  • Manga-inspired Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept pays tribute to the mid-80s AE86 Corolla

Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept front and side view

Car from Initial D manga comics is the inspiration for the GT86 concept

If you are into manga, then you have probably heard of the Initial D: cult Japanese comics, where the young hero, Takumi Fujiwara, drove a modified AE86. He honed his driving skills on mountain roads as delivery driver for his father’s tofu shop. As you can expect, the car immediately became a star, influencing the emerging drifting scene and inspiring a live action movie and various arcade games.

What’s even more exciting is that Toyota’s new GT86 project is inspired and based on the world-famous mid-80s AE86 Corolla featured in the series. Well, here’s a hint, since the GT86 was introduced in 2012, it was instantly recognized as the successor to the rear-wheel drive Corolla GT Coupe.

Now, Toyota is re-emphasizing this link with one-off project called GT86 Initial D concept. Besides the spirit, the car also mimics the livery of the Corolla featured in the comic book. Highlighting the pop-culture roots, the brand has made the fantastic decision to commission manga artist Sonia Leong to design a series of panoramic backdrops that put the real GT86 into comic strip action scenes.

Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept interior

The GT86 Initial D concept’s livery copies manga car’s panda-style monochrome outfit. In addition, it utilizes new versions of the same Japanese market components that were once on the successful original. Precisely, here are featured custom-made RS Watanabe alloy wheels, TRD suspension, a Fujitsubo exhaust system, Cusco strut brace, and a carbon fibre bonnet.

The yellow-tinted fog lights that were a trend back in the 80s haven’t been forgotten. They hint at the Cibié spotlights and the silver-painted engine cover. The latter features underneath high-revving 20-valve ‘Silver Top’ 4A-GE unit.

Modernized a little bit, the car sports carbon fibre door handle protectors and mirror covers. They give a similar effect to the black plastic material used on the AE86. Just like the Initial D car, this one features mud flaps and tinted rear lenses and no boot lid spoiler. Check out the details below for further inspiration.

All in all, this Toyota GT86 Initial D Concept acknowledges how important the AE86 was. Unfortunately, it won’t reach production, but still it will be attending motoring events around Britain throughout the summer. So, if you are lucky (and have the passport) you might end up having a glimpse on it.

  • Corolla celebrates its 50th anniversary with a rather special race! How cool is that?

1970 Toyota Corolla at the Great RaceRace events become more and more interesting. And here comes one more interesting event: the Great Race. This is a long-distance endurance competition for vintage vehicles. It will start in Northern California and end in Moline. And there is one more interesting thing: Toyota’s participation is part of the Corolla’s 50th anniversary celebration! Needless to say, the racing team will be using a Corolla model. A rather special one.

This iconic first-generation 1970 Corolla sedan will join more than 130 vintage cars in the battle of the classics. The driver is Jamie Bestwick, a 13-time X Games gold medal winner in BMX Vert and a SCORE Baja 1000 veteran. And in order to pay tribute to the 1970’s, the whole team will be geared with special uniforms, while the car itself will remain true to its original specifications: what we see here is a trial by Toyota to show some oldschool quality and durability.

1970 Toyota Corolla at the Great Race

The event itself, the Great Race, features classic vehicles dating back to 1916 and starts in San Rafael, California and is expected to end in Moline on Sunday, June 26. The racers will follow the historic Lincoln Highway through Nevada, Udah, Wyoming, South Dakota and Iowa. And what about the winner? Well, the most “endurable” team will get a sweet trophy and a check for $50,000 USD.

Of course, each team will receive a set of course instructions that will lead them through key checkpoints. Also, racers will be joined by numerous guest navigators along the race, including the off-road racing champion BJ Baldwin, world-class snowboarders Amy Purdy, Elena Hight and Louie Vito, BMX rider Drew Bezanson, musician Mike Eldred, motorcross racer Andy Bell and many more. Sounds good, right?

So, let’s wish them luck, and sit back and watch the spectacle!

  • 2016 Corolla Hybrid is here. Along with its long nose.

2016 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Usually Toyota combines this well-known appearance with brand’s dominant hybrid technology and launches a specific model. This time the new chosen one is the Corolla that is expected to offer better fuel economy, sharper handling and overall acceptable quality:price ratio. So, let’s see what did Toyota do good and what did Toyota not do good.

We should mention that Toyota tries its best to deliver high-quality drivetrain systems and with its range of hybrid units, the brand really caught our eye. Definitely the efficient Prius was a big achievement for the Japanese manufacturer, but we all wonder if the same formula could be applied to other models and systems.

The new Corolla Hybrid comes with driver-focused goodies that will be exclusive for the model, starting with handling and stability technologies, going through interior comfort and functionality and finishing with refined drivetrain system and suspension. In fact, this is the only Corolla to be fitted with electronically controlled brakes, larger front discs, three selectable driving modes and special hybrid display. Sweet.

    2016 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

We are not sure if the Corolla Hybrid should be offered in just one specific grade, but as we dig more and more vehicle’s features, we tend to accept the absence of trim levels and personalization. However, the car is fitted with dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, auto-leveling bi-LED headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and keyless smart entry systems. Toyota team did not miss to include its own Toyota Link infotainment system and a 4.2-inch multi-task display.

Available in one specific grade, Corolla Hybrid also offers some premium features as dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, auto-leveling bi-LED headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and keyless smart entry and ignition. Of course, let’s not forget about the satellite navigation, SUNA live traffic updates, Toyota Link, the colorful 4.2-inch multi-task display. Overall, does not sound that bad for a single grade, does it? But what about the performance rates?

    Drivetrain system

The rates are pretty much casual and mid-end adequate. Corolla Hybrid is geared with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder Euro 5-compliant unit. It is relatively efficient and not that “superior economical” as brand itself wants it to be. Technically it’s consumption rates are measured at 4.1/100km and the maximum driving range is about 1,970 kilometers. Good thing is /and pretty much expected/ that driver can choose whether the vehicle would work with only petrol or only electric energy, or both combined. It is not something unseen, but it is a good thing that manufacturer gives some options. But the question remains: why not Euro 6-certified system?!

    Additional equipment

Also as standard features are coming seven airbags, reverse camera, stability and traction control system, anti skid brakes, not-that-ugly 16-inch alloys, black fabric upholstery and a choice of eight exterior color finishes. One of the few personalization options, by the way.

    2016 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

And of course, for some additional not-that-small amount of cash, buyers can equip the vehicle with SUNA live traffic updates, expanded Toyota Link and additional mobility services.
Despite some disappointing features as plastic-looking exterior components and the boring interior, we kinda like this one. So, what do you think?

  • Toyota Corolla Hybrid is the Fifth Hybrid in Company’s Synergy Drive Range

Toyota Corolla 1.8-litre Hybrid Front ViewToyota has released a Corolla Hybrid for its Australian customers, but we are sure that this will happen very soon for the rest of the world, too. So lets teak a sneak preview of the direction Toyota is undertaking. The Corolla Hybrid Hatch will be introduced as well-specified single grade, just like its siblings that have Hybrid Synergy Drive. It will be actually the fifth model following in the range, following the Prius, Prius c, Prius v and Camry.

An abundance of features will be included in the car and examples do not end with the satellite navigation, Toyota Link connected mobility, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning or the bi-LED headlamps.

The details about the powertrain reveal that the Corolla Hybrid hatch will be fitted with a Euro 5 compliant 100 hp (73kW) 1.8-litre petrol engine linked with a 60kW electric motor. Driving the wheels will be the Multidrive S automatic transmission. By the way, the new hybrid car is expected to use around one-third less fuel and at the same time Prius-like fuel economy.

    Toyota Corolla 1.8-litre Hybrid Powertrain

The low oxides of nitrogen and virtually zero particulate matter emissions contribute for the environmental benefits of the car. Precisely, the car will also feature a selectable electric-vehicle mode, which will enable the Corolla hybrid hatch to be driven for up to two kilometres at speeds of up to around 45km/h with zero tailpipe emissions.

There is no surprise that Toyota is entering a Corolla Hybrid to the Australian market first, since the Corolla nameplate is the most successful in Toyota’s Australian range. It has more than 1.34 million sold to local customers! And here are the details:

  • 2015 Toyota Auris Looks Like a Shark!

Toyota shared that the Corolla hatch, also known as Auris in Europe, is going to premiere with refreshed exterior and interior looks. This will happen during the Geneva Motor Show next month.  There is an extra dose of prestige added to the outside, reworked cabin and a saturated feel of comfort as well as safety. As you can see, the front end of the 2015 Toyota Auris facelift is highlighted by a number of cosmetic changes. They can be viewed when we cast a closer look at the grille.

More sharply–looking headlights and revised bumper make an impression too. But what an impression … To be honest this new design makes the front fascia look like the mouth of a shark, doesn’t it?

The automaker hasn’t released any images that show the back of the car but we expect some minor tweaks there. Perhaps a slightly reworked rear bumper and new taillights? It doesn’t sound too bad at all especially when we take into consideration the sort of plain and not so attractive appearance of the hatch.

When we talk about the interior we can notice that the cabin still has this conservative and kind of modest design of the previous generation. Nevertheless, some glossy black elements have been added so that the dashboard can look less dull and boring. Different air vents are also presented. Still, with such minimal alterations I highly doubt that Auris will be viewed as a big competitor in the compact segment.

Oh, yes, Toyota also said that customers can benefit from better fuel efficiency thanks to the 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that has a total power output of 140 hp (103 kW). How do you think? Does this make a huge difference?

  • Toyota Introduces Next-Gen Integrated Safety Technology [VIDEO]

Toyota-Integrated-Safety-Technology-THUMBToyota’s next-generation Integrated Safety Technology was revealed today. It comprises of a lot of smart new technologies and systems which aim to deliver safety driving and are planned to be applied in company’s future vehicles. These include vehicle-to-infrastructure and communications for safer manoeuvres, hazard alerts and smarter as well as more efficient cruise control driving; and new adaptive LED headlight arrays for better night-time illumination. These technologies together with advanced active safety packages are scheduled to be officially rolled out from 2015 for new models.

All of these new features were just announced at a safety seminar in Toyota City. The company is also creating Safety Sense active safety packages, which are tailored to suit different size vehicles prepared to be introduced by the end of 2017.

Vehicle-infrastructure and vehicle-vehicle communications use wireless frequency reserved for Integrated Traffic System (ITS) services. The instance here is simple: when one arrives at junction with no clear view, sensors above the road detect on-coming traffic or pedestrians and send the information to the car (vehicle-to-infrastructure system).

In addition, those vehicles approaching the intersection will signal that they are there with the vehicle-to-vehicle link, thus activating visual and audio warnings. Communicating Radar Cruise Control is the next technology developed by Toyota that utilizes vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

This one makes it easier for preceding and following vehicles to keep a safe distance apart. How it works? It has forward-facing millimetre-wave radar which monitors the distance between the vehicle and this ahead, their approximate speed and the acceleration/deceleration of the car in front.

LED Array Adaptive High Beam comes offering better night-time illumination. The system utilizes multiple, independently controlled LEDs arranged in a single row. The effect: a wider illumination without dazzling drivers of on-coming or preceding vehicles. In addition, it can light up the gaps between cars ahead and those approaching. This next-gen technology will be featured in Toyota’s Safety Sense active safety package.

Starting from next year, the Japanese company will launch a new set of active safety technologies. They were designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions, and will be offered in two Toyota Safety Sense packages: C and P for mid-size and larger vehicles respectively.

More importantly, they will bring together several active safety technologies, including the Pre-Crash Safety system, Lane Keep Assist and automatic high beam. Precisely, the C package utilizes laser radar, while the P package a millimetre-wave radar, each of which is combined with a camera.

At last, there is a separate active safety package called Lexus Safety System+. It will include the new Road Sign Assist function, which recognizes speed limits and road signs when traveling overseas, presenting the information on the driver’s instrument display.

  • Exclusive: 2014 Toyota Corolla Finally Revealed

After it has been teased several times so far, 2014 Toyota Corolla has just been revealed in details! The fresh design will offer more style, quality and craftsmanship, while building on the inherent for Corolla reliability, efficiency and function.

In fact this is the new 11th generation of the model and it makes an immediate visual impression thanks to its more expressive, chiseled exterior design that elaborates on the “Iconic Dynamism” – a theme which we have seen on the Corolla Furia Concept.

The new Toyota has more athletic proportions and now rides on a longer wheelbase (+ 3.93 inches/ +100 mm compared to current model) thanks to a basic shape that tapers at the front and rear of the vehicle to help emphasize the wheel arches and wheels-to-the-corner stance.

The new Corolla features an expressive front fascia with sharper, more pronounced details above a large trapezoidal grill that rests beneath a thin intake inlet below the hood.

Basic Exterior Dimensions Compared to Current model (change in parenthesis)
    Overall length 182.6 in. (+3.90 in.) 183.1 for S-grade 4639 mm (+99), 4650mm for S-grade
    Overall width 69.9 in. (+0.63 in.) 1776 mm (+16)
    Overall height 57.3 in. (-0.39 in.) 1455 mm (-10)
    Wheelbase 106.3 in. (+ 3.93 in.) 2700 mm (+100)
    Front Overhang 37.7 in. (+0.90 in.) 958 mm (+23)
    Rear Overhang 38.6 in. (-0.94 in.) 981 mm (-24)

The front view of the new Corolla reveals a continuation of the design themes seen in recent Toyota sedans such as Camry and Avalon, and it creates a sleeker, more assertive impression of a Toyota compact sedan with its more precisely sculpted surfaces.

The sleeker image of the Corolla, the thick structure of conventional headlamps, the compact LED lamp assemblies which now come as a standard, are some of the new elements featured in the design.

When looked from the side, this Toyota’s athletic profile reveals door handles that have been sculpted into the body to align with a character line that spans the length the door surfaces, using a vertically asymmetrical door handle design. In addition, the new C-pillar features a “faster”, longer sloping angle. The rear is accentuated by large, sharply-sculpted rear taillight assemblies.

Basic Exterior Dimensions Compared to Current model (change in parenthesis)
    Overall length 182.6 in. (+3.90 in.) 183.1 for S-grade 4639 mm (+99), 4650mm for S-grade
    Overall width 69.9 in. (+0.63 in.) 1776 mm (+16)
    Overall height 57.3 in. (-0.39 in.) 1455 mm (-10)
    Wheelbase 106.3 in. (+ 3.93 in.) 2700 mm (+100)
    Front Overhang 37.7 in. (+0.90 in.) 958 mm (+23)
    Rear Overhang 38.6 in. (-0.94 in.) 981 mm (-24)

The “Iconic Dynamism” theme is continued as a design philosophy throughout the interior as well. It results in a stylish, highly functional, and inviting interior space made with craftsmanship sophisticated materials and attention to detail.  Moreover, the interior includes a piano-black gloss trim highlighted by metallic ornamentation and trim that conveys an upscale yet sportier image.

Blue, black or amber pinstriped accents are utilized in conjunction with the dash and door panel ornamentation. Ornamental stitching along the leading edge of the dash pad is also present. And the available decorative boot with ornamental stitching surrounding the shift lever contributes to a sportier and premium look.

The increase in exterior size, leads to the same in terms of the dimensions of the coupe inside. This results in better comfort for the passengers and a considerable legroom for the rear seat occupants. Additionally, the rear seat comfort is also improved by denser urethane pads and foam inserts within the seats.

The acoustic glass windscreen, improved floor carpet insulation, an instrument panel seal between the cowl and the windshield, a fender sound insulator, and an inner dash silencer pad all serve in terms of bringing about more quietness. In this way the environmental noise, the road and engine sounds entering the cabin are reduced.

The new models standard gauge cluster includes three dials with sharp image detail and clear blue illumination, surrounded by chrome trimmed rings. Within the speedometer dial is a multi-information display. It shows information such as the current fuel consumption, the average fuel consumption, the cruising distance and the average vehicle speed. In addition there is a S-grade meter cluster which offers a high technology feel with a 3.5-inch black and white TFT display.

As expected the new 2014 Toyota Corolla is going to be available in four distinct grades: L, LE, S, and the new LE Eco grade. Although all of them offer versatility, they have also some features as a standard. Such are the LED lowbeam headlamps with LED daytime running lights, an in-glass AM/FM antenna, color-keyed outside door handles, color-keyed outside mirrors, a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, power door locks with automatic locking feature, power windows with driver-side one-touch up/down, air conditioning with pollen filter, Bluetooth connectivity and eight airbags.

On the other hand in the range of optional features are present the Smart Key System on front doors and trunk with Push Button Start, auto air-conditioning with pollen filter, leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters and audio controls, Multi-Information Display, Bluetooth hands-free phone voice-command controls, SofTex™-trimmed heated front seats, and a range of audio capability that will offer navigation and Entune™ apps accessible through the head unit.

The fuel economy was priority in the development of the engines. 2014 Corolla LE Eco model for instance targets an estimated EPA highway fuel economy rating of over 40 mpg thanks to its 1.8-liter engine with Valvematic technology, low rolling resistance tires on 15-inch wheels and the efficient CVT. The model is also offered with an available 16-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels.

In addition, the airflow has been refined and now the turbulence over the front and rear edges of the car is reduced. The Corolla’s underbody features a smoother. In fact, both the LE Eco grade and S grade deliver strategically placed vehicle under covers located below the bumper fascia, engine, front floor, rear floor, and fuel tank. This helps managing the airflow under the vehicle for improved efficiency.

What is more, the new Toyota model is going to be offered with two efficient 1.8-liter, all-aluminum four-cylinder engines. The standard unit is the 1.8-liter with VVT-i and it is available on the L, LE, and S grades. It is rated at 132 horsepower (97 kW).

On the other hand the LE Eco trim level is equipped with a 1.8-liter engine with Valvematic. The latter is a valve train technology that offers a broader range of continuously variable valve timing (lift and phasing) in order to deliver optimal intake valve (not on exhaust side) operation relative to engine demands. The output of this engine is estimated at 140 horsepower (103 kW).

    2014 Corolla Engine Specifications

Furthermore, the fuel efficiency is further optimized by the advanced Continuously Variable Transmission. This CVTi-S is going to be available on the LE, S, and LE Eco models. As a matter of fact, with this transmission now the new Corolla has improved drivability.

All of the models that are to be equipped with the CVTi-S offer the capability of either an ECO or SPORT driving mode. The first one makes accelerator control become non-linear to suppress the vehicle’s response to choppy driving and contain acceleration from standing start to help reduce fuel consumption.

Next, the SPORT mode delivers a more dynamic driving experience with software tuning that alters shift points, creating transmission behavior during acceleration that enhances the sporty character of the S-grade.

All of the customers who are going to opt for the 2014 Corolla S equipped with CVTi-S are going to receive steering wheel mounted paddle shifters which are going to make fast, sequential, stepped shifts through “7-speeds” to help enhance the driving experience. The base model Corolla L on the other hand is going to be offered as a standard with a four-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission as an option. The latter is also optional on the Corolla S.

2014 Corolla offers also enhanced handling and steering thanks to a rigid unibody. The latter also benefits from an improved suspension tuning. • 2013 Toyota Corolla: A Cat’s Love Affair [VIDEO]

While I was browsing today in order to find some exciting news from the automotive world, I accidentally came across a video which was hilarious and at the same time very original. The main character here is a cute tom-cat, who has a love affair with the new 2013 Toyota Corolla.

However, this affair seems to be a bit wicked and the cat is that much attached to the Corolla that he wants to stay in it all the time. And in this case what a cat would do rather than some trick?

Yes, the little “guy” gets himself involved in series of accidents, so that he can get injured, and as a consequence his owner puts him in the Toyota and drives him to the animal hospital.

Being a true cat fan, I was a bit skeptic when I saw this video until I didn’t watch it to the very end. Although the cat did have only seven lives, it miraculously survives. And all you need to do is to watch the video to know how he does it.

All in all, a great new advertisement for Toyota and we are definitely eagerly looking forward to the release of the new Corolla which in turn is going to keep is excited in a great love affair with itself!
