  • 75 years of Gran Turismo Maserati celebrates the A6 1500

Maserati A6 1500 Gran Turismo - Front Angle

Gran Turismo is a way of life: a type of high-performance car, suitable for long distances and comfortable journeys.

It all began 75 years ago with the Maserati A6 1500, a model with a revolutionary spirit, the forerunner of a class of car that had never been seen before. It would go on to influence the automotive landscape all over the world, and successive generations of Maserati road cars.

In March 1947, the Geneva Motor Show witnessed the launch of the first Gran Turismo in history: the Tipo A6 (taking its name from the project), better known as the A6 1500 Gran Turismo.

Accorded an enthusiastic welcome by professionals and the public, the Tipo A6 represented the first step in a story in which Maserati has revamped the technology and design. The brand has held true to its hallmarks of elegance and high performance, ubiquitous in every model in the range and continuing in the next generation of the GranTurismo, the Trident brand’s first 100% electric car, due to be launched onto the market in 2023.

The history of the A6 1500 dates back to even earlier than 1947.

It actually goes all the way back to 1941 and the design of a sedan with a fixed head engine and twin camshaft, which had to be a close descendant of the 6CM’s, if of course revisited with Gran Turismo in mind. The upshot was an outstanding engine with a maximum output of 65 hp, with its single Weber 36DCR carburettor giving the car a top speed of 150 km/h.

The project was named A6, A for ‘Alfieri’, 6 for the number of cylinders.

It also featured independent wheel front suspension, with oscillating trapeziums and coil springs, rigid beam with leaf springs in the rear, hydraulically controlled brakes and disc wheels (spoked on request), with a 3.5” channel, 16” in diameter, and 5.50-16 tyres.

Intended for the Geneva Motor Show, the first model was produced in February 1947 by the Pininfarina bodyshop, bearing its characteristic mechanically operated retractable inside headlights. However, the clearest innovation from the past was its tubular chassis with circular cross-section components, to adopt some of the most fashionable trends at the time.

Not only was it the retractable headlights and chassis that would attract the attention of the public in Geneva, but also the plexiglass sunroof and a bonnet that could be raised from both sides or removed.

Resounding compliments and awards quickly led to the decision to give the green light to production, albeit with certain changes from the prototype. These included the restoration of more conventional lights, framed in chrome plating. The Extra Lusso version also featured a new, more modern grille and larger side windows.

Production of the A6 1500 Gran Turismo continued until 1950, with a cosmetic update taking place in 1948. Pininfarina would also make further changes to the bodywork: the embossed trim was removed from the front fenders, and two rear seats were added to the cabin.

Despite the relatively limited number of units produced, 58 over its 4 years, the A6 1500 was a milestone in Maserati history. At that point, the brand began to establish itself as a producer of tailor-made, high-quality road cars, with sport in its DNA. The glorious Pininfarina-designed bodywork would then go on to inspire successive generations of Maserati cars: a high-class, timeless design that continues to resound to this day in the current range, and will take the brand forward into the future. While the A6 1500 represented the beginning of the Maserati epic of road cars, like passing the baton, the new GranTurismo will mark the brand’s entry into the world of Full-Electric with Folgore, and will light the fuse of a new, innovative energy.

  • DEBUT: BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé Concept

BMW-Pininfarina-Gran-Lusso-Coupе-THUMBBMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé Concept has been unveiled after being teased more than ten days ago. The car is a joint work of two brands – BMW and Pininfarina which have blended in this concept cutting-edge technology, style, dynamics and aesthetics.

The vehicle will make its official debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013. BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé represents the exclusive interpretation of a luxurious BMW Coupé as seen through the eyes of Pininfarina.

The coupe adds a new dimension to exclusivity and it grabs the attention at first glance. Liberal surface areas and taut contours are the characteristics of its elegant car body. It has the typical for BMW proportions – a long wheelbase, stretched bonnet and set-back greenhouse. In addition, the concept car exudes balance and harmony through the mixture of technologies, dynamics and skilled craftsmanship.

The front fascia of the vehicle has broad and wheel-focused stance which radiates sheer presence and dynamics. The emblematic double-kidney grille and the road-focused headlights with their suggested twin circular look is what connect the car with the BMW family. At the same time the distinctive Pininfarina elements have been interpreted with Italian finesse to lend the front end a special flair.

Another highlight is the LED-headlights that create technically premium impression while adding a striking depth. The sporty front apron, the one-piece air intake which is larger at the wheels, draws attention to the car’s wide, sporty track.

When looked from the side, the BMW Gran Lusso Coupé Pininfarina Concept has a powerfully present silhouette. This is due to the taperings on the side that give a dynamic elegance and athletic shape to the body. The the long roof line flows elegantly into the rear to define the short tail end.

Many highlights accentuate the elegance of the side view such as the matt-sheen embellishment behind the front wheel, the Hofmeister kink, and the exclusively designed 21-inch wheels in matt-sheen aluminium, black and black chrome.

On the other hand the rear of the car has a sophisticated stance. The elongated side profile leads to a slender and elegant tail end. Striking horizontal elements imbue the entire rear end with a very broad, flat impression. Two elaborately shaped struts extend the roof pillar towards the rear. In addition, the tail lights which extend from the sides embrace the rear.

At the heart of the vehicle lies the V12 engine, but inside the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé can be found a contemporary take on classical values. In other words the interior is a fusion of modern elegance and authoritative dynamics. It is in special colour and is made of exclusive materials, includes geometrical details in the doors, centre console and dashboard binnacle – everything done by the Italian experts from Pininfarina.

The four-seater luxury coupe, in other words, offers ambience and comfort to the occupants to a great extend. Finest leather and kauri wood aged more than 48,000 years is used inside the cabin. Additionally, high-grade leather in black and a light shade of Tobacco Brown delivers warm ambience. The utilization of metal highlights in black chrome makes the perfect contrast to the extensive application of natural materials.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Pininfarina Sergio Concept Revealed [VIDEO]

Pininfarina-Sergio-Concept-THUMBPininfarina Sergio Concept which has been shown as a sketch few days ago is now making a debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The name Sergio is inspired by the man who led Pininfarina for 40 years and conceived some of the greatest car legends.

The new concept car celebrates the Life of Senator Sergio Pininfarina. The model is a two-seater barchetta with very compact, very sporty, racy, pure and sensual qualities. It is an exercise that Pininfarina decided to undertake on Ferrari 458 Spider mechanicals.

The revisited volumes and surface treatments emerge through the Sergio, which evokes the spirit of Pininfarina’s best achievements for Ferrari of the ‘60s and ‘70s. In addition, this is a real open air car, and it doesn’t have a cupola fitted to protect occupants. Therefore there are provided two helmets.

Furthermore, the Sergio is charactarized by a very simple and clear style. As one sees it, its proportions are pushed to the extreme, its dynamic front volume penetrates into a rear that is projected forward. The design principle here can be seen through the composition of the two body masses through a longitudinal black insert.

The aesthetics of the model are enhanced through the front semi-floating development with the spoiler under the front. This at the same time serves as a functional for the stabilization of the aerodynamic load and the heat exchange.

A virtual windscreen is also created by the aerodynamic deflector in front of the cockpit. In addition, the roll bar which is made like a wing surface is tuned excellently to the evolution of the flow coming from the front, adding a further down force effect.

At last, the rear holder and the extractor finish the design in a very functional manner. Here even the rear-view mirror takes on a fluid form that helps to divert air from the heads of the passengers.

Some important numbers for the Pininfarina Sergio Concept:

    • Maximum length: 4550 mm
    • Maximum width: 1940 mm
    • Maximum height: 1140 mm
    • Boot capacity: 110 litres

  • The 2012 Geneva Motor Show: Hots and Nots

Last week marked the end of the 82nd Geneva Motor Show – one of the biggest automotive exhibitions in the world.

More than 700,000 visitors feasted their eyes upon the creations of some 260 manufacturers while 11,500 media representatives channeled all there was to channel directly to your screens. It was a vibrant two week marathon of motoring nirvana.

There were ups and downs (mostly ups really), there was music, there was dancing…oh, and cars also.

The scale of the whole event does not allow to sum up everything in a single go and yet, we at Automobilesreview.com decided to give our humble opinion about some of the good, the bad and the ugly.

    The Lamborghini Aventador Speedster J

HOT: It’s the lunacy that gets you. Gravely controversial, this topless model caused quite a stir among enthusiasts and observers.

Why wouldn’t it? It’s an Avenatador without a windscreen – first class go-kart experience, an Ariel Atom on steroids.

Despite the fact that any human being would look ridiculous inside (more so after a good trashing), nobody would dare to make a joke about it – the person inside should be, by all accounts, a man of steel.

    Lamborghini Aventador J
    Lamborghini Aventador J

    Tata Megapixel

NOT: It’s got all the right features by the look of things: modern and round and crisp. But, even the name suggests, that it is essentially a big square.

Part of the reason why this is not getting too much attention might be because of the brand. Tata have yet to produce a car that has some aesthetic value.

We get that the idea behind the affordability and the fact that it is ideal for the streets of India but that’s just about it.

It’s too soulless and by looking at those side-sliding doors, original as they might be, we can’t help but thinking of a convenience store.

    Tata Megapixel
    Tata Megapixel

    Peugeot GTI Concept

HOT: You didn’t think we would miss a chance to include a hot hatch, did you? And hot it is this one. Peugeot 208 GTI – an audacious take on an almost thirty year old legend: Peugeot 205 GTI.

How do you stand up to the car that was claimed to be the embodiment of the hot hatch concept? How do you challenge Genesis?

At Peugeot think that an RCZ 200bhp 1.6 turbo engine, a wider-than-standard track and a multitude of handling smarts should do the trick.

We would really like to see that on the streets and chances are, we are not alone in this.

    Peugeot GTI Concept

    Carlsson Smart forTwo

NOT: Bringing a Smart to an autoshow is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Carlsson have made an effort to give this little critter some character but at best, they have given it an orange interior.

Power is up by a few figures – thanks to an ECU upgrade we get 110 bhp which is a lot, considering that the ForTwo weighs less than a lady’s handbag.

But unless you stick to driving it in a straight line, all is in vain we suspect as the ForTwo just doesn’t have the wheelbase for the job. It’s too short and understeery.

    Carlsson ForTwo Smart
    Carlsson ForTwo Smart

    Touring Disco Volante

HOT: No. This is not hot. Hot is too much of a vulgar word to describe it.

It’s a celebration of aesthetics, a cobweb of passion and style and curves a blissful incarnation of beauty itself. It’s a history lesson as well – Conceived in the 50s, the 1900 C52 Alfa Romeo “Flying Saucer” had a profile made to last and today, the Carrozzeria Touring Disco Volante is the living proof of that.

It’s a genuine car this and not just a pretty body with no engine in it. The world would be a better place with this on the streets so peace’s sake, let’s hope the motoring future looks like this.

    Touring Disco Volante
    Touring Disco Volante

    Hyundai i20

NOT: Bland, gray and consumer oriented, this ok family car, with an ok engine and ok quality inside and outside might be the right purchase to make…if one does not care about cars in general and is only interested in going from A to B safely.

You know, Hyundai have a perfectly sensible guarantee policies and… not interested?

No… Understandably you are not, because the i20 will never make your hair on your back stand up.

That is of course, you don’t find yourself driving it on the wrong side of the road with oncoming traffic…while being on fire.

    Hyundai i20

    2012-Geneva-Show-thumbThe Geneva Girls

    HOT:…definitely.

Let’s face it. What would the show be without some models…next to the models?

A big gear-head convention with people mooning about, calculating power-to-weight ratios and arguing over naught to sixty times.

We are not saying, that the 2012 Geneva Motor Show wasn’t like that, but at the very least, the girls were there to balance things out.

We also like how this particular model is thematically coordinated with the car represented – the Bertone Nuccio concept. All Seems legitimate.

    The Geneva Girls
    The Geneva Girls

    Mia Electric

NOT: Don’t get us wrong. It’s an interesting idea this – a tubular sort of, 3 seated van.

And anything that can offer a McLaren F1 type of driving position makes us tingle with excitement. It’s called the Mia and it looks like a Smart stretch which by itself sounds ironic.

Sadly, this is where the similarities with the F1 end. Strictly for the urban environment, this French-made “Microbus” gets its power from a 13 bhp electric, but hardly electrifying, engine that has a range of around 80 miles.

True, it weighs no more than 810 kg with the batteries on board but that’s courtesy to its plastic body. Label it “hot” and it might melt.

    Mia Electric

    Pininfarina Cambiano Concept

HOT: Much like the Disco Volante, this concept deserves an admirable batch of flattering adjectives.

It’s beautifully styled with clean and simple lines, it has some daring features like that roof over there – no doubt eye candy for all present at the unveiling.

But while the Disco Volante is basically an Alfa 8C Competizione underneath, the Cambiano is an ultra complex plug in hybrid that has electric motors on each wheel and a small diesel turbine that can charge the batteries or provide power by itself.

The overall maximum power output reaches 600 kW with torque being 640 Nm and constantly available. Take it out for a spin and by the time the juice runs out, you’d be 800 km away from home. So, clever and sleek – certainly a pageant winner.

    Pininfarina Cambiano Concept
    Pininfarina Cambiano Concept

    Bentley EXP 9 F Concept

NOT: We are gravely sorry, but Bentley should stick to what they do best – making Continentals.

Just because the world has gone mad-crazy about SUV‘s does not mean that there’s a place for everybody on the market table.

Besides, its not really a looker is it? It looks like a Continental with the aerodynamics taken out  – anguliar, upright and awkward.

Also, with those overcomplicated headlights and ridiculous wheels, certainly the EXP 9 F is not doing too much to win our hearts. It may appeal a footballer’s heart but that’s as far as it will go.

    Bentley EXP 9 F
    Bentley EXP 9 F

    Gumpert Apollo Enraged

HOT: This Gumpert Apollo in particuliar is not the melt-my-heart kind of hot (the sheer size of that rear wing is hardly endearing).

It’s more like heartburn type of hot – What you are looking at is a V8 lunatic on the loose, angry and out to get you.

If underestimated, this Griffin will trample over your ego with 780 horses (from a V8!!). But you can guess that by yourself, can’t you? The clues are pretty much in how they called it – the Enraged.

What’s more, you most certainly won’t be looking too hot stuck on a speed bump, but when a ride goes that low, chances are you are going to grind over half the streets in your town. On the plus side, it’s quite probable to be an absolute hit on trackdays, leaving behind Porsches and BMW‘s trailing behind.

  • Pininfarina Cambiano named most beautiful concept car

pininfarina-cambiano-THUMBIf you have followed thoroughly this year’s edition of 2012 Geneva Motor Show, then you have probably seen already many beautiful cars. But have you pondered for a moment on which one appealed to you the most?

Well, if you still don’t have the answer, there has recently been made a poll, in which according to the public the most beautiful car to be seen in Geneva was the Pininfarina Cambiano Concept Car.

The competition was fierce, but nonetheless the concept vehicle has managed to gather most of the votes and gained the “the most beautiful concept of 2012 Geneva Motor Show” as well “the most beautiful concept car”.

In the poll took part other significant vehicles such as Italdesign Giugiaro Brivido, Infiniti Emerg-e, Bertone Nuccio, Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept, and other amazing vehicles that achieved a lot of success in Geneva.

With the Cambiano, Pininfarina proposes an electric traction luxury sport sedan, which is in addition elegant and sporting, refined and comfortable. It emphasizes a pure synthesis of forefront design and engineering research with optimal attention to environment friendliness.

The new concept car embodies the Pininfarina expertise in the field of styling, design and research in the field of sustainable mobility. Undoubtedly, this concept sets a new benchmark for environment-conscious luxury vehicles. Its main strong point is the electric traction, which translates into zero emissions in the urban cycle. In fact, this is the highest all-electric range currently available on the market. This plug-in electric sedan combines top performance, excellent utility and the comfort of a luxury car.

  • Pininfarina Cambiano Concept

Pininfarina-Cambiano-Concept-thumbIt’s been a lengthy wait but it was worth it. It’s the Pininfarina Cambiano – the design house’s latest automotive top model. The idea behind it is to sort of celebrate the Pininfarina establishment. 2012 is a dual anniversary for them: 30 years with the Style Centre, set up in Cambiano in 1982 as “Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche”, and 10 years of technological innovation with the Engineering Center that was put in motion in 2002. So this one had to be special. It had to blend genuine good looks with awe inspiring technological advancements. And the end product does exactly that actually: It’s a Plug in hybrid with four electric motors and a turbine. At the same time it is utterly simplistic and elegant, baring fluidic lines and has little to no details in excess on its body. It is all about sustainability, eco-conscious thinking, efficiency, grace and a bit of flash.

By flash I do mean the mad scissor doors on the right side of it, don’t I? There’s no pillar between them and it all seems quite functional but you can’t help but thinking: “Cool”. On the other hand…side, the driver’s door is kind of lonely which creates a sporty coupe feel. Then there’s the panoramic roof – part translucent, part transparent, it supports itself on a rather futuristic frame that resembles a honeycomb structure. The whole car is meant to be slippery as it has spent quite a while in Pininfarina‘s wind tunnel. Weight reduction is also a priority – the cabin cell is from carbon fiber, while the front and rear frames that support all the techy bits are from aluminum. All and all, the Cambiano weighs 1695 kg which is astonishingly light for a hybrid.

Inside, light channels carved trough the ceiling, the doors and the floor remind you of those emergency paths you are supposed to follow upon evacuation in commercial airplanes. The floor itself is made up from recycled wooden pieces – one of the Cambiano‘s many sustainable traits.

Most sustainable of all is the drivetrain. Or should I say drivetrains? It’s got four electric motors (one for each wheel, two at the front frame, two at the rear one). They are a product of the Magnet Marelli company and each one of them provides a continuous supply of 60 kW with peaks of 150 kW. Simple math tells us then, that the Cambiano has an overall maximum power output of 600 kW. Torque is 640 Nm. All motors operate independently and incorporate things such as energy regeneration upon braking, electronic stability control with a Vectoring Stability Program (sends different lumps of torque to each wheel) and ABS. On Sport Mode, zero to a hundred takes 4.2 seconds and the top speed ends up being 250 km/h.

    Pininfarina Cambiano Concept
    Pininfarina Cambiano Concept

The Cambiano however, doesn’t stop with the electric motors. It also has an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) which is basically a 50 kW micro turbine made by Bladon Jets. It runs on sips of diesel and charges the batteries when needed. On the flip side, it can also provide power directly to the motors. Although it weights only 40 kg and is Euro 6 complaint, the idea is to avoid running it as much as possible. When the battery charge falls bellow 20%, it automatically kicks in. At speeds of 50 km/h or less it shuts down as it assumes you are in a traffic jam. Of course the driver has the power to override these processes with a fully manual control on the turbine. The whole system is so smart, that it will learn from the GPS system on what kind of road the Cambiano is. After doing so, it will optimize the usage of the APU in what seems the best and most frugal way.

The lithium ion batteries are provided by FAAM and are placed in between the rear seats and rear axle. The pack has a capacity of 50 kW/h and a peak power delivery of 500 kW. At a 6 Kw/h grid, recharging takes 6h while APU recharging takes only 52 minutes. On a single charge, the Cambiano will run for 250 km. With the turbine running, that range goes up to 800 km. The packs are also temperature regulated so no external factors should play a role on the efficiency.

It really is a master piece this car – it has the looks, it has the clever insides, it will soften up even the most skeptical environmentalist while putting a smile on a demanding gear head. If the Cambiano becomes a prime example of future motoring, very soon there won’t be any faults with the mainstream cars and we won’t have anything to talk about with our friends.

  • Alfa Romeo 2uettottanta Concept at Qatar Motor Show

2011-Pininfarina-2uettottanta-thumbAttenders at this month’s Qatar Motor Show are in for a treat because a Pininfarina Alfa will be taking part as an exhibition. It is the truly delightful Alfa 2uettottanta concept – a familiar face not only because it has been around for a while (barer of the 2010 Car Design of the Year Award) but also because it is a direct descendant to the historic Pininfarina Alfa Romeo Spider, also known as “Duetto”

The genetic code of the roadster icon can be detected easily by those who know where to look at. The 2uettottanta‘s engine for instance is a 1750 cc unit positioned longitudinally that echos the 1968 Spider “Veloce” – one of the many incarnations of the Duetto. The Alfa Romeo shield is still as emblematic as ever and so is the red paint that acts as a definitive characteristic in all Alfas. Most of all however, the thing that brings up the Duetto name is the idea itself – It still is a 2 seated, simple roadster, a passion on wheels and a joy to drive.

    Alfa Romeo Pininfarina 2uettottanta (2011)
    Alfa Romeo Pininfarina 2uettottanta (2011)

While it does stay true to its ancestors, in no way we can call it ancient. Dimensions stand at 1797 mm in width, 4212.6 mm in length and 1280 mm in height – wider but just a bit shorter and lower than the original Duetto. The body exhibits a multitude of curves and  dimples which give an overall feel of slipperiness and elegance. There are no materials in excess, no protrusions. Instead, it is smooth as a soap bar. A line slashes trough the whole car horizontally which in a way improves the road stance (visually).

Will this superb piece of work become a production reality or will it remain a monument that marks the immaculate alliance between Pininfarina and Alfa Romeo, we’ll just have to wait and see.The Qatar Motor Show goes public on the 25th of January and it will host a number of companies among which four Italian ones, including Pininfarina.

  • Pininfarina Cambiano Concept Update

Pininfarina-CAMBIANO-concept-thumbNew teasers coming from Pininfarina about their Cambiano concept and the prognosis is looking good. We still can’t be sure however, that this will be a whole car for so far we have only seen halves of it. No worries though, because what we see here leaves a decent amount of space for pondering and speculation.

Judging from the pictures down below we have a sleek sporty coupe with a remarkably short engine bay. The design ergonomics, with all those curves and lines, feel slippery and dynamic. Also, that tiny wing-mirror hints a great deal of aerodynamic conscientiousness. Then there’s the party piece – a full sized panoramic roofline held together by something that looks like an exoskeleton. Neat! The interior boasts a roomy cabin with seating for four (or two if it really turns out to be a half-car) and there are some wooden veneers in the luggage department, so that’s interesting. The steering wheel brings to mind an airplane’s techy analogue cockpit while the cappuccino color patterns counter with the aesthetics of an Italian coffee shop.

Cambiano is the name of the small town which houses Pininfarina‘s works. This year the community is to mark two anniversaries: 30 years with the  Pininfarina Styling Centre (called, back in1982, the “Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche/Pininfarina Study and Research”) and 10 years of development with the Pininfarina Engineering Center.
