  • Radford joins 101st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Radford Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Edition - Front

Next month, Radford’s Pikes Peak Edition Type 62-2, a unique car, will debut at The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, presented by Gran Turismo, during its 101st running on Sunday, June 25th, 2023. The car will be driven by accomplished Rally and Race Car Driver, Tanner Foust, who won his class at the 2021 event. The Pikes Peak Type 62-2 is a truly global project, with Radford working with key partners and suppliers across several countries. The car’s design was completed in France, and its drivetrain was developed and built in Austria. Meanwhile, the all-new carbon monocoque was created using 3D printing in the UK, with final assembly and project management taking place at Radford’s new HQ in California.

    The Design

Alan Derosier of Legend Automobiles designed the Pikes Peak Edition Type 62-2 based on a roadcar, ensuring it was fit for the specific demands of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The car needed a large rear wing and an advanced cooling system to account for the increased power output and decreased air density at high altitude. CAD designer Sam Ofsowitz brought the design to life, with Stratasys providing the prototype body work and tooling. Over 70 additional parts were 3D printed remotely at Stratasys HQ, with composite materials supplied by Aria. The car features the iconic JPS livery and a driver-focused central seating position with an FIA-approved, lightweight racing seat designed by Tillett. It has been built to handle the brutal conditions of the mountain race.

    The Performance

With a weight of only 861 kgs, this race-ready version mostly uses the same bodywork as the standard Type 62-2, but with a 230mm wider body and a full composite monocoque instead of the original aluminum-based chassis. The front and rear subframes and suspension geometry have been upgraded, while the newly designed underbody and gooseneck rear airfoil complete the modifications to the car’s body. Extensive aerodynamic computer simulations have been conducted to optimize the bodywork for maximum downforce, aerodynamic efficiency, and balance.

The drivetrain of the Pikes Peak Edition has been designed to handle the extreme conditions of the race. JUBU Performance has incorporated higher performance components and sequential shifting into the drivetrain, which produces 710 horsepower from the supercharged 3.5L V6 DOHC engine. The paddle shift sequential gearbox allows for quick and precise gear changes, helping the car achieve a top speed of 160mph and an impressive 0-60mph sprint in under 2.2 seconds.

Radford Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Edition - Side

To ensure that the engine is running at its best in the high altitude environment of Pikes Peak, Radford has worked closely with Mobil1 to develop a custom oil mix that is tailored specifically for the Pikes Peak Edition. Additionally, Optima Batteries has provided their lightest battery, the Optima Orangetop lithium batteries, which maximizes power, performance, and reliability while maintaining a compact and lightweight design.

It’s great to see that Scarbo Performance has led the project, bringing their expertise in racing program development and engineering. Their involvement adds another layer of credibility to the Pikes Peak Edition and assures that the car has been thoroughly engineered to perform at its best in the race. It’s also impressive that the team has collaborated with a range of experts in their respective fields, including Legend Automobiles, Crown Concepts, Stratasys, Aria, JUBU Performance, Mobil1, Optima Batteries, AP Racing, Yokohama, and Dymag, to bring the car to life.

Radford Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Edition - Top

Ant Anstead: “We are incredibly excited to take part in this iconic event. Pikes Peak is the quintessential American hill climb so it made perfect sense for Radford to create a bespoke one-off model for the occasion. We have been in development with this car since January alongside the team at Scarbo Performance and we are all looking forward to seeing the car in action. And to have JPS colours appear again in international motorsport is like a boyhood dream come true”

Tanner Foust: “I am honoured to have the chance to pilot this machine up the Pikes Peak course! It has been great working with the whole team at Radford and I am looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the Radford Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Edition.”

It’s great to hear that the Radford Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Edition will undergo initial testing at the Radford Racing School in Phoenix, Arizona, which is the official test track of Radford. This will provide a good opportunity to fine-tune the car’s performance and ensure it is ready for the upcoming event. Additionally, the car will undergo traditional testing sessions held prior to the event to ensure it is fully prepared for the challenging conditions of Pikes Peak.

  • Global deliveries of Pikes Peak Continental GT limited edition

2021 Bentley Continental Pikes Peak GT1

The 15 striking Pikes Peak Continental GT by Mulliner limited edition cars have made their way around the world to their new owners. Celebrating Bentley’s record-breaking run up the world-renowned Pikes Peak course in Colorado, USA, this unique and exclusive run has already sold out, with buyers across four different continents testament to its truly global appeal.

The Pikes Peak Continental GT Limited Edition is part of Bentley Mulliner’s new ‘Collections’ portfolio and is restricted to just 15 vehicles, hand-built at Bentley’s carbon-neutral factory in Crewe, England.

Owners are spread around the world, in locations as far apart as Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, New Zealand, Latvia and the United Kingdom. Five of the new owners come from the USA, home to the world-renowned course in Colorado, with cars arriving across the country – from New York (Manhattan), to Florida (Fort Lauderdale), to Michigan (Troy), California (Rancho Mirage) and Nebraska (Omaha).

Eighteen months ago, a race-prepared version of a standard W12-powered Continental GT beat the coveted time for a production car by more than eight seconds, climbing almost 5,000 ft through Pikes Peak’s 156 bends in just 10 minutes, 18.4 seconds. The world’s finest Grand Tourer was driven on that occasion by three-time Pikes Peak champion, former ‘King of the Mountain’, Rhys Millen.

To match the look of the record-breaking car, a third of customers have opted for the Mountain Decal Event Livery for their Limited Edition Continental GTs, whilst three owners have chosen a subtle gloss black exterior paint finish.

All 15 Pikes Peak Continental GT by Mulliner cars honour Bentley’s achievements on the world’s most demanding hill climb. Bentley first achieved the record for fastest production SUV with the Bentyaga in 2018, and then the outright production car record with the Continental GT the following year.

    Eye-Catching Detail

The Pikes Peak Continental GT Limited Edition is distinguished by exclusive Radium by Mulliner paintwork, complemented by a lightweight, carbon fibre body kit. Acid Green brake calipers and Pirelli P Zero Colour Edition tyres add to the eye-catching detail.

The front, lower bumper inserts are enhanced with gloss black detailing, mirrored on the roof panel, wing mirrors and rear surfaces. Combined with a Pikes Peak decal on the front fender, the distinctive appearance hints at the Limited Edition’s record-breaking lineage.

Mulliner’s 22-inch Driving Specification wheels in Gloss Black are standard, while an optional ‘100’ grille celebrates the fact that the record-breaking Pikes Peak run took place in Bentley’s centenary year.

The sporting theme continues inside the luxurious cabin, where Alcantara with contrasting Radium thread stitching adorns much of the soft trim areas. A honeycomb Radium stitching design to the steering wheel is complemented by a radium strip across the middle, matching the Pikes Peak race car.

The fascia design on the passenger side sports a graphic design showing a section of the famous Pikes Peak track itself, with five different graphics being used across the 15-car run, along with the record-breaking time of 10:18.488.

Pikes Peak Radium embroidery continues on the headrest stitching, contrast binding on the overmats, with Pikes Peak treadplates and exclusive B&O speaker covers in Black Anodised and Radium finish. The superlative cabin includes the Continental GT’s innovative Bentley Rotating Display.

The Pikes Peak Continental GT by Mulliner is equipped with the same, advanced 12-cylinder petrol engine as the car that broke the record last year. The twin-turbocharged Bentley W12 develops 626 bhp and 900 Nm of torque, accelerating the Continental GT from 1-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds) with a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph).

  • A Special Audi RS5 For the Pikes Peak Climb

    Audi-RS5-Pikes-Hill-Teaser-thumbAudi-RS5-Pikes-Hill-Teaser-medium

Audi have released this image to the public in connection with the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) that’s due next week – a 12 mile climb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. Between the contenders and the 1,440 m altitude finish line weave more than 156 bends. Obviously, Audi plan to surprise us with whatever this quattro incarnation is.

The current road going RS5 is an impressive coupe enough – a 4.2-liter V8 FSI unit underneath its shell that produces 444 hp and 430 Nm of torque. A 7-speed “S tronic” dual clutch semi-automatic channels the power to all four wheels via the iconic and clever quattro AWD system that has been around since the 80s.

All of that raises the bar of expectation a lot. Audi have a history on the PPIHC (two records and a couple of gold and silver medals) and do not intend to throw it away. That’s why the also want us to watch this:

  • Dacia Duster No Limit Rally Car

Dacia has officially unveiled the Duster No Limit Rally Car, which will compete at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The vehicle is developed specially for this race and features some very interesting components. It is an exceptional, extremely powerful car. Duster No Limit was constructed by Tork Engineering and Renault Sport Technologies.

Dacia Duster No Limit complies with the specific regulations of the American competition’s Unlimited class which sets no upper limit on the size or power output of the engine. There is also no minimum weight and any tyres can be used. Furthermore, the transmission system or aerodynamics have no limits, too.

So, first of all, Duster No Limit is powered by the brutal 3.8 liter bi-turbo V6 from Nissan GT-R. Of course, it is highly tuned – 862PS (634 kW) and mated to a 6-speed sequential Sadev transmission.

The aerodynamics package for Duster No Limit includes massive rear wing, brutal extensions and a large front lip spoiler. Everything is developed in the wind tunnel for maximum performance.

The car will be driven by Jean-Philippe Dayraut, a three-time winner of the Trophée Andros.

“The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is the only event where you get to keep a monster like this in check while drifting at speeds of 200kph on a course which features a mix of asphalt and dirt,” commented Jean-Philippe Dayraut.

“I can’t think of any other form of motorsport where such cars are authorised.”, he finished
