  • What happened to the 1700HP LM2 Streamliner?

LM2 Streamliner Revealed in NYDo you remember when we announced that a 1700 horsepower hypercar will debut at the New York Auto Show? Well, it did, after the official press days though. The first thought that comes to mind is that the prototype wasn’t actually finished in time and this has caused the delay. There was even an official statement from Lyons Motor Car that the Streamliner will be available for public view during the consumer/public days of the event, because the “prototype wasn’t ready”.

What we have found today at the official Facebook page of the company is those two photos of poor quality that actually display the car. And I am definitely not impressed. Maybe a little surprise is there, since this actually looks like a plastic box with an odd shape that is put over very posh and expensive wheels. Could this car even sustain 1700 hp?!?! My guess is that it would fall apart.

What is more, there isn’t a reliable explanation why the prototype wasn’t revealed during the press days, thus missing the opportunity to be shown to the world. Or is Lyons Motor Car trying to hide some details about the Streamliner and actually avoiding questions? We would probably never know, since I sincerely doubt that this car would ever develop 1700 hp .. or even 700 hp.

If my guesses are wrong, then we’ll see how this DOHC V8 powered car develops the promised horses and covers the 0-100 km/h acceleration sprint in just 2.2 seconds. Still, I doubt that Bugatti should have any fears of having this more potent rival.

  • LM2 Streamliner Supercar with Premiere in New York

Lyons Motor Car LM2 Streamliner Side ViewLM2 Streamliner is the name of a very interesting project that the visitors of the New York Auto Show will be capable of seeing. It is a supercar project by an American company called Lyons Motor Car. We have to tell you immediately that this car will challenge our perception of horsepower because it can actually produce 1700 hp (1250 kW). These horses come from a DOHC V8 engine that has been 4 cam twin turbocharged and features twin intercoolers, and has been connected to AWD 7 speed sequential gearbox.

And if you wonder about the 0-60 mph acceleration time, it is as impressive as the output. The company guarantees 2.2 seconds coverage, or even better, and below 8 seconds quarter mile time.

For these numbers is also contributing the body of the Streamliner, since it is made of pure carbon fiber. The chassis is full length carbon and features billet stainless steel subframes. Even the Brembo brake rotors are made from the same lightweight material.

Other highlights that must be mentioned here are the Bosh ESP and ABS systems package, the titanium and billet aluminum suspension, the Sport Mode for lower ride height, and the stainless steel, inconel and titanium exhaust system. Full LEDs are also inevitable with their 1200 watt HID driving lamps.

Inside, one will find 16 inch touch screen control center computer that will offer access to the navigation and the premium infotainment system. There are no words on the pricing yet, but we expect that it will be revealed during the auto show.

The big question that is circulating in my mind is: Should Bugatti fear?

  • Mercedes-Benz Restores 540 K Streamliner

Mercedes-Benz-540-K-Streamliner-THUMBMercedes-Benz 540 K Streamliner was built in the first half of 1938 and was delivered in June that year to the tyre manufacturer Dunlop. The car was employed for the testing of high-performance tyres for particularly fast and heavy vehicles, and then was adopted into the collection of the Mercedes-Benz Museum during the 1950s. 73 years after its introduction – in 2011 the vehicle was submitted for a full restoration process. The work began in the beginning of the following year and took approximately two and a half years to be fully reconstructed.

540 K was featured a streamlined aluminium body, which was an absolute one-off. It was designed strictly in accordance with the understanding of aerodynamics at that. As you can see it has flowing lines, low silhouette and minimal surface interruptions.

Streamliner was driven by an engine with 5401 cc output that produced 115 horsepower (85 kW). With a supercharger the power reached 180 hp (132 kW). The car managed a top speed of 185 km/h and a drag coefficient of Cd = 0.36.

Thorough research in the archives the specialists at Mercedes-Benz found that the vehicle was painted in silver-bronze and featured grey interior appointments and walnut wood trim. An important basis for the restoration was provided by the photos, quotation drawings and a historical description of the surface of the outer shell.

Of course, the restoration and reconstruction process was conducted via contemporary craft skills, methods and materials. The original line drawing of 1938 was transposed in meticulous detail to a 3D surface model with the help of CAD design techniques.

Extreme precision in the preparation and implementation of every detail and each stage of the work was then implemented. Original components were preserved and re-used, still showing the marks of time.

An interesting fact is that rebuilding the body shell alone involved more than 4800 hours of work. Then the reconstruction of the underbody panelling involved the help of aerodynamic experts from Mercedes-Benz passenger car development. The engine and transmission were repaired and eventually tested. The result is stunning – don’t miss the pictures below!
