  • 2012 Paris Motor Show: Rolls-Royce Art Deco range

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars proudly presents a selection of Ghost and Phantom family cars that celebrate the Art Deco era. The highly bespoke Phantom Series II Saloon, Phantom Series II Drophead Coupé and Ghost models were unveiled at the Paris Motor Show 2012, in homage to the 1925 Paris Exhibition or Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that gave the movement its name.

Phantom Saloon’s black and arctic white interior hints at the visual language of the movement while a suite of Art Deco-inspired interior detailing points to the creativity, skill and attention to detail employed by Rolls-Royce craftspeople.

Hand-fashioned stainless steel inlays in telephone drawer, door cappings and rear picnic table backs subtly evoke the decorative style of the period. An echo of the rich heritage of the marque also lies in the Art Deco-style geometric coachline pattern – a design conceived and used by Rolls-Royce on a show stand at Olympia in the early 20th century.

The elegant simplicity of Ghost is presented in two-tone, Jubilee Silver atop Cobalto Blue, whilst the interior features intricately designed and crafted marquetry in front and rear. A Phantom Series II Drophead Coupé furnished in resplendent mother of pearl onlays gracefully completes the show line-up.

“In Paris we have elegantly captured the essence of one of the great periods in 20th century design,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “These Art Deco-inspired motor cars stand as a testament to the breadth of the Rolls-Royce bespoke offering, reinforcing the marque’s position as the world’s leading manufacturer of luxury goods.”

An exclusive collection of Bespoke Phantom Series II Saloon and Ghost family cars, inspired by the Art Deco cars at Paris, will be made available to Rolls-Royce clients.

For Phantom Series II customers, exterior colours will be offered in Infinity Black, Arabian Blue, Powder Blue or Arctic White, and feature a bespoke, twin coach line with an Art Deco motif. An illuminated Spirit of Ecstasy, hinting at ornamental glassware of the day, completes the exterior detailing. Inside Phantom’s coach doors, touches like Art Deco headrest embroidery, bespoke inlays on piano black veneer and tread plates sporting Art Deco motif further reference the style of the period.

Ghost Art Deco collection cars are finished in either Infinity Black or Arctic White with dual bespoke coach line and illuminated Spirit of Ecstasy. Interior styling includes handcrafted Art Deco inlays, as well as Olympia-inspired motif on tread plates and headrest embroidery. A black and white interior scheme featuring a choice of four seat piping colours takes inspiration from the colour palette of the era.

“For over a century a Rolls-Royce motor car has taken inspiration from the prevailing style of its time whilst retaining the marque’s unique design aesthetic,” added Giles Taylor, Design Director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Art Deco was defined by theatre, glamour and a sense of excitement. Working to create contemporary interpretations of these classic themes has been enormously rewarding for everyone in my bespoke design team.”

Akin to the artisans of what is sometimes called high Art Deco, only the very finest materials are employed and painstakingly crafted in every model leaving the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. Exquisite cashmere and finest leather combine to create an interior ambience that cossets passenger and driver in hallmark Rolls-Royce luxury.

Specially sourced wood veneers, selected for richness and complexity of grain, are adorned with mother of pearl or silver inlays – the form and structure of the pieces reminiscent of the fine cabinet making so prevalent in the Art Deco period.

  • Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe Aviator Collection Makes World Debut

Rolls-Royce-Phantom-Coupe-Aviator-Collection-THUMBRolls-Royce has just announced the launch of limited edition series of only 35 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé Aviator Collection examples. The models were inspired by Charles Stewart Rolls and the legend of the Schneider Trophy-winning Supermarine S6B, which is powered by a Rolls-Royce R Type engine.

The collection was created in order to celebrate the spirit of human endeavor that drove a very British hero and subsequently led Rolls-Royce to simultaneous world speed records on land, air and in the water.

As a matter of fact, the first appearance of this model will be made today, just few hours ahead, at the Pebble Beach Quail gathering in the United States. The new luxury vehicle will showcase there the new Aviator Grey paint finish as well as a contrasting matt bonnet, window and grille surround.

The interior is as glorious as the exterior. It features an interplay of wood and metal, a Thommen, aviation-grade clock with blood orange needle tips embedded in the metal foil upper fascia, matt black dials for power reserve, speedometer and fuel gauges.

The lower fascia here is veneered in mahogany and features Sapele contrast. Polished stainless steel wraps the ‘onlays’ with bullet-shaped ends, which in terms of design match the floor mat fixings.

Another interesting highlight here is the leather-lined glove compartment which features an embossed Charles Rolls quote following his first flight with the Wright Brothers in 1908. It says the following: “The power of flight is as a fresh gift from the Creator, the greatest treasure yet given to man.” In addition, the centre console chrome plaque includes his sweeping signature.

Aviator Collection cars are also equipped with leather floor mats, which have also been designed to incorporate the Rolls-Royce of cup holders. Beautifully engineered in highly polished aluminium, they offer optimal functionality combined with a great sense of luxury.

  • 2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase with a Beijing World Debut

2012-Rolls-Royce-Phantom-Extended-Wheelbase-THUMB2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase made a global debut at Auto China. The vehicle completes the Phantom Series II family of the brand.

Phantom Series II is an evolution of the Rolls-Royce Phantom model which first appeared back in 2003. What is particularly specific about the extended wheelbase is that it features significant improvements in design, drive-train and technology.

Of course, it carries a striking new front-end design, which is completed with re-styled bumpers and rectangular light apertures. In addition, there are also included fully-LED headlamps as standard. They deliver characteristic whiter light, and encompass technologies that automatically change the shape and direction of light beams according to road orientation and in response to different driving conditions.

Furthermore, there are also featured driver assistance technologies such as a modern user interface with re-designed multi-media controller, controls a new satellite navigation system with functions that include 3D maps with landscape topography, guided tours and composite route planning.

All of the necessary information is displayed on 8.8 inch control centre display. There are also displayed the images provided from the front, rear and top-view camera systems, which in turn help in better manoeuvring.

    2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase

What is more 2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase includes a brand new eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear differential. They improve the driving dynamics and complement perfectly the V12 direct injection engine.

In fact, this results in improved fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions as well.

Another interesting remark here is that at least five layers of paint and clear lacquer coating are applied to each Phantom model. The number of the layers becomes seven if the car is two-tone.

Any chosen paint color can be specified by the customer. Furthermore, single or double coach-lines can also be added, where each five metre line takes three hours to apply (by hand) using only the finest squirrel and ox hair brushes.

Moreover, there are also wooden features can be seen in the interior. It depends on the specifications whether there how many pieces of wood are being utilized for the construction.

In particular, up to 43 wooden parts can be used. Each of which is constructed from up to 28 layers of wood. In order to improve the strength and to prevent splintering in an impact, these are interspersed with thin sheets of aluminium.

The leather in the interior is drum pigmented. This allows the leather to keep its soft and supple feel, giving a rich, uniform colour while maintaining the natural feel, softness and comfort.

  • MINI Inspired by Goodwood Behind a Glass Window

MINI-Goodwood-Harrods-thumbA tribute MINI Cooper to the Rolls Royce brand, the Goodwood one, is currently being on a display at Bumpton Road’s iconic Harrods store. It’s been out there since the 8th of April. Showcased behind the shop window, with a picturesque British scene as a background, this Diamond Black MINI might just turn out to be a profitable ad campaign. Display screens offer information, representatives will further guide you trough it upon request and a projector casts on the pavement the MINI logo and the reading “1 out of 1000”.

First revealed at last April’s Shanghai Motor Show, this MINI takes a Cooper S hatch and mashes it with a dollop of Rolls Royce-like indulgences. That means 184 hp of power from the 1.6-litre four-cylinder, Twin Scrolled petrol unit. Add direct petrol injection and variable valve control and things get very 21st Century.

What does bring you back to the 19th Century however, is the cosmetic appeal inside – the dashboard, center console, air vents, carpets, heated leather seats, roof lining, doors and interior cladding are all finished in the exclusive Rolls-Royce Cornsilk color. The dashboard and door handle surfaces are of Walnut Burr. The roof linings, sun visors and rear storage tray are all made of luxurious cashmere, with deep-pile lambs wool used to make the floor mats.

But then again, the standard equipment balances things out with the Bi-Xenon Adaptive Headlights and Park Distance Control, and climate control, the an onboard computer and navigation. There’s also a Radio Visual Boost audio system that comes with a Harman Kardon hi-fi speaker setup. To top it all off we have 17-inch light alloy multispoke wheels.

For all of that, one does need to pay a hefty price tag – £41,005 ($65,341). Mind you, that does include a comprehensive five-year servicing package.

  • Rolls Royce Ghost by A.Kahn Design

Kahn-Rolls-Royce-Ghost-thumbHere’s a Kahn Rolls Royce Ghost modified in ways you would least expect it to be. Yes, this particular one is all dressed up in a shadow line finish and riddled with subtle styling features that make a difference. But the most substantial change is underneath. And sadly, I’m not talking about the engine.

Let’s start from the top. The side indicators are now clear, the headlights have surrounds, the tail ones as well, the windows also…apparently and there’s some underfloor lighting. Four 9.5 x 22-inch Kahn Silver Mist Rolls Royce wheels complement the overall Kahn look. One still gets Rolls Royce’s original emblazoned center cap however. All and all, not ground braking work this, but enough to give the Ghost some character so that it fits the Kahn philosophy about not submitting to uniformity and striving for perfection.

The thing about this Rolls Royce is that it offers a great deal more security than the standard one. Although one can only guess by the appearance, all the glassware is bullet resistant. It’s an optional extra that comes with armor reinforced body shell underneath. We are not sure if that takes a toll on the Ghost’s 6.6L twin-turbocharged V12, 563 bhp engine and even if it does, a few extra kilos won’t maim it, right? In fact, at Kahn claim that the technology used in making all the bullet proof glasses results in an overall lighter construction. That’s a bold statement.

What goes inside the Ghost is up to the customer. For example, instead of reclining separate seats at the back, one can have a single sofa bench which greatly improves the interior atmosphere. When it comes to color – whatever fits best.

In addition the “Geneva Ghost” included an interior design scheme that perfectly reflects the two-tone theme. In details, seashell headlining and sumptuous black leather frame the black stained ash veneer into which steel pinstripes have been added. What makes the interior even more luxurious are the lambswool floor mats. The second upper two-tone Rolls-Royce Ghost, has striking colour scheme in Baynunah Brown, with Arizona Sun colour bathing the car’s bonnet, window surrounds, roof and luggage compartment. A gold-plated Spirit of Ecstasy and double coach-line in gold completes the design.

  • Vorsteiner Rolls-Royce Ghost [Teaser]

Vorsteiner-Rolls-Ghost-thumbVorsteiner have undertaken an ambitious project and have released a bit of a teaser. It will be the Rolls Royce Ghost that’s going under the knife. But , in true spirit of the ultra-executive, the company intends to keep it simple and clean. In fact nothing is to be replaced but rather clipped on.

The end goal for Vorsteinier is to add a great deal of functionality and a little bit of character. That’s why the Ghost here gets some additional downforce by a front spoiler with a replaceable splitter chin. Supposedly further back there will be side skirts blade attachments with integrated wing elements. (although they don’t seem to be present in this picture, but it is, after all, a teaser). Then at the back end, one would find that there is going to be a carbon fiber rear decklid spoiler and a diffuser at the bottom (not a replacement part but an add-on). All of the body kit components are made trough an Autoclave pre-preg carbon fiber technology that guarantees durability and strength.

It all looks and sound very subtle indeed. The one thing sticking out in the Vorsteiner Ghost however, will be the massive 24-inch 3-Piece forged aluminum wheels that barely leave room for tires under the arches. Plans are to release the program this Summer.
