  • 2013 Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype Enters Production

2013-Porsche-918-Spyder-Prototype-THUMB2013 Porsche 918 Spyder is on the road is already planned for production which will start at the end of September this year. The first deliveries are to be in the end of the year. In fact, the camouflage of the vehicle harks back to historical Porsche 917 racing cars.

The focus here is put on the interplay between the highly sophisticated individual drive components. Furthermore, the models will include the powerful combination between a combustion engine and two independent electric motors.

One of the latter is positioned on the front axle and one in the drive line, acting on the rear wheels. In addition, there was also done a development of the software especially because of the engines. The result is extreme driving fun and one-of-a kind combination of minimal fuel consumption and maximum performance.

2013 Porsche 918 Spyder Prototype is designed as a plug-in hybrid car because of the mixture of high-performance combustion engine and cutting-edge electric motors. The extraordinary performance delivered is estimated at 770 hp (566 kW), while the fuel economy is around three litres per 100 kilometres.

Furthermore, this Porsche’s construction features also full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque with unit carrier, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear-axle steering and the upward-venting “top pipes” exhaust system. In fact, the 918 Spyder is offering a glimpse of what Porsche Intelligent Performance may be capable of in future.

  • Porsche 918 Spyder at the Gran Turismo Events EVO Nurburgring [video]

Porsche 918 Spyder is expected to hit the market in the late 2013. The sports hybrid car was put on serious test during these months including the 2012 Gran Turismo Nürburgring Evo event in Germany.

The production version of 918 Spyder is powered by a 4.6 liter V8 with 570HP (419 kW) and two electric motors – a 109HP (80 kW) on the front axle and a 122HP (90 kW) electric motor on the rear axle. This means a combined power of 770HP (566 kW). 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph). This performance comes at decent “price” – 3.0 litres per 100 km (94.1 mpg UK) with CO2 emission of 70 g/km. Furthermore, thanks to a 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, the model can travel more than 25 km (15.5 miles) on electricity alone at speeds up to 150 km/h (93 mph).

“What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance,” said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG.

  • Porsche 918 Spyder at Nurburgring in a Martini Suit

Martini-Porsche-918-thumbMartini Porsche 918 SpyderThe Porsche 918 Spyder has been spotted circling the Nurburgring as a part of development testing. It also has a new suit on which makes us all excited and tingly.

It does so mainly because it’s not that new. Martini was the official partner of the Porsche factory team between 1973 and 1978. It was then when the iconic “Martini Porsche” design came to be. The white, blue and red stripes saw many victories and today the legacy continues in tune with the future.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is a plug-in hybrid super sports car that uses two electric motors and a 570 hp V8 engine that can work in unison thus producing a combined power output of around 770 hp. That amount of power is good for a top speed of 325 km/h and an acceleration of less than 3 seconds until the 100 km mark. Astonishing feats when you think about the fuel consumption which is no more than 3.0-liters per 100 km.

Still, the focus is on the sports performance. The goal of the Nurburgring testings is to do a lap time of less than 7 minutes 22 seconds. Considering all the carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) that make up the body and the ceramic brakes, that time is quite feasible.

  • Porsche 918 Spyder concept debuts at Goodwood

Porsche 918 Spyder concept has just made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was introduced to the wide public back in the 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show, where it gathered praises and received overwhelming reaction from the sports car enthusiasts.

918 Spyder has unique hybrid technology, thanks to Porsche’s Intelligent Performance system. The latter is responsible for the estimated fuel consumption of the car of 3 liters per kilometer (or 94 mpg), equating to CO2 emissions of 70 g/km. The supercar is equipped with V8 petrol engine which generates more than 500 hp (368 kW). In addition this engine is assisted by two electric motors with a total of 160 kW (218hp).

The energy storage unit is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket, delivering a range in excess of 25km (16 miles) in the NEDC on purely electric power.

Thanks to the great power it has, this super sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a maximum of 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of more than 320 km/h (199 mph).
