  • The 90 hp Mercedes Simplex, Camille Jenatzy and the 1903 Gordon Bennett Trophy

It was in 1901 that Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), the company founded in 1890, delivered the now legendary first 35 hp Mercedes to Emil Jellinek; designer Wilhelm Maybach then immediately set about turning his thoughts to the future. At the top of his list of priorities were a higher power output, greater operational convenience and increased reliability, which even in those days were hallmarks of Daimler vehicles. And so it came about that the engine of the Mercedes “Simplex” from 1902 already developed 40 hp (29 kW) and was easier to drive, as its name indicates. (more…)

  • Mercedes-Benz wedge-pin door lock

Daimler-Benz patented what was to become a key element of passive car safety in 1958 – the wedge-pin door lock. It was introduced into a Mercedes-Benz production vehicle the following year. The innovative lock, featuring two safety detents, prevented vehicle doors from bursting open or jamming shut in the event of an accident. • Modern-day classic puts in a compelling performance: G-class – the show goes on

It has been the definitive cross-country vehicle since 1979. It has won the Paris-Dakar Rally, is deemed a worthy means of transport for the Pope, ranks as an automotive design icon, is a serial winner of readers’ polls and constitutes the gene pool for a Mercedes-Benz SUV family that now numbers four model series in all. It is, of course – the G-Class. It has been in production for 29 years now, making the G-Class by far the longest-serving passenger car model series there has been since Mercedes-Benz came into existence in 1886. And its haul of superlatives is set to grow still further, because the G-Class is subject to continual updating that keeps it in touch with the very latest motoring technology. This time, once again, the exterior has only been modernised to a limited degree quite deliberately. The advances mainly centre on the vehicle’s telematics, along with the new 5.5-litre V8 engine that is available for the G 500. (more…)
