  • Koenigsegg CC850

Twenty years ago the introduction of the Koenigsegg’s first production car, the CC8S, defined the new “megacar” category. Today, in celebration of the CC8S’s 20th anniversary, the Koenigsegg CC850 was unveiled at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering to an audience of media, customers, and industry luminaries.

The CC850 is a contemporary reimagination of the Koenigsegg CC8S. It is also a dual tribute for Koenigsegg, celebrating 20 years of vehicle production, as well as the 50th birthday of the company’s founder and namesake, Christian Von Koenigsegg. As such, CC850 production will be limited to just 50 cars worldwide.

“The CC850 is an homage to the single most meaningful car in Koenigsegg history,” said Christian von Koenigsegg. “The CC8S put us on the map and made us successful – and celebrating 20 years of production, alongside my 50th birthday, felt like the right time to reveal the CC850 to appreciate our roots.”

     The Ultimate Driver’s Megacar

The CC850’s mission is to deliver the purest, most fundamentally joyful driving experience of any Koenigsegg so far. While visually the CC8S inspiration is apparent, the drivetrain, engine, and capabilities of the CC850 are anything but vintage.

The CC850’s 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 was engineered and constructed entirely in-house. As seen in the Jesko, this V8 does not feature a flywheel and is therefore the most responsive, fastrevving engine possible. The visceral experience and accompanying aural signature are otherworldly and incomparable.

    Performance is staggering—the CC850’s 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 delivers 1,185 hp on gasoline or 1,385 hp on E85, as well as 1,385 nm (1,020 lb-ft) of torque.

As with the iconic Koenigsegg ONE:1 released in 2014, the CC850 also achieves a 1:1 power to weight ratio with 1385 hp and a 1385 kg curb weight.

    Revolutionary World-First Transmission

What makes the Koenigsegg CC850 truly unique and driver-focused is its revolutionary, worldfirst Engage Shift System (ESS). The ESS allows for different gear ratios depending on the driving mode, providing tailored experiences based on road or track use. But that’s not what truly sets ESS apart.

Based on Koenigsegg’s Light Speed Transmission (LST), ESS, paired with a clutch pedal, is an adaptable, multi-ratio, 6-speed manual transmission that also can run as a super-fast, smoothshifting 9-speed automatic. The ability for the driver to seamlessly choose between an unadulterated manual transmission or more laid-back automatic shifting is unprecedented. It places the CC850 in a class by itself.

The gated ESS shifter is a work of mechanical art and is reminiscent of Swiss chronographs— intricate, aesthetically beautiful, and completely functional. Great care has been taken to make the ESS one of the most engaging manuals ever created. Additionally, the Swedish flag crowns the manual shifter as it did in the original manual CC8S.

    CC850 Design: Familiar, Yet All-New

The exterior showcases sleek Nordic Koenigsegg design, telephone-dial style rims and triple taillights, all of which draw inspiration from the earliest Koenigsegg models.

The interior boasts a symmetrical, minimal design aesthetic akin to the CC8S. This symmetry makes adaptations for left- and right-hand drive versions practical. The round steering wheel, the open-gate shifter with exposed mechanical components, and the analogue chrono cluster showcase the precision work that underpins the CC850.

And of course, as a Koenigsegg, the CC850 features the iconic detachable hardtop, the synchrohelix door system, the Autoskin function – and, naturally, it can run on renewable fuels.

    Historic and Unforgettable

The original CC8S was a showstopper. It not only broke records immediately and won awards— it set new industry standards and put Koenigsegg, a small, determined Swedish Megacar company, on the map.

The CC850 was not created to break Jesko’s track records or set new high-water marks for top speed, but to offer the highest level of driver satisfaction and enjoyment with the exhilarating performance for which Koenigsegg is renowned.

  • So, what’s so special about the camless engine systems? [w/video]

Koenigsegg Camless EngineWe all know how it started: back in 19th century Nikolaus Otto patented a rather interesting system. It contained four key elements that eventually led to a global domination, as it comes to automobile industry. Indeed, suck, squeeze, bang and blow are the actions that help millions of people worldwide to move faster through land.

What is also special about this engine system is that the action of the intake valves which allow the system to breathe and the exhaust valves that let it expel gases were defined by shaft of eccentric lobes rotating exactly half the speed of power unit’s crankshaft.

Then modern systems hit the market and people’s minds. Electric vehicles and green energy are sort of the main topics in news, press releases and everyday small chats. And more people should be talking about this thing called a camless engine.

So, what is this modern technology?

Long story short, the camless technology offers more power and better fuel efficiency. Short story long, the “cams” still spin half as fast as the crank, but changes the relative opening and closing of the valves in relation to the crank position.

In most engine systems the camshaft’s rotating lobes push rockers that further open the valves and allow springs to shut them. But the main downside is that there are these stages in which the valves are partially opened or partially closed, which greatly reduces the efficiency and overall system productivity.

    Koenigsegg Camless Engine

What the new system is doing is to allow more control over engine’s intake and exhaust valves, thanks to the recently developed electro-hydraulic-pneumatic actuators.

In theory, the camless engine can run on any combination of cylinders with the conventional or the more efficient Atkinson and Miller cycles. Also in theory, a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder power unit with a total of 250 horsepower can deliver some 40-plus mpg on two cylinders. Sweet… but we would like to see that happening in the real world.

This engine technology has been created in conjunction with FreeValve AB, one of Koenigsegg’s sister brands and it offers reduced fuel consumption of up to 17 per cent. It is also far more compact. But it can’t be perfect, right?

There are definitely some downsides. For example, there is a draw from the engine to run the pneumatic and oil actuators. But these losses are not as nearly as bad as those stemming from the friction associated with driving cams, chains and spring-loaded valves. Last, let’s not forget that the noise “camless” engines produce, still does not pass the public requirements.

  • Koenigsegg Releases Hybrid? Yes, Meet the new Regera [VIDEO]

Koenigsegg One:1 and Agera RS are the fastest cars on the planet. But what’s missing here is the brand new model called Regera, which was introduced in Geneva in the beginning of the week. The name stands for “to reign” in Swedish and it is very appropriate for this powerful and responsive car. But what is more interesting is the power that it uses, because it is a hybrid. Yes, a hybrid.

I definitely did not expect this, but there is probably nothing much to develop, since the previously mentioned models have already done so well. Lightweight and competitive, the Regera performs fantastic. Koenigsegg says that this is the fastest accelerating and most powerful production vehicle ever. Is this true we’ll see in the lines below.

In details, Internal Combustion Engine is what powers the model, namely the DOHC 5.0 liter V8 unit. There is also electric propulsion of the Direct Drive system at hand. This results in a combined power output of more than 1500 Hp (1103 kW) and 2000 Nm (1476 lb-ft) of torque.

But as the company says, the Regera does not have the disadvantages of a hybrid. The first reason for this is that it is lightweight in contrasts to the heavy hybrids with two independent propulsion systems. Secondly, the car is equipped with the new Koenigsegg Direct Drive Transmission (KDD) which substitutes the traditional transmission of the combustion engine and offers the option of pure EV mode.

The EV plug feature allows the Direct Drive Battery to be charged by the combustion engine or through the charging port. Koenigsegg also developed a plug-in solution called Battery Drain Mode (BDM).

We’ll focus on this, because it is really innovative. For instance, if the next charging point is in around 50 km range left, a preset geo location will trigger the BDM. This in turn will forecast the driving behaviour, thus ensuring that the battery is fully drained upon arrival.

In addition, this car has been fully robotized. Precisely, the Regera includes technology tweaks such as active front and rear wings, chassis control and lifting system. It is also the first car which operates all body closures absolutely automatically. In addition to this the wing mirrors are auto-folding while the doors open, which is a very cool feature.

The doors as you can see aren’t conventional and swing out and rotate 90 degrees to fully clear the door opening. They are called Dihedral Synchro Helix Doors. Another very interesting feature here is the world’s first fully foldable active rear wing, which you can see “appearing” in the video below.

The company has focused in this Koenigsegg on the luxury too. Take a look at exterior’s constellation daylight running lights or the soothing surfaces inside, the electrically adjustable memory foam seats or the ambient lighting.

We receive the information that Regera will be built in only 80 examples, making it a pure limited edition.

  • New Koenigsegg Regera Teased Again

Earlier this month, the supercar manufacturer from Sweden, Koenigsegg, announced that they are planning to reveal a new RS variant of their Agera during the upcoming 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Now we are given a teaser image which supplies us with even more questions than answers. From a visional standpoint, the only thing that we can see is part of the car’s front bumper. Moreover, the vehicle will feature a brand new headlight design.

Previously it has been reported that the new Koenigsegg Regera is going to be a hell of a ‘megacar’ similar to the One:1 which is the most powerful production car for the time being. If this turns out to be the absolute truth, we will be able to see yet another mighty automotive beast which will be dazzling with at least 1,341 HP. Finally, Koenigsegg claims that the Regera will be packed with extensive luxurious flavor and revolutionary technology.

Just as a reminder, Koenigsegg One:1 has a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 aluminum engine – 1,341 HP (986 kW) and 1,371 Nm (1,011 lb-ft) at 6,000RPM. The curb weight is exactly 1,341 kg (2,956 lbs). The engine is mated to a dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox sending the power to an electronic differential at the rear wheels. 0-400 km/h in 20.0 seconds. Additionally, the engine can run on regular gasoline, as well as with E85 biofuel and race fuel.

    We’ll have more information soon!

  • Game on: Volvo FH Truck Racing Against Koenigsegg One:1

Setting a massive eight-tonne Volvo FH against one of the fastest cars around the world, precisely Koenigsegg One:1, may sound a bit like a joke. Except that it is not. The question though is why? If it is for the spectacular part, no doubt it is going to be spectacular. Not every day you can see Hulk against The Flash! Nevertheless, the main reason for this “rivalry” is to test, once again, the I-Shift Dual Clutch gearbox fitted to the Volvo truck, and see if the FH can cover one lap of the Knutstorp race faster than the Koenigsegg can cover two laps.

Five red lights. They come on. They go off. And start! Now this is going to be one hell of a race!

The two vehicles set off and as they do so, Koenigsegg One:1 is already cutting the air with its high speed. The truck, on the other hand, is left to bite the dust behind. We can admit that looking at the video, we can see the Volvo truck struggling just a little bit… or more. Still, the performance makes the hair on your neck stand up. You nearly won, Volvo FH.

To clarify some of the vehicles’ characteristics, Volvo FH tractor unit delivers 540 horsepower and is equipped, as already pointed out, with I-Shift Dual Clutch. The functionality of its speed limiter has been previously removed in order to give the truck a slightly better chance against its opponent. Thanks to this, Volvo FH reached a speed of almost 130 km/h (80 mph) on the track race. Despite the slight helpful push, it is all about fair play after all, the outcome is still unpredictable.

The Koenigsegg One:1, on the other hand, is noted as one of the world’s mega-hyper-super-fast cars. Its name One:1 derives from the power 1360 PS and weight 360 kg. The exact ratio of 1:1 is a combination that no other sports car manufacturer has managed to achieve ever before. The engine of this Koenigsegg produces more than 1000 Nm of torque between 3000 and 7500 rpm and is capable of 0-100 km / h (0-62 mph) in less than 2 seconds.

  • If Koenigsegg One:1 Was Driven By Dubai Police

Koenigsegg-Agera-One-Dubai-Police-THUMBDubai Police is probably the luckiest police department in the world because it is famous for driving some of the most expensive, exclusive and fastest cars in the world. In their fleet we have already seen Mercedes-Benz G-Class tuned by Brabus, Chevrolet Camaro SS, Aston-Martins and Lamborghinis. It was even speculated that a Bugatti has joined the exclusive line-up of Dubai police vehicles, however – soon proven wrong by A. Kahn Design. What we have found over Facebook recently is an interesting render which shows how a Koenigsegg One:1 would look like if it has been attributed to this famous department. It is made by the creative digital artist and photographer Santapanter (real name is Teun Verwijmeren).Dubai Police One:1 features unique exterior treatment – it is dressed in white, but has green and black accents all over its body. Carbon fiber is visible almost everywhere: on the top-cover, hood, rear wing, side sills, front and rear bumpers, rearview mirrors. Even the five-spoke wheels were made of this material.Koenigsegg One:1 was unveiled one week ahead of Geneva Auto Show, where it made is official premiere. It is world’s fastest production car, generating 1,341 horsepower (986 kW) and 1,371 Nm (1,011 lb-ft) of torque at 6,000RPM thanks to its 5.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8 aluminum engine. This almost unbelievable amount of power is transmitted on the road through a dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox, which sends it to an electronic differential at the rear wheels. If you wonder about its top speed – well, it is 440 km/h (273 mph). The car covers the sprint from 0 to 400 km/h in just 20.0 seconds. And definitely this makes it perfect for the police department in Dubai.

  • QUANT e-Sportlimousine To Make Official Debut In Geneva

NanoFLOWCELL AG is going to make a very special debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in a month. It is going to stage a world premiere of the QUANT e-Sportlimousine. The latter is the first research car equipped with nanoFLOWCELL drive.

What has been announced is that the vehicle has an overall length of 5.25 metres and will be a four-seater. It will also offer unique combination of innovative technology, outstanding design and an entirely new energy storage system, called the nanoFLOWCELL technology.

Back in 2009 Swedish supercar builder Koenigsegg joined NLV Solar AG to release the QUANT project. The model used Flow Accumulator Energy Storage (FAES), which was responsible for the 512 hp (376 kW) and 714 Nm (527 lb-ft) of torque, and had a range of 300-mile and a charging time of 15-20 minutes.

And although the intent of both companies was to start the production of the model, this didn’t happen even in 2010 when NanoFLOWCELL AG returned to the show without the Swedish automaker. Four years later we are to see the birth of this brand new project, which still carries the same name and has the same aim – to deliver innovative technologies and exceptional design. Stay tuned for more information, which is to be released near the official debut.
