Edition-THUMBToyota GT-86 14R-60 Limited Edition is a production continuation of the Griffon concept which was revealed last year. In fact, it is a super lightweight GT-86 which won’t be seen elsewhere but Japan. Just like the Griffon, this limited edition Toyota is driven by 2.0-liter boxer poweplant. There are no enhancements in its power, meaning that it generates 197 horsepower (145 kW) and 205 Nm (151 pound-feet) of maximum torque.

Nevertheless, the engine was touched slightly and now has new air filter, engine oil cooler, a reinforced clutch, lightweight flywheel, and mechanical limited-slip differential from TRD. The transmission here is the six-speed one, but in the case of GT-86 14R-60 it is improved, with different gearing in first and second and an altered final drive ratio.

Furthermore, the suspension of the model has new coilovers, there is also a V-shaped tower brace in the front and rear. Toyota also took care about the brakes, which were upgraded. In terms of exterior the car is equipped with a body kit that features carbon-fiber roof and huge rear spoiler. 18-inch forged magnesium wheels add to the final look.

The interior of the car gets TRD-branded race seats with four-point harnesses as well as Alcantara. There are no rear seats. This limited edition model will be produced in 100 units only and is intended only for the Japanese market.

  • Kia GT4 Stinger Concept Out Of The Shadows

Kia-GT4-Stinger-Concept-shadowKia-GT4-Stinger-Concept-mediumPure, unadulterated fun is the idea behind the Kia GT4 Stinger Concept which has now gone public in Detroit at the North American Auto Show. An engine at the front, rear-wheel drive, 2+2 seating and an acceptable price. Could eventually Kia be taking on the BRZ and the GT 86? Let’s hope so.

What we do know for sure, however that the GT4 looks amazing. Yeah, it’s a concept and that’s what it’s supposed to look like, but this one does the job particularly good. It’s 169/7 inches long, 74.4 inches wide and just 49.2 inches tall. It sits close to the ground on 275/35R20 Pirelli Pzero performance tires (235 at the front). Consider us more than impressed with the creeping LED lights, the see-through A-pillars, the silky-smooth sculptured body, and the overly simplified back end. It really is a masterfully designed thing. Props to you, Kia Design Center America (KDCA).

Enough admiration, though. It’s time to get serious. Like under-the-hood kind of serious. There’s a real engine hiding in there – it’s Kia’s acclaimed T-GDI 2.0-liter unit tuned to churn out 315 hp. All of that power is sent to the rear wheels via a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. The stopping power is courtesy to the Brembo Gran Turismo 15-inch crossdrilled rotors and four-piston calipers.

The GT4 should be an adrenaline blast in the corners as well, considering the near perfect (52:48) weight distribution, the quick-ratio steering rack and its relatively low unsprung mass which stands at 2,874 pounds.

Small wonder then, that you don’t even get a stereo, nor carpets. Door handles? Nah, try pull straps for a size. “It’s a totally selfish design. The design team at KCDA is full of gearheadsand enthusiasts, and the GT4 Stinger is the perfect car for that kind of crowd.” comments chief designer, Tom Kearns

  • Romeo Ferraris Performance Boost For Toyota GT86

Romeo-Ferraris-Toyota-GT86-shadowRomeo-Ferraris-Toyota-GT86-mediumAlright, picture the following: a couple of years ago you bought a Toyota GT86. At the time it was an affordable RWD car with the right weight distribution and enough power to go sideways. An obvious choice for a gearhead, because that’s essentially the formula reserved for supercars. But now you find yourself in the position of wanting more. Not much more though. Just that extra bit of something to spice things up.

How about a tune up then? Let’s see. Oh, Romeo Ferraris here might have what you are looking for! The Toyota GT86 before you bares a performance kit consisting of a supercharger and an intercooler. After strapping them onto the flat-four Toyota engine, the guys from Romeo Ferraris played around with the ECU and eventually the GT86 yielded 258 hp and more than 260 N/m of torque. That’s a surplus of almost 80 hp and 60 Nm.

There’s not much else out of order with it. Have to keep that low center of gravity in check!

Here’s a video of the finished product guzzling down petrol on a dyno. See if you can detect a distinctiveness of the soundtrack.

  • Toyota GT 86 Sedan [render]

Theophiluschin published some renderings of Toyota GT 86 Sedan. The four-door version is allegedly close to production series. The four-door GT 86 will have a 100 mm extended wheelbase and could be exhibited at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

We expect the same 2.0-liter boxer engine with 200HP (147 kW) and 205Nm (151 lb-ft) with fuel economy of 7.8 litres / 100km for manual models – and even better for automatic versions at just 7.1 litres / 100km.

Probably, there will be an optional hybrid model derived from the Yaris Hybrid-R Concept boasting 272HP (200 kW) and a KERS system similar to this one used for F1 cars.

    Stay tuned!

  • Debut Of Toyota GT 86 TRD Griffon Project At Goodwood [VIDEO]

Toyota-GT-86-TRD-Griffon-Project-THUMBToyota has just returned to Goodwood Festival of Speed with it’s the pure-bred racing model – the GT 86 TRD Griffon Project. The car was revealed exactly a month ago, now its making its public debut, and next – it will be unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, making a Japanese premiere.

TRD Griffon Project is a development of the GT86 which has a design orientated specifically for track driving. The modifications made are reduction of car’s weight, strengthening of the chassis and introduction of racing-specification TRD accessories.

The body shape is kept as the original GT 86, however the Griffon Project features bonnet, roof, doors, boot lid and rear wings made from lightweight carbon fibre. Additional weight is saved trough the utilization of carbon fibre reinforced plastic for the bumpers, wider front wings and rear diffuser. Instead of glass, the engineers and designers of the project have used polycarbonate material for the windows.

Inside the vehicle, one can see a TRD driver’s bucket seat, gear shift knob, ignition button and oil pressure and water temperature gauges. There are also included Momo steering wheel and Takata seatbelts.

Furthermore, there have been made many enhancements on the components of the car. For example, the standard Torsen limited-slip differential has been substituted by TRD mechanical LSD. In addition suspension has been significantly reinforced via a coil over suspension kit. The final gear ratio has been shortened to 4.8:1.

Other performance-related changes feature an oil cooler for the engine and a TRD mono block brake calliper kit with racing spec brake pads. Toyota GT 86 TRD Griffon Project sits on TWS 18-inch wheels matched with Yokohama Advan tyres.

  • Toyota lineup at Geneva – Hybrids and Fun

Toyota-2012-Geneva-thumbThe 2012 Geneva Motor Show is as close as ever and to build up the hype, manufacturers are revealing and teasing what to expect during those few days of motoring nirvana (from 8 to 18 March). Toyota has offered a quick summary of what their booth will look like with some clever machines and European firsts – four concepts, a production hybrid and a grand tourer – the Toyota GT 86. It is an almost identical car to the Subaru BRZ which also will be making its own premiere in Europe. It would be interesting to see which one gets more favor. News news from one of the world’s largest vehicle conventions – the Geneva Motor Show which starts early in March and will last for more than 10 days.

To start off we have a nice little Yaris Hybrid which will be a completely new addition to the European public. Here we go:

    Yaris Hybrid

    Toyota Yaris Hybrid (2013)

The Yaris Hybrid will make an appearance as a production car ahead of its production schedule. Sales in Europe are expected to start in June and at that time the Yaris would be the first full hybrid supermini in Europe. That means that Toyota are aiming to create a whole new customer group that might be interested in absolute efficiency in small, practical and nimble packages.

    Toyota GT 86

    Toyota GT 86 (2012)
    Toyota GT 86 (2012)

The critically acclaimed Toyota GT 86 sports coupe will be ready for sale this summer. With its RWD, flat-engined layout, this grand tourer is sure to induce much excitement, adrenaline and smiles upon its arrival. And it’s pretty cheap too.

    Toyota FT-Bh

    Toyota FT-Bh Concept
    Toyota FT-Bh Concept sketch

The FT-Bh will be a concept of an ultralight full hybrid city car designed to be efficient in every way. Toyota has gone for the inexpensive way of making it by using commonplace methods of production instead of some grand new materials that are costly to research and develop.

    NS4 and FCV-R concepts

    Toyota NS4 Concept
    Toyota NS4 Concept
    Toyota FCV-R Concept
    Toyota FCV-R Concept

Those two concepts will be also shown for the first time in Europe. The NS4 is a value-perfect, plug-in hybrid focused on driving experience without compromises. The FCV-R concept will be the big one though. It will pave the way for Toyota towards mass production hydrogen cell powered vehicles. A saloon-type car might be on the way for 2015.

    Toyota diji

    Toyota diji Concept
    Toyota diji Concept

The diji concept is a weird looking thing. Imagine those digital frames on which you can upload photos from your computer and then it does slide shows for you. That’s what the diji is – an inside and outside environment made up of a screen. It can change it’s color and can be virtually infinitely personalized with all kinds of interfaces and applications. An interactive future of motoring or a visionary and ambitious idea?

  • Subaru BRZ, Impreza 5-door First Time in Europe

Subaru-BRZ-thumbWith the 82nd Geneva Motor Show approaching, more and more information is let loose to the world about premiers and lineups and surprises. Today, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (Subaru makers) confirmed that they will debut (for Europe) “Subaru BRZ” and the “Impreza 5-door”.

The fourth incarnation of the Impreza is designed to be a symbol of reliability, handling and safety. As always it comes with Subaru’s symmetrical AWD and a flat engine. In Europe that engine would be a very green 1.6 petrol that is said prsereve the sporty legacy of the brand. On a side note, the company’s own symmetrical AWD system, which first appeared on the “Subaru Leone Estate Van” in 1972, is turning 40 years this year. So at the Geneva Subaru booth, tech enthusiasts will have the opportunity to visit a gallery illustrating the history of Subaru’s AWD and tryout a 3D virtual thematic game.

    Subaru Impreza (2012)
    Subaru Impreza (2012)

The Subaru BRZ, which is almost identical to the Toyota GT 86 but is at the same time somehow better, will also make a European Premiere. This car will be the AWD exception as it is a front engined, RWD composition that throws us back in the days when tail-happy cars were appreciated. That said, it won’t be an uncontrollable lunatic car this, but rather a finely balanced GT car with a low center of gravity. That’s the beauty of a flat engine – it offers flexibility and compactness so the Subaru engineers have put it as low as possible and lo and behold, we have a performance fun house.

Press day for the Geneva Motor Show is set for the sixth and seventh of March and on the eight, the public can join in. The Subaru press conference is scheduled at 11:45am on March 6th

  • 2012 Toyota GT 86 at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show

Finally, Toyota will officially reveal the new GT 86 sports car at the 42nd the Tokyo motor show on November 30. The compact 2+2 model, one of the most keenly awaited new cars of the coming year, will go on sale in the UK in June 2012.

The new GT 86 is an entirely driver-focused, which is designed to deliver maximum pleasure behind the steering wheel. The sports car has instant response to the smallest throttle and steering inputs and the kind of performance that appeals to those for whom driving is a passion, not a necessity.

The GT 86 measures 4 240 mm long, 1 285 mm high and 1775 mm wide,  with a wheelbase of 2 570mm, dimensions which make it the most compact four-seater sports car available today.

The car is built on a new platform featuring a highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the car’s mechanical elements. Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to achieve the best balance: the car has a near-perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution.

    2012 Toyota GT 86
    2012 Toyota GT 86

2012 Toyota GT 86 is powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder boxer engine with equal bore and stroke of 86.0mm. It generates 200PS (147 kW) at 7000RPM and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque at 6600RPM. The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. The automatic transmission can be controlled using paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel.

The power is put on the road through rear wheels via a LSD (limited slip differential) to give the best possible grip in all driving conditions. The ABS and switchable vehicle stability control systems have been tuned specifically to deliver dynamic stability at the limit of the car’s performance envelope with minimal electronic intervention to help preserve the purity of the driving experience.

The suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear. The car rides on 17” wheels and is fitted with ventilated disc brakes fore and aft.

With its staggering look, rear-wheel-drive and the nice naturally aspirated petrol engine, the new GT 86 will turn in one of the best sport coupes on the market.
