  • 2014 Skoda Octavia Scout Debuts At Geneva

2014-Skoda-Octavia-Scout-shadow2014-Skoda-Octavia-Scout-mediumThe Skoda Octavia Scout: essentially a Combi with a personality disorder (it, among others, thinks its a mountain goat). Now, there’s a new one due to appear at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March.

There is, undeniably, an off-roadish look about it. The typical-for-crossovers black bumpers, door sills and wheel arches are the first to catch your attention. Bring out a ruler, however, and you’ll also find that the ground clearance has been increased by 33 millimeters compared to the standard Octavia. The 17-inch alloy wheels are a given and inside you’ll find a 3-spoke multi-functional steering wheel with Scout-specific features.

It’s clear that the Scout wants to be taken seriously and for a good reason. It has an AWD system that incorporates VAG’s Haldex 5 coupling system, the traction has been increased by 25% to up to two tonnes, and the larger approach/departure angles mean that the Scout also has better climbing capabilities. There will be a choice of two diesel and one petrol engines. If we had to guess, we’d say the two diesel options are Volkswagen’s 1.6- and 2.0-liter blocks that develop 105 PS and 140 PS respectively. As for the petrol, our money goes on the 160 PS 1.8 TSI plant (not entirely sure about that one). Either way, all powertrains will be 20% more economical when compared to the Scout’s predecessor.

  • Skoda Octavia Hatch GreenLine: 88.3 mpg

    Skoda-Octavia-GreenLine-hatch-shadowSkoda-Octavia-GreenLine-hatch-medium

There is a new addition to the Skoda Octavia range. It’s the GreenLine hatch – an 88.3 mpg and 85 g/km (CO2) car that still manages to pull off 110 PS.

The main culprit behind these impressive figures is the 1.6 TDI CR diesel engine. It’s managed by a Start-Stop system which comes as standard on all third-generation Octavia cars anyway. The GreenLine however, comes also with a set of uniquely styled low-resistance wheels. 16-inch in diameter, these alloys go by the name of “Velorum”. The intended tire pressure for the GreenLine is a bit higher than usual in in order to reduce the friction surface area on the road.

Other technological highlights include regenerative braking and front fog lights as standard. Visual treats: GreenLine badges on the front grille and rear hatchback. The gearstick inside also reads GreenLine.

The Octavia GreenLine is now officially on sale in the UK and is priced at £20,150 or about $33,118

Manual gearbox and DSG dual clutch transmission are available as options for both engines, each with six gears.

Furthermore, 2014 Skoda Octavia vRS is fitted as a standard with sports suspension. The body of the vehicle also has been lowered by 12mm compared to the standard Octavia. In addition, the designers have developed vRS-design sports seats for all of the occupants of the car. They have also created a new sporty three-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather. The gear stick and handbrake are also made of leather, while the sill plates and the pedals are made of stainless steel.

In terms of safety and security, the 2014 Octavia vRS features the following technologies: Front Assistant with city emergency braking, Lane Assistant, Automatic Post Collision Braking System with automatic brake intervention, Crew Protect Assistant and the Driver Fatigue Sensor. What is more, other technologies included in the car care about the comfort of the occupants. Such are: Adaptive Cruise Assistant, Intelligent Light Assistant, Automatic Parking Assistant, Traveller Assistant’ package and KESSY Keyless-Entry-Start-and-Exit-System.

  • Skoda Green E Line Development

Skoda-Green-E-Line-thumbAt Skoda these days are busy developing their not yet ready for production “Green E Line” vehicles – a segment of electric cars based on the Octavia Estate. Right now, a fleet of ten E Lines is undergoing a phase where day to day conditions are recreated so see how the cars behave. The whole green thing is a part of Skoda’s plan to excel in the field of fuel efficiency. Other projects concerned with that often work to optimize the TDI and TSI drivetrains and also various transmissions.

The gathered data will be of extreme value for fine-tuning to get the most out of the cars. Issues that concern potential customers can also be addressed – being extremely silent in traffic might be a disadvantage for example.

The whole testing procedure comprises of three phases: the first and the second are ongoing now and deal with in-house (on the Prague airport to be more exact) trials and research of the car’s various systems. The third phase, set to begin in March this year, will put the fleet to the real test as the cars will go to different institutions other than Skoda Auto (government, educational institutions etc.) for further research and testing in real life conditions.

Skoda Green E Line (Octavia based)
Skoda Green E Line (Octavia based)

Because of being based on the Octavia Estate, the Green E Line is ideal for harboring electric car components such as batteries, motors and electronic controllers. Power output stands at 85 kW and generous figure of 270 Nm. (because of being electric, torque tends to be always high and instantly available throughout the whole rev range). A zero to sixty time is said to be around 12 seconds and top speed is as high as 135 kph. On a single charge it is estimated that the E Line will go for 150 km which is more than enough to satisfy various European communities.

  • Skoda MissionL Concept Targets Qatar Motor Show

SKODA-MissionL-concept-thumgLast year, Skoda have delivered 879,200 vehicles to budget oriented, sensible customers. That’s 15% more in comparison with 2010 sales. Today Skoda are planing to keep up that pace by expanding to the East. The Qatar Motor Show will see the Skoda MissionL concept for the first time outside European land.

Just for the record, when we say concept we do actually mean an almost-ready-production-car. The MissionL goes on sale in late 2012 and it is designed to fill in the gap between the Fabia and Octavia (a sort of a small family saloon segment). Skoda say that the design features on the MissionL act as a definitive of the company’s future approach on aesthetics. For starters, this concept is among the first proud wearers of the new Skoda badge. The  outside lines of the saloon are more simple yet sharper which gives an overall athletic feel. The grille is framed in chrome while consisting of vertical plate fins that attribute to the depth of the whole front end. Daytime running lights and blinkers are mere luminescent bands positioned at the edges of the main headlights as fog lights frame the lower grille. The party piece however, is the tinted yet transparent glass roof that spans over the whole cabin. The interior is a feast of sensibility, neatness and efficiency seasoned with a bit of luxury thanks to the bichrome wheel, control panel and seat covers.

    Skoda MissionL Concept (2012)
    Skoda MissionL Concept (2012)

Skoda has already started its offense on the market with the launch of the Citigo in the Czech Republic and the introduction of the Rapid in India and feedback seems positive. The company’s plan within the near 5 years is to get those annual sales up to 1,5 million. In addition to the MissionL, ŠKODA is displaying Fabia, Octavia, Yeti and Superb at the Qatar Motor Show, all models are available in the local market.
