In 2022 Lamborghini is celebrating the V12: the legendary 12-cylinder engine that has powered its most iconic models for almost 60 years. Among these is the Murciélago, the Lamborghini model which, making its first appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2001, had the task of taking the historical V12 engine into the 21st century. And it did this in the most extraordinary way, given that when this model made its debut, the 6.2-liter engine had a maximum power output of 580 HP. This was extremely high, considering the use of the large catalytic converters required for the car to be approved in all world markets, including the most stringent ones in terms of emissions.

The Murciélago was the first Lamborghini to be entirely designed using the CAD-CAM system, which guarantees design precision of the highest level and allows a significantly higher quality of assembly and finish. In terms of look, the Murciélago took shape in its entirety within the new design department, the Lamborghini Centro Stile, under the direction of Luc Donckerwolke who had already redesigned the Diablo but who, with the Murciélago, had the rare privilege of starting with a clean sheet for the design of both the bodywork and the interiors. The total height was just 120 centimeters and the distinctive hallmark “scissor doors” were retained.

The evolution of the 12-cylinder engine

When it was first created, the Murciélago came in just one hard-top version with a 6.2-liter engine delivering 580 HP at 7200 rpm. Thanks to the dry-sump lubrication, the Murciélago engine was positioned five centimeters lower than that of the Diablo, with clear benefits in terms of drivability. It could reach a maximum speed of 330 km/h and went from 0 to 100 in 3.8 seconds.

The Murciélago coupé was then joined by the roadster version in 2004. The second-generation Murciélago models, formally the Murciélago LP 640-4 (both closed and roadster), made their debut in 2007 and remained in production with the V12 delivering an increased 640 HP at 8000 rpm until 2010. In 2010, the Murciélago LP 650-4 Roadster arrived on the scene, with manually attached soft top and 6.5-liter engine delivering 650 HP at 8000 rpm, and in 2009-2010 came the 670-4 SV (Super Veloce). With 670 HP output and a maximum speed of 341 km/h, it was 100 kg lighter thanks to the use of carbon fiber for a number of components.

All Murciélago models are all-wheel drive, with the system borrowed directly from that of the Diablo, with the Ferguson viscous coupling differential capable of distributing torque up to a maximum of 70% at the rear and 30% at the front.  The carbon fiber undercarriage with mixed-structure floor panel with aluminum was, at the time, the most rigid supporting structure ever produced by Lamborghini. The chassis was completely revised, with new suspension and geometry.

    Mechanical transmission

The Murciélago was the last Lamborghini V12 to come with a mechanical transmission, in this case, six-speed with reverse. Later, the manual transmission was complemented by an electronic automated transmission with gear sequence via levers located behind the steering wheel.

    Racing

In 2004, the Murciélago debuted on the racing track with the R-GT, developed for the GT World Championship, held under the banner of the FIA and the ACO for the Japanese championship. Nine cars were assembled, all rear-wheel drive, significantly lighter due to the almost-total use of carbon fiber materials, and equipped with larger tires and brakes.

    The legend of the name

As is tradition, Lamborghini chooses the names of its models from the world of bullfighting. In the case of the Murciélago, Spanish for “bat”, legend has it that a bull with this name who survived the bullring was gifted to Don Antonio Miura, and that it was from this animal that the famous breeder bred his Miura bulls. In reality, there is no evidence supporting this legend, and there are some discrepancies in the timeline.

    Limited series

The Murciélago was also produced in some limited series, starting from 2003 with the celebrations for the 40th Anniversary of Automobili Lamborghini, with 50 units. The 40th Anniversary model is recognizable by the special “Verde Artemis” color, some external carbon fiber details and revamped wheel rims, an upgraded exhaust and numbered plate mounted inside the specially designed leather upholstered cockpit.

The Murciélago LP 640 Versace, available in only two colors, black and white, made its debut in 2006. Lamborghini Ad Personam and Versace designers created a special design, with a two-interior and a matching set of luggage, also produced by Versace. Special accessories, including a scarf and driving shoes, both with Versace branding, were designed to complement the model.

Dedicated exclusively to the Chinese market, just ten units of the 670-4 SV “China Limited Edition” were produced. It is recognizable by the stripe running along the hood and roof.

    Speed record at Nardò

In February 2002, Lamborghini took a Murciélago to the test track in Nardò, Puglia, in an attempt to set a new world speed record for a standard production car. At the wheel was test driver Giorgio Sanna, today the Head of Lamborghini Squadra Corse. The goal was accomplished, despite the unexpected tire change during the fuel stop, with 305.048 km (189.55 miles) traveled in one hour and with an average speed on the fastest lap of 325.98 km/h (202.55 mph). The records over 100 km and 100 miles were also broken.

    Murciélago on film

Scores of films and music videos have featured the Murciélago in a variety of roles. Without doubt, the most famous is Batman Begins in 2005, where it was used as Bruce Wayne/Batman’s personal car, with actor Christian Bale in the leading role. The Murciélago’s career in video games is extraordinary, where it has been used in Gran Turismo 7, Forza Horizon (versions 1-2-3-4), Asphalt 7, Drive Club, and Horizon Chase.

The “pure” Lamborghini V12 combustion engine in its final form will go out of production before the end of 2022, when the last Aventador Ultimae[1] is made. From next year, the successor to the Aventador will be fitted with a new plug-in hybrid version of the V12 engine.

Murciélago cars produced (2001-2011): 4,099 (entire series).

  • Super Veloce Racing-approved Lambo model seeks new owner. Here are details

    Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SV

Super Veloce Racing has accepted an application for a rather special Lamborghini model. In fact, this vehicle is one of the rarest Lambos in existence: there are only 186 built worldwide and yes, we are indeed talking about the Murcielago LP-670-4 SV. This sweetie is also the third to adorn the Super Veloce moniker after the Miura SV and Diablo SV cars and features massive 6.5-liter V12 unit that produces a total of 661hp (493kW), mated to a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox.

Also, this particular unit is further enhanced with special aerodynamic pack that contributes to better aerodynamics, agility and of course, style. In fact, as we speak about styling, this one is definitely a worthy Lamborghini family member. It features angular front nose and enlarged air intakers. Furthermore, the Chassis 022 comes with a carbon-fiber pack with carbon brakes, carbon fiber body components, carbon-fiber aeropack wing and double-deckdiffuser.

  • This is what happens when you take a Lamborghini for a mountain ride [w/video]

Jon Olsson Lamborghini Murcielago front viewLamborghini Murcielago is not the car that you would put to the extreme mountain conditions, isn’t it? Not if you are Jon Olsson. The professional free-skier has done what many might think heretical and the good news is that everything is captured in a 15-minutes long video (awesome!), which you can watch below.

Taking the heavily modified Lamborghini Murcielago on the top of a mountain wasn’t an easy task. Although Olsson is most of the time lucky in his crazy endeavors and is usually ending up “killing it”, this time the mountain refused to give the team any kind of hard snow to drive on. Eventually, they had to give up.

SEE ALSO: Jon Olsson is ready for Gumball 3000 with a fierce Audi RS6

Despite that the professional athlete thinks that this was a “huge failure”, the video and pictures from the adventure are worth to view, so that you can decide whether it is so. The best thing is that he is actually searching for new location to try this again.

Jon Olsson Lamborghini Murcielago side view

To make everything that you see in the video possible, team Overkill had to convert the Lambo in several ways. First, the all-wheel-drive supercar had to become with rear-wheel configuration. Then, Olsson added Mad Max wheels, fitted with extremely wide wheels on top of which he added spikes. At last, we should mention the heavy modification done on the 6.5-liter V12 engine (specifics aren’t available). Enjoy the video!

Wait a minute! Olsson’s brand new project Lamborghini Huracan is going to be revealed very soon. What we know so far is that it will wear more than just the military inspired foil-wrap and a roof box. Stay tuned!

  • Revitalized: D2Forged Lamborghini Murcielago CV2

D2Forged-Lamborghini-Murcielago-THUMBD2Forged Lamborghini Murcielago CV2 is a tuning which is needed to be observed more thoroughly. The Murcielago is one of the most iconic supercars that have been produced in the past ten years and it definitely could be named a “dream car”.

The famous Lamborghini model made its debut back in 2002 in North America and back then it was the most powerful vehicle of the line ever produced. Thanks to its V12 engine it produces 670 hp (493 kW) which meant that it’s carbon fibery body is capable of accelerating from standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.9 seconds.

The timeless design of the Murcielago in the present case was enhanced by D2Forged via adding brand new wheels. The new set of clean, sporty and aggressive D2FORGED CV2 Shallow Concave wheels have been finished in a full blacked out color scheme, with a color-matched outer pinstripe and hand painted “D2″ centercap small details in Lamborghini’s Arancio Borealis finish.

Although this is very simple enhancement you can see how it affects the overall appearance of the supercar. Thanks to it the latter is revitalized, and ready to “rock-n-roll”! To be more precise, the D2FORGED CV2 Shallow Concave wheels are in size 20×8.5 and 20×13″ for the front and rear respectively.

  • Lamborghini Murcielago LP2000-2 SV Twin Turbo [video]

Here is one of the most powerful street legal vehicles in the world – a staggering twin-turbocharged Lamborghini Murcielago. As you know, the number behind the model in Lambo range means amount of HP and this is LP2000-2. That’s right, it has over two thousand horsepower at the rear wheels, which is bad… very bad. There is not chance to put this amount of power on the asphalt, but who cares?

The upgrades are countless, but some of the most interesting are a custom throttle body, a custom 12-inch exhaust system, custom billet aluminum plenum, 5” cold air intakes, as well as a custom Garrett GTX-4294 twin-turbo conversion.

The conversion is made by Covert Tuning Dynamics and took more than 3,000 hours of build time, along with no less than four years of R&D.

Other upgrades include a strut brace, six point roll-cage, custom sound system, custom battery, intercooler and NASA heat shielding. We are curious, what exactly is that, but probably nobody will tell…

The exterior features nice satin and matt finish and some carbon elements – side mirrors, carbon fuel door and brakes. The tuned Mucielago stands on a set of ADV.1 wheels. There were also some weight reduction, which is significant – 250 kg (550 lbs) less than the factory version of the car.

In other words, this is a fantastic car, but useless on the roads.

Check out the video, where you will see a lot talking and no action, just like the car itself.

  • The Golden Renaissance Project: SR Auto Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV

SR-Auto-Lamborghini-Murcielago-LP670-4-SV-THUMBSR Auto Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV: The Golden Renaissance Project is another breathtaking visual enhancement of the emblematic car that is worth mentioning. We have seen so many good transformations from the SR Auto, including many examples of the legendary cars of Lamborghini.

What we haven’t seen yet is how with little touch and imagination, the forefront of the LP670-4 SV is transformed. In the age of the rose gold wheel, PUR Wheels have taken the challenge of giving the supercar the majestic rose gold PUR 6IX.

Paired with the exquisite white exterior, this 661 horsepower beast can captivate anyone by its glorious sight.

  • SR Auto Joint Venture for the Lamborghini Murcielago

SR-Auto-Inspired-Autosport-Murcielago-thumbSR-Auto-Inspired-Autosport-Murcielago-mediumRemember that carbon fibery goodness from Mansory we talked about a while back? Well, this… is not related at all. It is as matte black as charcoal so that’s something. Oh, and it’s a Lamborghini Murcielago – a bit outdated, a bit crude and essentially, a timeless icon.

For this one, SR Auto apparently needed some help so they turned to the fellow Canadian company Inspired Autosport. But for what exactly did they need help, remains undisclosed. Literally, the only two things out of the ordinary with this Murcielago is the paint job and the wheel set. And they are not even domestic – PUR 1NE monoblocks.

The end result? A 631 hp naturally aspirated V12 batmobile, cleverly disguised as a Lamborghini Murcielago that’s capable of a 0 to 60 mph acceleration in just 3.3 seconds – stunning figures for it’s time and age. It’s power is transmitted to all fours through an Audi-ish AWD system and through a 6-speed manual/semi-automatic.

  • 2012 DMC Lamborghini Murcielago LP700 M-GT

2012-DMC-Lamborghini-Murcielago-LP700-M-GT-THUMB2012 DMC Lamborghini Murcielago LP700 M-GT will leave in awe every Lamborghini fan thanks to its styling and performance kit delivered by the German based DMC Exotic Car Tuning Company. Here DMC‘s team aimed to refresh the supercars look in terms of exterior and interior while staying true to the original line. The result is incredible.

The M-GT has a clear outlook with the pure aggressive stance of the design DNA of the LP670. To achieve greater downforce on the front, DMC tuners redesigned the front and rear bumper with integrated diffusers. All parts that are used were manufactured in pure carbon fiber by an Autoclave. Another addition is the newly developed rear wing spoiler.

On the other hand the interior of the DMC Lamborghini Murcielago LP700 M-GT has a cockpit which provides sports racing atmosphere. A complete make-over has been done with the help of carbon fiber and fine leathers, and of cours with great attention to the detail.

How about the exhaust of this Lamborghini? The DMC stainless sports rear end pipe emits a sound similar to that generated from race tracks. In addition, this end pipe gives the car even sportier rear look. The exhaust system can be further extended with a DMC sport metallic catalytic converter.

    2012 DMC Lamborghini Murcielago LP700 M-GT

What is more important here is to mention that while the traditional Lamborghini design includes combined overhead throttle valves per cylinder bank, DMC has decided to use 12 unique single intake throttle plates, one per each cylinder.

The gasoline pumps and lines, as well as pressure modulators and injection nozzles are also replaced by new components. The new requirements therefore will be met with the new crankshafts created. Further optimization will happen on the engine electronics, an electronic load pressure control system, and in addition a new wiring will be included as well. Eventually, this will make possible for the engine to be rebranded as LP700.

Pur-6IX-Lamborghini-Murcielago-LP-630-thumbHere’s a Lamborghini Mercielago LP 640. Beautiful isn’t it? Wait! Are you looking at the wheels? Because if you are, PUR Wheels have done their job properly – captivating onlookers with their rose gold concept monoblock wheels titled ’6IX’. Yes, concept wheels are a thing and we are not sure if this is coming out or is it just showing off.

Either way, one has to admit that they look stunning on this dying breed of V12 hypercars. Here, on this rather static gallery, their five, dobule-spoked design can be seen in it’s full glory. Alternatively, in motion, one can imagine that the Lambo’s 640 hp will render them into blurry swirls of golden magnificence. The body/wheel contrast of the whole thing, can only help the appeal. It’s as if blackberry jam is being smeared on honey crusted Pop-Tarts. Or am I simply hungry?
