  • Subaru reveals first technical specs of the new STI S209 lineup!

2019 Subaru STI S209Subaru of America, Inc. announced pricing on the limited-edition STI S209, the first-ever S-line STI machine produced exclusively for the US market. Limited to mere 209 units, the new family member will arrive at retailers later this year.

Designed with high-performance in mind, new S209 draws inspiration and tech ideas from STI’s most advanced machine: the WRX STI Nürburgring Challenge racecar, which won the SP3T class at the 2019 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The S209, just like its advanced sibling, features expanded wide-body exterior treatment, 265/35 Dunlop® SP Sport Maxx® GT 600A summer-only tires, wrapped around lightweight and exclusive 19×9-inch forged BBS alloys. Additionally, the vehicle is geared with 6-piston monoblock Brembo brakes on the front calipers and 2-piston monoblock at the rear.

Underneath the massive body of the S209 are exclusive Blistein dampers, stiffened coil springs, a 20-millimeter rear stabilizer bar and pillow-type bushings for the front and rear lateral links. Additionally, the S209 incorporates reinforcements to the front crossmeber and rear subframes and flexible front-strut tower bar and flexible front/rear draw stiffeners.

In terms of engine system, the vehicle is geared with the famous EJ25 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER power unit. It features an STI turbocharger by HKS and generates a total of 341hp and 330lb-ft of torque. Also, for the ultimate driver engagement, S209 comes with an exclusive and fine-tuned close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox that transits power to the full-time Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. There’s also a recalibrated SI-Drive system that offers three driving modes: Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp.

In order to feed more air to the mighty EJ25 engine unit, the drivetrain system also uses a high-flow intake system with a new intake duct, induction box with conical air filter and silicone turbo inlet duct. Also, as a homage to the 2004-07 WRX STI, the S209 is geared with an intercooler water spray system that lowers intercooler temperature by manually operated steering-wheel paddles.

  • Subaru Unveils Unexpectedly STI Performance Concept

Subaru STI Peroformance Concept From the BackTo be honest, Subaru’s STI Peroformance Concept is what I didn’t expect to see at the New York Auto Show. Next to the WRX STI Rallycross Car, this vehicle is a main star at company’s stand. The concept is a preview of STI’s (meaning Subaru Tecnica International) car performance characteristics. This also signifies for a bunch of tweaks hidden in this car.

For instance, Subaru said that it has changed the body, chassis and air intake and exhaust systems. Even the BRZ Super GT based engine was improved. In other words the STI Performance Concept is a pure example of the engineering prowess and tuning magic of the STI team.

Another thing that this car comes to tell us is that it is the first step of company’s plans to expand STI in America. As a matter of fact, STI-engineered parts have already replaced Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT) aftermarket parts in the U.S. There is also the promise to see other STI tuned vehicles in the U.S.

United States will obviously do what’s trendy in Japan, since the complete cars with the extensive tuning and performance parts are now on sale in Japan. Precisely, the modified models are the WRX STI, Forester and BRZ. To make this even more visible, Subaru has added “S model” nomenclature for the WRX STI and “tS” on BRZ and Forester.

Unfortunately, there are no additional details released, so everything is up to our imagination.

  • 2015 Subaru WRX STI – Isle of Man Record Attempt

Subaru has plans to to set a new lap record at the Isle of Man TT course with the 2015 WRX STI. It is set to be driven by British rally champion Mark Higgins. The previous record is 19 minutes and 56.7 seconds, so the task is very tough.

2015 Subaru WRX STI is powered by a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine – 305HP (227 kW) and 393Nm (290 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to a 6-speed manual transmission and a symmetrical all-wheel drive system

The model, which will make the attempt is going to be equipped with retuned springs and dampers to “minimize any potential damage when the car encounters the many bumps – and jumps – at high speed along the course”. Other improvements feature a roll-cage, a racing harness and a fire suppression system.

“Setting the record was totally exhilarating and one of the highlights of my career – Bray Hill certainly added to the thrill! As a Manxman, I love the TT Races and I have a huge amount of respect for the TT riders and what they do. It will be a real honor to attempt a new fastest car lap.”, commented Mark Higgins.

  • 2015 Subaru WRX STI Starts With Limited Launch Edition

Subaru-WRX-STI-Launch-Edition-shadowSubaru-WRX-STI-Launch-Edition-mediumAs promised, the 2015 Subaru WRX STI is now official at the Detroit Auto Show. In what can be described as a celebratory spirit, the Japanese company has decided to sell 1000 units of it in limited form called the Launch Edition. It’s more recognizable feature is the only available paint job called WR Blue Pearl. Gold-painted 18-inch BBS alloy wheels finish the legendary look.

In true STI nature, the power comes from a 2.5-liter flat six – the whole 315 hp package that is. This, along with an STI Short-Throw Shifter 6-speed manual, should bring a genuine sproting feel to the driving experience. It’s the whole package really. You get a rather stiff chassis, Active Torque Vectoring, Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive…gasps for air… Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), and SI-DRIVE powertrain control system. Don’t forget the Brembo disc brakes and the Super Sport ABS that overseers them. Wheel size: 245/40 R18 all around. Inside, you should be expecting Alcantara, a bit of leather, black on blue color prevalence and STI logos sewn here and there. The steering wheel is new and is as flat-bottomed as it can be.

The Launch Edition is pretty well equipped with luxuries that will appeal normal people as well (as opposed to gear heads who drink brake fluid for breakfast). Consider the Keyless entry system, LED low-beam headlights, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, heated wing mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, HD radio system with great USB connectivity, a 4.3-inch LCD screen with loads of information on it.

  • Subaru BRZ STi Concept

Subaru has unveiled the BRZ STI Concept at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. The sports vehicle come with RWD and it is co-developed with Toyota Motor Corporation.

The car is designed for “Pure Handling Delight” and features horizontally-opposed Boxer engine. The exterior boasts aggressive headlights, a carbon fiber roof and an enormous rear wing. The package also includes a front spoiler, a rear diffuser and a 4-tailpipe exhaust system.

The performance is further boosted by a special sport-tuned suspension and Brembo brake system. BRZ STI sits on 18” alloy wheels fitted with performance tires.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter Boxer engine with direct injection technology. It is designed with a square bore and stroke of 86 X 86 mm for high output and high environmental standards, which were both attained.

    Styling

    • By installing the Boxer engine as low as possible, the low hood and sleek roofline together compose a sophisticated form. This is also blended with STI performance touches for a Subaru sporting profile.
    • A hexagonal lower front grille, hawk eye headlights and fin-shaped fog lamps make the front face instantly recognizable as Subaru.
    • STI-made lower front spoiler and rear wing magnify down-force and aerodynamics performance. They allow stable straight driving and excellent handling at high speeds.
    • The rear design with bold rear fender flares, large rear-diffuser, and twin dual tailpipes intensifies the STI performance feel.
    • A carbon-fiber roof, already installed in a WRX STI model and highly acclaimed, has been employed by the concept car. With it, extra weight reduction and an even lower center of gravity were achieved, contributing considerably to the ultimate handling performance this concept model aims to offer.

    Engine

    • The Boxer engine has inherent qualities of light weight, compactness, low center of gravity, and high rigidity – all pointing toward its great potential as a sports car engine. Taking full advantage of these features, a 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder direct fuel-injection gasoline engine has been developed exclusively for BRZ.
    • The engine has been designed with a square bore and stroke of 86 X 86 mm. Combined with Toyota’s D-4S direct injection technology (fuel injection system), high output and high environmental standards were both attained, both expected of a new generation sports car.

    Chassis and Body

    • Compared with other Subaru models, the engine in SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT – STI – sits an impressive 120 mm lower and is positioned 240 mm closer to the center of the chassis. As a result, this car has achieved one of the lowest possible center of gravity in cars on the market today.
    • By incorporating lightweight parts such as a carbon-fiber roof, the overall weight has been reduced. Subaru has also succeeded in attaining a body structure that is both lightweight and highly rigid in a striking balance. The concept car is the embodiment of pure driving enjoyment only obtainable with a “Boxer sports car”.
    • Its unique handling performance has been remarkably refined by adopting STI’s lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels with performance tires and STI tuned suspension with excellent lateral stiffness.
    • Brembo brakes enhance braking performance.

  • Subaru Impreza WRX STI with a lap record at Isle of Man

Mark Higgins set a new lap record on the Isle of Man circuit with Subaru Impreza WRX STI. The former rally chmapion stopped the clock at 19 minutes an 56.7 seconds for 60.83 km (37.8 mile) road course. The average speed was 182 km/h (113 mph) and a top speed of 261 km/h (162 mph).

“Setting the record was both the most exhilarating and the most frightening thing I have ever done,” said Higgins

“The rules allow for a flying start, so I crossed the line at 125mph. I then went down through the Bray Hill junction – normally taken at around 20mph – at over 150mph. Once that tricky section was out of the way I settled into the lap and quickly got used to the balance and sheer pace of the car.”, he added.

“In the end the lap was simply fantastic, and the WRX STI behaved impeccably,” explained Higgins.

“That we managed to set such an impressive time at our first attempt is a great tribute to the Subaru, especially given that so few modifications have been made. The engine pulled incredibly strongly throughout and the cornering capability proved crucial on such a twisty, unforgiving course.”, he finished.

The new record is over 2 minutes faster, than the previous set 21 years ago by Tony Pond in a Rover 827 Vitesse.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI is powered by a 2.5 liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol with 300PS (225 kw) and 350Nm (258 lb-ft). However, the model which Higgins raced has an MSA-spec T45 integrated roll cage, TRS race harness and a Lifeline fire extinguisher system.
