  • Chevrolet Impala’s CNG tank can survive bullets

    2015-Chevy-tank_thumb2015-Chevy-tank_651

There are many different fuels besides gasoline out there with each one of them having advantages and drawbacks. In the recent years, however, compressed natural gas (CNG) has become a popular type of fuel due to several advantages – it is cheap, it does not pollute the environment and it provides almost as much power as gasoline. The drawback? It’s the CNG tank as there may be leakages and other problems.

This is not the case with the tank of the CNG-powered 2015 Chevrolet Impala. The car boasts a tank that is so safe and so strong it can survive bullets and fires that come from different directions. Chevrolet has achieved this level of endurance and safety by adding a large piece of cast aluminum that protects the tank valve and connection from certain side impacts and sheet metal plates on either side help protect it from loose objects in the trunk or rear seat. Chevrolet has also exposed the tank to pressures higher than 3,600 PSI, which is the normal value and then other extreme situations, exceeding US federal regulations and CNG industry guidelines. In addition to that the tank has undergone long-term structural integrity tests equivalent to 15,000 pressure cycles and hydrostatic burst tests of up to 8,100 PSI. This is what the tank also had to endure:

    • The industry-standard Bonfire Test confirms the CNG tank’s pressure relief valves are operational and help prevent the tank from rupturing in a fire. In addition to placing the tank about four inches above a steady 800-degree Fahrenheit fire, General Motors’ engineers added trunk, back seat and underbody fires to test the pressure relief valves’ ability to sense heat on all sides of the tank. And the tests were done at two different fuel levels.
    • In the Penetration Test, the tank is filled to its service pressure and is shot with a 7.62 mm armor piercing bullet. In order to pass the test, the bullet has to pass completely through one side of the tank without exiting out the other side. The goal is to have the tank maintain the bullet hole only as the weak structural point, without rupturing.
    • Front barrier, side impact and rear impact crash tests were conducted on the Bi-Fuel Impala. Some aftermarket CNG-conversion kit manufacturers conduct only a barrier test.

The all-steel, trunk-mounted tank holds about 7.8 gallons of gas, enough for the driver to cover about 150 miles of driving after which the car automatically and seamlessly switches to gasoline. The Bi-fuel Impala, which is also a 2015 “Green Car of the Year” finalist, is the auto-industry’s only manufacturer-produced full size sedan in North America that runs both on CNG and gasoline. The CNG system is covered by a 5-year, 100,000-mile limited warranty, whichever comes first, and can be serviced at Chevy dealerships in both the USA and Canada.

The CNG-powered 2015 Chevrolet Impala can be ordered now. The car will ship by the end of this year.

  • 2015 Chevrolet Impala – US Price $27,735

Chevrolet has unveiled the 2015 Impala, which is expected to hit the market in the summer with pricing starting from $27,735 (including an $825 destination charge) for the entry level LS model. The top-of-ragen LT trim level with six-cylinder engine is priced at $30,960.

  • 2015 Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel CNG Goes On Sale

2015-Chevrolet-Impala-Bi-Fuel-CNG-THUMB2015 Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel CNG is going on sale this summer as promised. The car was introduced last year and is the industry’s only manufacturer-produced full-size sedan in North America that can run on both compressed natural gas (CNG) and gasoline. The car is offered in either an LS base trim or a higher-equipped LT trim. This Chevrolet was created in order to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the OPEC Oil Embargo – The National Summit on Energy Security.

The vehicle is available only with a 3.6L hardened engine with hardened valves and valve seats. This will deliver more wear resistance and durability with the CNG fuel system. The CNG tank is mounted in the trunk. It has an equivalent capacity of 7.8 gallons of gasoline, which means that it is expected to offer approximately 150 city miles of range on compressed natural gas. Gasoline and compressed natural gas combined will offer an expected range of 500 city miles.

Natural gas is one of the cleanest-burning fuels currently available. The vehicles that run on CNG produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline-powered cars. In addition, it will also help customers reduce fuel costs next to the reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions.

Primarily, the Impala runs on CNG. When the fuel tank is depleted, the system automatically and seamlessly switches to run on gasoline. Those who want to change fuels while driving can do so by simply pushing a button on the dashboard. This button utilizes LED light to indicate when CNG is being used.

2015 Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel CNG has a starting price of $38,210 USD.

  • New Technology Features For 2014 Chevrolet Impala [VIDEO]

2014-Chevrolet-Impala-ACC-THUMB2014 Chevrolet Impala is going to be equipped with full-speed-range adaptive cruise control. This new feature will considerably decrease the number of repeated stops and starts during every day driving.

In fact, this 2014 Impala is the first Chevrolet vehicle which will offer this technology. The latter addresses the continuous task of braking and accelerating via a cruise control system that in turn allows the driver to maintain a driver-selected following gap with the vehicle ahead.

This full-speed-range adaptive cruise control system utilizes forward-looking radar, which allows the driver to choose the three gaps at which to follow the car ahead. These gaps are adaptable to the selected cruise speed. Therefore is ensured a larger distance between the cars at a higher cruise speed. In addition, the system automatically accelerates and stops the vehicle up to moderate levels in order to maintain the chosen gap.

Furthermore, the Adaptive Cruise Control still needs driver’s full attention to the road condition, because when needed he or she can override the system and manually accelerates or stop. This new technology addition to the Impala can dramatically decrease the workload and stress associated with the everyday task of car following.

Two other features include in the car, will provide help in order to avoid or reduce the damage caused by crashes. The firs one is Forward Collision Alert, which signals when the driver is approaching a vehicle in front of them too quickly or if they are following much too closely.

The second is the Crash Imminent Braking that is offered with the ACC package and can intervene to automatically apply the brakes. Other available features on the Impala include Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Vision Camera, and Ultrasonic Rear Part Assist.

  • Chevrolet SS Performance Sedan

NASCAR-Chevrolet-SS-thumbIt’s official: Chevrolet are going to have a V8 RWD performance sedan back in it’s fleet. It will be called the Chevrolet SS and, as a class, will slot right above the Impala. It will also provide the base for Chevrolet’s NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar which is set for a debut at the 2013 Daytona 500.

“As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track. I am personally looking forward to driving it.”

Not much to think about here, except that name – the SS. Back in the days, Chevrolet used to label their performance edition with a Super Sport designation. First appeared in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car, it stuck on and became a synonym for power, performance and exclusivity. The firs production car to come with an SS edition was the 1961 Impala – only 453 were ever made and all of them had their chassis and suspension revised, power brakes (big deal back then), a tachometer on the steering wheel column and some flashy wheels. One of the Last SS models to come from Chevrolet is the 2010 Camaro. Now, when the upcoming V8 rear-wheel-driven, sedan is a full-blown SS, one has to wonder if it lives up to it’s name. Also, Chevrolet should consider coming up with a new name if they are going to make a hardcore version of the SS (SS SS) would be kind of redundant.

The production Chevrolet SS will start as a MY 2014 with production starting late in 2013, so there will be more updates to come. In the mean time catch a glimpse of the camouflaged NASCAR Chevrolet SS provided by the company itself.

    • Lane departure warning is again camera-based lane detection system that warns the driver of impending lane changes.
    • Side blind zone alert is using radar sensors on both sides of the vehicle, and “looks” for other vehicles in the blind zone areas of the Impala and indicates their presence with LED-lit symbols in the outside mirrors.
    • Rear cross traffic alert, which is based on the radar sensors of side blind zone alert, and warns the driver of vehicles in traffic when backing out of a parking spot – including angled parking.

What has to be additionally mentioned is that the Impala is being offered with three powertrains, which all feature fuel-saving direct injection and lightweight components.

For instance, the Impala’s Ecotec 2.4L engine works with the eAssist system and delivers electrical assist in certain conditions to help save fuel. It is estimated at 182 horsepower (134 kW) and is expected to achieve 35 mpg on the highway.

Secondly, the Ecotec 2.5L is part of a new family of four-cylinder engines and is developed with increased efficiency and greater refinement. It is estimated at195 horsepower (145 kW).

Thirdly, the Output for the 3.6L V-6 is estimated at 303 horsepower (226 kW).

All of Impala’s engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions.
