  • Lexus LBX

Lexus has a proud history of pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. Since its founding in 1989, it has repeatedly pioneered new thinking and new products that have changed people’s perceptions and reshaped the luxury car market. It has constantly evolved the concept of what luxury means, not just by creating desirable and exciting products, but also by redefining the complete ownership experience.

Its record of achievement today welcomes a new name: the Lexus LBX.

The all-new, all-hybrid electric LBX is the smallest Lexus yet, but fully deserving of its status as a landmark model, one which breaks down the traditional luxury hierarchy and which will be a game-changer for the brand in Europe.

LBX stands for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover, a compact SUV that will extend Lexus’ brand appeal into new market territory. It embraces contemporary ideas in design and technology while maintaining the distinguishing Lexus qualities of the luxury craftsmanship and Omotenashi hospitality.

This is a car that’s simple, casual and easy to live with, but which makes no compromises in quality and attention to detail: the essence of Lexus has been distilled into a smaller package, transcending customers’ traditional expectations of what a premium compact SUV can offer.

It also breaks new ground by disrupting the traditional grade strategy to give owners more freedom to express their individual taste and sense of style.  True to Lexus’ commitment to “making luxury personal,” the LBX will be offered in a choice of four “atmospheres” in addition to its base grade. Rather than being defined by the level of equipment or comfort features, these atmospheres focus on expressing different refined, dynamic or sporty themes through styling details, colours, textures and finishes. A new Lexus Bespoke Build programme will offer yet more personalised options.

The LBX is also a breakthrough for Lexus as a business in Europe. For the first time, Europe has been the lead global region for the development of a new Lexus vehicle. This influence will help the LBX become one of the best-sellers for the brand in Europe.

The use of a three-letter name is significant – previously only the LFA supercar has enjoyed that distinction. The choice of the name LBX demonstrates Lexus’ commitment to and trust in its new model. Just as the LFA showed a different side to the brand in terms of attitude and performance, so the LBX will in its own way expand its reach and profile.

As a new entry point to Lexus’ well-established SUV line-up, it offers strong appeal to a younger audience and those who may not have considered a Lexus before. It will be an attractive proposition to those seeking to downsize or purchase a second vehicle, meeting their new lifestyle requirements.

Chief Engineer Kunihiko Endoh comments: “Our aim was to challenge the conventional concept of a luxury car. We have thoroughly pursued a driving experience that enables a natural dialogue between the driver and their vehicle and a design that has an refined presence.”

The LBX’s styling establishes a new Lexus identity with a “Resolute Look” front design that reinterprets the famous spindle grille. While the exterior dimensions are more compact than any other Lexus, the look is muscular and powerful. Inside, the emphasis is on driver-engagement with a focused driver’s cockpit based on Lexus’ Tazuna concept, and on creating a light, open feel with excellent visibility and an instrument panel that wraps around smoothly into the door panels.

In doing things differently with the LBX, Lexus has taken a new approach to building a model range, introducing choices that better reflect how today’s customers seek cars that match their personal style and character.

Following its world debut, the LBX will go into production in late 2023. Sales will begin in European and selected global markets from early 2024.

    EXTERIOR

Lexus’ design ambition was to create a car that is more relaxed than formal in character, displaying an authentic, effortless style that people will instantly feel a connection with.

The most significant aspect of the design is a new frontal arrangement that “breaks” the spindle grille – a design hallmark for the past decade – leading Lexus into a new era.

Koichi Suga, General Manager Lexus Design, explains: “We have ‘deconstructed’ the spindle grille to make way for a new design. We’ve succeeded in creating a new front face identity that’s completely different from before yet is instantly recognisable as a Lexus.”

The grille has been unified in a single trapezoid shape, positioned below a narrow aperture that runs beneath the leading edge of the bonnet, linking the slim headlight units. The design draws on the heritage of Lexus’ “Resolute Look.” Introduced with the LF-S concept car of 2003, this became a signature styling cue for Lexus production models from the early 2000s.

The seamless, frameless grille generates the lines of the LBX’s spindle body, contributing to the car’s strong, dynamic stance. It is also aerodynamically efficient, helping smooth airflow over and around the car. The new headlight design creates a strong visual signature, with the daytime running lights and turn indicators integrated in bi-functional units. With this new arrangement, the lights’ distinctive L-shape has been changed to face out rather than inwards, to match the direction of each indicator light.

Following the principles of Lexus Next Chapter Design, the car’s identity and proportions are rooted in the driving experience it delivers. The front pillars have been pulled back, making the cabin appear compact and the bonnet longer for a sporty profile. The flared wings express power and accentuate the large (18-inch) wheels and tyres, while short overhangs and a bold tightening of the area around the rear doors evoke nimble, dynamic performance.

The rear of the car also projects a strong stance. The licence plate has been moved down to the bumper so that the LEXUS lettered signature on the back door is more prominent on the clean expanse of the back door. Similarly, the latest evolution of the Lexus signature L-shaped light bar has greater visual impact, with the turn signal and reversing lamps having a subdued presence when not illuminated.

The LBX is 4,190 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,545 mm high and has a 2,580 mm wheelbase. The low-slung bonnet, belt mouldings flush with the body, a gate-style rear roof spoiler and precise light cluster designs enhance aerodynamic performance and contribute to the LBX’s efficiency, stability and responsive performance.

The exterior colour choices include vivid shades and Lexus’ deep-lustre sonic finishes. Emotion and Cool versions of the LBX can be specified with bi-tone paintwork, combining any colour option with a contrast black roof.

    DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

The LBX is the first Lexus model to be constructed on a variation of the GA-B small car global architecture platform. It has been fundamentally adjusted to meet Lexus requirements, giving it the core benefits of a low centre of gravity, wide tracks, short overhangs and a highly rigid body. It is also the foundation of the car’s fun-to-drive character, helping secure the Lexus Driving Signature in the smallest package yet. This helps create a natural dialogue between driver and car that ensures confidence, control and comfort at all times.

Chief Engineer Endoh explains: “To realise the Lexus sense of being at one with the car, we worked to achieve nimble driving that maximises the benefits of the car’s small size and light weight. At the same time, we focused more than ever on honing the fundamental characteristics without relying on electronic controls.”

The body is strengthened with structural adhesives and short-pitch welding, and strategic placing of bracing and reinforcements. At the same time, vehicle weight has been kept down by the use of lightweight materials, including an aluminium bonnet and moulded resin wheel arches, rockers and lower door sections. Strong yet light hot-stamped materials are used in the centre pillars and bumper reinforcement.

Setting the hip-point as low as 285 mm helps make the driver feel more at one with their vehicle, while maintaining an excellent view from the wheel, particularly when driving in city traffic.

Front and rear suspension systems are designed for high rigidity and light weight, giving the LBX agile, stable cornering and steering response with smooth ride comfort. All versions feature a MacPherson strut design at the front; front-wheel drive models use a rear torsion beam while the all-wheel drive LBX has a double-wishbone arrangement.

The electronically controlled braking system includes Vehicle Braking Posture Control. This automatically  balances front and rear brake force distribution to suppress pitching and maintain linear, reassuring performance. It also helps reduce vehicle roll when cornering, keeping the car comfortable and stable and filtering out vibrations.

    POWERTRAIN

The LBX is powered by a new generation, self-charging Lexus hybrid electric system featuring a compact and lightweight 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine. The principal hybrid system components have undergone a substantial redesign, including the transaxle and power control unit, to improve efficiency, reduce losses, save weight and reduce size. There is also a new low resistance, high output, bi-polar nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery which enables extra electric motor support when accelerating and extends the car’s all-electric EV driving capability.

The technology developments have allowed Lexus to focus on more rewarding performance and a level of driving pleasure that was not possible with previous systems. Maximum output from the full hybrid system is 136 DIN hp/ 100 kW with peak torque of 185 Nm.

The engine operates with world-class thermal efficiency, supported by high-speed combustion technology and design features such as straight intake ports and laser-clad intake valve seats. Other key features include ultra-lightweight pistons engineered for operation at high rpm and electronic intelligent variable valve-timing.

The powertrain also features a newly designed transaxle. The revised power control unit is mounted directly above the transaxle, a design which helps give the LBX a low bonnet line. Further space is saved by the two motor-generators being located on separate shafts, reducing the drivetrain’s overall length.

The NiMH battery is an all-new bi-polar unit with reduced weight and a more compact design, yet it delivers higher output with much quicker response. Thus, it contributes to the LBX’s performance with instant, powerful acceleration like that of battery electric vehicle, as well as its fuel efficiency. It benefits from a redesigned cooling system to help prolong battery life and performance.

The powertrain is tuned for enjoyable performance, whether driving around town or on winding country roads, with faithful handling and a linear acceleration feel that is more closely aligned to the driver’s use of the accelerator pedal. Drivability is also enhanced by Hybrid System Control that closely matches engine sound and acceleration. Thanks to the hybrid system upgrades, all-electric EV driving can be enjoyed at higher speeds and over longer distances, maximising the LBX’s efficiency.

The LBX’s authentic SUV quality includes the option of Lexus’ E-Four all-wheel drive, which introduces an additional electric motor on the rear axle. When pulling away, cornering and driving on low-grip surfaces, the system automatically directs drive force to the rear wheels, helping keep the vehicle stable and maintaining driver confidence.

The LBX’s luxury status is witnessed by the lengths Lexus has gone to manage noise and vibration (NVH). These include adding a balancer shaft to the engine to reduce vibration that can generate a booming effect in the cabin. Special attention has been paid to the doors where damping sheets have been introduced to suppress high frequency noise but enhance low frequency noise to give a distinct and pleasing sound. To counter vibration and road noise from the roof, high-damping mastic has been used together with an extensive silencer made of a highly effective insulating material. Other measures include a seal around the entire edge of the bonnet and noise insulating and absorbing sheets, liners, mouldings and foam in key areas throughout the car. Beneath the vehicle, high-damping and structural adhesives play their part in reducing noise and vibration, while also contributing the car’s overall rigidity.

    INTERIOR

Lexus designers sought to create a simple and refined interior that creates the feel and atmosphere of a higher segment model. This effect is founded on three key elements: good visibility with an open view out and a simple, smooth instrument panel; the sense of wide interior space; and a centre console with a commanding presence.

The premium quality and attention to detail is witnessed in a choice of upholsteries and trims with strong visual and tactile appeal. As well as top-quality semi-aniline leather, the options include a vegan-friendly interior that uses synthetic leather and materials for the seat coverings and steering wheel, shift lever and door trims. The LBX also features new Tsuyusami charcoal trim inlays, created using a new film technique that uses multiple layers to give a highly textured appearance with a sense of depth. Ambient lighting adds to the Omotenashi effect of people being made welcome and feeling completely at home in the vehicle. Highlighting different parts of the cabin, the lighting design provides a range of 50 colour options, curated in themes that evoke different moods.

The driver’s cockpit is an interpretation of Lexus’ Tazuna concept, first introduced on the NX mid-size SUV. This positions principal controls and information sources immediately around the driver, so their operation only requires minimal movements of hand or eye. This helps keep the driver focused on the task of driving, with least distraction. The position and angle of the steering wheel were precisely calculated to give the driver a rewarding sense of control.

Here, the Tazuna concept is enhanced with a new, 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display, featured in a Lexus for the first time. The lay-out and prominence of the meters and data change according to the drive mode selected and can be customised to suit individual preferences. An optional head-up display is also available.

Thanks to the LBX’s compact size, almost every inch of the car can be seen from the steering wheel, adding to the confidence, comfort and control the driver enjoys with the Lexus Driving Signature. The contouring of the bonnet and the shape and position of the front pillars reduce the blind sports and give an extended downward view that helps the driver steer more precise lines.

To help maintain a wide, clear view, the horizontal instrument panel has a clean and simple design. At each side, its form flows into the door panel, giving a sense of wrapping around the front seat occupants, so the feel is expansive yet encompassing. The continuous line created by this design also helps the driver sense the degree of vehicle roll when driving through bends. A low hip-point adds to the driver’s sense of being at one with their car, while ample front knee-space is provided. To ensure a good view out for everyone on board, the rear seats are set slightly higher than those at the front.

The centre console has a strong presence with the large multimedia touchscreen tilted back so that it integrates smoothly with the structure. The unit has upholstered side pads and houses two cupholders and multiple storage points and USB ports for device connection and charging. The load compartment offers up to 332 litres (FWD models with rear seats in place) of space – room enough for two 75-litre cases to be carried beneath the folding tonneau cover.

    MULTIMEDIA AND INFOTAINMENT

The LBX is equipped with the latest Lexus Link Connect system, operated via a 9.8-inch touchscreen.

The system provides cloud-based navigation, optimising journey planning with real-time information on traffic events and delays. Further convenience is provided by the “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant which responds to voice commands from both driver and front seat passenger.

Smartphone integration is enabled using wireless or wired connections for Apple CarPlay, or a wired link for Android Auto. Further convenience is provided by an optional digital key. Compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones devices, this allows owners to use their smartphone to unlock and start their car. They don’t have to take their phone out of their pocket or bag, just having it on their person is sufficient. They can also share the digital key when other people need to access or use the vehicle.

In common with the latest new Lexus models, the LBX offers seamless over-the-air software updates for its multimedia and safety systems, so owners can benefit from upgrades without having to organise a visit to a Lexus workshop.

Mark Levinson, Lexus’ exclusive audio partner, has designed an optional premium system for the car, featuring an array of 13 optimally positioned speakers. They include a subwoofer integrated in the back door, avoiding any loss of space in the load compartment.

    MODEL RANGE

With the LBX, Lexus is taking a new approach to building a model range, to better match customers’ preferences and lifestyles.

The line-up offers a choice of four model “atmospheres” in addition to the base grade: Elegant and Relax which focus on a refined feel, and Emotion and Cool which have a sportier, more dynamic character. Each has been designed with a different type of customer in mind.

Emotion and Cool models stand out with bi-tone paintwork and 18-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish. The Elegant and Relax versions have a monotone exterior paint finish and glossy 18-inch alloys.

Where the interior specifications are concerned, the Emotion model comes with perforated synthetic leather upholstery with red accents and contrast stitching on the seats, centre console and door trim. The LBX Cool – the top dynamic-themed model – has an Ultrasuede and leather bi-tone black/dark grey interior with copper details and stitching.

Different moods are evoked by the Elegant and Relax atmospheres. Synthetic leather in a subtle Forest Brown shade or Ammonite Sand features in the LBX Elegant, for the door panels, instrument panel and console pads as well as the seat upholstery. For the Relax model, the choice is Saddle Tan or Black semi-aniline leather with distinctive Tatami stitching.

In addition to the four atmosphere models there is an entry level LBX which, comes with advanced technology features as standard rather than extra-cost options, in contrast to some competitor models. Notably these include the extensive active safety and driver assistance systems included in the latest generation Lexus Safety System +. The entry model and the Emotion and Elegant versions can be specified with a vegan-friendly interior with no leather products.

Equipment option highlights include a 12.3-inch Tazuna concept digital instrument display, head-up display, remote parking, digital key, Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio, Panasonic’s nanoe™-X air purification technology and a power back door.

    Lexus Bespoke Build

Owners who wish to give their LBX a more personalised look can take advantage of the new Lexus Bespoke Build service. Lexus’ customer-first approach gives them the freedom to personalise their vehicle with tailor-made details.

The bespoke treatment allows customers to change the colour of the seatbelts and the upholstery embroidery patterns and stitching colour and the trim ornamentation. The choice of luxury materials includes L-aniline leather – a prestige leather only available on LBX and the flagship LS sedan within the Lexus range – and Ultrasuede in different colour combinations. This personalisation service will be introduced in selected markets after the start of LBX sales in 2024.

    SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE

The LBX benefits from the comprehensive safety and driver assistance provisions of the latest generation of Lexus Safety System +. This equips the car with multiple systems to detect accident risks, alert the driver and automatically provide steering, braking and drive force control if required to help avoid or lessen the consequences of a collision. Key elements include a Pre-Collision System with Intersection Turn Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist/Lane Keep Assist and Road Sign Assist. Additional items that support safer driving and manoeuvring and reduce the burden on the driver include Lexus’ e-latch electric door release system with Safe Exit Assist, a driver monitor, intelligent parking sensors with auto-braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Blind Spot Monitor.

An extended safety will be optionally available, introducing features such as a Front Cross Traffic Alert system and a Panoramic View Monitor. A remote parking option can take all the stress out of manoeuvring the car into a tight space; it even allows the driver to park their vehicle remotely, using their smartphone.

The driver enjoys better visibility in poor weather conditions with a new wet arm wiper, as featured previously on Lexus’ flagship LC and LS models. This distributes washer fluid from the wiper itself, giving more thorough and immediate windscreen cleaning performance.

  • Lexus LM

Lexus introduced the all-new Lexus LM at Auto Shanghai 2023, and it will be launched in over 60 countries worldwide, including Europe and Japan. The brand is known for its innovative spirit, offering a range of products to meet customers’ needs globally.

The first-generation Lexus LM was launched in 2020 to fulfill customer demand for chauffeur-driven MPVs in Asia. The new LM has been completely redesigned to provide a luxurious and comfortable experience for all passengers, with a focus on ride comfort and functionality.

The exterior design features a sleek and elegant form, reflecting the brand’s design language, while the interior offers practicality and refinement for drivers and meticulously crafted seats and technology for passengers.

LEXUS INTERNATIONAL NEW LM CHIEF ENGINEER TAKAMI YOKOO

The new Lexus LM was developed to meet the diverse lifestyles of luxury customers. The concept was to create a mobile space where customers could be themselves and relax from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. The goal was to inspire positive thought and action.

The development team faced the challenge of translating the Lexus Driving Signature to the LM, which many customers would enjoy from the rear seat with a chauffeur driving. They realized that by providing driving dynamics faithful to the driver’s intentions, they could create a feeling of security and refinement for rear seat passengers.

The team paid attention to every detail, from the chassis and body to the suspension and aerodynamic design. The seats were designed to suppress body sway, and the interior was tailored to high quality. The team hopes that customers will enjoy the “Luxury Mover” that Lexus has created with passion and care.

    Ride Comfort

The development of the new Lexus LM prioritized ride quality for all passengers. MPVs have large aperture sliding doors, so ensuring body rigidity was crucial. Lexus improved core strength to achieve 50% higher torsional rigidity than the current model, using features such as braces on the radiator support and rear underfloor, a straight rocker structure, quarter pillar reinforcement, and structural adhesive for the upper body and floor.

Seat development analyzed passenger body movements for a relaxed state and minimized head movement. The front seats optimize surface pressure distribution for body hold, while the second-row seats use two types of shock-absorbing materials for gentle support. The AVS Suspension with Frequency-Sensitive Piston Valve provides excellent ride quality, while the “Rear Comfort” drive mode prioritizes rear-seat comfort with reduced posture changes during acceleration and deceleration.

    Quietness

To make the new LM comfortable and quiet, a three-step approach to noise reduction was taken. The first step was reducing generated noise or source noise, mainly from road noise and wind noise. This was done by taking specific countermeasures such as using acoustic glass and tuning the engine and related mounts. The second step was preventing noise from entering the vehicle, achieved by sound insulation, and the third step was reducing noise inside the vehicle through sound absorption. Carefully calculated amounts and thicknesses of sound-absorbing, sound-insulating, and vibration-damping materials were placed throughout the vehicle to greatly reduce cabin noise.

A UNIQUE IDENTITY, WITH PROPORTIONS BORN FROM FUNCTIONAL PURITY AND DYNAMIC ELEGANCE

The primary design concept of the new LM was “Dignified Elegance”, aiming to distinguish it as a flagship Lexus MPV. It achieves this by blending a distinct and stylish exterior appearance with a roomy and cozy interior.

    Exterior design rooted in function

The LM’s exterior design prioritizes next-generation Lexus design by creating a unique identity with functional purity and dynamic performance. The form of the LM is both elegant and dynamic, emphasizing the front and rear wheels for improved driving performance and ride comfort.

The cabin is spacious, with minimal interruptions in the longitudinal form, maximizing passenger space. The front design continues the evolution of the Spindle Body, a signature feature of Lexus. By applying the exterior color to the grille, the spindle shape is seamlessly integrated into the body. The minimized gap between the parts and body contributes to aerodynamic and cooling performance, as well as maneuverability.

A spacious interior combining comfort and convenience

The interior of the LM was crafted with the aim of creating a relaxing and spacious lounge-like environment using exquisite craftsmanship and a human-centered approach. The front seats incorporate the Lexus Tazuna Cockpit concept for a modern and spacious feel. The 6- and 7-seat versions focus on spaciousness and visibility, with personal touches throughout the cabin. The 4-seat model raises the level of personalization and privacy, featuring a partition equipped with a large screen display and other functions seamlessly integrated into the design elements. The interior colors feature sophisticated contemporary finishes, and the large independent seats aim to provide ultimate comfort. All components of the interior were designed to reduce visual noise, resulting in a relaxing environment for passengers.

MIND AND BODY IN EQUILIBRIUM THROUGH EFFORTLESS OMOTENASHI AND FEATURES WITH A WEALTH OF DETAIL

To meet the diverse needs of customers, the new LM has been developed with a focus on creating a relaxing indoor environment that feels like a hotel suite or a mobile private study.

Indirect lighting provides a relaxing atmosphere, and passengers can choose from a range of 64 illumination colors, including 14 themed colors and 50 custom colors that can be selected according to preference.

The “Rear Climate Concierge,” a Lexus first, provides integrated control of elements such as air-conditioning, seat position, sunshades, and lighting to create an optimal cabin environment for passengers. There are four preset modes, and customizable modes are available to suit individual preferences.

The rear multi-operation panel is a detachable touch-screen controller that can be used to control various rear-seat functions, including the “Rear Climate Concierge,” seats, audio, and lighting independently. Two controllers are located on the console armrests of the second-row seats to allow left and right passengers to set their own preferences.

4-SEAT MODEL ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR CHAUFFEUR-DRIVEN USE

The new LM is available in three configurations: 6 and 7 seats and a 4-seat model intended for use as a chauffeur-driven MPV.

The 4-seat model features a partition that separates the front and rear seats. The upper part of the partition has a retractable glass window with dimming function, while the lower part has a large 48-inch widescreen display that can be used for different purposes including online meetings and entertainment. A refrigerator and storage spaces are located under the display.

The rear seats have independent seats exclusive to the 4-seater model. The extension and retraction range of the ottoman has been increased, and the heated armrests and ottomans are another first for Lexus. The dedicated rear seat Warmth-Sensing IR (Infrared) Matrix Sensor is located on the upper center portion of the partition and detects the temperature of occupants and the parts of the vehicle that affect ambient temperature. The system then controls the air-conditioning and seat heaters to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.

The LM also features a retractable table, which fits inside the armrest and has a leather-wrapped surface with improved texture and a non-slip, non-scratch finish.

The LM creates a sense of spaciousness through moderate reflections of sound. The layered structure of the roof headlining intentionally made non-sound-absorbent to create an environment with a pleasant, natural level of quietness.

Advanced preventive safety technology Lexus Safety System +

Lexus aims for a society with “Zero fatalities and injuries from traffic accidents” by continuously developing safety technologies. To achieve this goal, Lexus Safety System + is now included in the new LM. This system offers Proactive Driving Assist and integrates with the driver monitor to provide appropriate driving support and optimal vehicle control based on the driver’s operating conditions, ensuring safe and confident driving for customers.

    Main performance enhancements

    • Pre-crash safety (PCS): Uses a sensor that combines millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera to ensure precise recognition and reliability, thereby expanding the scope of activation of the Pre-Collision Warning, Pre-Collision Brake Assist, and Pre-Collision Braking.
    • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (with all-speed follow function): When the alert function of the driver monitor is enabled, the system alerts the driver and provides supportive control that helps ensure a sufficient safety margin during normal driving, so that the driver can safely resume driving once they return to a normal state.
    • Lane Departure Alert (LDA): If the system detects a driver looking aside while driving, the system will activate an alert or activate lane departure control at an earlier timing than usual.
    • Abnormal Driver Response System: If the driver’s posture becomes significantly impaired during lane tracing assist (LTA) control, the system judges that it is difficult for the driver to continue driving and warns others by flashing hazard lamps, etc., while the vehicle gradually decelerates. In addition, doors are unlocked after the vehicle is stopped and a life-saving request is made through an automatic Help Net connection, contributing to early driver rescue and first aid.
    • Proactive Driving Assist (PDA): PDA supports steering and braking operations to avoid getting too close to pedestrians, bicycles, and parked vehicles by anticipating risks according to the driving situation, such as pedestrians crossing the road or situations where objects may suddenly appear. When the distance between the car in front is too close, or when the speed of the car is too fast for the curve ahead, the system will gently assist in decelerating the car. Furthermore, when the system detects an approaching signal intersection, it provides advanced deceleration support in conjunction with blinker operation, thereby helping to ensure a margin of maneuverability when turning right or left. It provides constant steering assist to keep the vehicle in the center of the lane. The system supports safe and confident driving by providing appropriate support for a wide range of driving situations.

    Lexus Teammate supports comfortable mobility

The advanced driving support technology “Lexus Teammate” now includes “Advanced Drive (traffic jam support)” and “Advanced Park (with remote function)” features.

New (experiential) value through advanced technology

Lexus introduces another first with the e-Latch system, which has an “easy closer” feature on the front doors for smooth and quiet operation. This makes it easier to close the doors from a partially-open state. Additionally, the front and sliding doors have the Safe Exit Assist (with Door Open Control) (SEA), which warns passengers of any approaching vehicles or bicycles from behind, and stops the doors from opening to avoid accidents.

  • Lexus RX [US]

Lexus has undertaken a complete reinvention of the RX large luxury SUV, building on the model’s great heritage and breaking new design and technology boundaries to increase the breadth of its capabilities and its appeal to an even wider customer base.

In 1998, the original RX model founded the market segment for luxury-focused SUVs. Since then, it has continuously evolved, notably becoming the first electrified model in the premium market with the launch of the RX 400h in 2005. Today, it is firmly established as a global core model for Lexus with 3.5 million sales – 300,000 of these in Europe. The all-new fifth generation model range will strengthen this position and Lexus’ reputation for design and technology excellence.

Koji Sato, President of Lexus International, said: “For the all-new RX we were determined to keep the Lexus DNA of supreme quality, ride comfort and refinement, and elevate the driving experience to the next level, delivering a unique Lexus Driving Signature.”

Together with the recently launched NX and the upcoming RZ all-electric model, the RX will help build the “Next Chapter” of the Lexus brand. These three models will give the company its most comprehensive coverage yet of the D/E premium SUV market, the heart of Lexus’ business.

Lexus has developed its new Next Chapter design language for the new RX, including a new ‘spindle body,‘ achieved by integrating the signature spindle grille concept into the entire front of the vehicle. The RX team also drew inspiration from the model’s rich design heritage to produce a car that is instantly recognisable as RX, but with a more dynamic, elegant and confident character.

Inside, the driver-centred ‘Tazuna’ cockpit focuses on giving the driver direct, intuitive control of the vehicle, following the principal of ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road’. It also improves the driving experience, with its intuitive and clean layout, enhanced by the new Lexus Link Multimedia system with the “Hey Lexus“ onboard assistant, a 14-inch touchscreen and remote functions that can be accessed using the Lexus Link smartphone app.

To craft the new RX’s ‘Lexus Driving Signature’, Lexus optimised the SUV’s fundamentals such as the centre of gravity, inertia specifications, weight reduction, rigidity, and powertrain to create a more natural dialogue between car and driver. The improved handling and responsiveness are founded on a development of Lexus‘ GA-K platform that delivers excellent body rigidity and a low centre of gravity.

The new RX comes with a line-up of three different electrified powertrains in Europe. At the core of the brand’s offering in Western Europe, the RX 450h+ is the first RX to adopt Lexus‘ plug-in hybrid technology. The RX 350h hybrid electric is positioned as an efficient alternative to lower displacement diesel and petrol powertrains. And for customers seeking more exhilarating performance, Lexus is introducing its first performance-focused turbocharged hybrid, the RX 500h, which comes with DIRECT4 drive force control.

For Eastern markets, alongside the RX 500h performance hybrid, Lexus is also offering the RX 350 with a new 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering higher performance than the current 3.5-litre model.

Leveraging Lexus’ world-class safety technology, the RX benefits from the third generation Lexus Safety System +, with an improved Pre-Collision System, new Proactive Driving Assist and optional Extended Safety Package. It is also available with Lexus’ Safe Exit Assist; linked to an electronic door release system, it prevents doors being opened into the path of vehicles or cyclists approaching from the rear.

    Next Chapter Lexus design

The mission for the exterior design team was to give the new RX a unique identity with proportions born from its dynamic driving experience. This approach marks further development of the “Next Chapter” Lexus design, introduced with the new generation NX model, through which the styling directly communicates the car’s performance and the quality of the driving experience.

At the same time as the designers could look to the future, there was also a requirement to project the quality of Lexus as a global luxury brand and for the new model to be recognisably an RX, with details that reference its heritage.

These diverse qualities are witnessed in a car that projects a powerful road presence and performance potential, with a bold appearance and firmly planted stance. The sense of “newness” is immediate and strong, giving the car visual impact to match the quality of its three new electrified powertrains.

Next Chapter design has taken the spindle shape from the signature Lexus grille to create a new spindle body effect, integrating the shape into the entire front of the vehicle. The grille itself has been reinterpreted as a seamless unit that integrates with the body along its edges. The new slim headlight units and a front track that is wider by 15 mm add emphasis to the car’s lower centre of gravity and planted look.

In side-on view, a horizontal posture was created by raising the front of the bonnet and lowering the bottom edge of the rear window, compared to the current RX. This compresses the area above the wheels, creating a solid, well-grounded look.

While the new RX has the same overall length as the current model, the bonnet has been elongated, with the A-pillar moved further back, and the wheelbase has been extended by 60 mm. Sculpted surfaces on the door panels, flared rear wings and 21-inch wheels add a sense of powerful traction and dynamism.

The RX’s characteristic “floating roof” effect created by a blacked-out rear-pillar is retained but given a stronger three-dimensional appearance. The rear of the car communicates a sense of power with a shorter overhang, wider track (+45 mm) and a sweeping transition from the wings round to the tail lights. The rear combination lights are set in a light bar that spans the width of the car and wraps around the corners to heighten the wider look.

Nine exterior colours are available, including a new Sonic Copper – one of several options using Lexus’ advanced sonic paint technology for a more lustrous finish with deep contrasts. The wheel choices include new 21-inch alloys – larger rims than previously for the RX, adding to the model’s dynamic look and powerful stance.

    Lighting

Slim, three-projector LED headlights are featured on the new RX mid-grade and, with a BladeScan Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) on the Luxury grade and F SPORT Performance model; other versions use bi-Beam LED design. These sit above daytime running lights with surface illumination that have a stronger three-dimensional look and silhouette; those on higher grade models have elegant “fade-in” illumination. Quality is further expressed in turn indicators with light guides, giving a seamless lighting effect.

The front fog lights and cornering lights are discreet units, incorporated in bezels set low in the front bumper

At the rear, the combination lights are set in an L-shaped light bar with a single lens that spans the full width of the vehicle and wraps around the corners, emphasising the powerful design and underlining the new LEXUS logo.

    Aerodynamics

The visual appeal of the exterior design is matched by its aerodynamic efficiency. Effective details include the precise calculation of the rear spoiler shape and position,  a belt moulding that is flush with the bodywork and the addition of a fin on the bottom edge of the rear bumper which suppresses air flow turbulence behind the rear wheels.

Beneath the car there is an engine undercover with a dimpled surface that creates air vortices as the car moves, enhancing the feeling of it being in firm contact with the road. Across the range, each model has a larger area of flat undercover and flat-surfaced heat insulators, creating a flat floor for smoother air flow.

    F SPORT design features

The RX 350 is also available in F SPORT grade, while the RX 500h is introduced exclusively as an F SPORT Performance model, with additional performance engineering features (details in the powertrain and dynamic performance sections below).

In design terms, the F SPORT models are distinguished by exclusive styling touches inside and out. The exterior details include dedicated 10-spoke 21-inch alloy wheels with a matt black finish, black roof rails and door mirrors, a seamless grille with a specific piano black mesh pattern, F SPORT front and rear bumpers, black F SPORT badging on the front wing and additional black stainless steel mouldings on the doors and bumpers. Six exterior colours are available for the F SPORT Performance, including the new Sonic Copper.

As well as style additions there are also extra aero features: the lower edge of the front bumper is shaped to generate higher downforce and additional wheel arch mouldings serve to release the pressure inside the bumper and to regulate air flow around the front wheels.

Inside, the F SPORT features include the steering wheel and shift lever with perforated leather trim, the meter display, aluminium sports pedals and trim details, F SPORT-branded scuff plates and sports front seats upholstered in Black or Dark Rose leather with Ultrasuede bolsters. Trim inserts are in a new Dark Spin aluminium with a horizontal line pattern that gives the surface shading and texture.

    Interior design

The RX’s interior expresses luxury through simplicity. This “less is more” approach dispenses with superfluous details in favour of a cool, contemporary look with clean, uncluttered surfaces. The effect of this Lexus design evolution is an immediate sense of space, well-being, refinement and comfort.

The cabin retains elements that display Lexus’ Takumi hand-crafted luxury and appeal to all the senses. Even the opening and closing feel and sound of the doors came under close scrutiny.

The new design simplicity can be seen in the way the dashboard sweeps in a clean, continuous form, taking in the meter hood, instrument panel and the door trims.  Equipping the car with the new e-latch electronic door release system has allowed the interior handles to be moved lower down and the upper section of the door panels to be carved out, creating a natural extension of the instrument panel.

The RX is available with a new, larger panoramic roof with an opening front section. To give the best possible view from the rear seats, the centre frame has the thinnest possible cross-section without compromising collision safety.

    Tazuna driver’s cockpit

The theme of simplicity complements Lexus’ Tazuna concept for the driver’s cockpit, which rationalises the location and ease of use of the controls and information sources, so that attention is focused on the job of driving.

The design allows the driver to have a deeper, more intuitive connection with the car, making it easier for them to control it as they intend. The Tazuna approach can be seen in details such as the new multimedia system: the large, 14-inch touchscreen and the provision of physical buttons for frequently used functions help minimise driver head movement. The modular design and positioning of the principal information sources – the meters, centre console display and optional head-up display – mean only smooth, small changes in the driver’s line of sight are required to view them.

    SUV packaging

The interior packaging is that of a true SUV, delivering the necessary practicality, convenience and flexibility. Basic advantages are drawn from the GA-K platform, including the lower centre of gravity (-15 mm), increased wheelbase (2,850 mm – +60 mm) and wider tracks (front +15 mm, rear +50 mm), achieved within an overall length that is the same as the current RX (4,890 mm).

The driver’s field of view is increased to provide top-class visibility for safer and more comfortable driving. This is helped by a new ergonomic design for the area around the front pillars to give a better sight-line when cornering. Accurate line-tracing is also helped by raising the front edge of the bonnet, so that it is easier to judge the vehicle corners, and optimising the height of the central bonnet bulge. Similarly, thinner rear quarter pillars give a better rearward view for the driver, for example when merging onto a highway.

The design provides more knee room for rear seat passengers and a better view both to the side and ahead, helped by the car’s lower belt line and the wider forward field of vision. Access has been made easier with a lower hip-point and adjustment of the easy access power adjustment.

The rear load compartment matches the current RX for capacity, despite the new model having a shorter rear overhang. This is thanks to clever design solutions, including a thinner back door and a lower loading height. The VDA volume is 612 litres with the rear seats in place, above the deckboard. This gives enough space to carry four 9.5-inch golf bags or two 77-litre and two 63-litre suitcases. There is extra space beneath the deck for tools and smaller items and roof rails are available so that accessories such as roof boxes and cycle carriers can be fitted. The roof bars are compatible for use with the optional panoramic roof.

    Upholsteries and trims

The new RX is Lexus’ first model to be offered with a leather-like upholstery that uses no animal products, featured on the seats, steering wheel and shift lever in the Comfort grade models.

Smooth leather colour options for Executive grade include new Dark Sepia, Ammonite Sand and Hazel, with black inlays. These are also available for the semi-aniline leather on Luxury grade models with Ash Sumi Black and new Dark Bamboo option wood grain trim detailing.

The door panels and seat shoulders have a new embossed L-motif pattern that creates a shadow effect, inspired by the traditional Japanese Kageri  (dark shadow) aesthetic.

DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE AND THE LEXUS DRIVING SIGNATURE

    • New model marks a major leap forward in terms of dynamic performance
    • Lexus Driving Signature strengthens the driver’s connection with the vehicle, giving confidence, comfort and control at all times
    • Handling, responsiveness and comfort supported by increased body rigidity, a lower centre of gravity, weight-saving measures and improved inertia specifications

An essential element in the Lexus “Next Chapter” is the enabling of a natural connection between driver and car, a “dialogue” in which the vehicle responds exactly as the driver intends and where the driver always feels confident, comfortable and in control. This is the Lexus Driving Signature, a dynamic performance hallmark of all new Lexus models which the RX achieves through the strengthening of its fundamental qualities and refinement of its drive control.

The adoption of Lexus’ Global Architecture GA-K platform is the foundation for achieving lower centre of gravity, improved inertia specifications, weight reduction (by up to 90 kg compared to the current model) and increased body rigidity – elements that play a central role in taking the model’s dynamic performance to a higher level.

    Body rigidity

The inherent rigidity of the GA-K platform translates directly into ride quality, reassuring responsiveness, faithful, agile handling and comfort.

Although this platform also underpins the new Lexus NX, it has been significantly redesigned for use in the RX. The changes have allowed for an increase in the wheelbase and the installation of an additional cross-member and additional suspension braces. This strengthens the body rigidity and allows for more accurate suspension tuning.

Measures to secure a greater torsional stiffness also include a seamless ring frame at the rear. Structural joints have been strengthened with more extensive use of adhesives (an extra 2.6 m compared to the current RX), laser screw welding and new short pitch welding. In total the welding length has been increased by 7.4 m. Using high-rigidity foam around the back door aperture provides lightweight but effective reinforcement.

Following the innovation introduced on the all-new NX, the RX adopts a twin-latch mechanism for the bonnet. This allows the bonnet to contribute to the overall rigidity of the car’s front end, while also giving quieter performance with less vibration when travelling at speed.

    Weight-saving measures

Lexus has introduced new materials into the car’s construction to reduce vehicle weight without compromising the integrity of the structure or performance.

Notably, the thickness of the side members and the door assemblies has been reduced and high tensile strength and hot-stamped steels have been adopted for certain components, including the centre pillar.

Further weight savings have been achieved by changing the front wings from steel to aluminium – a measure that has helped improve the car’s front/rear weight distribution. No detail is too small: the covers for the fuel filler and the RX 450h+ charging port have been switched from steel to resin.

    Noise and vibration countermeasures

Producing a cabin that’s comfortable and quiet at all times was a priority development goal for the new RX. Particular targets were to achieve a pleasant door closing sound, with no unwanted noise; a reduction in booming when the drivetrain is idling; and less transmission of road noise, particularly when there is a change in surface.

To produce the ideal door closing sound, unwanted high frequency noise has been eliminated through detailed design changes and the use of high-damping material. Booming has been controlled by measures to suppress vibration of the windscreen and back door, while the use of high-damping mastic on the roof and side door panels has reduced the level of road noise experience inside the vehicle.

Further use of noise-proofing material to absorb and insulate sound has contributed to a quieter interior where conversation can be enjoyed with clarity during cruising. Elsewhere, steps have been taken to reduce wind noise generated around the front pillars and door mirrors.

    Suspension

The aim of the suspension design was to support delivery of good steering feel, stability and a ground-hugging, flat vehicle posture that isn’t affected by external disturbances.

The new MacPherson system at the front is optimised for ride comfort and linear response to the driver’s steering inputs, with better absorption of shock and vibration from uneven road surfaces. This entailed a comprehensive refinement of all the key components, including the layout and performance characteristics of the arms, bushes and shock absorbers.

At the rear there is a new multi-link set-up that is engineered for better lateral stability and handling higher levels of torque. A focus on improved component rigidity has contributed to better steering response and giving the driver a sense of the rear of the car having a secure, planted feel at all times.

    Adaptive Variable Suspension

The Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), featured as standard on Luxury and F SPORT/F SPORT Performance grades, provides independent damping control at each wheel, giving a more comfortable ride on uneven surfaces, higher damping force when turning and flat ride stability.

Compared to the system on the current RX, the damping force range has been increased, so AVS is effective on an even wider range of surface quality and in different driving operations. Finer adjustment of the damping force gives smoother response the changes in road quality and response is quick, giving better control and reducing body roll.

The driver can choose between two damping force control modes. ‘Normal’ gives a high balance between steering response and ride comfort while ‘Sport’ prioritises steering response and a flat ride, with more frequent use of hard/high damping force.

    Braking system

The new RX hybrid electric models adopt a new AHB-G electronically controlled brake system, a pressure-on-demand system that uses a high-performance pump motor, giving a natural braking feel, controllability and responsiveness. Front-rear brake force distribution is controlled by independent pressure regulation, helping the vehicle maintain a stable posture under braking. The system’s refinement is also reflected in a new damping mechanism for the brake pedal, giving smooth operation and controllability.

The F SPORT model is equipped with larger, 400 mm diameter ventilated front discs and new opposed six-piston aluminium monoblock callipers. The new callipers – painted black and bearing the Lexus logo – are highly rigid. They provide a greater brake pad surface area and uniform pressure. The driver will notice the benefits in linear, direct and stable braking and fade-resistant performance.

The RX 350 gasoline models are fitted with a vacuum brake system with optimised booster and master cylinder characteristics to give superior braking force, control and response.

    Vehicle Braking Posture Control

Vehicle Braking Posture Control is a Lexus world-first, providing reassuring performance that communicates a linear braking feel to the driver and a sense of all four wheels being in secure contact with the road.

Provided on the RX 450h+ and RX 350h, this varies the front/rear brake force distribution, according to the driver’s pressure on the brake pedal and the vertical suspension movements. This reduces pitching to maintain a stable vehicle posture.

On the RX 500h, the DIRECT4 drive force control system is used to control vehicle posture as well.

    Dynamic Rear Steering

The RX 500h F SPORT Performance uses a Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) system which automatically calculates the optimum steering angle for the rear wheels, in line with vehicle speed and direction.

The maximum rear wheel turning angle has been increased to four degrees. This improves low-speed manoeuvrability and helps maintain stability at high speeds.

At low and mid-speeds, the rear wheels turn counter to the front wheels while at high speeds they turn in phase with the front axle. The DRS angle is also optimally controlled as part of the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) operation.

    Trail Mode

Trail Mode is provided on the Lexus RX for the first time, integrating control of the all-wheel drive system, braking and drive force to prevent wheel-slip when driving on slippery or uneven roads. This allows maximum drive force to be used, even when driving on rough road surfaces.

    POWERTRAINS AND PERFORMANCE

    • New electrified powertrains give Lexus complete coverage of the large premium SUV segment
    •  Ground-breaking new RX 500h turbocharged performance hybrid with DIRECT4

    • RX 350h the new entry point to the electrified RX range

The all-new RX provides more comprehensive segment coverage in terms of powertrain choice than any previous generation. Lexus has brought to bear more than 15 years’ experience in electrified powertrain technology to embrace the evolution of the sector and provide a choice that includes the first plug-in hybrid electric RX, an accessible and efficient full hybrid electric model and, for the first time, a completely new performance hybrid, aimed at customers seeking a higher level of dynamic performance.

Alongside the new, all-electric RZ 450e battery electric model, this expansion of the RX line-up gives more customers the chance to choose their ideal electrified option.

    RX 500h: a game-changing performance hybrid with DIRECT4

    • 2.4-litre turbo hybrid engine with six-speed automatic transmission and DIRECT4
    • Output: 371 DIN hp/273 kW
    • 0-100 km/h: 6.2 sec *
    • CO2: 182-189 g/km *
    • Fuel consumption: 8.0-8.3 l/100 km *

The RX 500h marks a breakthrough in hybrid electric technology that sets it apart from any hybrid model that has gone before. Lexus has successfully shifted the focus from optimum efficiency to produce a model with a genuine performance edge, raising the RX’s appeal with customers who want high-end electrified performance.

It uses a completely new parallel hybrid architecture, featuring a turbocharged 2.4-litre turbo petrol engine and six-speed transmission, integrated front motor and power control unit, hybrid battery and a compact 76 kW rear e-axle. Total system output is 371 DIN hp/273 kW with 550 Nm of torque, giving 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.2 seconds.

    Parallel hybrid system

The front electric motor is positioned between the engine and the transmission (which has a clutch on both sides), enabling great flexibility in power delivery and the ability for the vehicle to run in all-electric EV mode. The hybrid control system automatically switches between parallel and EV modes according to the driving situation, giving both powerful acceleration and fuel efficiency. While performance is at a level typical for a 3.0-litre V6 petrol model, the RX 500h’s hybrid system can deliver around a 20% improvement in fuel economy.

The driver experiences powerful performance and drivability characterised by a direct, “torqueful” feel with minimal delay between pressing the accelerator and drive force being delivered to all four wheels.

    Battery technology

The RX 500h uses a new low-resistance nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery unit that delivers high output while supporting fuel economy. It has a bipolar structure and adopts new high-output components. It is installed beneath the car’s rear seat, avoiding loss of cabin or load space and is quieter, thanks to refinement of its air cooling system.

    DIRECT4

Power delivery is controlled by DIRECT4, an exclusive new Lexus drive force technology that is also featured in the new RZ 450e battery electric SUV.

This intelligent all-wheel drive system uses a separate electric motor and inverter to constantly balance the power and torque between the front and rear axles in any driving situation. It automatically and seamlessly adjusts the level the drive force between the two axles – more quickly and precisely than any mechanical system could.

DIRECT4 communicates a better feel between the road and steering wheel and delivers improved handling stability and driving dynamics at high speed. Importantly for the RX 500h, it also enhances ride comfort with instant torque that helps control body movement.

Its benefits are experienced in different driving scenarios:

    • Starting off – drive force is securely delivered to all four wheels
    • Straight line driving – vehicle remains steady at all times
    • Entering a bend – change of direction is smooth
    • Steering through a bend – steering provides good feedback
    • Accelerating out of a bend – easy for the driver to trace a faithful line
    • Exiting a bend – confident, direct acceleration

The balance of front/rear drive torque is adjusted to achieve ideal performance, with the front/rear balance adjusting between 100:0 and 20:80, according to the driving scenario. When pulling away and in straight-line driving the system controls the ratio at between 60:40 and 40:60, suppressing pitching and giving a direct acceleration feel. When cornering, the system uses information such as vehicle speed and steering angle to determine the drive force distribution and secure handling stability. Drive force is weighted towards the front axle (70:30 to 50:50) at the start of a turn, then more biased to the rear (50:50 to 20:80) when exiting the corner, giving good traction and maintaining stability.

RX 450h+: the first plug-in hybrid electric RX

    • 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid electric powertrain
    • Output: 309 DIN hp/227 kW
    • 0-100 km/h: 6.5 sec *
    • CO2: 24-26 g/km *
    • Fuel consumption: 1.1-1.2 l/100 km *

The plug-in hybrid system deployed in the RX 450h+ is the same as that which Lexus debuted to great success in the all-new NX.

It features a four-cylinder Atkinson cycle 2.5-litre hybrid engine and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 18.1 kWh capacity. An additional rear electric motor enables Lexus E-Four full-time all-wheel drive.

While it offers similar power to the outgoing RX 450h, it produces more torque and faster acceleration. Total output is 309 DIN hp, which is expected to enable 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.5 seconds.

The battery’s size and capacity and Lexus’s electrification know-how combine to deliver significantly lower fuel consumption and emissions. Lexus’ target CO2 emissions (WLTP combined cycle) are below 26 g/km with fuel economy of less than 1.2 l/100 km. An EV driving range of more than 65 kilometres is expected, with all-electric driving possible at speeds up to 130 km/h.

The Lexus plug-in hybrid system offers a critical benefit that sets the RX 450h+ apart from its rivals. When the battery charge is depleted, the vehicle switches seamlessly to its self-charging hybrid system, maintaining high fuel and emissions efficiency. This is in contrast to most other manufacturers’ systems, where the powertrain defaults to its internal combustion engine.

Lexus expects the RX 450h+ will be its core RX model, a logical step-up for many of its current RX 450h customers and consequently the best-selling RX in Western and Central Europe.

    Hybrid system drive modes

EV electric running is the default mode – the car will run on electric power to the limit of is range, regardless of how hard the driver uses the accelerator. With the contribution of the lithium-ion battery maximised and more power coming from the electric motors, driving feels effortless yet refined.

The driver also has the option of Auto EV/HV mode, which automatically brings the hybrid engine into play when extra power is needed, then returning to EV operation immediately afterwards. The driver can also select HV mode to maximise efficient operation, automatically maintaining the battery’s state of charge.

Battery charging mode starts the engine to restore the battery charge level, helping ensure more battery power is available when EV driving is required, for example prior to entering a zero or low emissions zone.

    Sequential Shiftmatic transmission

The driver can use paddle controls to operate the Shiftmatic transmission in a series of shift ranges, selecting “S” with the shift lever. This delivers engine braking force in six steps with a shift feel similar to a manual transmission. A low shift range enables high engine speed control for sharp acceleration response, increasing driver rewards.

    Hybrid system components

The plug-in hybrid system uses a new transaxle that achieves a top-level balance of fuel economy and driving performance. The inclusion of a rear transaxle, with E-Four all-wheel drive, adds to driver confidence with stable performance assured in day-to-day driving.

The front transaxle is a compact unit thanks to a multi-axis design that located the electric motor/generators side by side instead of in line with each. The rear transaxle as a three-axis, two-stage reduction system, which reduces weight and operating losses. The gear train is engineered to be quieter and to give good pulling-away and acceleration performance on low-friction, slippery road surfaces.

The power control unit (PCU) is also new, designed to handle the higher output of the PHEV system while still supporting efficient fuel consumption. It is mounted in the same way as in the full hybrid electric system in the RX 350h, and is only slightly larger in size. It includes a boost converter, while the DC/DC converter is relocated beneath the rear seat.

The new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery is compact and housed beneath the cabin floor, avoiding intrusion in cabin and load space. Its reliable performance and high output – qualities secured through Lexus’ long experience in battery technology – are central to the car’s good EV driving range. Using a boost converter increases the voltage, so the hybrid system can draw more power from the battery.

The RX 450h+ is fitted with a 6.6 kw/h on-board charger. With a 230 V/32 A connection, a full battery recharge can be accomplished in about 2.5 hours.

RX 350h: efficient fourth generation self-charging hybrid

    • 2.5-litre self-charging hybrid electric powertrain
    • Output: 250 DIN hp/184 kW
    • 0-100 km/h: 7.9 sec *
    • CO2: 142-149 g/km *
    • Fuel consumption: 6.3-6.6 l/100 km *

The new RX 350h is characterised by the improved smoothness and efficiency of its fourth-generation self-charging hybrid electric system. This 2.5-litre petrol drivetrain provides 250 DIN hp and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 7.9 seconds, performance comparable with the current RX 450h, while at the same time producing lower emissions.

It benefits from the same programme of hybrid component improvements featured in the RX 450h+, including a new hybrid transaxle with a more compact design, lighter weight (~22% mass reduction) and reduced friction losses and a smaller (~ 9% volume reduction) and more efficient PCU. It is equipped with e-Four electric all-wheel drive as standard.

The RX 350h is a strong alternative to competitor models powered by small-displacement engines and ideal for customers who prioritise comfort and efficiency.

    Battery technology

Like the RX 500h, the RX 350h uses a new low-resistance nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery unit, designed to give good drivability and a high level of both output and fuel economy. Compared to the battery featured in the previous RX 450h, it has fewer cells (216 vs 240), but delivers equivalent output. These are arranged in a more compact, integrated unit, replacing the previous three-part unit, installed beneath the car’s rear seat.

    RX 350

    • 2.4-litre turbocharged gasoline engine with eight-speed automatic transmission
    • Output: 279 DIN hp/205 kW
    • Max. torque: 430 Nm
    • 0-100 km/h: 7.6 sec *
    • CO2: 197 g/km *
    • Fuel consumption: 8.8 l/100 km *

Offered exclusively in Eastern Europe, the new RX 350 is powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged four cylinder gasoline unit that develops 279 DIN hp (249 DIN hp in certain markets) and 430 Nm of torque, which is substantially higher performance than previously. Its strength is matched by the rapid response of a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission with shorter ratios.

A brand-new, electronically controlled, permanent all-wheel drive system ensures power is effectively transmitted in low-grip conditions such as gravel tracks. Torque allocation between the front and rear axles can be adjusted from 75:25 to 50:50 according to the driving conditions.

    MULTIMEDIA AND CONNECTIVITY

    New Lexus Link Multimedia system

The new RX delivers advanced connectivity that is both faster and more stable, providing the latest multimedia technology, “always connected” services and the convenience of over-the-air updates. With smartphone, navigation, vehicle commands and multimedia functions, there are about 100 ways for the driver to interact with their vehicle.

A 14-inch touchscreen, one of the largest in the RX’s class, is fitted as standard. As well as the anti-glare screen there are physical buttons to access the most frequently used functions. Graphics are presented in HD for excellent visibility in all lighting conditions, while the system’s CPU operates 3.6 times faster than that in the previous system, giving a much quicker response to user inputs.

In Western and Central Europe, all RX versions are equipped with an embedded navigation system.  In Eastern European markets, customers can choose the 14-inch touchscreen without navigation. The car’s DCM (Data Communication Module) provides always-on connectivity, with access to live information on traffic events, accidents and road conditions. New RX models sold in western and central Europe come with a four-year data subscription package as standard; there are no additional charges and no phone pairing is required to access the cloud-based services.

The DCM also allows software updates for the car’s multimedia and safety systems to be conveniently delivered over-the-air, avoiding the need for a service appointment.

    Audio system

The standard audio system for the new RX is a premium 12-speaker package that is engineered for smoothly resonant high tones and rich, crisp low tones, to give a realistic live performance atmosphere. The array includes a 20 cm box subwoofer, set in the side of the luggage deck.

The amplifier enables playback of high-resolution sound sources that contain more audio information than a standard compact disc. Compressed sound sources are converted to produce playback quality equivalent to high-resolution audio.

    Mark Levinson Surround Sound system

Lexus’ exclusive audio partner Mark Levinson has produced a new 21-speaker Premium Surround Sound system, designed and engineered specifically for the RX. It is optimised for the car’s internal architecture and takes into account any transmission of external noise that occurs during driving.

The system uses Mark Levinson’s Pure Play concept to produce an accurate, full-bodied sound stage, with sound reproduction that is as close to the original as possible. The design brings the speakers as close as possible to the listeners’ ears, to there is the least obstruction in the flow of sound.

    Audio streaming

The multimedia system includes a new audio streaming function, via a Lexus-approved service provider. After setting up their personal account, the customer can stream the music of their choice, without having to link to their smartphone.

    Smartphone integration

Easy smartphone integration is provided as standard – wireless for Apple CarPlay and with a wired connection for Android Auto. A wireless charging tray is available, with charging performance that’s 50% stronger than before.

    Connections

A USB-A port is provided for high-resolution audio playback, located in the front console box and illuminated for easy access. There two USB-C charging ports on the front console, two on the console’s rear end panel and a further one inside the console box.

    My Setting

The vehicle can store the preferred multimedia settings for up to three different users, including audio and navigation functions. This is in addition to personalised settings for the driving position, cabin illumination, meter display and Lexus Safety System + functions.

    Lexus Link App

RX owners can use the Lexus Link app on their smartphone for a number of useful functions, including remote locking and unlocking of their car – useful, for example, if they want the vehicle to be used for a delivery drop-off. It can also activate the air conditioning system to warm or cool the cabin prior to a starting a journey.

On the RX 450h+, Lexus Link can help the driver programme charging operations and check the battery level.

Lexus Link can also be used to organise servicing and maintenance appointments and to monitor the owner’s hybrid driving performance.

    LIFE ON BOARD

    • Lexus Omotenashi principles deliver highest levels of comfort and ease of use
    • Driver’s instrumentation designed for quick, intuitive use, true to the Tazuna cockpit concept
    • An even quieter and more refined cabin environment

    Omotenashi hospitality

Lexus’ Omotenashi hospitality is the basic principle defining how the RX cares for all occupants, making them feel welcome, safe and comfortable at all times. This extends from a welcoming illumination sequence as you approach the vehicle and the animation graphics on the multimedia and multi-information displays as you prepare to drive off. Once the driver’s key has been registered, the sequence can be personalised with their name.

Meters, touch tracer switches and head-up display

The driver can customise the RX’s meter display to suit their preference, prioritising the tachometer, hybrid system indicator or speedometer. The design also changes in line with the drive mode that has been selected (Normal, Eco or Sport). F SPORT models have an exclusive racing-style read-out that adds to the model’s performance-focused feel.

Using technology first applied in the new Lexus NX, the RX has touch tracer switches on the steering wheel. A key part of the Tazuna cockpit concept, these can be used to change or update the contents of the multi-information display, without the driver having to look away from the road. They can be customised to operate the driver’s preferred functions, with details of operation confirmed in the head-up display or multi-information display. Although the switches use touch sensors, they have the haptic “click” feel of physical controls.

The colour head-up display has three modes showing different levels of information: the full mode includes the status of Lexus Safety System + safety and driver assistance features; standard mode summarises key information at the lower edge of the display; and minimum mode shows only the speed. It can be adjusted for position, rotation and brightness, with details saved on models with driver-personalised memory settings.

    Heating and ventilation

The RX uses a new air conditioning unit that is more energy efficient and more compact and lightweight, helping Lexus realise a slimmer instrument panel.

The RX 450h+ uses an energy-saving heat pump which draws thermal energy from air outside the car to heat the cabin, so there is less impact on the car’s EV driving range when using the air conditioning system. It also has a humidity sensor, to help prevent windscreen misting.

On all RX models, the Lexus Climate Concierge ensures each occupant enjoys their ideal temperature, co-ordinating operation of the front seat heaters, heated steering wheel and triple-zone climate control. Lexus’ S-FLOW control detects which seats are occupied and adjusts air conditioning performance accordingly, saving fuel while ensuring those on board are comfortable.

Using the Lexus Link smartphone app, RX owners can operate their vehicle’s climate control system remotely, warming up or cooling their vehicle before starting a journey.

    Seating

The front seats have been redesigned to offer easy access, excellent support and heating and ventilation. Using a “deep hung” construction for the seat upholstery and a new global architecture seat frame improves body holding performance and the seat sides have a concave shape that improves support for the occupant’s waist. The shape of the seat cushion has been revised so that it is comfortable for a wider range of body shapes and sizes. Comfort is further increased on Luxury grade models with an increase in the range of front cushion extension, and elimination of any gap between the front of the seat and main part of the cushion.

The integrated seat heaters now provide warmth across the entire seats rather than at specific points and the memory system for power seat adjustment has a new control which provides simultaneous adjustment of the slide, lift and recline position, giving quicker operation and avoiding any uncomfortable knee contact or torso compression.

The easy access system has also been revised, adding an automatic lift-down function in addition to the previous slide away and return, making it easier to enter and exit the front seats.

According to model grade, the rear seats have manual or power reclining and folding functions and optional integrated heating and ventilation.

    Ambient lighting

An expression of the Lexus Omotenashi hospitality, the Lexus Mood Selector allows the RX’s ambient interior lighting to be adjusted to suit the mood or the drive from a palette of 64 colours and 14 bespoke themes that evoke different emotions and atmospheres.

The indirect lighting is featured across the instrument panel, the door switches, footwells and door pockets and creates an embracing feel when travelling at night.

    SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE

    • Latest generation of Lexus Safety System +, with even greater functionality to detect accident risks and support the driver in avoiding them
    • Optional Extended Safety Package featuring Lane Change Assistance, Front Cross-Traffic Alert and Emergency Steering Assist with Active Support
    • Lexus’ e-latch with Safe Exit Assist

The new RX benefits from next-level active safety and driver assistance systems featured in the latest generation of Lexus Safety System + with upgraded functions and increased scope for accident risk detection and prevention. Moreover, their functionality can be kept up-to-date with convenient over-the-air software updates, with no need for the customer to take their vehicle to Lexus workshop.

    Pre-Collision System

Further expansion of the Pre-Collision System enables it to now detect motorcycles during daytime, and other objects in the car’s path. It can also recognise head-on collision risks with oncoming traffic or crossing pedestrians when making a left or right turn at a junction.

Its detection response is quicker, and it now provides Emergency Steering Assist. When the driver initiates an evasive steering manoeuvre to avoid another vehicle or obstacle in the RX’s traffic lane, this system provides extra steering torque to help maintain vehicle stability and prevent the car from leaving its lane.

    Adaptive Cruise Control

Enhancements have been made to the Adaptive Cruise Control so that it now more quickly recognises traffic cutting in in front and, in conjunction with upgrades to Lane Trace Assist, follows a more natural line through bends. The ACC has also been expanded to respond to more signs and commands, including warning signs and STOP signs.

    Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) improves safety and reduces the burden on the driver when travelling at lower speeds in urban traffic. It provides three functions: Obstacle Anticipation Assist, Deceleration Assist and Steering Assist.

Using the car’s front camera, Obstacle Anticipation Assist will spot a hazard such as pedestrians about to cross the road or walking along the road margin, cyclists and parked cars. If there is a collision risk, it will provide braking and steering to avoid the obstacle, while keeping within the traffic lane. It differs from the RX’s Pre-Collision System in recognising an accident risk earlier and initiating assistance so that the risk does not increase.

Deceleration Assist supports smooth slowing of the car when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator, for example when approaching another vehicle or a bend ahead*. If the system determines that normal engine braking will not slow the car sufficiently, it applies extra conventional/regenerative braking.

Steering Assist helps keep the vehicle in its traffic lane when driving through a bend. The system will detect road markings for a curve ahead, calculate the radius and adjust the steering assistance for a correct line. If the steering angle is in insufficient, extra steering assistance is provided to make it easier for the driver to turn the wheel in the right direction. In straight-line driving, the system reduces the level of steering assistance, making it easier to keep the car in a neutral position.

    *At speeds above 20 km/h.

    Driver Monitor

The Driver Monitor uses a camera mounted above the steering wheel to constantly check the condition of the driver, recognising if they have become distracted, or lost concentration through tiredness or being unwell. If the driver fails to respond to alerts, the system will bring the car to a gentle standstill and call for help.

Other Lexus Safety System + features

The Lexus Safety System + package also equips the car with Automatic High-beam or Adaptive High-beam System, Lane Tracing Assist with Lane Departure Alert and Road Sign Assist.

    Extended Safety Package

While Lexus Safety System + is fitted as standard on all European models, owners of higher-grade models can specify an Extended Safety Package option.

It introduces Lane Change Assistance (LCA) which provides automatic lane change steering, when the turn indicators are used in highway driving.

It also adds Front Cross-Traffic Alert which uses radar monitoring to detect and warn the driver of traffic approaching from either side when emerging from a junction at low speed. An animation of the direction of the approaching vehicle is shown in the colour head-up display and if the system judges the driver is about to pull out, it will prompt them to slow down with a warning display and buzzer.

The Extended Safety Package also includes Emergency Steering Assist with Active support. With this additional Active support function, if the driver doesn’t steer the car in avoidance after the pre-collision warning, the system will apply gentle braking and steer around the hazard, while keeping the car within its lane.

Lexus e-latch with Safe Exit Assist

The RX’s e-latch electronic door release system is linked to the car’s Blind Spot Monitor to provide a Lexus-exclusive Safe Exit Assist function. This prevents the door from being opened if cars or cyclists are detected, approaching from the rear.

Lexus estimates this system can help prevent more than 95% of the accidents caused by inadvertent door opening.

    Advanced driver support

Lexus introduces many advanced human-centred technologies in the new RX to enhance comfort, convenience and life on board, reinforcing the spirit of omotenashi hospitality.

The RX can be specified with a digital rear-view mirror which gives the driver a wide, unobstructed field of vision, using real-time images from the car’s reversing camera.

For easier driving in confined spaces, the Digital Panoramic View Monitor uses cameras to capture a live 360° view around and a pre-recorded view under the car (the cameras now benefit from automatic cleaners). It also creates a virtual 3D image of the RX, showing the vehicle as if seen from above.

An Advanced Park system is also available, which provides automated control of the steering, shift operation and braking. It uses the car’s array of four cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors to gain an all-round picture of the immediate surroundings. It will also recognise up to three regularly used parking spots.

    Passive safety

A full complement of SRS airbags is provided in the RX, including front centre and front passenger seat cushion airbags. The vehicle’s robust structure is engineered to safely absorb and channel impact forces in a collision while maintaining the integrity of the cabin. Performance has been improved with enlarged front side members; the addition of second member below the side members; and a new cross member in the floor, connecting the centre pillar and transmission tunnel. The new high-tensile steel frame at the rear of the vehicle gives better performance in a rear impact.

  • Meet the all-new Lexus RZ, the luxury brand’s first battery EV

    2023 Lexus RZ 450e - Front Angle

Lexus is proud to unveil details of the all-new 2023 RZ 450e, the luxury brand’s first global Battery EV (BEV).

Since the launch of the RX400h in 2005, Lexus has been a pioneer of electrification within the luxury market. As with the first RX hybrid model, Lexus engineers have imbued the brand’s hybrid vehicles with an excellent driving identity and environmental performance. Under the ‘Lexus Electrified’ vision, Lexus aims to invigorate all guests’ authentic love for driving exhilaration, and in doing so, will broaden its Lexus Electrified portfolio of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) products to exceed the needs and expectations of a more diverse set of luxury buyers.

The portfolio expansion will move Lexus toward another essential goal: The realization of a sustainable global society. Lexus will contribute to achieving a carbon-neutral society by offering a full lineup of BEVs in all categories by 2030. Five years later, Lexus seeks to attain 100% BEV sales globally. To meet these challenges, Lexus will rigorously improve its products, along with the expertise of its personnel, by repeating “drive and fix” development at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama (TTCS), Lexus’ new operational base.

“We believe that Lexus, an established luxury automaker, should continue pursuing the creation of exciting cars while respecting nature and the global environment to achieve a carbon-neutral society,” said Takashi Watanabe, chief engineer, ‘Lexus Electrified,’ Lexus International. “The RZ has been developed with the aim of creating a uniquely Lexus BEV that feels secure to ride in, is pleasing to the touch, and is exhilarating to drive. DIRECT4, the core technology of ‘Lexus Electrified,’ is all-wheel drive system that achieves quick and linear response according to driver input. We will continue to take on the challenge of providing customers with new experiences and a uniquely Lexus BEV driving experience.”

As Lexus’ first global BEV model, the all-new RZ marks Lexus’ transition into a BEV-centered brand, and it embodies the unique Lexus vehicle design and driving experience made available through advanced, electrified technology. The utilization of a BEV-specific platform (e-TNGA), as well as a lightweight and highly rigid body, has enhanced the fundamental performance of the vehicle by achieving optimal weight distribution through ideal placement of the battery and motor. In addition, the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system and the adoption of a new steering control and available Steer by Wire system enable vehicle control that is more true to the driver’s intention.

The exterior design expresses the seamless acceleration and dynamic torque-filled performance specific to BEVs. Lexus’ identifiable spindle grille is replaced by a BEV Spindle Body. The new front bumper design focuses on aerodynamic efficiencies, optimized proportions and style, versus serving the cooling and exhaust needs of an internal combustion engine. This styling evolution ushers in a new Lexus aesthetic and establishes a new design direction for BEV offerings.

Within the spindle body is a minimalist, spacious interior focused on amplifying a sustainable mobility message and Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) through its application of mindfully sourced materials. Though simplistic, the space is luxurious thanks to its crafted touches and advanced technologies. In addition, the cabin features a standard panoramic roof which visually opens the space, while passenger comfort is improved by a highly efficient heating system featuring a Lexus-first radiant heater.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE “LEXUS DRIVING SIGNATURE” THROUGH ELECTRIFICATION

The “Lexus Driving Signature” (LDS) is a uniquely Lexus driving experience that aims to achieve predictable, linear response according to the driver’s intentions. In the RZ, the high-precision motor torque control and optimal battery and motor placement help to achieve ideal weight distribution and high response.

This concept is called “The Natural” and is based on the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system that controls front and rear drive force according to driving and road surface conditions. It achieves driving performance where the vehicle directly responds according to the driver’s input, taking the “Lexus Driving Signature” to an even higher level.

DIRECT4: SUPPORTS A MORE ENGAGING DRIVING PERFORMANCE

DIRECT4 and the newly developed high-output electronic axle (eAxle) motor continuously controls the drive force of the four wheels with high precision. It works according to the ground contact load of the vehicle regardless of road surface and driving conditions to achieve an exhilarating driving experience in line with the driver’s intention.

The DIRECT4 distribution control uses wheel vehicle speed, acceleration and steering angle sensor information to control front-to-rear drive force ratio distribution between 100:0 and 0:100. This contributes to improved start-up acceleration, handling stability and low power consumption. The system uses an approximate front-to-rear drive force ratio distribution between 60:40 and 40:60 to minimize vehicle pitch during launch and straight-line acceleration, thereby achieving a direct acceleration feel. Vital information such as cornering speed and steering angle help to optimize drive force distribution according to various driving conditions and helps attain excellent handling stability. When the steering wheel is turned, drive force is biased to the front wheels (distributing drive force between 75:25 and 50:50) so RZ responds nimbly and provides excellent steering feel. When exiting a corner, torque distribution to the rear wheels is further increased (between 50:50 and 20:80) to ensure ample traction while controlling vehicle pitch. For RZ, engineers have achieved a refined driving feel by orchestrating the seamless operation of their accumulated electrification and dynamic vehicle movement control technologies.

The newly developed eAxle fully integrates the motor, transaxle and inverter within a compact unit to benefit cruise range, spacious interior and excellent design. The front eAxle is packaged with a short front/rear system layout, while the rear eAxle features a low-profile layout contributing to increased interior and cargo space. In addition, the use of a high-efficiency inverter having an element in the rear, contributes to an increase in cruise range.

A new pressurization unit enables coordinated front and rear regenerative braking through independent front and rear hydraulic control. The new braking system aims to provide seamless, direct and controlled braking under the direction of the Lexus Driving Signature. Based on Lexus’ hybrid electric technology experience and achievements over the years, the regenerative braking system improves regenerative energy efficiency to increase cruise range, while enhancing brake feel. Stable vehicle posture is achieved by optimizing the distribution of braking force to the front and rear wheels in response to the amount of braking by the driver. Furthermore, ergonomic brake pedal pads are used for easy pedal changes and pedal depression.

AVAILABLE STEER BY WIRE WITH INNOVATIVE STEERING CONTROL ELEVATE THE HUMAN-MACHINE CONNECTION

Available in the U.S. at a future date, the Lexus-first Steer by Wire system enables the electronic exchange of steering and road surface information between the advanced steering control and tires via electrical signals, not mechanical linkage.

The control’s steering angle is set at approximately 150 degrees, thus greatly reducing the driver’s workload and eliminating the need for hand-over-hand operation at intersections, U-turns, parking, winding roads and other driving situations. Unhindered by a sizeable standard steering wheel, designers crafted the steering control’s compact shape and lowered the instrument meter’s placement to encourage driver engagement and environmental awareness.

A cockpit space encouraging even more engagement with the car has been achieved by minimizing driver eye movement during driving and naturally drawing the driver’s eyes forward. With Steer by Wire enabling the electronic exchange of steering and road surface information between the steering wheel and tires via electrical signals, Lexus focused on the quality and transmission speed of important driving information. The system achieves maneuverable and confidence inspiring performance through precise judgment, by blocking out unnecessary vibrations from the tires and brakes, only relaying vital driving information such as road information to the driver.

When Lane Tracing Assist is activated, the wheels are controlled as needed, allowing for gentle steering and vehicle movement. Furthermore, in addition to the vehicle’s overall maneuverability, the system provides nimble and agile performance on winding roads and high-speed stability on the highways by optimizing the steering gear ratio according to vehicle condition.

    IMPROVED FUNDAMENTALS, ENLIVENED PERFORMANCE

RZ utilizes a Lexus-first, dedicated BEV platform (e-TNGA) to significantly evolve the vehicle performance and provide the exhilarating joy of driving. The platform offers stability and ride comfort by mounting the battery under the vehicle floor creating a low center of gravity. The body is strengthened by reinforcing the radiator support area and adding a V-shaped brace for excellent handling performance. In addition, the tow bar and fender braces improve steering response, while the reinforcement in the lower back section improves rear tracking.

Laser screw welding, structural adhesives and laser peening welding technologies are proactively used to join the body frame to improve handling stability and ride comfort. The addition of a double ring structure and a highly rigid foaming agent prevents distortion to reduce deformation of the rear luggage opening.

Up front, RZ rides atop MacPherson strut type suspension, while its rear uses a trailing arm double wishbone configuration. For the first time, Lexus uses Frequency Reactive Dampers (FRD*1 II), a frequency-sensitive absorber that alters the dampening force on the extension stroke in response to road surface frequency input. The FRD setup gives a high level of handling stability without compromising ride comfort. With FRD and optimized dedicated BEV platform, key Lexus Driving Signature traits such as the precise control of sprung weight, along with natural posture changes, a tactile steering feel and the linear responses of steering, braking and acceleration operations are enabled.

A QUIET SPACE HAVING A SPECIAL LEXUS SOUND

To bring the exhilaration of driving through sound, Lexus engineers created expressive in-cabin sounds to convey the exhilaration of driving. Engineers matched sound frequencies to the vehicle’s speed and sound levels during dynamic actions such as acceleration. In addition, the underfloor battery functions as a sound barrier and the entire perimeter of the hood opening is sealed to eliminate noise caused by turbulent airflow. Unwanted noise is also suppressed through the use of front/rear seat acoustic glass, and a new weatherstripping cross section creates quiet, conversation-friendly space, even when driving at high speeds.

A BEV SYSTEM INFORMED LEXUS’ HEV DEVELOPMENT

Lexus developed a system that maximizes the advantages of the dedicated platform by using technology and knowhow derived from the brand’s hybrid vehicle development. The use of BEV-exclusive, high-capacity batteries and silicon carbide power semiconductor elements in the inverter*2, as well as the incorporation of low-loss technologies cultivated in the development of HEVs, contribute to extending the single-charge cruise range of the vehicle. The current U.S. manufacturer-estimated range is up to 225*3 miles with 18-inch tires.

A DESIGN THAT PURSUES A UNIQUE LEXUS BEV IDENTITY AND PROPORTIONS BORN FROM A DYNAMIC DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The all-new RZ continues the design language of the next generation of Lexus by pursuing a unique identity and proportions born from a dynamic driving experience. The design concept is “Seamless E-Motion,” expressing seamless acceleration and a dynamic sense of torque unique to a BEV. Furthermore, the elimination of the internal combustion engine has changed the functional requirements of the front end and challenged Lexus to create a new visual identity through the adoption of a “spindle body” design.

The interior is inspired by the BEV’s dynamic performance, presenting a clean and nimble image. A sense of refinement and high-quality craftsmanship exists, even within a space pursuing functional essence. Based the innovative tazuna concept, the cabin welcomes its passengers with an airy feeling and intuitive controls specifically oriented around the driver. As such, the tazuna inspiration seamlessly connects human with machine and emphasizes concentration on driving.

    SHAPED FOR AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

RZ’s spindle shape design generates a distinctive roof spoiler to suppress aerodynamic force acting on the body in a crosswind. This ensures a more stable driving feel. The center of the roof is shaped to allow air to flow smoothly from the sloped rear glass surface to the rear of the vehicle. The ducktail shape on the end of the trunk reduces aerodynamic drag by balancing the aft air flow. In addition, the generated downforce contributes to a stable driving feel. An undercover is used to flatten the underbody to reduce aerodynamic drag.

Having no engine to cool results in a low hood design and minimal front grille opening. The grille uses a grille shutter to improve aerodynamic efficiency. When cooling air is not required, the grille shutter is closed to reduce air resistance.

The seamless acceleration and dynamic performance of BEVs is expressed in the exterior design.

In addition, the cabin features an available panoramic roof which visually opens the space, while passenger comfort is improved by a highly efficient heating system featuring a Lexus-first radiant heater.

From the side, the front fenders seemingly wrap around the wheels and tires, then flow rearward to express a powerful forward-moving momentum. The strong three-dimensional shape over the rear fenders emphasizes the tires’ width and communicate the dynamic performance image of DIRECT4. In addition, the flowing contrast of the doors’ sculpted shapes aims to achieve a captivating and scintillating surface.

The rear of the BEV features a clean and simple horizontal design matched to hips highlighting the wide stance; it is a look that accentuates the RZ’s torque-filled performance identity. A new spelled out LEXUS logo (as first seen on the recently launched NX and LX) resides on the horizontal rear combination lamps. The lowered center portion of the red lens accentuates the logo type and emphasizes a sharp look.

Five exterior colors are also available, including “Ether,” which evokes the nimble driving performance of BEVs. Furthermore, an available bi-tone color scheme lays solid black from the front of the spindle body to the upper hood and roof.

INSIDE: AN EXPANSIVE AND MINIMALISTIC, WELCOMING SPACE

The RZ’s cabin is a minimalist, yet airy and maximally appointed luxury environment. The flowing shape from the doors integrates with the low positioned instrument panel. The door trim and console passing between the driver and passenger seat creates a clean, wide-open feel. In addition, the ultra-suede door trim ornamentation, seats, and upper wood-grain console create a refined omotenashi, or anticipatory hospitality, space.

The long wheelbase provides a spacious rear seat space with a couple distance of 1000 mm (39.3 in). In addition, the rearward peaked cabin silhouette allows for ample rear headroom providing a sense of spaciousness for the passengers. The available panoramic roof further lends a sense of wide openness and front-to-rear expansiveness.

Two types of seat materials are used, including Ultrasuede, an upholstery material that pursues a sense of warm refinement using 30%-bio-based sustainable materials. The combination of a clean, modern space and simple surfaces with a focus on texture, expresses a welcoming sense of freedom.

The front cockpit, based on the tazuna concept, advances Lexus’ human-centered philosophy. Tazuna represents the reins riders use to control horses. With steering wheel switches that are synced with the available Head-Up Display (HUD), drivers can control functions such as navigation, audio, and drive mode select while concentrating on driving.

Drivers and passengers can experience three interior colors options, including Orage, Palomino and Dapple Gray/Black. In addition, the world’s first Shadowy illumination changes the shade of light projected on to the door trim ornament when the doors are opened and closed, adding new flair to the interior space.

ADVANCED SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES BASED ON A HUMAN-CENTERED APPROACH

The RZ uses the latest Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 set of driving aids, including standard Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert and Emergency Driving Stop System.

LSS+ 3.0 on the 2023 RZ includes some additional features offered with the available driver monitor system.

    • Pre-Collision System [PCS]: The driver monitor system checks the driver’s condition, and if it is determined that the driver is distracted or drowsy, judged by how often the driver looks away from the road, the system will provide an earlier timing alert and braking to help avoid a collision and/or possible damage.
    • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control [DRCC] (with full-speed follow function): While enabled, the driver monitor system will check to see if the driver is attentive, and will judge the distance from the preceding vehicle, adjusting based on the distance (time) setting (four levels available) and automatically brake when too close.
    • Lane Departure Alert [LDA]: When the driver monitor system is engaged, the system will detect the driver’s level of alertness, and, if it determines the driver is inattentive, the system activates either the alert or the steering assist at an earlier time than usual.
    • Emergency Driving Stop System [EDSS]: When Lane Trace Assist (LTA) is activated, if the driver monitor system determines that the driver becomes unable to continue driving the vehicle, the system will decelerate the vehicle and stop within the current lane to help avoid a collision or reduce the impact of a collision. To do this, the system first warns the surroundings by flashing the hazard lamps while gently decelerating the vehicle until the vehicle comes to a full stop.

Available advanced Park with remote function expands support for parallel parking. In addition to conventional back-up parking, forward-facing parking is now supported, enabling forward-facing/back-up exit.

Additional driver and passenger comforts include radiant heaters1 to comfortably warm the passenger’s knees while working with the air conditioner to provide a warm temperature at a reduced rate of battery consumption.

Both driver and passengers can enjoy the wide-open space created by the panoramic roof which is equipped with a Lexus-first, available dimming function, which instantly reduces the amount of light entering the cabin area.

  • Lexus unveils hydrogen-powered ROV concept

    2021-lexus-rov-concept

Lexus has revealed a new ROV (Recreational Off-highway Vehicle) Concept, a unique hydrogen-powered vehicle offering near zero-emissions driving combined with extreme off-road capability. It reflects a commitment by Lexus to ensure exhilarating driving can co-exist with a carbon-free society centred on responsible mobility.

Adventurous looks inspired by bold Lexus design

For the Lexus ROV Concept, the design team developed a vehicle that would look good in all kinds of natural environments. The car bears all the true hallmarks of an off-road vehicle with its exposed suspension, protective cage and chunky off-road tyres for driving along muddy tracks. Dimensions are: 3,120 mm (length), 1,725 mm (width), 1,800 mm (height).

With the Lexus’ “human centred” philosophy as their starting point, the design team wanted to create the kind of vehicle people would expect from a luxury carmaker yet without losing the rugged performance of an ROV. They designed a body that could protect passengers, incorporate the iconic Lexus signature grille and preserve enough travel for the front suspension. In addition, the front fenders were conceived to offer protection against any stray rocks and mud.

The suspension cover, connected to the rear hydrogen fuel tank, protects functional parts as well as conveying the sense of durability inherited from Lexus SUVs. The dark bronze paint is carefully crafted along with a lightweight body and suspension designed for both comfort and fun off-road driving. Lexus ‘L’-motif front and rear lights and the rear LEXUS badge express the latest Lexus design language.

Inside, based on the Tazuna concept, it has a simple meter that instantly reads the information the driver needs while the driver concentrates on driving.

Feel the Lexus quality and craftsmanship

The new concept showcases outstanding build quality with the luxury feel of Lexus craftsmanship in both the interior and exterior, as never been seen before in a ROV. Luxury details include a leather steering wheel and a sculpted shift knob and seats which feature suspension elements that smooth bumps out of the ride. The seats are upholstered in hard-wearing synthetic leather. For demanding off-road driving, the first Lexus hydrogen ICE will meet all the carmaker’s stringent requirements for QDR (Quietness, Durability, Reliability).

    Clean yet exciting hydrogen power

While tackling its carbon neutrality goals, Lexus is passionate about the enjoyment of driving cars. This ROV Concept embodies the exciting sound of an ICE and the responsive rise in torque that comes from the fast combustion speed of hydrogen, which Lexus believe is highly compatible with the ROV.

This hydrogen powered ROV concept is the result of Lexus’ desire to preserve true off-road pleasure in tomorrow’s low carbon society. To power this off-road fun, the 1.0-litre hydrogen engine works just like a petrol engine, but with a high-pressure tank for compressed hydrogen which is delivered precisely by a direct hydrogen injector. Importantly, Lexus’ new hydrogen engine produces close to zero emissions, with a negligible amount of engine oil burned during driving.

Developed with its own ‘Lexus Driving Signature’

With a lightweight body composed of a strong pipe frame and suspension that boasts a large amount of travel, the driver will enjoy the car’s natural movements, the distinctive ‘Lexus Driving Signature’ and the possibility to go anywhere they desire. Designed for dynamic and comfortable driving, the agile design and the responsiveness of the hydrogen engine make the Lexus ROV a fun vehicle to drive with exceptional off-road capability.

Spiros Fotinos, Head of Lexus Europe, comments: “The Lexus ROV is our response to the growing passion for the outdoors and adventurous spirit of luxury consumers. As a concept, it fuses our desire to also develop lifestyle-oriented products with our ongoing research into new technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality. As well as delivering a concept that is thrilling to drive, it has near zero emissions thanks to its hydrogen powered engine.”

Bespoke Build offers numerous ways for Lexus guests to customize the LC 500’s wheels, spoiler, roof and exterior/interior trim and colors. Certain customization options, including the carbon fiber roof and all-new Manhattanhenge interior color will be exclusive to Bespoke Build, while others like the carbon fiber air wing spoiler and 21-inch forged alloy wheels with Black finish were previously only available on the LC Inspiration Series. The exclusive Manhattanhenge interior color name is derived from a rare New York City occurrence befitting of the Bespoke Build. On these two special days a year, the rising or setting sun aligns perfectly with the main Manhattan street grid, creating a beautiful orange glow that illuminates the urban skyline.

The LC 500 Bespoke Build will be further distinguished with a unique interior badge and included certificate of authenticity printed on Japanese washi paper and signed and stamped by LC Chief Engineer Yasushi Muto and Lexus Vice President of Marketing Vinay Shahani. A special LC 500 Bespoke Build configurator will launch on Lexus.com on November 17 and will allow Lexus guests to customize and place an order for their vehicle online. The selected Lexus dealer will provide updates throughout the production process for a truly personalized experience.

“Our LC buyers are true car enthusiasts, and they know exactly what they want,” said Vinay Shahani, Lexus vice president of marketing. “They are also connected and tech savvy. We are thrilled to offer a new online tool that allows them to craft their unique Bespoke Build.”

    No-Compromise Design

The Lexus LC 500 represents the most passionate expression of the Lexus brand. The eye-catching coupe displays a unique mesh grille that spreads across the front of the car. It has a large glass panel and blacked-out rear pillars that creates a floating roof appearance. Chrome-plated moldings along the edges echo the lines of a traditional Japanese sword.

One of the most stunning aspects of the LC 500 is its unique light signature at night. The taillamps were inspired by the glow of a jet’s afterburners, and the ultra-compact, triple-projector LED headlamps are not only striking – they’re lighter and half the size of conventional headlamps.

    Distinctive Craftmanship

The LC emphasizes a balance between function and comfort, sporting intent and luxury. The low instrument panel position, hood line and narrow pillars give the driver a commanding view of the road. To build a sense of continuity, the flowing lines of the door panels serve as an extension of the exterior that flows from the hood and through the windshield. The 2022 LC 500 receives a more focused color palette featuring nine exterior colors: Caviar, Smoky Granite Mica, Atomic Silver, Ultra White, Infrared*, Nightfall Mica, Flare Yellow*, Nori Green Pearl and Cadmium Orange*.

*Available for an additional $595 charge

Lexus designers paid close attention to detail when creating the LC. The exclusive seats feel as good as they look. With a two-part construction technique, the seatback drapes over the shoulder area and then wraps around the seat back. Components in the shoulder area help hold the driver securely in cornering maneuvers.

In addition, the steering wheel cross section changes around its circumference to allow for variations in grip and twisting of the wrist. The front passenger also has not been ignored; the side of the center console rises to form an integrated grab handle.

The quality finish of the upholstery, trim materials and detailing reflect the Takumi craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Lexus is known. It can be seen and felt in the hand stitching of the leather-wrapped gearshift lever and the draping treatment of the Alcantara door panel trim, among numerous other details. Available interior color schemes for the LC include Black leather, Toasted Caramel leather and Circuit Red leather. All interiors are complimented with exposed Satin Metallic ornamentation.

    High Performance

Upon startup, thundering through the variable Active Exhaust, the 5.0-liter, naturally aspirated V8 issues a full-throated engine note as a call to driving enthusiasts. The LC 500 has an output of 471 hp. and 398 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The LC is also capable of delivering a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and an EPA-estimated 25 mpg on the highway.

The powerful 5.0-liter is paired with a 10-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission that can be controlled via magnesium paddle shifters. The updated 10-speed is refinement to further evoke the performance of the V8 engine and provide an even more direct connection of driver to machine.

    Hybrid Power: Impressive and Efficient

Sixteen years ago, Lexus introduced the world’s first luxury hybrid. The LC 500h carries on that innovative tradition as the first-ever Lexus Multistage Hybrid. Like other Lexus hybrid configurations, the LC 500h Multi-stage Hybrid System teams the gasoline engine with two electric motors.

An Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine utilizes D-4S direct fuel injection for optimum efficiency while the lightweight valvetrain with Dual VVT-i ensures ample torque across the engine speed range. Moreover, the system keeps the planetary-type continuously variable transmission from Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive and adds a unique four-speed automatic transmission. Working in concert, the two gearsets alter output in four stages to utilize the V6 engine across the entire speed range.

In M mode, the two gearsets act together to provide the effect of 10 ratios, giving the LC 500h a highly engaging driving feel and allowing the driver to shift through the ratios with paddle shifters. In automatic mode, AI shift control matches gear selection to driving conditions and driver inputs. The Multistage Hybrid System allows for more electric assist at lower vehicle speeds, and it enables the LC 500h to operate with the gasoline engine off at speeds of up to 87 mph.

The combined system output of the LC 500h is 354 horsepower. With the Multistage Hybrid System, the power from the V6 engine and the electric motor can be amplified by the 4-speed automatic transmission, generating much greater drive power when accelerating. The LC 500h uses a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery. The battery pack fits neatly between the rear seats and the luggage compartment and has a high-power density, with its 84 cells producing 310.8 volts.

    2022 Multimedia

The LC features an impressive 10.3-inch high-resolution split-screen multimedia display that provides immediate, simultaneous access to audio or climate controls and various systems.

  • 2022 Lexus LX 600

    2022 lexus lx 600

“Good things come to those who wait,” the age-old expression goes. Following three impressive generations, the wait is now over – an all-new LX has arrived. Totally redesigned from the ground up – inside and out – the all-new 2022 LX 600 stands as the ultimate sport-utility flagship in the luxury brand’s growing and diversified model portfolio. The full-size luxury SUV, with its newly reengineered body-on-frame platform, avant-garde style and luxurious cabin, embodies Lexus’ commitment to meeting the diversifying needs and lifestyles of customers. It is scheduled to arrive at U.S. dealers in the first quarter of 2022.

Since its launch in 1995, the LX has been a luxury SUV icon shaped by an identity distinguished by an indomitable duality. Its comfortable ride quality and long list of amenities have defined it as a luxurious long-range cruiser, yet its tried-and-tested off-road specifications and equipment have taken it beyond the pavement in more than 50 countries and regions around the globe. As of August 2021, over 500,000 LX models have been sold throughout the world.

For its fourth generation, LX offers unparalleled refinement thanks to a full optimization of nearly every component. It adopts an all-new 20% more rigid GA-F platform, which serves as a robust foundation for its body-on-frame build. Weight is reduced by 441 pounds when compared to its predecessor, and body rigidity is also increased.

Powering LX is a high-output, high-torque 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine. More refined vehicle control in both on-road and off-road situations is enabled by the new Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system and Electric Power Steering (EPS).

Beyond the LX’s aluminum doors is an all-new cabin designed for the utmost in comfort and usability. The instrument panel features Lexus Interface with Lexus’ first dual display configuration. A 12.3-inch upper screen and 7-inch lower screen help to create a more comfortable driving experience with their variety of views, instrumentation and control adjustments.

LX’s exterior design pursues a blend of athletic performance, accessible functionality and striking beauty – a combination that began with the all-new NX. Key to LX’s design are optimized proportions that combine sophistication with power and presence.

Speaking to a wide variety of customers and diverse lifestyles is essential to the LX’s ethos. This mindset has enabled the expansion of LX’s range, which adds the all-new Ultra Luxury and F SPORT grades. The Ultra Luxury offers four independent seats for opulent travel comfort on all road surfaces. Customers preferring a sportier look and feel can select the F SPORT grade with its unique touches and handling.

    KEY TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS
    NEW GA-F PLATFORM

By adopting a new GA-F platform and redesigning the entire framework of the vehicle from the ground up, engineers revised the LX’s fundamental characteristics and reduced its center of gravity and weight, while increasing body rigidity to achieve a smooth composure and superior comfort level, according to Lexus Driving Signature. The new LX is 441 pounds lighter than its predecessor and realizes a predictable, balanced comportment during turning, acceleration and deceleration maneuvers, plus improves stability when driving off-road.

To achieve both a high level of off-road driving performance and on-road handling stability, the front high-mounted double wishbone suspension, suspension geometry and optimized coil springs offer both excellent vehicle stability and ride comfort. The suspension stroke, which is an important factor for off-road driving performance, is made sufficiently long with 100 mm/3.93 in. of bound and 145 mm/5.7 in. of rebound (15 mm/0.6 in. longer than that of the previous model) to help achieve both exceptional on and off-road driving performance.

The capable four-link axle-type suspension with rear lateral control arms is inherited from the previous model, while the suspension arms and shock absorber layout and characteristics are refined to facilitate control of axle movement, resulting in enhanced vehicle stability and ride comfort. The rebound stroke is increased by 20 mm/0.8 in. compared to the previous model to ensure excellent road-following performance.

The rear shock absorbers are placed outside of the lower control arm, and the shock absorber mounting angle has been adjusted to match the angle at which the axle moves. This makes it easier for the shock absorbers to follow the vertical movement of the wheels, increasing their damping effect and, thus, better absorbing shocks and vibrations from the road surface to provide exceptional vehicle stability.

    POWER + LINEARITY: 3.5-LITER TWIN-TURBO V6 AND DIRECT SHIFT-10AT

The 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine (V35A-FTS engine) is smaller than the outgoing naturally aspirated V8 and provides increased output and torque through turbocharging. The engine produces an output of 409 hp (415 PS) and maximum 479 lb.-ft. of torque and maintains maximum torque in a wide range up to about 3,600 rpm, making it easier to handle not only during on-road driving but also during off-road driving, which can require frequent use in the low-speed range.

The Direct Shift-10AT produces a smooth start that only a torque converter can provide, as well as manual transmission-like direct acceleration by activating lockup in almost its entire range of operation (except when the vehicle starts from a stop). The cross gear ratio setting – which brings the gear ratios of each stage closer together – and the quick gear shift time make for crisp gear shifting at regular intervals, creating a driving rhythm that is in harmony with the sound of the engine.

A wide range of gear ratios is employed for strong starting comfort as well as high-speed driving. The low first gear increases the driving force when starting at low speeds, providing a smooth start and powerful low speed off-road driving performance. In contrast, the high gearing in the 10th gear keeps the engine speed low during high-speed cruising, resulting in a quiet ride and lower fuel consumption.

An oil pan guard is installed to the lower body of the automatic transmission, which has been designed for off-road performance, to help reduce the risk of oil pan damage due to unplanned hits to the underfloor that might occur when conquering rocky roads.

ON-ROAD PERFORMANCE VIA THE LEXUS DRIVING SIGNATURE

LX’s fundamental dynamic characteristics are enhanced by way of Lexus’ first adoption of the GA-F platform and a weight reduction of 441 pounds. The high-output, high-torque twin-turbocharged engine, Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB), and Electric Power Steering (EPS) further deepen the Lexus Driving Signature by delivering driving performance that seamlessly connects deceleration, steering and acceleration in all situations, while the use of a new Active Height Control (AHC) system and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) help provide improved grip, traction and control as well as a sense of strength and security.

Although it is a frame-based vehicle that retains its predecessor’s traditional off-road driving performance and vehicle stability, the new LX offers a high level of vehicle control, along with supreme on-road ride comfort.

ACTIVE HEIGHT CONTROL (AHC) SUSPENSION AND ADAPTIVE VARIABLE SUSPENSION (AVS)

The AHC suspension, which allows the ride height to be adjusted according to the driving environment, now comes with an expanded range of ride height positions. While ride height is still adjusted through the use of shock absorbers, gas and hydraulic springs and metal springs, a spring rate switching device – which was previously only used for the front wheels – is now used for the rear wheels as well, reducing the time needed to adjust ride height. There are three settings for vehicle height while the vehicle is in motion (Normal, Hi1 and Hi2) and a Low setting for passenger ingress and egress.

The system automatically adjusts vehicle height depending on the activation of Drive Mode Select or Multi-Terrain Select and the selection status of the transfer case. Ride height status can now be displayed not only on the gauge panel but also on the 7-inch touch display. Additionally, AHC not only adjusts the vehicle height but also responds to changes in vehicle posture, such as the amount of pitch and roll, and it stabilizes vehicle posture during turning, acceleration and deceleration by optimizing the spring rate as needed.

The suspension automatically adjusts to Hi1 or Hi2 in line with the road environment in coordination with the transfer case being in the L4 range or with the mode selected during the use of Multi-Terrain Select. When Hi1 or Hi2 is selected, the system automatically adjusts the vehicle height according to the vehicle’s speed to help avoid interference with the road surface and improve handling stability.

The springs are softened to help provide a comfortable ride when overcoming bumps during in-town driving and are stiffened to help ensure a flat and stable ride when going around curves. An added benefit: Vehicle height automatically adjusts when the vehicle is in motion, and when at a standstill, lowers for easier passenger ingress and egress.

Changing to a linear solenoid valve system offers excellent damping force switching response, providing intricate and smooth control depending on the road surface and driving conditions. The damping force can be set low to provide a comfortable ride when going over bumps during in-town driving and can be set high to provide a flat and stable feeling when going around curves.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) AND ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED BRAKE (ECB)

The new EPS uses the motor and reduction gear instead of conventional hydraulics. It enables subtle tuning and provides a light steering sensation at low speeds, such as when driving off-road, and full steering weightiness at high speeds. The vehicle responds faithfully and linearly to steering operations. At low speeds, the light steering sensation contributes to reducing driver burden, and at high speeds, a moderate steering force in line with the vehicle’s speed provides a driving experience that is distinctive of Lexus Driving Signature.

The Electronically Controlled Brake system employs a sensor to detect the degree of brake pedal depression and creates braking force with the hydraulic brakes for more linear braking characteristics. When Multi-Terrain Select is selected for off-road driving, the system is designed to ensure a high level of driving stability through detailed braking control to counter slipping or spinning wheels.

WHEEL, TIRE AND REAR TORSEN® LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL (LSD) PERFORMANCE

In addition to off-road driving performance, 22-inch forged aluminum wheels, the largest in the Lexus lineup, have been adopted for the first time to improve on-road performance. The unsprung weight of all wheels, including the available 18-inch and 20-inch wheels, has been reduced for optimized rolling resistance values.

Exclusive to F SPORT grade, a Torsen® LSD is employed to help ensure traction performance of the rear tires. When accelerating during a turn, it optimally distributes the driving force according to the load on the rear left and right wheels to achieve a high level of control performance. In straight-line driving, it responds well to changes in road conditions, contributing to stability.

    2022 Lexus LX 600

    SUPERIOR PROWESS BEYOND THE PAVEMENT

The new LX has further evolved its proven ability to handle rough roads. In addition to refining “hardware” performance features such as its traditional body-on-frame structure and rear rigid suspension, the new LX boasts evolved software features such as Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) and Crawl Control. Furthermore, the introduction of various advanced technologies that support off-road driving, such as a Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) and the LX’s first dual display, enables the new LX to be driven with a greater sense of confidence in harsh environments.

    INHERITANCE OF HERITAGE

The new LX inherits the golden ratio of a 2,850 mm/112 in. wheelbase, which has been carried over from the first generation in 1995, to provide both high-level performance on rough terrain and a spacious interior. The ground obstacle angles (approach angle, departure angle and ramp break angle), maximum stable inclination angle of 44 degrees, climbing ability of 45 degrees and maximum river crossing performance of 700 mm/27.5 in. are maintained at the same level as the previous model.

    19.3-INCHES OF SCREEN ACCESS

The instrument panel features Lexus’ first Lexus Interface dual display with a 12.3-inch upper screen and 7-inch lower screen designed to inform, not distract. The upper 12.3-inch display shows navigation, audio controls and the Multi-Terrain Monitor during off-road driving. The lower 7-inch touch display shows the climate control screen and serves as a driving-support screen for Multi-Terrain Select. Displaying the camera image on the upper screen while simultaneously displaying the real-time vehicle status on the lower screen allows the driver to monitor off-road driving conditions more safely without switching the display.

    2022-Lexus-LX-600-2

    EVOLVED MULTI-TERRAIN SELECT (MTS)

The all-new LX also features Multi-Terrain Select, which allows the driver to select from six modes – Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow and Rock – to support off-road driving conditions. In addition to conventional brake hydraulics, the drive power and suspension are integrated and controlled for optimization according to the selected mode, making it possible to match driving performance to road conditions.

In addition, the operating range of Multi-Terrain Select, which was previously limited to the low range (L4), has been extended to the high range (H4). The Auto mode, which Lexus has adopted for the first time, uses information from various sensors to estimate the road conditions while driving and to optimize brake hydraulic pressure, driving force and suspension control. This feature allows the driver to maintain ideal driving performance in various driving conditions, without having to switch modes.

    CRAWL CONTROL

Engaged when the vehicle is in low range, Crawl Control allows LX to move forward or in reverse at one of five driver-selected low-speed settings: LO, MIDL, MID, MIDH and HIGH. Crawl Control intuitively orchestrates the engagement and disengagement of engine output and hydraulic braking pressure to help reduce tire slippage and optimize chassis behavior.

    DOWNHILL ASSIST CONTROL

When descending a steep slope, the system is designed to automatically control the hydraulic pressure of the brakes on all four wheels to support stable descent without locking the wheels. Because the selected vehicle speed is maintained through the operation of a switch, the driver can concentrate on steering operations without worrying about braking and accelerating, thus reducing the burden on the driver.

    MULTI-TERRAIN MONITOR (MTM)

The Multi-Terrain Monitor uses four cameras to help the driver see around the vehicle. The images captured by the front, side and rear cameras can be interchanged and are shown on the entire 12.3-inch display, allowing the driver to check road conditions, which are often in the driver’s blind spots.

By switching to the Lexus-first, Back Underfloor View, images of the foreground taken in advance are provided to the driver as transparent-underfloor images. By superimposing the vehicle and wheel position over this image, the driver can check underfloor conditions and front-wheel position. In another view, the vehicle is made transparent, and an image showing the area around the rear wheels is magnified. This can enable the driver to ascertain conditions around the rear wheels and estimate distances to obstacles.

    NEXT-GENERATION DESIGN

The all-new Lexus next-generation interior and exterior design marries superior function with stunning aesthetic. The front A-pillars are pulled rearward to create a cab-backward design, and a stout torso and 22-inch wheels (the largest in the Lexus lineup) express a dynamic driving image. For its spindle grille, a three-dimensional shape comprised of seven sets of floating bars creates a seamless and frame-free structure. It is style rooted in function: fine-tuning the thickness of each bar to the millimeter achieves not only a new look but also provides the high-level cooling performance required for the twin-turbo engine. The side radiator grilles also have large openings to ensure cooling performance and are shaped to provide a high-level rectifying effect.

For the headlamps, the L-shaped clearance lamps (with daytime running lamp function) have evolved into a three-dimensional shape, and their inner lenses have been doubled, with each having a different level to give a sense of depth and change depending on the viewing angle.

The sides portray a strong sense of unity and mass, with a thick, horizontal torso running the entirety of the profile, blending through to the muscular rear wheel arches. The LX’s quarter pillars narrow from the roof to the back window, while a distinct chiseled flow from the underside of the vehicle runs up from the lower edge of the rocker panels to behind the rear tires.

As seen on the 2022 NX, the redesigned rear LEXUS logo symbolizes the next generation of Lexus. For the rear combination lamps, tail lamps have been adopted that combine an L-shape and a continuous axial flow from the front to the shoulders and then to the rear silhouette.

New 22-inch forged aluminum wheels employ the high contrast of black and machined brilliance, emphasizing their largest-ever sizing for Lexus. For the Ultra Luxury grade, a deep three-dimensional effect is expressed by high-gloss paint, giving the tires and wheels a presence appropriate to the LX’s size.

    LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM+ 2.5

The 2022 LX comes standard with Lexus Safety System+ 2.5, which brings a suite of key active safety features to the vehicle. For starters, the Pre-Collision System (PCS), which includes Frontal Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Pedestrian Detection and Bicyclist Detection, features an enhancement to the lens camera and millimeter-wave radar elements to expand the response range. By enhancing the radar and camera capabilities, it is now possible for the system to help detect not only the vehicle ahead but also a preceding bicyclist in daytime and even a preceding pedestrian in daytime and low-light conditions. At intersections, the system has the capability under certain conditions to recognize an oncoming vehicle when performing a left-hand turn, or a pedestrian when performing left and right-hand turns, and is designed to activate typical PCS functions if needed. Additional PCS functions include Emergency Steering Assist (ESA), which is designed to assist steering within the vehicle’s lane as cued by the driver.

All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) can be activated above 30 mph and is designed to perform vehicle-to-vehicle distance controls down to 0 mph and can resume from a stop. DRCC also includes a feature that allows for smooth overtaking of slower vehicles. If traveling behind a vehicle going slower than the preset speed, once the driver engages the turn signal, the system will provide an initial increase in acceleration in preparation for changing lanes; and, after the driver changes lanes, the vehicle will continue acceleration until it reaches the original preset driving speed.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA) is designed to help notify the driver if it senses an inadvertent lane departure at speeds above 32 miles per hour via steering wheel vibrations or audible alert. It can also take slight corrective measures to help keep the driver within the visibly marked lane. When DRCC is set and engaged, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) is designed to provide slight steering force to help steer to the center of the lane to assist the driver with staying in the lane using visible lane markers or a preceding vehicle. LTA alerts the driver with a visual warning and either an audible alert or steering wheel vibration.

Additional Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 features include Intelligent High Beams, which detects preceding or oncoming vehicles and automatically switches between high beam and low beam headlights. Road Sign Assist (RSA) is designed to acquire certain road sign information using a camera and navigation maps when data is available and displays them on the multi-information display (MID).
