  • Hyundai ix35 is the First Mass Produced Fuel Cell EV

Hyundai ix35Zero-emissions mean more eco-friendliness and happier earth. It might seem strange to you but the emission-less cars become more and more important in out society, hence for the automotive industry, too. And as the time goes by, these vehicles become stronger, faster, lighter and more beautiful.

Take for instance, Hyundai’s ix35 Fuel Cell. This is one of most advanced alternative fuel vehicles currently available on the market. It is powered by hydrogen and this is actually the first mass produced fuel cell electric vehicle in the world.

This crossover is on sale all over the globe since 2013, and some of you might have seen it already on the road. To go into details, the ix35 Fuel Cell uses the power from a 100kW (136 PS) electric motor, which is enough to make it reach a Vmax of 100mph (160km/h).

The vehicle also has two hydrogen storage tanks that weigh a total of 5.64kg. They allow the SUV to drive up to 369 miles (594km) on a single fill. Another benefit that these tanks deliver is that they enable the vehicle to start in temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius.

In addition, the energy is stored in a 24kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, which Hyundai has jointly developed with LG Chemical. Of course, the result did not happen over night. The impressive figures and data that the car shows is an effect of years of development.

This year’s ix35 Fuel Cell is actually the fourth-generation fuel cell-powered EV. It not only shows significant improvements over its predecessor, but also allows for an enhanced driving range with 50%. At the same time, it still delivers zero tailpipe emissions, while the fuel efficiency shows gains of more than 15%.

  • Hyundai Intrado Concept Teaser

Hyundai are really bent on shaking the foundations of the automotive industry. At least, that’s what we are led to believe from the latest piece of news that’s come out of the South Korean manufacturer. The 2014 Geneva Motor Show will host the arrival of an “iconic” concept called the Hyundai Intrado. It’s supposed to be a super-space-age type of car that brings innovation, refinement and utter awesomeness. Hyundai go as far as claiming that the Intrado, with its super-lightweight structure made from a mixture of advanced materials, has the potential to change the way cars are constructed in the future.

Apparently, Intrado is a term from aerospace – the underside of an aircarft’s wing which produces lift. Hope they didn’t take that idea too seriously, or we fear that the grip of the Hyundai Intrado will be pretty abominable. The thing is, the concept should be drawing some inspiration from aircraft technologies – use of advanced materials, keeping it light, a form that follows function exclusively, and a highly efficient powertrain. Peter Schreyer, President & CDO of Hyundai Motor Group, commented:

“Hyundai Intrado envisages a motoring future that encapsulates the efficiency and freedom associated with flying. I believe in the power of mobility to deliver emotional as well as physical connections and this car helps us find again the joy of discovery. Intrado shows that future cars can be relevant and exciting.”

The body style is, actually, based on something called the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0. It  has been designed by the Hyundai Motor European R&D centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany. As for the efficient powertrain – the Intrado will make use of a lighter and less voluminous version of the one in the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell.

That’s all we have for now. Viva la revolution?

  • 2013 Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell

Hyundai has announced the 2013 ix35 Fuel Cell, which has been selected for the second consecutive year by the European Commission-backed Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) to demonstrate the real-world benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The world’s first production fuel cell electric vehicle, the ix35 Fuel Cell, will be made available throughout 2013 to members of the European Parliament, European Commission officials and other policymakers for test drives in Brussels, Belgium.

“We are delighted that the FCH JU has chosen the ix35 Fuel Cell as its European demonstration vehicle and look forward to working with them to promote the benefits of hydrogen and fuel cell technology.  We are sure that the leading policymakers and opinion-formers who drive this remarkable vehicle will find its ability to deliver performance and comfort without compromising its eco-friendly nature withtailpipe emissions highly compelling.”, commented President of Hyundai MotorEurope B.K. Rimsaid.

Using Hyundai’s proprietary technology, the ix35 Fuel Cell’s fuel cell stack converts hydrogen into electricity, which turns the vehicle’s motor. The only emission generated is water.

The ix35 Fuel Cell can be refuelled with hydrogen in only a few minutes. 0-100 km/h in 12.5 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph). It can travel up to 594 km (369 miles) on a single tank of fuel.
