  • Mercedes-Benz Adds 2LOOK Edition To SL AMG Range

Mercedes-Benz-SL-AMG-2LOOK-Edition-THUMBMercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG and the SL 65 AMG are getting a 2LOOK Edition version, which shows-off sports- and dynamic style. The new editions feature a combination of exclusive interior and exterior equipment, which make the SL AMG even more exclusive. In addition, the luxury German company has announced that from this month the SL 63 AMG is equipped with an updated version of the V8 engine which delivers 585 hp (430 kW).

Some of the highlights here include a vario-roof, the cross-strut in the AMG front apron, exterior mirror housings, fins on the wings and bonnet, surrounds of the LED daytime running lamps, spoiler lip on the tail end and the diffuser insert in the AMG rear apron. They are all painted in high-gloss black.

At the back, the tailpipe trim elements of the AMG sports exhaust system include a black chrome-plated finish. The contrasting high-gloss chrome has been used for the twin louvre of the radiator grille and the AMG lettering.

The 2LOOK Edition will run on large 48.3 cm (19-inch) or 50.8 cm (20-inch) AMG 10-spoke forged wheels. They are painted in matt black and include a high-sheen finish, and the red-painted brake callipers.

Inside, the driver and passenger sit in AMG sports seats feature an embossed AMG emblem in the backrest. They are wrapped in exclusive Nappa leather carrying the AMG-specific diamond pattern. There is also a contrasting trim in designo platinum white pearl nappa leather.

The door centre panels also sport the AMG-specific diamond design. In addition, the designo leather in platinum white pearl adorns the side sections of the armrests, the doors and the centre armrest. This exclusive look is further highlighted by an AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather andAlcantara with a bezel in high-gloss black. The steering wheel also features white contrasting topstitching.

One of the most exciting news here is that from mid-June the SL 63 AMG will be driven by an engine output of 585 hp (430 kW) and 900 newton metres (664 lb-ft) of torque. This means that the current variant which produces 537 hp (395 kW) will be discontinued. The same will happen with the car with the AMG Performance package and 564 hp (415 kW). The SL 63 AMG will also get as a standard an AMG rear axle locking differential.

Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG and the SL 65 AMG 2LOOK Editions will be available at dealers from mid-June with a starting price of € 169,991 for the SL 63 and € 244,188 for the SL 65 variant.

  • All-new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG

Mercedes-Benz-AMG-SL-65-thumbSoon after the release of the new Mercedes-Benz SL, and the SL 63 AMG, comes the SL 65 AMG – lighter, faster, smarter and more economical than ever. Roadster wise, this one is the top of the top by AMG at this point.

The first thing, the company wants to brag about, is the “intelligent, weight-saving construction” – Not much different from the new standard SL, the SL 65 has an aluminum body. There are also bits and pieces of carbon fiber scattered around but one would have to look hard to them. The underside of the boot lid would be a good place to start. Many pieces of the front and rear suspension are also made up of aluminum. As an end result, the new AMG roadster weighs 170 kg less than its predecessor. Mind you, that still means a total unsprung weight of 1950 kg – a cosmic figure for today’s performance open tops. Nobody sounds worried though.

This could be due to the fact that, under the hood, the SL 65 hides a 6.0 liter biturbo V12 bomb. They used the same one in the previous SL? Well this one is better. 18 hp better to be exact. Thanks to the new, larger turbochargers, new manifolds and optimised flow wastegate ducts, there is a 630 hp figure awaiting for you in the spec list. Torque stands at 1000 Nm and thus the time from zero to a hundred is reduced to 4 seconds. Top speed remains 155 mph – bound not by the restrictions of the laws of physics but rather by road law.

It’s not all raw power though. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC is clever enough to increase the fuel economy of this top-of-the-range stallion. 7 long-ratio speeds will let the V12 do its thing at lower revs while a new fuel economy torque converter, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and the transmission-oil thermal management system further increase the efficiency. Also, because it’s so modern these days, the whole drivetran comes with an ECO start/stop system that will save you pennies, especially in urban environments.

The SL 65’s manners on the road will be greatly dependant on the AMG rear differential, the AMG brakes and the Active Body Control, which surprisingly has only two settings and not ten – “Sport” and “Comfort”. They are quite self explanatory really. Apply the former on track days and switch to the latter upon returning from track days.

For the interior, much inspiration was drawn by the AMG SLS which is the definitive product of the Daimler subsidiary. The list of options alone, is big enough to render the 170 kg loss rather useless but at least you can be picky. Price tags have not yet been issued but time is all we have, as the SL 65 AMG will hit the markets somewhere around the second half of this year. Until then, feel free to check out our gallery.

  • 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG

2012 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG THUMBThe new 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG is another masterpiece from Mercedes-AMG. This SL 63 AMG is available with a choice of two power outputs. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 ‘biturbo’ (twin-turbocharged) engine, which delivers 395 kW (537 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. If the AMG Performance package is specified, these figures are increased to 415 kW (564 hp) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft). The acceleration is from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.3 or 4.2 seconds and to 200 km/h in 12.9 or 12.6 seconds respectively. Top speed is electronically limited 250 km/h. With the  AMG Performance package on board it is raised to 300 km/h (likewise electronically limited). NEDC combined consumption comes in at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres for both power outputs – a full 4.2 litres or 30 percent lower than for the outgoing model.

Behind the low fuel consumption is the lightweight construction of the SL 63 AMG. The vehicle is based on a lightweight all-aluminium bodyshell similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car. The result is weight saving of around 110 kilograms. Moreover the components have been optimised in line with their specific purpose. For the cover, for instance, behind the tank, the engineers have used even lighter magnesium material in some cases. High-strength steel tubes are integrated into the A-pillars for safety reasons. The boot lid helps to further trim the weight: the inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite and is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms. Moreover, almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension components are made of aluminium. The reduction in unsprung masses enhances both agility and the response of the spring and damper components. The all-new SL 63 AMG is equipped with an improved version of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control as standard. As a result the car has exceptional sport characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping (“Sport”) or more comfort-oriented settings for a high level
of comfort on long journeys (“Comfort”).  In addition for greater agility and faster cornering speeds, the SL 63 AMG has fully revised elastokinematics. Furthermore, the model is equipped with the new, electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, which now has a constant and more direct ratio, and variable power assistance which adjusts in line with the suspension settings. Further standard equipment features 3‑stage ESP®, a speciality exclusive to AMG with “SPORT Handling” mode for particularly keen drivers, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include an AMG rear axle differential lock and AMG performance suspension.

More importantly the power transmission can be adapted to specific requirements. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual). To go furter into details, in “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active at all times and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is standing still. The engine and transmission are far more agile in “S”, “S+” and “M” mode. Here the stop/start function is deactivated. An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

When it comes to braking, the new model got the freshly developed AMG high-performance compound brake system features 390 x 36 mm compound discs with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and 360 x 26 mm integral discs with single-piston floating callipers at the rear. In addition, an electric parking brake is fitted as standard, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include red-painted callipers to denote the AMG Performance package. The SL 63 AMG sits on five-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, shod with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 19 rear tyres. There are also available of course, multi-spoke AMG forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 20 rear tyres.

The new SL 63 AMG has a dynamically distinctive AMG bodystyling. It features front apron with large air dams, AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps and a lower cross strut in silver chrome, new AMG radiator grille with a double louvre in silver chrome, the side sill panels and the “V8 BITURBO” logos on the vent grilles with fins in silver chrome, AMG spoiler lip, the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system, the diffuser-style rear apron with body-coloured insert.

The sixth-generation SL retains the space-saving, electrohydraulically retractable vario-roof. It enables the the SL to transformed itself into a roadster or a coupé, as the mood takes the driver and depending on the weather, in under 20 seconds. More importantly there are three versions of this roof to choose from: painted roof, glass roof or the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL.
