  • Mercedes-Benz Teases New AMG GT

Mercedes-Benz-AMG-GT-THUMBMercedes-Benz AMG GT sports car is to thrill us this autumn when it is set to make its world premiere. The brand new vehicle will feature breath-taking design and supreme agility –qualities typacially found on the AMG GT. Furthermore, form Mercedes-Benz announced that the car is destined for a new segment. We don’t have any visuals of the exterior yet, but the company has released two images of the exclusive interior, which is adorned by red and black leather, carbon fiber and a range of new technologies.

The designers have put mainly their attention on the driving dynamics, agility and sportiness of the car. In fact, the new GT is the second sports car developed fully independently by Mercedes-AMG.

The sneak preview of the interior provides a good impression of what we are to expect. Inside, car’s design embodies emotion and sensuality. The uncompromising lines of the interior components define the concept of “modern luxury”.

The biggest impression however, makes the stylistic development of the central “aviation design” theme. The dashboard is wide and creates impression of a powerful wing. This design treatment is supported by the four central spotlight-style vents and the individual vents at the left and right ends of the dashboard.

The dominant centre console has a shape reminiscent of a NACA air intake and the employed materials suggest that it has been adopted directly from motor racing. The controls on the AMG DRIVE UNIT are arranged like eight cylinders in a V layout. All in all, the finest materials and outstanding workmanship contribute to the typical Mercedes luxury.

  • Loewenstein Impress With LM63-700 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

Loewenstein-LM63-700-Mercedes-Benz-C63-AMG-shadowLoewenstein-LM63-700-Mercedes-Benz-C63-AMG-mediumIt’s not easy making a break in the aftermarket niche. It takes time and determination to build a good image. Only then will the majority of people will feel secure in handing in the keys to their prised stock-mobiles.

All that being said, we would like to wish good luck to the young, up-and-coming tuner house from Germany, Loewenstein Manufaktur. Here’s their latest creation which started off a as Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

“457 hp”, they must have said, “not nearly good enough.”

Thus, we open the hood and find a Magnuson-Roots displacement compressor and a big intercooler. Both installed and deinstalled as easy as one, two, three. Plug a few cables in and you have yourself a 702 hp 6.2-liter V8 plant with 883 NM of torque itching to destroy the rear tires. It won’t though. “The engine capacity does not descend “uncontrolled” on the rear wheels, but unleashes rather more elegantly and comfortably thanks to a continuous and flat torque curve”. They say. If you, nevertheless, feel that the power is way too overwhelming, there’s an optional on/off button available that goes right on the center console.

Loewenstein have also provided their own prototype coilover kit and the fine tuning has been made with the help of ZF Sachs. For that extra something, there’s also an automatic limited slip differential available. An in-house high-performance braking system, on the other hand, gives you all the stopping power you need: 8-piston calipers and 380-mm disks at the front; and 4-piston calipers and 356-mm disks at the back.

    Visual treats:

Matt carbon external mirros, front spoiler back diffuser compile, what Loewenstein call, the “carbon-fiber exterior program”. At the back you also see the company’s own exhaust pipes peaking out – part of a system that employes an exhaust manifold with substitute primary catalytic converter pipes as well as a Loewenstein performance module.

Wheel choice varies between the 1-piece “Klassik” rims in sizes 8.5×19 and 9.5×19 with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires in dimensions 235/35ZR19 and 265/30ZR19; and the 20-inch multi-piece “Rennsport” rims in sizes 8.5- and 10.5-inch. They wear even lower and wider Michelin Pilot Super Sports (front: 235/30ZR20, rear: 285/25/ZR20).

Inside, one finds a bi-color theme on the predominantly leather/Alcantara interior. There’s also aluminum for the pedals and carbon/aramid for the decorative strips here and there.

All in all, a very decent start for the guys Lowewenstein – a project that has surely gotten people talking.

  • Most Powerful 4-Cylinder Engine with Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG Concept

    Mercedes-Benz-GLA-45-AMG-shadowMercedes-Benz-GLA-45-AMG-medium

Compact SUV – an oxymoron by itself, yet hugely popular among car manufacturers and, by extension, people. Mercedes-Benz are now aiming at young people “who set great store by styling, dynamism and independence”. I guess that explains the thing we have here – the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG Concept.

We are talking small, at least by AMG standards. The “high-performance SUV” brandishes a straight four, 2.0-liter gasoline engine. But because it’s turbocharged and cleverly managed, it has a total output of 360 hp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. So the “most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world” will be channelling its force through AMG’s SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed transmission and Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Quotated acceleration from 0 to 62 mph stands at just under five seconds. For stopping power, refer to the AMG’s performance braking system which, most importantly, brandishes red calipers.

More exterior flare involves the GLA’s AMG cross-spoked forged wheels painted in matt black with a red flange. One size fits all: 255/35 R21 tires. The splitter at the lower front end sticks out from the apron with its high-gloss black finish. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s also a giant number “45” on each side and a “distinctive AMG logo at the upper edge of the windscreen. Further design elements exclusive to AMG include the “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver chrome, the side sill panels with high-gloss black inserts, the “TURBO AMG” lettering on the front wings, the high-gloss black roof rails and the large rear aerofoil. Then there are sporty silver lines running through the whole body complemented by red highlights on the radiator grille, exterior mirrors, diffuser insert and AMG rear aerofoil. At the back, a big diffuser dominates the view alongside a twin-tailpipe in high-gloss black – part of AMG’s sports exhaust system.

  • Mercedes-Benz Unveils AMG Vision Gran Turismo

Mercedes-Benz-AMG-Vision-Gran-Turismo-THUMBMercedes-Benz designers have created a visionary concept of a super sports car for the new PlayStation 3 racing game Gran Turismo 6. The car is named Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo and it features extreme proportions, sensual contours and intelligently high technologies.

In addition, its breathtaking visual appearance perfectly complements its breathtaking performance of 585 hp (430 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. The futuristic model will make its world debut on 19 November 2013 at the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Research & Development Center in Sunnyvale, California.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo sports extreme proportions and variable LED radiator grille. In other words, the sports car proportions that are a typical Mercedes feature have been reinterpreted. To be more precise, the long bonnet has a flowing transition into a compact greenhouse offset to the rear.

There the rear end is made with broad shoulder contours. The dynamism of the vehicle is highlighted by an extended, dramatic side contour and a pronounced bulge to the wheel arches, which blend into the low-slung, muscular bodyshell.

The headlamps have angled form and thanks to their color scheme, the car receives even more determined look. The aggressive and sporty impression is additionally reinforced by the bonnet with its expressive forms and motorsport details, such as the release catches on the bonnet and the fuel cap.

Red-glowing contour lines are positioned on the lower part of the vehicle. They create a contrast to the silver-painted bodywork. Another eye-catching feature is the radiator grille, which has a shape reminiscent of the legendary 300 SL racing car of 1952. Variable LED grille with different light patterns is a further development of the diamond grille introduced with the new A-Class.

The interior of the car is inspired by the Formula 1 cockpit. It includes red integral sports seats, black flooring of the footwell, dashboard in the form of two gullwing doors which are positioned on each side of the steering column. As a result the actual doors themselves appear to be an extension of the instrument panel.

More importantly, Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo is equipped with AMG V8 biturbo engine that develops 585 hp and a maximum torque of 800 Nm. The entire car is made of an aluminium space frame body and components in carbon fibre, which contributes towards the weigh of the car that is only 1385 kilograms.

The excellent deceleration values and fade resistance at the highest level are ensured by the AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system. On the other hand, the AMG sports exhaust system with eight tailpipes is positioned at the rear end and deliver a powerful accompaniment whenever the car accelerates.

  • All-new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG

Mercedes-Benz-AMG-SL-65-thumbSoon after the release of the new Mercedes-Benz SL, and the SL 63 AMG, comes the SL 65 AMG – lighter, faster, smarter and more economical than ever. Roadster wise, this one is the top of the top by AMG at this point.

The first thing, the company wants to brag about, is the “intelligent, weight-saving construction” – Not much different from the new standard SL, the SL 65 has an aluminum body. There are also bits and pieces of carbon fiber scattered around but one would have to look hard to them. The underside of the boot lid would be a good place to start. Many pieces of the front and rear suspension are also made up of aluminum. As an end result, the new AMG roadster weighs 170 kg less than its predecessor. Mind you, that still means a total unsprung weight of 1950 kg – a cosmic figure for today’s performance open tops. Nobody sounds worried though.

This could be due to the fact that, under the hood, the SL 65 hides a 6.0 liter biturbo V12 bomb. They used the same one in the previous SL? Well this one is better. 18 hp better to be exact. Thanks to the new, larger turbochargers, new manifolds and optimised flow wastegate ducts, there is a 630 hp figure awaiting for you in the spec list. Torque stands at 1000 Nm and thus the time from zero to a hundred is reduced to 4 seconds. Top speed remains 155 mph – bound not by the restrictions of the laws of physics but rather by road law.

    Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65
    Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65

It’s not all raw power though. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC is clever enough to increase the fuel economy of this top-of-the-range stallion. 7 long-ratio speeds will let the V12 do its thing at lower revs while a new fuel economy torque converter, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and the transmission-oil thermal management system further increase the efficiency. Also, because it’s so modern these days, the whole drivetran comes with an ECO start/stop system that will save you pennies, especially in urban environments.

The SL 65’s manners on the road will be greatly dependant on the AMG rear differential, the AMG brakes and the Active Body Control, which surprisingly has only two settings and not ten – “Sport” and “Comfort”. They are quite self explanatory really. Apply the former on track days and switch to the latter upon returning from track days.

For the interior, much inspiration was drawn by the AMG SLS which is the definitive product of the Daimler subsidiary. The list of options alone, is big enough to render the 170 kg loss rather useless but at least you can be picky. Price tags have not yet been issued but time is all we have, as the SL 65 AMG will hit the markets somewhere around the second half of this year. Until then, feel free to check out our gallery.

  • Lamborghini Aventador and AMG SLS at a Houston Airfield [VIDEO]

Houston-Half-Mile-2012-thumbHere are two videos that promote an event called the Houston Half Mile Shootout. A familiar figure is in both of them – John Hennessey from Hennessey Performance which are organizing the event. We get a little intro at the beginning of both videos and we witness a half mile run at Ellington Field.

The cars – A Lamborghini Aventador 700-4, ownership to the Houston Texan linebacker Mario Williams. Hennessey is not driving this one but nevertheless, let us enjoy a bit of drama and thunder as we hear the sounds coming out of the 6.5-liter 700bhp V12 engine behind them . That majestic roar might be roughly translated into “Do not leave me behind, I am still mean, bad, serious and extremely cool” – a clear reference to the Aventador J hype that has been going on these days. Or maybe that’s just me talking.

On the second video, Hennessey himself has a go in an AMG SLS Roadster – even more noise and hair shuffling as a bonus. Small wonder. The Roadster has 571bhp 6.2-liter V8 engine that slams your face against the elements.

Everything revolves around the preparation for the Houston Half Mile Shootout event that will take place, along with the 4th annual Aeros & Autos event, at the Ellington Airport, Houston TX on the 12th of May. Registration is now open with as many as 115 vacancies still open. Let the challenge begin!
