  • Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake

Numerous updates make the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake from Mercedes-AMG even more desirable. The new exterior design is particularly striking on the CLA 35 4MATIC Coupé (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined 8.5-8.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 193-185 g/km) and CLA 35 4MATIC Shooting Brake (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined 8.7-8.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 197-189 g/km). Both entry-level models have been given an AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats, a reshaped front apron and a round badge with the AMG emblem that reinforces the brand affiliation. The revised design of the inside of the headlights with LED or MULTIBEAM LED technology and the LED taillights also characterise the two top models CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Coupé (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined 9.0-8.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 205-196 g/km) and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Shooting Brake (fuel consumption combined 9.2-8.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 209-201 g/km).

New alloy wheels for all models

There are three new light-alloy wheels for the 35 models: standard 10-spoke, 18-inch wheels in black with high-gloss turned surfaces and optional 19-inch wheels with a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with high-gloss turned surfaces or in matte black with a high-gloss turned rim flange. New wheels for the two 45 S versions include standard 19-inch wheels with a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with high-gloss turned surfaces or optional 19-inch wheels in a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with a high-gloss turned rim flange.

Fresh colours for the seat covers

In the interior, those interested will discover new upholstery covers for the standard sports seats or the optional AMG Performance seats. The combination of ARTICO man-made leather with MICROCUT microfibre can also be ordered in bahia brown. Sage grey/black is the new colour for ARTICO man-made leather. And red pepper/black is available for the first time for the leather seat covers. For the trim elements, open-pore lime wood in brown completes the optional selection.

The Mercedes-AMG CLA models offer the new AMG Performance steering wheel with double-spoke design and seamlessly integrated buttons as standard. The AMG steering wheel buttons impress with brilliant displays and intuitive operating logic. These allow for important driving functions and all drive programmes to be controlled without taking your hands off the steering wheel.

The new Mercedes-AMG CLA models also benefit from the latest MBUX generation: more performance and the AMG-specific screen design make the brand experience tangible.

    35 models technically upgraded

The 35 models are equipped with a 48-volt electrical system and a belt-driven starter-generator. The second-generation starter-generator acts as a mild hybrid, providing a temporary power boost of 10 kW (14 hp) as well as functions such as coasting and recuperation for greater efficiency. The 48-volt technology also increases comfort, as the transitions of the start-stop and coasting functions are almost imperceptible. The powerful and agile 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine produces 225 kW (306 hp), which is variably distributed to all four wheels via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The sporty performance (acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) is combined with a wide range of driving experiences – from very sporty to long-distance comfort. The new front radiator improves temperature management at the limit.

AMG Street Style Edition for the 45 models

A special limited edition is available for the CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Coupé and Shooting Brake: the AMG Street Style Edition. With its MANUFAKTUR mountain grey magno paintwork and side foiling with the AMG logo and AMG pattern in the chequered-flag design, it emphasises the sporty appearance. The same applies to the colour accents in fluorescent orange. The edition rolls on 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with a gloss-turned rim flange. Optionally, customers can order the Street Style Edition with 19-inch AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design, painted matte black and with a high-sheen turned rim flange. The red-painted brake callipers form an attractive contrast to both wheels. Other exterior elements include the AMG Aerodynamics package, the AMG Night package I and II and the AMG fuel-filler cap.

The interior of the AMG Street Style Edition also has a distinctive design: The AMG Performance seat in black MICROCUT microfibre is adorned with seams and highlights in bright orange. The “CLA 45 S” label, also in orange, carries the brand emblem over to the interior. The AMG Performance steering wheel in MICROCUT leather/microfibre and the AMG trim elements in aluminium (with the same pattern as the exterior foiling) add further accents to the interior. Attention to detail is also demonstrated by the instrument panel with contrasting orange stitching and the AMG door-sill trims with “MG” lettering, a black interchangeable cover and Edition-specific lighting in red. AMG floor mats with “Street Style Edition” lettering and orange stitching complete the high-quality interior design.

With an output of 310 kW (421 hp), the Coupé and Shooting Brake are powerfully motorised. The compact sports cars accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is limited to 270 km/h. In addition to the pure performance figures, the AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine impresses with its spontaneous response. The fully variable all-wheel drive with AMG TORQUE CONTROL makes a significant contribution to the dynamic driving experience. The rear-axle transmission contains two electronically controlled multi-plate clutches, each of which is connected to a driveshaft on the rear axle. This allows the drive power to be distributed variably not only between the front and rear axles, but also wheel-selectively between the left and right rear wheels.

  • Toyota Reveals GT86 Shooting Brake Concept

Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake Concept front viewToyota Australia has made a great debut during the weekend, which has slipped somehow through our fingers. We are talking about the global debut of the new Shooting Brake concept version based on the GT86 coupe. Well, it is only in a prototype form, but still has fantastic design.

Although it was conceived and developed in Australia, the car has been hand built in Japan under the direction of Toyota’s global sports car division. Basically, the car adds a new hatchback styling to the rear of the GT86. In addition, concept’s name “Shooting brake” signifies how the design gives the GT86 more rear head room and luggage space.

It seems that Toyota’s design team has decided to expand the appeal of the car, but at the same time has kept the sleek and sporty couple styling of the GT86. Officials say that the model will be suitable for both weekends and track, so this might look like a perfect opportunity for many.

Toyota GT86 Shooting Brake Concept rear view

There are not many details disclosed so far. What we know is the following. The GT86 has a great weight and direct steering, which ensures that the car retains coupe’s involving driving experience. However, it has slightly more neutral feel in tight corners.

The designers also aimed at keeping the as much of the original GT86 as possible. They have only changed what was absolutely necessary to make the car more… practical. Well, the silhouette is still sporty, taut and energetic. By the way, the roof can be used to carry surfboards, bikes or storage pods for a weekend away while the larger opening of the new boot enables much easier loading.

Toyota isn’t planning to produce this vehicle in reality. It is only an internal design study. Nevertheless, Toyota would “never say never” if the demand is really big.

  • Audi Shooting Brake Allroad Concept Debut at NAIAS

Audi-allroad-shooting-brake-show-car-shadowAudi-allroad-shooting-brake-show-car-mediumThe mysterious Audi NAIAS Show concept has been revealed. It’s a compact crossover allroad shooting brake thing that is, apparently, very “functional for recreational sports” and a “concrete look into the near future”. Now, where have we heard that before?

It also has something called “sex appeal” according to Prof. Dr Ulrich Hackenberg who is a Member of the Board of AUDI AG. Technical Development. Must be related to those short overhangs, or the double LED rings within the front lights playing the part of quattro legacy in the flesh, or the succulent aluminum underbody at the raar. Erhm, let’s not get too carried away here. The body is a blend of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and aluminum. The wheels too (255/40 tires, 19-inch) are CFRP. All that space technology has brought down the weight to just 1600 kg-ish.

Sure it’s compact – measuring at 4.20 meters from end to end, 1.85 meters long and 1.41 meters wide – the Ice Blue Audi NAIAS concept contains a complex hybrid drive system. It has an already powerful 2.0-liter TFSI engine that boasts 292 hp and 380 Nm of torque, it has a disk-shaped electric motor supplementing the said TFSI with 40 Kw of power and 270 Nm of torque, and a second electric motor which works independently on the rear axle. The total output amounts to 400 hp and 650 Nm of torque. That’s 4.6 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and a top speed of 155 mph. All the while, you get back 123 mpg and 45 g/km of CO2 emissions based on the ECE standard if you don’t put your foot down.

The e-S tronic dual clutch transmission sends the combined power output of the TFSI and the disc-shaped motor to the front wheels only. The third electric motor at the back runs only when the allroad is in EV mode (purely electric), in Sport mode, or when the on-board systems decides that AWD is needed. Consequently, Audi have called the system “e-tron quattro”. There’s also a Hybrid mode which regulates all three sources accordingly in order to achieve the best milage. If needed, the disk-shaped motor can act as a generator, charging the 8.8 kWh battery pack, which stands right in front of the rear axle.

All that clever stuff, is an extension of the interior really. You’ve got Audi’s MMI terminal with its 12.3-inch screen, a comprehensive instrument panel which displays with varying (depending on the mode of driving) priorities the speedometer, the powermeter, the navigation map, and the tachometer. The interior is also a nice place to be in in general. So they tell us.

  • Bertone Aston Martin Rapide Shooting Brake

Bertone has revealed the Aston Martin Rapide Shooting Brake, which is scheduled to debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March.

The Concept is completely different compared to normal Rapide. The C-pillars bent forwards and connect to the muscular and tall wheel arches. This gives the perception of movement even when the car is still. There is also a full length LED strip at the back and the sharply tilted tailgate.

The interior is in 2+2 seating arrangement with individual seats for every passenger. The new body style gives plenty of room for the rear passenger. The rear seats can be folded flat to increase the luggage space. There are aluminum, wood and two-tone leather trims.

No words about performance, but probably the Rapide Shooting Brake will have the same engine as Rapide S – a 6.0 liter V12 with 558HP (410 kW) at 6,750RPM and 620Nm (458 lb-ft) of torque at 5,000RPM. 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited.

  • Brabus 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

The new Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake has arrived! And like the first CLS that created a market for four-door coupes, the new five-door model redefines the sporty-elegant wagon. The exclusive final touch in the form of a sophisticated refinement program is now available from BRABUS.

The extensive product lineup starts with sporty-elegant aerodynamic-enhancement components for all Shooting Brake models with or without AMG sport package, and features custom-tailored BRABUS wheels with diameters of up to 20″. Also part of the BRABUS portfolio are exclusive interior options and engine tuning that delivers up to 619HP (455 kW) of power, 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque and a top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph).

Sporty-elegant styling paired with aerodynamic efficiency is the trademark of all BRABUS body kits. As always, the body components for the new CLS Shooting Brake were developed in the wind tunnel. They are manufactured from flexible Pur-R-Rim high-grade plastics or from carbon fibers depending on the version.

The CLS 250 and 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY diesel models and the CLS 350 and 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with production aerodynamics outfit can be upgraded with the BRABUS front spoiler, the BRABUS front fascia attachments with integrated LED daytime running lights, the sport fenders and the BRABUS side skirts with integrated entrance lights.

For vehicles equipped with AMG sport package BRABUS offers a striking BRABUS front spoiler lip that attaches to the underside of the front fascia. The CLS 63 AMG can be refined with an additional front spoiler and fender attachments with backlit BRABUS logo. Their clear-coated carbon-fiber construction lends the sport wagon full-blooded racing looks.

BRABUS Monoblock wheels in sizes ranging from 8.5J x 17″ to 10.5J x 20″ also play a major role in the exclusive BRABUS looks of the new CLS Shooting Brake. The OEM-quality alloy wheels are available in six different designs. The most exclusive version on offer features BRABUS Monoblock F, Q or R designs with a diameter of 20 inches. The latest addition to the wheel family is the BRABUS Monoblock R wheel with especially innovative design. Two sets of five double spokes are arranged in two plains. While the inner set of spokes is painted a “Liquid Titanium” shade, the outer spokes are diamond-polished and afterwards sealed with a smoke-colored clear lacquer, lending the wheel its very own character. The largest tires supplied by BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA for the 20-inch version come in size 255/30 ZR 20 in front and in size 295/25 ZR 20 for the rear axle.

The BRABUS suspension options are specifically calibrated to the use of sporty low-profile tires. They were developed in tandem with technology partner BILSTEIN. The lineup ranges from BRABUS sport springs to complete suspensions and the BRABUS suspension module that lowers the ride height of cars equipped with the semi-active AIRMATIC air suspension system by about 35 millimeters.

BRABUS offers the world’s largest program of performance tuning for Mercedes-Benz automobiles. The ECO PowerXtra D4 performance kit bumps the power output of the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY by 31HP (23 kW) and boosts peak torque to 560 Nm (446 lb-ft).

For the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY there is BRABUS ECO PowerXtra D6S tuning. Thanks to its plug-and-play design the auxiliary control unit can be installed by any authorized Mercedes-Benz workshop and any BRABUS center of competence in less than 45 minutes.

As a special feature this high-tech performance tuning system allows the driver to influence the power yield through the selection of the transmission program of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic gearbox. In Eco mode only peak torque is increased, from standard 620 Nm to 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. This selection leaves the maximum power output unchanged. If sport mode is activated or gears are shifted manually, the increase in peak torque is accompanied by a boost in power output from 265HP (195 kW) to 313HP (230 kW) at a low 3,600 rpm. 0-100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h (155 mph).

It goes without saying that BRABUS performance tuning is also available for the gasoline-powered versions of the CLS Shooting Brake. The BRABUS B50 – 500 performance tuning was developed for the V8 Biturbo engine of the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY. As the name indicates, this tuning kit produces  500HP (368 kW) and a peak torque of 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) and in conjunction with the BRABUS Vmax unit gives the wagon a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph).

Two ultra-powerful tuning options are available for the top-of-the-line CLS 63 AMG model. Both BRABUS power upgrades for the 5.5-liter eight-cylinder Biturbo engine comprise an auxiliary control unit for the engine electronics and an additional water-to-air intercooler powered by an auxiliary electric pump. In both cases the lower temperature of the charge air benefits not only power yield but also engine longevity even under extreme operating conditions. After the installation of the BRABUS B63 – 620 version the driver commands 619HP (455 kW) of power at a low 5,500 rpms. Simultaneously peak torque grows from 900 to 1.000 Nm (663 to 737 lb-ft), on tap between 2,250 and 3,750 rpm. 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph) that the car attains in conjunction with the BRABUS V/max unit.

As an ideal complement to the engine tuning, BRABUS offers a sport exhaust system with butterfly valve for the CLS 63. At the push of a button on the steering wheel the driver can switch between a discrete and quiet “Coming Home” mode and “Sport,” which produces a decidedly sporty exhaust note. The stainless-steel exhaust system also adds some visual highlights with its two beautifully styled ceramic-coated dual tailpipes.

For all other CLS engines BRABUS offers fully stainless-steel quad sport exhaust systems. The precision-calibrated exhaust systems also optimize power yield and produce a sportier exhaust note.

A BRABUS clutch-type limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40% optimizes traction and handling in fast corners on all CLS versions.

All BRABUS engines are operated with MOTUL high-performance lubricants and like all BRABUS components are backed by the one-of-a-kind BRABUS limited tuning warranty of three years up to 100,000 kilometers / 62,000 miles (see BRABUS warranty conditions, updated November 2006).

Exclusive interior design that leaves nothing to be desired is yet another BRABUS specialty that comes to life in the company upholstery shop. The product lineup for the new Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake ranges from attractive accessories to custom-tailored interiors crafted from especially soft, breathable and highly durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara. Scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo, a speedometer with 340-km/h or 400-km/h dial (211 or 250 mph) and the tables for the rear compartment that attach to the back of the front seats add sporty highlights as do decidedly sporty aluminum components such as pedal pads, door-lock pins and shift paddles for the steering wheel. High-end clear-coated carbon-fiber inlays for dashboard and center console in any desired color are also part of the program as are wood inlays in any desired color and with any desired grain.

To top it all off, BRABUS offers a custom-tailored multimedia concept for the five-door CLS – including the integration of an Apple iPad if desired.
