  • Porsche 918 Spyder – Nurburgring Lap Record – 6 minutes and 57 seconds

2014 Porsche 918 Spyder managed to set a new record at Nurburgring for a vehicle with global road homologation. It managed to close a lap at the famous Germany circuit in less than minutes.

The 918 Spyder has achieved exactly 6 minutes and 57 seconds. What is more, the new Porsche blends maximum driving dynamics with minimal fuel consumption. The record, which was previously held for four years, was broken during the first attempt in the test drive programme on the morning of 4th September.

All three drivers – Former European Rally Champion Walter Rohrl, Porsche test driver Timo Kluck and Porsche factory race driver Marc Lieb – were quicker than the existing record with each lap, driving the two 918 Spyder models used. Each driver posted lap times of less than seven minutes on numerous occasions. Ultimately, it was Marc Lieb who posted the absolute best time of 6.57 minutes, driving at an average speed of over 179.5 km/h(111 mph), as measured by Wige Solutions.

Porsche 918 Spyder is powered by a 4.6 liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 608HP (447 kW) and 530Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque. There are also two electric motors with 156HP (115 kW) and 129HP (95 kW) at each axle (front and rear). The maximum combined output is 887HP (661 kW) and over 800Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).

  • Porsche 918 Spyder – 887 HP and 800 Nm

Porsche 918 Spyder combines pedigree motor racing technology with excellent everyday utility, and maximum performance with minimum consumption.

It is powered by a 4.6 liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 608HP (447 kW) and 530Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque. The 918 Spyder managed to lap the Nurburgring in just 7 minutes and 14 seconds.

The sports car has five available driving modes, which can be selected through the steering wheel. These are E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap.

In E-Power, the car is able to operate only on electricity, but still it is very fast 0-100 km/h in under 7 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). It can travel up to 30 km (18.6 miles) on electricity alone

In Hybrid mode, the electric motors and the combustion engine work alternately to maximize efficiency. The Hybrid mode is typically used for a fuel economy-oriented driving style.

In Sport Hybrid mode, the combustion engine operates continuously and provides the main propulsive force. In addition, the electric motors provide support in the form of electric boosting or when the operating point of the combustion engine can be optimised for greater efficiency.

Race Hybrid is similar to Sport Hybrid mode, but it allows the engine to recharge the battery, when the driver is not using the maximum output. Electric power is thus available even with several very fast laps.

The Hot Lap button in the middle of the map switch releases the final reserves of the 918 Spyder and can only be activated in “Race Hybrid” mode. Similar to a qualification mode, this pushes the traction battery to its maximum power output limits for a few fast laps. This mode uses all of the available energy in the battery.

If the battery is depleted, it can be recharged within 4 hours using a 230V outlet.

Other nice technology is a Porsche Active Aerodynamic system that has three modes to provide optimal downforce.

The Porsche 918 Spyder can be outfitted with a Weissach package, which adds a race car inspired exterior including visible carbon fiber on the roof, mirrors and windshield. The package also reflects to the interior – Alcantara upholstery, carbon fiber trim and six-point seatbelts. Last, but not least are the lightweight magnesium wheels fitted with ultra-performance tires.

Porsche has released a new promotional video of the 918 Spyder, which has lapped the Nordschleife in just 7 minutes and 14 seconds. This is the third video of this performance and obviously the manufacturer is very proud of this achievement of their hybrid sports car.

Talking about hybrid systems, the 918 Spyder is powered by a 4.6 liter V8 engine and two electric motors. The combined power is whopping 770HP (566 kW). This means 0-100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph).

The car was fitted with street-legal tires and had the optional Weissach Package which will be offered for the production model.

  • Porsche 918 Spyder concept debuts at Goodwood

Porsche 918 Spyder concept has just made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was introduced to the wide public back in the 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show, where it gathered praises and received overwhelming reaction from the sports car enthusiasts.

918 Spyder has unique hybrid technology, thanks to Porsche’s Intelligent Performance system. The latter is responsible for the estimated fuel consumption of the car of 3 liters per kilometer (or 94 mpg), equating to CO2 emissions of 70 g/km. The supercar is equipped with V8 petrol engine which generates more than 500 hp (368 kW). In addition this engine is assisted by two electric motors with a total of 160 kW (218hp).

The energy storage unit is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket, delivering a range in excess of 25km (16 miles) in the NEDC on purely electric power.

Thanks to the great power it has, this super sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a maximum of 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of more than 320 km/h (199 mph).

And what about the design of this concept? As you can see it carries the design DNA of the Carrera GT and Porsche 917 race car, as well as the RS Spyder. Despite all the similarities, the production version of the two-seater will include a manual roof system with removable roof panels which can be stowed in the front luggage compartment.

First prototypes of the 918 Spyder are currently undergoing their final specification definition. They will include groundbreaking solutions such as the full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque with unit carrier, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear axle steering and the upward-venting ‘top pipes’ exhaust system.

Production of the 918 Spyder will start in September 2013, and will be limited up to 918 units. The delivery of the first vehicles will begin in November 2013 and will be priced from 645 000 Euro.
