  • Nissan JUKE Hybrid Rally Tribute: where hybrid meets adrenaline

    2022 Nissan JUKE Hybrid Rally Tribute

    Following the release of images last June to celebrate Nissan’s participation in the East African Rally 50 years earlier, the Nissan JUKE Hybrid Rally Tribute has come to life.

    The JUKE Hybrid Rally Tribute moved from design sketch to fully operational one-off vehicle following the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the release of the original concept images. Its unveiling previews the European introduction of the JUKE Hybrid this summer. The prototype has the production version’s hybrid powertrain at its heart.

    Speaking about the decision to bring the JUKE Hybrid Rally Tribute to life, Coralie Musy, Vice President, Brand and Customer Experience, Nissan’s AMIEO region, said: “The JUKE Hybrid Rally Tribute represents our optimism and daring mindset. We are currently preparing an exciting new chapter of JUKE history in advance of the introduction of the new JUKE Hybrid in the summer. It will offer the excitement and agility customers would expect of our iconic crossover, with both improved performance and efficiency. The JUKE Hybrid Rally Tribute takes its playful character to a new level.”

    Advanced hybrid powertrain

    The use of powertrain from the forthcoming JUKE Hybrid reflects both the additional performance it offers in the production version, as well as the improvements to its efficiency and emissions.

    The JUKE Hybrid powertrain consists of a new generation, state-of-the-art Nissan internal combustion engine specifically developed for working in a hybrid powertrain application. It produces 69kW (94hp) and 148Nm of torque.

    On the electric side, the main electric motor produces 36kW (49hp) and 205Nm of torque, while there is a 15kW contribution from a high voltage starter/generator, all of which is fed by a 1.2kWh water-cooled battery. The net result is a powertrain providing 25% more power than the current petrol engine option, with a fuel consumption reduction of approximately 40% in the urban cycle, and up to 20% combined. Smart automatic gearbox

    Also carried over from the production version of the JUKE Hybrid and key to the driving pleasure at its heart is an advanced low friction multi-modal gearbox that provides optimal use of the propulsive power, whether electric, petrol engine, or both.

    To reduce friction, this motorsport-inspired gearbox uses dog clutches instead of conventional synchroniser rings to shift the 4 “ICE” gears and 2 “EV” gears. Additionally, to reduce friction, this gearbox does not use a clutch. All vehicle starts are 100% electric, and the 2 EV motors are used in combination to synchronise the gears, delivering smooth, connected and responsive acceleration.

    The gearbox is controlled by an advanced algorithm, managing the shift points, battery regeneration, as well as the advanced series-parallel architecture. The powertrain can seamlessly navigate through different hybridisation combinations (series, parallel, series-parallel) according to acceleration and power requirements and without any driver input.

    Rally-inspired modifications

    Like the Gripz concept car that was presented at the 2015 Frankfurt motorshow, preceding the introduction of JUKE, it takes its design cues from the iconic 240Z that competed so successfully in the desert rally over half-a-century ago.

    The most obvious modification are the enlarged wheel arches to accommodate the tailor-made off-road tyres, while the additional lights mounted on the hood and roof echo those of 50 years ago.

    Similarly, the black hood and enlarged black wheels are a visual homage to the 1971 vehicle that competed in the East African Rally. The use of vintage sponsor logos and the number 11 also reflect aspects of the 240Z rally car, as do the additional of reinforced plates under the front and rear valances which offer protection to the vehicle’s underside. Reinforced and long-travel suspension has been fitted all-round, to give the Juke Hybrid Rally Tribute exceptional poise over the challenging terrain it will navigate. The tyres are 265/70 R16, giving phenomenal grip and traction in all conditions, in the most difficult conditions.

    Inside, the interior has been modified with the fitment of a tubular cage to stiffen the bodyshell and to offer protection in the case of an incident at speed in the challenging desert environment. The rear seats have been removed to provide space for spare wheels and four-point harnesses have been added to secure the driver and navigator safely in their racing seats.

    Other modifications to the interior include the fitment of a competition fire extinguisher, an intercom system with a pair of headphones to simplify communications between driver and navigator, the fitment of Alcantara trim on the steering wheel and a hydraulic handbrake with high-reach handle for quick and easy activation.

    “As part of our commitment to electrify our range, this year will see an unprecedented wave of new Nissan electrified powertrains and vehicles. As well as the new JUKE Hybrid, we will also introduce our boldly innovative e-POWER drivetrain on the Qashqai crossover. We’ve already started taking orders for our new flagship Ariya EV, while the Townstar Light Commercial EV will go on sale later this year. And in the second half of the year, the all-new X-Trail Crossover will also be introduced,” said Coralie Musy.

    As part of the Juke Hybrid Rally Tribute project and in line with exploring the excitement of rallying while being as eco-conscious as possible, the Juke Hybrid Rally Tribute’s powertrain uses liquids and biofuels provided by Shell, Nissan’s partner for the 1971 East African Rally.

    Nissan in the East African Safari Rally

    In 1971, the legendary 240Z that took the victory of the gruelling East African Safari Rally was driven by Edgar Herrmann with navigator Hans Schüller. Indeed, the rally was a resounding success for the brand, with the 240Zs coming home in second and seventh positions. Furthermore, the victory represented the brand’s second consecutive victory in the rally.

    The low-slung 240Z was powered by a 2.4 litre straight six cylinder engine, producing 210PS, with power sent to the rear wheels. The victorious car was restored to good order in 2013 and is part of Nissan’s heritage collection which is housed in Zama, close to Nissan global headquarters in the Kanagawa prefecture of Japan.

  • Rally central, The best rally driving spots in England

    If you are a motorsport fan, then it is likely that you have happened to stumble across the fantastic sport of rallying at some point. Rallying is one of the most affordable and enjoyable forms of motorsport there is in Britain – and who wouldn’t want to have a go at sliding a car around gravel, or between trees, at an incredibly high speed? Rallying is a completely different form of motorsport to traditional circuit racing, as in rallying you have to beat your competitor’s time, instead of overtaking them on the track. But, as is the case with circuit racing, the great thing is that there are a variety of must-see rally events in the UK, which are great fun for motorsport fans and their families. But there are also a variety of rally experience days, where you can experience the thrill of getting behind the wheel of a rally car for yourself.

    There are multiple rally events which take place in the UK and perhaps the best of them all is the MSA Pirelli International Rally. This rally, which is usually held in the spring, is held around Carlisle (which is actually the home of the biggest Pirelli tyre plant in the UK). All of the stages are however held in the spectacular Kielder Forest, which is Europe’s biggest man-made forest, resulting in a fantastic, ultra-fast rally on a mixture of terrains, which is always a true test of both car and driver skill. The Nicky Grist Stages rally, which is held in Wales in July, is perhaps the most demanding rally in Britain and drivers compete on a mixture of surfaces, including some incredible Welsh forest stages. Both rally events regularly provide highly-entertaining and close competition, although as both rallies have many country stages, don’t forget your camera or your umbrella!

    After you have had the experience of watching a rally car going flat-out through demanding countryside in an attempt to beat the stopwatch, you will of course be desperate to try it for yourself. So where can you do this in the UK? Various venues offer experience days and tuition and costs range from approximately £150 to £300 and typically last 90 minutes or more in duration. For example, the Silverstone Rally School, which is based at the famous Silverstone Formula One Circuit in Northamptonshire, offer an excellent track day experience. For those who are interested in competition in the future, the London Rally School, which operates from two venues in Oxfordshire, offer a range of rally driving experiences. These range from one-off, casual, rally experiences, to personal tuition, driver coaching and even the MSA Licence exam which rally drivers require for competition. For those who live north of the border, the famous Knockhill racing circuit in Fife also provide a range of rally experiences. Knockhill also give you the option to combine the rally experience with karting, or skid practice. So what are you waiting for? Get out on the gravel today!

  • 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross MCAS Has A New Champion

    Ken Block is the this year’s champion of Red Bull Global Rallycross MCAS. With a lots of emotions and thrilling twists, Block, who also won the Fort Lauderdale opener season race, held off the rest of the racers for the victory.

    In fact, this particular event is a special one, because it is the first to be held on an active military base. And furthermore, it is the largest course with its 0.99 miles in the history of Red Bull Rallycross. The track challenges with its deceptive turns and dynamics, while the seven-turn layout adds even more to the trill. This, along with the well-known formula: ten contestants and one winner. Race heaven.

    Today was crazy up and down, so I’m really lucky to be here on top. I’d like to say thanks to everyone who came out—it was great to see everybody and sign autographs last night, and it’s great interacting with the military.

    So what actually happened? All the audience witnessed how Sandell was confidently going for a clean victory, when an incident with Brian Deegan set a full restart. So, what happened next is already known. Block quickly grabbed the leading place and at the end he also grabbed and his fifth victory of his Supercar career.

    Additionally, Dreyer & Renbold Racing beginner Alex Keyes won the CRC Lites event which happens to be the first in his carrer over Oliver Eriksson and DriftFish Motorsport’s Tanner Whitten. In fact, Whitten is now leading a intense championship battle with only 14 points separating  the top four drivers.

  • Danger of the Desert

    As the unpredictable and often dangerous weather of the Dakar Rally once again reared its ugly head, it didn’t halt the fantastic progress of Team KTM’s bikes.

    The hazardous weather conditions struck stage eleven of Dakar 2013, causing the stage to end early for both the trucks and cars. This news dealt a bitter blow to Toyota duo Giniel De Villiers and Dirk Von Zitzewitz, as they had developed an impressive lead before the stage met an abrupt end.

    When asked about the subject, a frustrates De Villiers said;

    “The decision to take the times at CP1 does not go in our favour but that’s how it is so we’ll have to try again. Everything is feeling really good with the car, I’m happy with how I’m driving and Dirk is find us the right way to go. Today we had the chance to cut about 15 minutes off the gap between us and race leader Stephane (Peterhansel) and that would have increased the pressure on him.”

    The decision to halt the stage also had a negative effect on the overall leaderboard, with Team Kamaz also being affected.

    The trio of Eduard Nikolaev, Ayrat Mardeev and Andrey Karginov were making waves throughout and were setting a good time, that was until the stage was annulled.

    Nikolaev vented his frustration by saying;

    “I’m sad that another stage at this Dakar has been cancelled because I come to race. Also at this Dakar the stages are very short so to lose another stage makes the distance we race even smaller. It seems that every year the race gets shorter and shorter and that is not something we are pleased about.”

    The bike race didn’t suffer the same problems however, as Team KTM took advantage of stage eleven going ahead as planned, with the route between La Rioja and Fiambala giving debutant Kurt Caselli his second stage victory.

    “Today is another stage win for the team and that’s always good. Things are looking better for the team then they were in the first week of the race. The start of the race was a little dodgy for us but things are starting to smooth out and we’re all feeling better.”

    The victory wasn’t just a boost for Caselli, but it allowed team-mate and overall leader Cyril Depres the chance to increase his lead and the gap at the top of the leaderboard.

    Caselli’s victory made Depres extremely happy, who said;

    “The stage was going okay for me but then for the final 60km I got a boost because my new team-mate Kurt Caselli picked up the pace. He was pushing like he does in his Baja races and thanks to him I was able to try and catch his rhythm. It was really helpful for me to ride with him because he really picked things up. The rhythm we had was not really the right way to ride when you are leading a race but it felt good so I went for it.”

  • Mitsubishi Evo Falls into a Ditch, Get’s out [VIDEO]

    Mitsubishi-Evo-Save-thumbMitsubishi-Evo-Save-mediumLook up “close call” in the dictionary and you’ll see a link that leads to this video. Well, maybe not but the fact that this was one of those my-heart-jumped-a-beat moment, is indisputable.

    A Mitsubishi Evo storms into a corner that’s largely wet tarmac with mud all over. Then the unavoidable happens – A massive oversteer with no time for correction. What follows afterwards falls short of a miracle, an AWD magic trick. If we were in a ditch like that, at that angle and at that speed there would have been a lot of screaming and waving of hands. This young man however, (presumably) holds his composure and stomps on the gas pedal with perfect timing. That’s how we get to enjoy some two-wheel action and a tremendous save. Good engineering plus good control equals win.

  • Opel Ampera to Debut at Rally Monte Carlo

    opel_ampera_THUMBThe Car of the Year 2012 – Opel Ampera, will take part in one of the most exciting rallies this year – nmely Monte Carlo Alternative Energy Rally. This happens for the first time in Opel’s history. The brand is providing award-winning electric car model for the prestigious international Rally Monte Carlo. Exactly six examples of Opel Ampera will make their debut in the “Alternative Energy” rally. The racing will take place in Annecy-le-Vieux, Clermont-Ferrand and Lugano on March 22 and will finish three days later in the capital of Monaco -Monte Carlo. The premise to take part in the rally is the following: the competing vehicles must have a maximum of 115g/km CO2 emissions. Te goal set for the racing is for the vehicles to cover a certain distance, maintain a constant speed and use as little energy as possible.

    Opel Ampera Racing Car

    By taking participation, Opel is once again showing that it is a global leader in the field of e-mobility. In fact, the Opel Ampera is the first electric vehicle which can go anywhere anytime. What do I mean by that? Well, the vehicle has a 16 kWh lithium ion battery, which powers the 111kW/150 hp electric motor. The distance of between 40 and 80 kilometers can be easily covered in the purely battery-operated mode, depending on the style of driving and road conditions. Of course, you get conclusion that all driving will be completely free of emissions. Moreover, the wheels of the Ampera are always powered electrically. In extended-range mode, which activates whenever the battery has reached its minimum state of charge, the gasoline engine drives a generator that supplies the electric drive unit. Thus it is possible for the car to cover 500 km, thank to the range extender, which enables this operating radius. At last, being on the road, the Ampera’s Voltec electric propulsion system provides torque of 370 Nm (273 lb-ft). This allows acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9 seconds and a top speed of 161 km/h.
