  • VW Passat R36

A 220 kW / 300 hp 3.6 liter six cylinder direct injection gasoline engine will power the Volkswagen Passat R36 – the most powerful Passat of all time. As part of standard equipment power transmission is handled by a direct shift gearbox (DSG) and permanent four-wheel drive (4MOTION). The top speed of the sedan is an electronically regulated 250 km/h. In terms of speed, the Volkswagen Passat R36 outstrips every other Volkswagen in accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h: the sedan reaches the 100 km/h mark in 5.6 seconds (5.8 seconds for the Variant).

The VW Passat R36 was conceived by Volkswagen Individual, the specialist team for very fast and/or special models. Following the Golf R32, the Volkswagen Passat R36 is the second series version under the “R” sports label. The “R32” label already represents a top-selling model; the first Golf R32 (177 kW / 241 hp) based on the VW Golf Mk IV and introduced in midsummer 2002, took off better than expected in every way; 14,000 cars were sold. On the foundation of this success the idea arose to develop a whole series of R models in the future. In Autumn 2005 the second Golf R32, 184 kW / 250 hp, equipped with 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard equipment, was introduced. It was also a terrific seller. And it continues to sell well today. The “R36” shows how sporty a Passat Sedan and a Passat Variant can be.

Visually, with a whole range of specific features the Volkswagen Passat R36 shows that it is the most dynamic model of the globally successful series. Special features of the front section: an R-specific bumper and a crest radiator grill in matte chrome finish. Other R exclusives are the dual fins of the upper radiator grill designed in aluminum look and the radiator air inlets in slatted look.

The rear of the Volkswagen Passat R36 sedan features a newly designed spoiler on the luggage compartment lid; in the case of the Volkswagen Passat R36 Variant a new roof edge spoiler provides additional downward force to the rear axle. Identical for both body versions: the chrome dual exhaust pipes. On the sides it is, among other things, the newly designed 18-inch “Omanyt” alloy wheels and wheel arch extensions in the car color that were specially developed for the Volkswagen Passat R36.

An overview (partial) of R36 exterior details:

Similar to the Golf R32, Volkswagen Individual designed interior equipment especially for the sportiest Passat. The instruments and middle console are finished in “Engine Spin” décor. The leather steering wheel in R design is especially slip-proof; it features an R36 logo in the lower spokes. The pedals have a stainless steel finish. In addition, as standard equipment the Passat R36 will be delivered with a sport seating system together with electric 12-way adjustment, R36 door sill trims, new instrument lights (white illumination) and an automatic transmission selector lever in aluminum look. A special highlight is the optionally available 14-way leather seating system with seats that are electrically adjustable on the sides, affording optimal side support for drivers and passengers of different sizes.

  • VW R GT Passat

The answers to those questions might very well be found among an intriguing trio of project vehicles built specially for the SEMA Show. The Jetta R GT, Passat R GT and Touareg R GT are not just flights of fancy branding. The badging on each of these one-offs tells a story of advanced platforms enriched with strategic applications of factory and aftermarket expertise.

HPA replaced the base 2.5-liter engine with a twin-turbocharged, twin-intercooled, 550-horsepower variant of VW’s 3.2-liter, 240-horsepower six-cylinder V6 that powers the R32. To ensure that every bit of the torque gets to the ground in the most entertaining way possible, HPA fit VW’s highly acclaimed DSG twin-clutch transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, both systems suitably modified by HPA to complement the engine’s bravura performance. A KW FIA GT 3-way coil-over race suspension and WRC-spec Brembo brake system were also installed to help harness the forces unleashed by the twin-turbo V6.

Cloaked with a special smoke gray paint treatment in the best Q-ship tradition, the revised coachwork includes new front and rear bumper fascias, side rocker panels and bespoke rear spoiler, offset by contrasting graphics and smoked glass treatment. The Jetta R GT’s willingness to run is revealed by the huge Michelin ultra-high-performance tires mounted to the 9.5 x 19-inch custom-built, forged-aluminum, modular Avus® alloy wheels. Should the Jetta R GT hit the track, changing to a set of 9.5 x 18-inch mono-block, forged-aluminum DTM-spec Avus wheels is quick and easy with their DTM-style center locks and the AP Racing air jacks incorporated within the Jetta’s framework.

Similar technology and design was applied to create the Passat R GT, born from a European-spec 2006 Passat 3.2 V6 FSI with DSG transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A rewarding runner in its own right, the European Passat 3.2’s powerful engine, world-beating transmission and all-wheel grip provide an excellent basis for a SEMA special. The mechanical transformation by HPA resulted in dynamics that launch the Passat R GT into supercar dimensions, and its sleek, entirely modern bodywork was given the muscular look of a highly toned European high-performance sedan by Volkswagen designers.

    Volkswagen Passat R GT

Modifications begin with a twin-turbo conversion package that features dual exhaust manifolds, each carrying a Garrett GT25R ball-bearing turbocharger. Charge cooling is optimized by twin intercoolers, and the exhaust gases pass through a quad bypass emissions system that retains the stock catalytic converters. It boasts an extraordinary output of 575 horsepower and massive torque to match.

The Passat R GT’s track-prepped chassis is suspended by a KW Variant 3-way coil-over racing setup, and the required upgraded braking is supplied by the Brembo-supplied system available on the Phaeton. The Passat R GT rides on the same high-performance Michelin radials as fitted to the Jetta R GT, as well as the forged-aluminum Avus® alloy wheels. HPA also modified the DSG gearbox for more revs between each upshift to match the engine’s increased output.

Volkswagen’s California design studio chose gleaming candy white paint to clothe the modified bodywork, consisting of new front and rear bumper fascias and side rocker panels. Contrasting black leather cloaks the interior, offset by touches of white piano lacquer trim, a white Apple iPod® module up front and a white Sony PSP® in the rear. Of course, befitting a car that can cross Europe in hours, it features VW’s highest-quality sound system and full navigation.

  • VW Passat Design Package

Passat customers can now upgrade their vehicle using the “design package” from Volkswagen Individual: the package gives both the saloon and the estate versions an appealing, personal and sporty touch.

The love of the car is often reflected in the details: with dark chrome radiator grille, side window trims and rear lettering in the new “design package” for the Passat, for example. The anthracite-painted 18 inch “Chicago” alloy wheels with five double-spoke design and gloss finish are also an eye-catcher. These are combined with a 15 millimetre lower sports suspension which is specifically tuned to match the wheels. Tinted rear and side windows match the dark chrome and wheels.

A look at the vehicle interior shows the attractive contrast between dark nappa and light-coloured “Sensitive” leather in “Snow Beige”. The two-tone concept is adhered to throughout, with the door panelling also in “Snow Beige”, for example. The multi-function steering wheel and gearstick knob also have light-coloured stitching and the fabric foot mats have a light-coloured surround. The dark, brushed aluminium decorative strips and the sill panel strips with “Individual” lettering give the vehicle an individual touch.

    Volkswagen Passat

Other useful features in the “design package” include fog lights, heated windscreen washer jets, heated front and rear seats which can be regulated separately and two-zone “Climatronic” air conditioning system. The “RCD 200” radio-CD system with four speakers in the front completes the range.

The “design package” for the Passat and Passat Estate is available to order across Europe for the Sportline equipment range. The package is available in Germany for 6 102 EUR with normal chrome fittings and exclusively with dark chrome for 6 402 EUR starting in the autumn.

    Other individualisation products
In addition to the “design package”, Volkswagen Individual also offers a wheel range with four high quality wheels in both 17 and 18-inch format for the Passat and Passat Estate. Alongside the “Chicago” model, this includes the 18-inch “Samarkand” alloy wheels, the 17-inch “Avignon” alloy wheels and the five double-spoke model “Siena”. The “Siena” and “Avignon” models are available in titan silver or sterling silver. The “RCD 500 Dynaudio Sound” sound system with ten-channel amplifier and ten speakers can be ordered on request and can be combined with the “RNS MFD-DVD” DVD navigation system.

  • VW Passat 3.6 L

The Volkswagen Passat, the mid-sized car that forever changed the attitude of owning a “grown up” family sedan and wagon, is ready to take this popular segment to greater heights and was unveiled at one of metro Detroit‘s premier automotive events during a press conference on August 2, 2005 at Meadow Brook Mansion.

For the first time ever, Volkswagen has chosen the burgeoning Meadow Brook Concours d’ Elegance, which has emerged as one of the most renowned automotive events in the world, to take the wraps off its most powerful Passat ever, the 280-horsepower 2006 VW Passat 3.6L—an all-new car that arrives at U.S. dealerships in two months. For car enthusiasts and admirers of renowned engine designs, the 3.6L marks the return of VW’s groundbreaking narrow-angle six cylinder powerplant – with a significant growth in displacement, brawn and refinement – to the Passat model line up (this historic engine is known as the VR6).

This new Passat will be among the most powerful front-drive, family midsize cars ever offered, with the refinement, safety and speed of a true Autobahn bred sedan. The V6 offers a nearly class-leading power-to-weight ratio that allows this family hauler to propel from 0-60 mph in just 6.6 seconds.

Prior to the launch of this new top-of-the-line V6, Volkswagen will bring the 2006 VW Passat 3.6L model to the U.S. market beginning this month. This all-new sedan will represent the most, sophisticated and affordable German-built family midsize car on the market today, with the starting price at less than $23,000.

    VW Passat 3.6 L Front

Significantly, the new Passat’s base engine is upgraded to a sophisticated new four-cylinder engine called the 2.0T. This two-liter is efficient and sporty and uses a turbocharger and an intercooler for cool, higher-density intake air. The 2.0T’s high-end breathing is further enhanced by its four-valves per cylinder. The engine’s overall efficiency begins with an advanced direct-injection fuel delivery system that culminates in 200 hp at 5,100 revolutions per minute, and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque all the way from 1,800 rpm to 5,000 rpm—an extraordinary torque curve that provides plenty of pulling power from the low end through the top.

Soon after the launch of this new 2.0T engine, Volkswagen’s renowned narrow-angle six-cylinder technology will make its return to the Passat line up. With the Passat’s return to a transverse engine mount, Volkswagen will re-introduce a very refined and powerful version of its famous narrow-angle V6 (widely called the VR6; this version’s cylinder bank’s create a “V” angle of just 10.6 ?). This newly advanced V6 engine has higher-displacement, four-valves-per-cylinder, and variable valve timing, and promises 280 hp at 6,200 rpm and 265 ft.-lbs, at just 2,750. Mated to this ultimate V6, as standard equipment, will be Volkswagen’s refined six-speed automotive transmission with Tiptronic™ and sport mode selection (no plans for a manual).

Later in the model year, Volkswagen will once again offer the Passat in a wagon version as well. Both the sedan and its variant will offer a 4Motion® (all-wheel-drive) version later in the 2006 model year. Models will therefore include in both body styles: a Passat “Value Edition” 2.0T; a Passat 2.0T; a Passat 3.6L and soon a 3.6L 4Motion.

The launch of the new Passat in the U.S. is no small event. When it arrived on North America’s shores back in 1997, the contemporary Volkswagen Passat sedan and wagon essentially started the transformation of the common family sized car market. The Passat proved that the inevitable midsize car could actually invigorate drivers and passengers alike. It not only offered great utility, value, safety and room but also dynamic European styling, innovative technology and a “real” German-bred driving experience.

Today, this same model is setting a new target for all those manufacturers who have played catch up to meet the new expectations of so many family car buyers. As expected in a modern Volkswagen, the all-new 2006 Passat has been stridently refined and moved closer than ever to perfection in its attention to detail, advanced technology, Teutonic driving qualities and uncompromising safety design and features.

Actually, this new 2006 Passat is the sixth all-new generation of Volkswagen’s midsize car line that can trace its roots back to the Dasher and Quantum of the 1970s and 80s. The outgoing generation that began with the 1998 model in the U.S. was the most successful of any Volkswagen midsize with sales in the U.S. averaging more than 75,000 a year (from 1998-2004).

While the dictum of form always follows function is an enduring foundation of Volkswagen design, the exterior and interior styling of the departing but contemporary Passat dazzled this sleepy market with its simple sporty European styling and a refined German driving experience. It was hailed universally as one of the most acclaimed and trendsetting in recent automotive history; and, if imitation is the best form of flattery, then the Passat ranks at the highest end of the admiration spectrum as well.

Fortunately, just as more and more automakers play follow-the-leader and begin perfecting their cloning, Volkswagen’s designers have breathed new passion and power into the look, ambience and spatial presence of an all-new 2006 Passat.

Overall, the sixth Passat is by far the most skillfully refined, secure and technically advanced of any iteration before it. Befitting this progressive target for the newest B class, Volkswagen’s designers harmoniously sculpted a car that is characterized with an almost avant-garde potency and class—one that is clearly muscular, but in a purposeful, sinewy way that commands respect but in no way demands it.

The new Passat goes proudly into the busy world of modern family life with a new medallion-shaped grille accented by brilliantly clear, clean, high-tech headlight housings that exude the precision engineering and advanced production of this new leader of the family class. Its eyes, the front lights, willingly challenge the road ahead, staring it down with the focus of a highly prepared athlete anxious for competition.

This confident stance is also seen in the new Passat’s silhouette – paralleling in a contemporary way its trendsetting predecessor – arching with functionality, beauty and a timeless tension that creates a visual balance when admiring eyes travel pleasantly from front to rear. At the car’s back, one can see a classic and dynamic Volkswagen design leap that harmoniously mixes sharply tailored rear lighting with an enduring sporty and functional overall design.

The new Passat’s pure exterior dimensions have broadened slightly to accommodate, partly, a more functional and ergonomic interior. The wheelbase lengthens slightly to a new 106.7 inches versus the previous 106.4. Overall length is more dramatic: now 188.2 inches versus 185.2 before. The body is wider as well (71.7 inches as opposed to 68.7). Stability in general should further be enhanced with a wider track Passat layout, both at the front and rear, which measures 61.1 inches (previously 59.6).

A clear indication of the new Passat’s quality foundation is its static torsion stiffness that is measured at a 57 percent higher level than its predecessor’s already solid static rigidity. Dynamically, the new Passat also improves on the Passat’s traditionally stiff driving tolerances that allow for a refined chassis and subsequent ability for engineers to dial in optimum suspension settings and improvements.

The Passat’s fundamentals are the tireless collaboration of designers, the R&D teams, engineers and production experts who have allowed for extremely innovative production methods, new techniques, and materials. This production process is a complex array of advances but the most dramatic contributor is achieved through the use of more high-strength, yet lighter materials throughout and an advanced, highly automated, laser-welding system that requires a battalion of new-generation robotics and elaborate laser-measuring check points. This results in a dramatic increase in laser welded seams, and also helps establish a significant breakthrough in weight barriers that allow for improvements in size, the aforementioned rigid integrity of the overall chassis, and the car’s new class-leading amenities.

Inside, a simple glance reveals another evolution in Volkswagen’s renowned interior design and simple but unrelenting attention to detail. Residing in a new Passat is again a unique and progressive automotive experience: whether at the wheel or residing in the front or rear, the occupants find a fresh, stylish, modern design that remains strikingly simple with use of top quality materials, attention to comfort, driving and details throughout all models, from the standard trim level that symbolizes Volkswagen’s commitment to value for the money, to the top-levels such as those found in numerous equipment options and stand-alone packages.

More exterior room for the new Passat certainly translates into more width and legroom, especially in the rear seating area, where it grows from 35.3 inches to 37.7”. New rear vents for the standard air conditioning and heater also provide more comfort at the car’s stern, and the trunk, which provides a 60/40 split folding seat if needed and pass through for much longer items, is 14.2 cubic feet of space that because of thoughtful overall design offers incredible utility with plenty of neatly unobstructed space. Overall, the new Passat provides 96.3 cubic feet of passenger volume (versus 95 cu.ft. in today’s version).
As one expects of Volkswagens, the new Passat embodies the German engineering mandate of building ever higher and higher levels of advanced occupant protection with each new generation of car. The previous Passat was proven to be among the safest vehicles on the roads of America, regardless of vehicle class or weight. In the most important “real world” study of its type, the highly regarded Insurance Institute for Highway Safety studied data from serious accidents and measured those with the lowest death rates (see IIHS “Status Report, March,” 2005). Among all passenger vehicles, the Passat attained the third lowest death rate. The only “car” ranked higher was the Mercedes E. The only truck, the Toyota 4Runner.

The new 2006 Passat is now the newest example of this important Volkswagen reputation for safety, and brings true Autobahn-bred safety development and features to this family car segment by employing the most comprehensive standard list of advanced passive and active safety technology in its class. Safety is the tantamount function of all that is formed in the creation of a new Volkswagen, which is why the German automaker’s overriding philosophy is to bring the most sophisticated safety technology to the widest range of models when feasible.

Major standard safety items for the newest Volkswagen–many of which have been updated with the latest in technology but have been standard on Passats for several years—include eight total airbags, including front side thorax airbags, and Side Curtain Protection™ (head) in the front and rear.

A few of the most significant passive safety features now offer standard crash-active front headrests and crash-optimized foot pedals that descend upon serious impact. Daytime Running Lights (DRL), three-point safety belts, and adjustable headrests for all five occupants are also important holdover items to help in protection. And where details and precision positioning count the most, Volkswagen has made sure all outboard occupants are able to easily position their safety belts with shoulder height adjustments. Front belts use pre-tensioners with load limiters, and all safety belts use emergency locking retractors. Rear side thorax airbags are optional for the first time ever in a Passat, and if chosen, will supplement the standard head curtain protection system.

As expected in a Passat, active safety is also tantamount to the development of Volkswagens and the 2006 Passat is no exception and is arguably among the leaders in its segments in offering a list of performance items that can help avoid accidents in the first place, including the stability and surefootedness of a precise-handling front-drive sedan, with standard four-wheel disc ABS brakes that are coupled with a sophisticated Engine Braking Assist system. Another major technical advancement in the new Passat is a standard electro-mechanical power steering system that can help assist with straight-ahead driving adjustments when necessary—an example of this could be freeway driving through strong crosswinds. All Passats come standard with an Electronic Stabilization Program—an active safety item that is being recognized through independent research to be an increasing vital safety features—Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Electronic Differential Locking (EDL). Of course later in the year 2006, all wheel drive comes with 4Motion.

The new Passat employs an advanced version of the tried-and-true independent McPherson strut architecture. The car’s strut-type axle creates a very desirable direct steering ratio; a high level of transversal axle rigidity and a low tendency to allow body roll on tight turns. The Passat’s precise handling is only one attribute of this front suspension; this design also helps enhance its ride through the optimization of the springs, the separate mounting of springs and dampers, improved mounting points for the lower wishbones, and the use of twin-sleeve shock absorbers. This, of course, offers less noise during varied driving conditions and surfaces.

At the rear, the new Passat is now equipped with an advanced multi-link independent rear suspension. This feature promises to help the Passat set a new standard in its market segment by providing an ideal balance of sporty driving dynamics and ride sophistication. This fully independent four-link suspension, with coil springs, telescopic shocks and stabilizer bar, also allowed the designers and engineers to create more utilitarian space and practicality including great width in the luggage compartment.

Handling performance is honed to perfection by a new electro-mechanical power rack-and-pinion steering system that offers an extremely good “center feel” and contributes significantly to the new car’s confident-feeling stability. Unlike some similar systems found on luxury cars, the new Passat’s function varies the steering assist based on the speed of the car and other driving factors. This gives the Passat driver a desirable connected-to-the-road feel but also provides the added capability of active-return steering and straight-ahead driving correction assistance.

As expected, Volkswagen is backing the new Passat with a comprehensive warranty that includes a bumper-to-bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, with wear-and-tear items and adjustments covered during the initial 12 months or 12,000 miles. Additional coverage is provided by 24-hour roadside assistance for four years with unlimited mileage, a five year/60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty and a Limited Warranty against Corrosion Perforation for 12 years with unlimited mileage.

  • VW Passat Estate

The new VW Passat Estate is currently in pre-production, and its launch in Europe is imminent, with the first cars set to debut on August 19th at Volkswagen dealerships in Germany. Advance sales will begin on June 3rd, with prices starting from 22,900 euros, which includes standard features such as air conditioning system (Climatic), roof rails, electronic parking brake, and ESP.

The Passat Estate is among the most successful cars in the world, with over 4.3 million units produced to date. The latest generation has been designed with even more refined professional functionality and presented in an attractive package. Its VW design aims to create anticipation for the new Passat Estate and other exciting things to come in the current VW model lineup.

    Passat Estate design in detail

The Passat saloon’s design, launched earlier this year, has a distinctive, trendy, and progressive look. The chrome shield-shaped radiator grille is the brand’s new face, which highlights its uniqueness. While the front of the saloon and the estate appear similar, their dissimilarities are visible from the B-pillar. The side lines and rear part of the five-door vehicle reveal Volkswagen’s excellent design. The Passat Estate’s appearance is traditional yet unusual. Its design is a clear indication of a Passat, but it has a stronger and more emotional feel than its predecessor’s timeless elegance.

The car’s silhouette is robust, with the lower edge of the side windows slanting upwards towards the rear section and the top edge downwards. The “window line” gradually tapers from the B to the D-pillar, producing a “lighter,” “elongated,” and “sportier” impression. While the roofline has a subtle curve towards the back, it makes the roof side members more prominent below the roof rail and towards the D-pillar. A trim strip incorporated into the sill panels and the rear bumper element emphasize these “tapered” lines. The LED rear lights, with their distinct day and night design, and the pronounced haunches above the rear wheels, provide the design with a sense of presence.

    VW Passat Estate

The new Passat Estate boasts a bigger and more athletic appearance due to its unique silhouette design and powerful haunches, which add to its elegance. However, this modern appearance does not compromise the car’s luggage compartment capacity or suitability for daily use. Despite appearing lower and more dynamic than its predecessor, the new Passat Estate is actually 1.9 centimetres taller, measuring a total of 1.52 metres.

An overview of the dimensions of the new VW Passat Estate

The new Passat Estate boasts a spacious interior and exterior design. It is 4.77 meters long and 1.82 meters wide, which is 9.2 centimeters longer and 7.4 centimeters wider than its predecessor, providing more room for passengers. The luggage compartment can hold up to 603 liters when loaded to the cover and 1,731 liters when fully used, including the 90-liter spare wheel well. The fuel tank capacity has also been increased to 70 liters, and it can carry a maximum load of 638 kilograms.

A selection of the standard equipment available in the new VW Passat Estate

The new VW Passat Estate will be available in four equipment lines, namely Trendline, Comfortline, Sportline and Highline, similar to the saloon version. The base model, Trendline, comes equipped with standard features such as ESP, air conditioning system, six airbags, 16-inch wheels, central locking with remote control, electronic parking brake, electro-mechanical power steering, folding luggage compartment floor, asymmetric split folding rear seat bench, and black roof rails.

In addition to the features of Trendline, the Comfortline, Sportline and Highline models offer more chrome details, extended centre console with armrest, storage compartment, and rear plug socket, electric rear windows, and a 6-way electrically-adjustable driver seat. These three equipment lines also come with unique features such as folding passenger seat backrest in the Passat Estate Comfortline, sports suspension in the Sportline version, and chrome roof rail in the Highline version.

The new optional equipment for the Passat Estate

In addition to these features, the new VW Passat Estate also has a clever rear section with a low loading sill and an optional easy open function for the tailgate, which opens automatically when the driver “kicks” their foot under the rear bumper. The luggage compartment can also be equipped with an optional electrically deployable tow bar which swivels out from underneath the vehicle. This feature makes it easy to attach a trailer without having to bend down or dirty your hands.

The new VW Passat Estate engines

The Passat Estate will offer eight engine options, with only the entry-level engine (75kW/102 PS petrol engine) being carried over from the previous range. Four new petrol engines are available, all featuring homogeneous direct injection, with power outputs ranging from 85 kW/115 PS to 147 kW/200 PS. Additionally, a 3.2 litre V6 FSI engine with 184 kW/250 PS will be added to the range in the last quarter of 2005, and will come standard with 4MOTION four-wheel drive. The 150 and 200 PS versions of the Passat Estate can be recognized by twin tailpipes at the rear left, while the 250 PS version features a large tailpipe on both left and right sides.

For the first time, each of the three TDIs will be used in the Passat Estate series. The diesel engines will come in three different units, offering 77 kW/105 PS, 103 kW/140 PS, and 125 kW/170 PS. The most powerful TDI features a highly innovative piezo-operated high-pressure fuel injection system and comes standard with a diesel particulate filter. The filter will be an optional addition for the TDI engines with 105 and 140 PS.
