  • Mercedes-Benz B-Class

The new B-Class stands out clearly from the crowd. The unique sporty proportions, versatile interior, modern drive technologies and the latest generation of MBUX make the new Sports Tourer from Mercedes‑Benz ready for all the small as well as the big adventures of everyday life.

Progressive, confident exterior:At first glance, the updated front end catches the eye. The newly designed, optionally available LED headlamps, the sporty bumper and the radiator grille give the new B-Class a dynamic boost thanks to their smooth transition to the visually compact greenhouse. The Sports Tourer demonstrates its sporty aplomb with, among other things, externally flush-mounted wheels with four additional rim designs in dimensions of up to 19 inches, including optional high-gloss black painted light-alloy wheels in multi-spoke design and with a high-gloss rim flange for the AMG Line. But the rear view also conveys dynamism and power: the new, two-part rear lights now feature LED technology as standard and serve to reinforce the impression of breadth at the rear. They are supported by the aero spoilers attached to the side of the rear window, which improve aerodynamics. The new B-Class is available in ten different solid/metallic or special paint finishes.

Interior between high-tech and sportiness:The interior of the new B-Class is neatly practical and spacious. The driver-side cut-out is dominated by the dual-screen display (7-inch instrument cluster and 10.25-inch head unit), which is included as standard. In the optional variant with two 10.25-inch displays, a wide-screen look is created through which the element appears to float. The three round turbine-look air vents, so typical of Mercedes-Benz, are a homage to the world of aviation. The redesigned centre console conveys the high-tech aspirations of the new B-Class through its Black Panel look, while the new steering wheel from the latest steering wheel generation comes as standard in nappa leather. A heated steering wheel is also available as an option in the AMG equipment variant for the first time.

An attractive range of interior colours and materials allows a high degree of customisation. In the base variant, the seats have been upgraded even further with their three-dimensionally embossed ARTICO cover and the best ergonomic comfort. The “Progressive” equipment variant offers the exclusivity characteristic of Mercedes in the colours black, black/macchiato and the new black/sage grey. The seats in this case can also be upgraded to leather seats in black or bahia brown. The newly developed trim element with star pattern creates an exciting highlight in the interior. The AMG Line is the sportiest version of the new B-Class, with the black ARTICO/MICROCUT interior and red contrasting topstitching.

In its Ambition 2039, Mercedes-Benz has set itself the goal of launching a CO2-neutral fleet of new passenger cars and vans from 2039 across the entire value chain and life cycle. The aim is to at least halve CO2 emissions per passenger car in the new vehicle fleet over the entire life cycle compared to 2020 by the end of this decade. One measure is the use of recycled materials. For this reason, the composition of all materials to be used was also reconsidered in the design of the new B-Class and possibilities for more sustainable alternatives were examined. The comfort seats feature fabrics in the centre section that are made from 100 percent recycled material. In the case of ARTICO/MICROCUT seats, this proportion is 65 percent in the surface of the seat and 85 percent in the material underneath.

Significantly upgraded equipment:Mercedes-Benz has once again made the logic of the various equipment packages much clearer in order to simplify the time-consuming selection of many individual options. On the basis of actual buyer behaviour, functional features that are often bought together will therefore from now on be bundled together. Further functional options are available in addition. Where design options such as paint finish, upholstery, trim and wheels are concerned, customers can still configure their vehicles individually as before.

In concrete terms, this means that even the base version of the new B-Class has been significantly upgraded: A reversing camera, multimedia displays, the USB package and the steering wheel in nappa leather are included with immediate effect. From the Progressive equipment variant upwards, the base equipment includes LED headlamps, a seat with lumbar support, the Parking Package, the Mirror Package and the Easy Pack tailgate.

Infotainment & Assistance:The three display styles have been redesigned for the latest generation of MBUX in the B-Class: Classic provides all relevant driver information, Sporty impresses with a dynamic rev counter and Discreet has been pared back to show minimal content. Together with three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Services) and seven colour worlds, this creates a holistic and aesthetic experience that can be customised according to your wishes and situation. The central display offers all previous functions such as navigation, media, phone, vehicle, etc. and can be operated directly and conveniently as a touchscreen.

The telematics system has been revised and impresses with its new design and improved performance. Another new feature is the integration of a fingerprint sensor (expected to be available from 1st quarter of 2023) for the identification and authorisation of the driver. Of course, connectivity with smartphones via Apple Carplay or Android Auto Wireless is a given, while for further connectivity, another USB-C port has been added and the USB charging power increased once again.

The Hey Mercedes voice assistant is becoming even more capable of dialogue and learning in the new B‑Class. For example, certain actions can also be triggered without the activation term “Hey Mercedes”. The MBUX voice assistant can also explain and assist with vehicle functions, for example when looking for the first-aid kit or connecting the smartphone to the vehicle.

The new audio travel guide “Tourguide”, part of the “MBUX Voice Assistant” from Mercedes me[1], makes the previous travel information functions even more interesting and entertaining. Initially available exclusively in Germany, the MBUX infotainment system reads out extensive information about points of interest along the driving route in response to the voice command “Hey Mercedes, start Tourguide” and reacts to the approximately 3400 brown tourist information signs along German motorways, among other things.

The new B-Class has also been given an update in terms of safety assistance. With the upgrade of the Driver Assistance Package, for example, the control of the Lane Keeping Assist is much more comfortable by using the Active Steering Control. The optional Trailer Manoeuvring Assist automatically regulates the steering angle on the towing vehicle, making reverse manoeuvring with the new B-Class a more assured and relaxed process.

Electrified drives throughout:The petrol engine range of the new B-Class has also been updated and consistently electrified. With an additional 48-volt on-board power supply and a power increase of 10 kW, the starting functions in particular are supported. For customers of the new B-Class, the belt-driven starter-generator (RSG) also noticeably improves comfort: it reduces noises and vibrations during starting procedures compared to conventional starters and allows ‘sailing’ with the combustion engine switched off during steady cruising. In addition, the RSG recuperates during braking processes and thus feeds the 12-volt on-board network as well as the 48-volt battery. The energy thus generated can be used during acceleration processes to support the combustion engine.

Plug-in hybrid with added power:The plug-in hybrids of the new B-Class (Mercedes-Benz B 250 e, fuel consumption combined, weighted (WLTP) 1.2-0.9 l/100 km, electricity consumption combined, weighted (WLTP) 17.4-15.4 kWh/100km, CO2 emissions combined, weighted (WLTP) 27-20g/km)[2]. benefit from a further improved high-voltage battery. The charging process has also been optimised: in addition to the 3.7 kW standard, the improved battery can now also be charged with alternating current and up to 11 kW, instead of only 7.4 kW as before. In addition, customers still have the option of charging the battery with direct current and up to 22 kW. A DC charge from 10% to 80% takes about 25 minutes – a simple and uncomplicated charging experience, especially in day-to-day life. The electric motor in the new B-Class has also been revised and achieves 80 kW of power after the update – an increase of 5 kW.

Through the differentiated evaluation of the various driving phases, the ECO Score 3.0, newly introduced for some engines, also motivates the driver to drive in a more fuel-efficient way.

  • Carlsson Personalises Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Carlsson-Mercedes-Benz-B-Class-THUMBCarlsson Mercedes-Benz B-Class is not an ordinary vehicle. In fact, it is a true masterpiece due to the work of the tuning specialists at Carlsson. In this project were used head turning aerodynamic styling additions and alloy wheels, which were supported by upgraded suspension and performance kits. The result is 42 horsepower (31 kW) more.

To go further into details, the kit for this Mercedes-Benz model includes a front spoiler which contributes to car’s more dynamic face. At the same time this kit improves the high-speed stability.

In addition, there are more sculpted side sills which make easy the airflow along the cars flanks and then lead to the new rear apron. The latter now has an integrated diffuser flanked by cut-outs for two pairs of rear exhaust outlets. There is also added a new and larger roof spoiler which helps reduce the drag and lift at speed.

Furthermore, the professionals at Carlsson have also added lowering springs. They drop the ride height by 35 mm. This means that now the handling and grip are enhanced as well as the car exudes more purposeful stance.

And in order to complete the masterful visual appearance of the car, Carlsson’s 1/10 design alloy wheels were used. They are available in Titanium, Diamond and Graphite Editions in 18, 19 or 20-inch sizes, properly matched with 225/40 R18, 225/35 R19 and 235/30 R20 tyres from Dunlop or Vredestein.

What is more, a racier exterior can be achieved via Carlsson’s C-tronic CB kits, designed to increase output of the B-Class four-cylinder petrol engines. The effect is increase of B-Class’ output. The B250 horsepower rise from 211 hp (155 kW) to 253 hp (186 kW), while those of B200 go from 156 hp (115 kW) to 187 hp (138 kW), B180 achieves 146 hp (107 kW) from 122 hp (90 kW).

The interior of the vehicle has been also upgraded thanks to the new carpet mats, alloy pedal set and door pins, bespoke leather upholstery and wood or carbon-fibre trim.

Carlsson Mercedes-Benz B-Class as well as other vehicle tuned by the company can be seen at this year’s 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

  • 2012 Paris Motor Show: Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive Concept

Local emission-free electric vehicles are a key element of the Mercedes-Benz strategy for sustainable mobility. The advances that the Stuttgart-based premium manufacturer has achieved in this field are demonstrated by electric passenger cars which are already being manufactured under series production conditions and demonstrating high everyday practicality today. Such vehicles include the B-Class F-CELL, the Vito E-CELL van and the smart fortwo electric drive. This broad product portfolio will be bolstered in 2014 by the addition of the battery-powered electric variant of the B-Class.

“In developing our electric vehicles we accord top priority to customer benefits,” says Professor Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management at Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Accordingly, the Concept B-Class Electric Drive demonstrates premium-standard electric mobility for all the family. The concept vehicle offers outstanding everyday practicality and great driving enjoyment.”

Powerful acceleration and an effortlessly enjoyable driving experience

The near-series concept vehicle provides a glimpse of what the near future holds. Quiet and local emission-free drive power is provided by a 100 kW electric motor. Typically for an electric drive, the maximum torque of 310 Newton metres is available right from the first tap on the accelerator pedal – corresponding on a theoretical level roughly to the torque delivery of a state-of-the-art petrol engine with a displacement of three litres. This results in unusually powerful acceleration from a standing start. For the standard sprint from 0 to 100 km/h the electric-powered B-Class requires less than ten seconds. This adds up to superlative performance and all the joys of highly dynamic driving in every situation.

At a top speed limited to 150 km/h, the capacity of the highly efficient lithium-ion battery ensures a range of 200 local emission-free kilometres. This means that in addition to urban driving and short-range trips, longer journeys can also be mastered without any problems – such as the distances covered on a daily basis by commuters, for example. The Concept B-Class Electric Drive’s battery can be recharged at any standard domestic 230 V power outlet. A rapid charging function is also integrated which enables sufficient energy for 100 km to be charged in under an hour.

While the car is on the move, the electric drive itself contributes to a favourable energy balance by transforming kinetic energy into electric current in deceleration mode and during braking and feeding this energy into the battery (recuperation).

    Elegant and sporty lines

The powerful lithium-ion battery on board the Concept B-Class Electric Drive is accommodated safely and compactly in the so-called “ENERGY SPACE” under the rear part of the vehicle. This intelligent space concept ensures that the five-seater retains its familiar generously sized interior and boot.

In terms of appearance, the Concept B-Class Electric Drive showcar differs to series production B-Class models in a number of details. These include first and foremost a striking front bumper and new side skirts which flow elegantly into both the front bumper and the newly designed rear bumper. The charging unit is installed inconspicuously behind the filler flap. A special reflective blue colour effect on the exterior highlights the Concept B-Class Electric Drive’s status as a local emission-free electric vehicle.

    High-end comfort: exclusive interior

The range of instruments has been extended to cover functions specific to an electric vehicle. The round dial on the right incorporates a power display which is immediately and intuitively comprehensible, for example: the pointer rises when power is being consumed and drops below the zero line when the vehicle is feeding recuperative energy back into the battery. The instrumentation has been designed according to the motto “keep it clean”, i.e. avoiding any unnecessary electronic gadgets which might distract the driver unnecessarily from the traffic.

Soft nappa is predominant inside the vehicle, covering steering wheel, seats, door centre panels, armrests and the dashboard, which is bordered with carefully applied decorative turquoise blue stitching. The passenger compartment is finished in black, white and crystal grey. The perforated seat centre panels and armrests are in keeping with the showcar’s sporty, agile character. Special highlights are provided by fine piping in black, white and turquoise which provides a border for the light seat surfaces. The head restraints additionally sport an embroidered Electric Drive logo.

    Connected services

Cutting-edge technology ensures that the Concept B-Class Electric Drive is not only sustainable, but also fully networked and online. Remote checking and remote configuration of the vehicle is possible via the so-called Vehicle Homepage. The driver can access their vehicle on the internet, using their PC or smartphone. In this way, it is possible to check the current charge status of the lithium-ion battery or to verify the vehicle’s current range on a map. The planned route can also be displayed, showing directly whether and where the vehicle can be recharged along the way. The range of connected services is rounded off by a pre-entry climate control option offering individual timing. A further feature is smart charging. This involves the customer selecting a desired time for the beginning of his journey. The system then ensures that the battery is fully charged in time, taking economical and ecological considerations duly into account by using the most cost-effective or CO2-optimised charging times.

  • Brabus B-class project

2012-Brabus-B-Class-thumbThere’s a new Brabus exterior program for the new Mercedes B-Class. All alterations made on the body are not only visual but purposeful as well – aerodynamic enhancements thanks to the OEM quality high-grade Pur-R-Rim plastic components.

The Brabus provided front spoiler is an attachment for the standard bumper and deals with the prevention of front axle lift. There’s also an attachment for the rear fascia which has been thoughtfully cut out in order to house the Brabus quad sport exhaust system.

There’s a lot to choose when it comes to wheels. The B-Class can come with 8.5Jx19 Monoblock E, F, Q and S versions. In the gallery provided, the car actually uses two different pairs of wheels on each side – Monoblock F, cross-spoke wheels on the right and Monoblock Q, five double-spoke ones on the left. The best tires one can wrap around those wheels are in sizes 225/35 R 19 at the front and 255/30 R 19 at the rear axle.

Brabus have also introduced new springs to the suspension which are specifically designed to work with the standards dampers, yet the ride height is reduced by 30 mm.

Power tweaks for all versions of the B-Class come from the already applied Brabus sport rear muffler with four chrome-plated tailpipes. The Brabus ECO PowerXtra performance kits for the direct-injection gasoline and diesel engines are in the final stages of development.

Bi-color stainless-steel scuff plates with Brabus logos on them and aluminum door lock pins and pedal pads add to the exclusivity inside. Also the upholstery is akin to a that in a lounge. Upon request a multimedia equipment can also be fitted which comes with an iPad

  • 2012 Mercedes-Benz B 180 certified with less CO2 emissions

MBB thumbThe new Mercedes Benz B 180 has just received the Environmental Certificate, because ir produces 16 percent less CO2 emissions than the prvious one. The high level of environmental compatibility however can be seen even beyond the reductions in fuel consumption. To be more precise Mercedes-Benz analyses the environmental compatibility of its models according to their entire life cycle. This cycle embraces not only the production of the vehicle but also includes their long years of service and eventually adds the recycling at the end of their lives. But this wasn’t the only vehicle produced by the luxury brand, which has received the forespoken certificate. Additionally nine other model series were awarded with the Environmental Certificate.

But let us revew the entire life cycle of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Starting with the production, through service of over 160,000 kilometres and ending with the recycling – the new model B 180 causes 16 percent less CO2 emissions than its predecessor. The primary energy consumption over the vehicle’s entire life cycle is cut by 14 percent, of couse this is in comparison to the precious version of the car. For instance, the fuel consumption of the B 180 BlueEFFICIENCY petrol model with dual clutch transmission ranges from 5.9 to 6.2 l/100 km. To make it clearer the last version of the B 180 had a fuel consumption of 7.3 to 7.5 l/100 km. Therefore this means that there is substantial reduction in fuel consumption of up to 19 percent! These savings are due to an intelligent package of measures, namely – the BlueEFFICIENCY technologies. They include optimisation measures in the area of the powertrain, energy management, aerodynamics, tyres optimised for minimum rolling resistance, weight reduction through lightweight construction and driver information to encourage an energy-saving style of driving.

    2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class
    2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Moreover the new B-Class already meets the recycling rate of 95 percent by weight. To be more precise the B-Class includes 75 components representing a total weight of 39 kilograms which can be produced with the partial use of high-quality recycled plastics, thus resulting in 13 percent increase in the weight of approved recycled components. For example, the typical areas of use are wheel arch linings, cable ducts and underbody panels, which consist for the most part of polypropylene. In addition to that there is also an increased emphasis on closed automobile materials cycles. For instance, a recyclate is used for the front wheel arch linings, which is produced from refabricated vehicle components such as starter battery housings, bumper panels from the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System (MeRSy) and production waste from cockpit units. Furthermore, 21 components in the B-Class weight 20 kilograms. They
are produced using natural materials, which marks an increase of 29 percent. And to go further into detaisl these natural materials consist primarily of coconut and wood fibres and honeycomb cardboard in combination with various polymer materials. Next, the modular body-in-white concept is a sign that the B-Class is constructed to accommodate versions with an alternative drive. For example, the appropriate interfaces in the body shell enable the main floor panel to be modified and a step to be
produced for the “ENERGY SPACE” on the versions with alternative drive. At last the underfloor compartment covers part of the area under the rear bench seat, thus offering space for alternative energy accumulators.

  • 2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Substantially more agile and efficient, but as comfortable and spacious as ever – the new B-Class from Mercedes-Benz is a winner on all fronts. The vehicle’s lower height and more upright seat position provide for a first impression that hints at the compact sports tourer’s dynamic credentials.

With a new four-cylinder petrol engine featuring direct injection and turbocharging, a new diesel engine, a new dual clutch transmission, a new manual transmission and new assistance systems, the front-wheel-drive car also rings in a new technological era for compact cars from Mercedes-Benz. “No model change in the history of Mercedes-Benz has ever seen so many new developments introduced in one fell swoop,” stresses Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Development, Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Future B-Class customers will benefit from this quantum leap in terms of higher fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions combined with driving pleasure, plenty of space and the highest standard of safety that has ever been available in this class.”

The world premiere of the new B-Class (length/width/height: 4359/1786/1557 millimetres) will take place at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (13 to 25 September 2011). It will be making its way to the UK in March 2012 .

The exterior design: perfect space in a most attractive guise

The new B-Class is a typical Mercedes sports tourer, offering plenty of space combined with impressive dynamic performance as a hatchback saloon. The character lines of the exterior design indicate both of these attributes: the front and rear feature width-emphasizing design, with a wide, prominent grille and headlamps extending along the sides at the front while the rear end features a wide rear window, two-piece tail lights and a large tailgate with low loading sill.

The new sporty lines and the outstanding aerodynamics are particularly evident in the side line: the bonnet flows seamlessly into the A-pillar and the roof line descends sleekly to the striking roof spoiler. The roof features a contoured line which lends the vehicle a longer appearance. The pronounced wheel arches offset by dynamic feature lines under the beltline are a sporty interpretation of the current design line from Mercedes-Benz. The bottom edge of the body features dynamic side skirts which add a light touch to the vehicle’s appearance. Refined details such as the exquisitely designed headlamps with the new spotlight element confirm the brand’s unmistakable premium credentials which shine through in the compact segment, too.

    2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class
    2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class

    Outstanding aerodynamics: astounding cd value

An outstanding drag coefficient of cd = 0.26 places the new B-Class at the forefront of its market segment. As well as the aerodynamic exterior design, numerous optimisation measures on points of detail such as the air flow around the front wheels, the underbody design and the cooling air flow are also crucial contributory factors to this excellent aerodynamic performance. Patents are pending for innovative details such as the serrated wheel arch spoiler.

New concept: lower overall height but more space inside

The new vehicle concept underscores the dynamic aspirations of the new B-Class. The most striking aspect is the reduced height: at 1557 millimetres, the new model crouches almost five centimetres lower on the road than its predecessor. The seat height in relation to the road has also been reduced (minus 86 mm) in order to facilitate getting in and out of the car easily, while maintaining a clear overview of the vehicle’s contours when driving.

In response to requests from many customers, the sitting position is more upright, however. At the same time, the headroom has been further improved. With maximum headroom of 1047 mm at the front (without sliding roof), the B-Class is among the most spacious cars in its segment in this discipline, too. The ergonomically expedient more upright sitting position in combination with a lowering of the vehicle’s floor at the rear leads to a segment-leading degree of legroom (976 mm) which even surpasses that of the S- and E-Class.

The B-Class is optionally available with the EASY-VARIO-PLUS system. This enables simple reorganisation of the interior so as to enable the transportation of bulky items. Features of the EASY-VARIO-PLUS system include fore/aft adjustment of the rear seats by up to 140 millimetres (thereby increasing the luggage compartment volume from 488 to 666 litres) and a front passenger seat whose backrest can be folded forward onto the seat cushion.

The interior design: superior quality in a new dimension

High-quality materials and finely structured surfaces, stylish details, precision workmanship and a new spaciousness – the interior of the B-Class defines a whole new benchmark in the compact segment.

Many features have been the reserve of higher classes of vehicle to date and embody Mercedes-Benz‘s special definition of quality and aesthetics. The dashboard is optionally available in ARTICO man-made leather finish and features stitching, for example. Four equipment packages (Chrome, Sports, Exclusive and Night package) enable individualisation according to personal tastes.

On the inside the large, three-dimensional trim covering the entire dashboard first strikes the eye. It is available in four variants, covering a broad spectrum from modern through sporty to classic. Common to all versions is a high-class appeal combining an attractive look and feel with easy care and durability.

    2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Interior
    2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Interior

The three large round vents in the middle and their uniquely designed cruciform nozzles add a sporty attribute to the interior’s emotional design idiom. The display, which is available in two sizes (5.8- and 7-inch) appears to hover over the vents. With its stylish design – the trim frame with galvanised finish contrasting with the piano black of the front panel – and slender lines, the colour display (TFT) is a highly attractive feature in the cockpit.

The 3-spoke leather trimmed steering wheel, which always incorporates a silver chrome insert in the middle spoke, the instrument cluster with four analogue round dials and suspended pointers in the 6 o’clock position and the seats with contrasting stitching underscore the sporty character.

The drive: designed for maximum efficiency

The new B-Class features new petrol and diesel engines as well as new manual and automatic transmissions. All transmissions and engines have been developed in-house, with production taking place at the plants in Stuttgart-Unterturkheim and -Hedelfingen, Rastatt/Baden, Gaggenau/Baden and Kolleda/Thuringia. The simultaneous development process enabled perfect coordination of engines and transmissions, e.g. with regard to implementation of the ECO start/stop function which features as standard on all B-Class models.

Common features of the new drive systems are the use of state-of-the-art technologies for maximum efficiency, very smooth running, high tractive power right from low revs, sustainability in terms of impending emissions standards and low weight. For the purposes of transverse installation the engines, all of which are turbocharged, and the two transmissions are very compactly designed, providing the B-Class with an exemplary small turning circle for a front-wheel drive vehicle of eleven metres. The engine and transmission suspension consists of a four-point mounting system comprising engine mount, transmission mount and two self-aligning supports. This suspension system has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of the high-torque engines with regard to minimum noise levels.  The hydraulic damping integrated in the transmission mount is a key contributory factor to the exceptionally high ride comfort.

The new four-cylinder petrol engines (internal designation M270) mark the launch of a completely new engine series. The combustion process is based on the third-generation Mercedes-Benz direct injection system which was introduced last year with the BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engines. Its use in the B-Class marks this technology’s debut in the compact segment. The new four-cylinder engines have been designed for both transverse and longitudinal installation. In the new B-Class they are initially available with a displacement of 1.6 litres, as the B 180 rated at 122 hp and the B 200 with an output of 156 hp. Their maximum torque of 200 and 250 Nm respectively is available from an engine speed of 1250 rpm.

The new four-cylinder diesel engine is a further development of the OM651 deployed in the C- to the S-Class, a common rail direct-injection engine of the third generation. With its displacement scaled down to 1.8 litres and numerous optimised points of detail, this is the first time that the compression-ignition engine has been mounted transversely in a Mercedes-Benz car. The B 180 CDI generates 109 hp of power, while the B 200 CDI has an output of 136 hp. The maximum torque stands at 250 Nm from 1400 rpm for the 80 kW variant and 300 Nm from 1600 rpm for the 100 kW variant.

Another Mercedes-Benz premiere is the new 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission in the B-Class. This transmission is extremely compact, extremely variable with regard to adaptation of the engine speed thanks to seven gears, features an electric oil pump for start/stop capability, shifts gear without any interruptions in tractive power and combines the comfort of an automatic with the efficiency of a manual transmission.

The new 6-speed manual transmission designed along similarly compact lines as a three-shaft transmission is a close relative of the DCT. Extremely easy gear shifting, low shift forces, low internal friction and a low weight are among its most important characteristics.

The chassis and suspension: refined sportiness now for the sports tourer, too

“Fantastically agile” is the assessment of all test drivers who have put the new B-Class through its paces to date. Three factors are instrumental to the substantially enhanced dynamic performance in comparison to its predecessor, which does not come at the cost of any compromises on comfort: the lowered centre of gravity, the new four-link rear axle and the upgraded ESP®Electronic Stability Programme. A sports suspension is optionally available for further enhanced agility. The centre of gravity has been lowered by a further 20 mm and the suspension additionally features sports dampers with amplitude-selective damping and a Direct-Steer system will be standard on the Sport model line.

    Steering: mechanical with electric assistance

The electromechanical steering of the B-Class has been redesigned. The electric motor of the servo assistance system is now located directly on the steering gear as a dual pinion EPS system, thereby optimising the package as a whole. The steering ratio becomes noticeably more direct at greater steering angles, enhancing the vehicle’s handling and agility substantially. The electromechanical steering system makes an important contribution to the vehicle’s overall efficiency, as the steering assist function only requires energy when steering actually takes place.

New assistance and braking system reduces the risk of rear-end collisions

As a world first in the compact segment, the B-Class features a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist as standard, which lowers the risk of rear-end collisions. The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system outputs a visual and acoustic warning to alert a possibly distracted driver to identified obstacles, and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise possible braking response. This is initiated as soon as the driver emphatically operates the brake pedal.

In contrast to systems currently on the market in the compact class, the new COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST brake assist feature is not merely a system intended to minimise minor damage in urban traffic. Rather, this innovative solution is aimed at protecting motorists from typical rear-end collisions in dangerous traffic situations. Mercedes-Benz expects the new safety system to have a significant positive effect on accident statistics.

The area of safety also encompasses an array of other assistance systems which have been adopted into the B-Class from the larger model series. These include:

    • Adaptive Headlamp Assist
    • Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist
    • ATTENTION ASSIST (standard)
    • Speed Limit Assist (speed limit sign recognition)
    • Active Parking Assist(standard)
    • Brake HOLD function (standard with 7G-DCT)
    • Hill Hold function (standard)
    • LINGUATRONIC
    • Reversing camera
    • DISTRONIC PLUS

Premiere in the compact class: PRE-SAFE® available for the first time

The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system which features in the B-Class is available for the first time in this vehicle category.  This represents a further step in the ongoing implementation of this innovation, which was premiered in the S-Class in 2002. Core features of PRE-SAFE® are reversible belt tensioning, the closing of side windows and sliding sunroof in case of critical lateral dynamics and adjustment of the fully electric front passenger seat with memory function to an ideal position for maximum effectiveness of the restraint systems. PRE-SAFE® is always activated in response to critical longitudinal and lateral dynamics and may also be triggered upon intervention by certain assistance functions.

he scope of restraint facilities takes special account of the B-Class’ use as a family car. Great importance has been attached to the safety of the rear occupants. Belt tensioners, belt-force limiters and belt height adjusters come as standard on the outer seats. Rear sidebags are optionally available. Integrated child seats and automatic child seat recognition are available as in the predecessor. Driver and co-driver are provided with new pelvis bags which are able to cover the pelvis and the entire upper part of the body. For head protection, a windowbag is fitted as standard.

COMAND Online multimedia system with internet access

Internet access, the convenient LINGUATRONIC voice control system, two navigation solutions tailored to different budgets, connection for mobile audio devices and an intuitive operating concept – the information and communication systems in the B-Class offers excellent user-friendliness and a superior level of functionality which has been the reserve of higher categories of vehicle to date. It is the new multimedia generation from Mercedes-Benz which delivers these standards. The operating concept featuring the turn/push control in front of the armrest and the control knob on the head unit is also familiar from other Mercedes model series.

The COMAND Online multimedia system offers internet access. Customers can either surf the web as they wish while the car is stationary or call up a Mercedes-Benz app whose particularly fast page loading and simple operation make it suitable for use while driving. Integrated apps include Google™ Local Search and Weather, and the facility for downloading a route which has previously been configured on a PC using Google Maps and transmitted to the car.

All set for the future: modular “Energy Space” concept

The modular “Energy Space” concept means that the new B-Class is already designed to accommodate versions with an alternative drive: appropriate interfaces in the body shell enable the main floor panel to be modified and a step to be produced for the versions with alternative drive. An underfloor compartment covering part of the area under the rear bench seat offers space for alternative energy accumulators.
