  • Mercedes-Benz GLA

Mercedes-Benz is significantly upgrading the compact GLA SUV with numerous innovations and more extensive standard equipment. The new radiator grille with vertical louvres and horizontal fin enhances the powerful character. In addition, the bonnet with discreetly suggested power domes underlines the self-confident appearance. The redesigned front bumper with visual underride protection points to the GLA’s off‑road genes.

Added to this is the modernised light signature in the standard LED High Performance front headlights and the LED rear lights. Mercedes-Benz is expanding the range of options with the new Spectral Blue paint colour and four additional wheel designs. In the basic trim, the new GLA stands on 17-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels in high-gloss black with high-gloss turned surfaces. Optional 18- to 20-inch wheels are also available.

The free-standing double screen is one of the highlights of the significantly upgraded interior. It now includes a 7-inch and a 10.25-inch display as standard for the instrument cluster and multimedia screen respectively. Two 10.25-inch wide-screen displays are optionally available. They offer a holistic high-tech experience and enhance the open-plan architecture. The steering wheel of the current generation is upholstered in leather as standard; ARTICO imitation leather is available as an alternative. For the first time, a heated steering wheel rim is also available for the AMG Line.

Simplified offer logic with extensive standard equipment

The new GLA is equipped with comfort seats as standard. They are upholstered in ARTICO man-made leather and three-dimensionally embossed fabric in black. They are also optionally available in the trendy sagegrey colour. The Progressive equipment variant offers three interior colours: black, macchiato beige and sagegrey. In the AMG Line, the standard seat cover in ARTICO man-made leather/microfibre MICROCUT is now also available in bahia brown. A total of four upholstery colours are available in the AMG Line: black, bahia brown, sagegrey and the new shade red pepper combined with black. The fabric covering of the comfort seat is made of 100% recycled materials. In the case of the ARTICO/MICROCUT seat cover, this proportion is 65% in the seat mirror and 85% in the bottom fabric.

Mercedes-Benz has significantly upgraded the standard equipment of the GLA and tailored the offer logic even more precisely to specific customer wishes. For example, in addition to the leather steering wheel and LED front headlights, the basic equipment already includes Highbeam Assist, a backup camera and the USB package. From the Progressive equipment variant onwards, customers also receive the Parking Package and the Mirror Package. Further functional equipment is bundled into packages based on real customer behaviour. In terms of design features such as colours, upholstery, trim and wheels, those interested can configure the vehicles individually.

Latest MBUX generation with intuitive operation and adaptive software

The GLA now also features the latest generation of MBUX – with newly designed display styles: while “Classic” provides all relevant driver information, “Sporty” impresses with the dynamic rev counter. “Discreet” reduces the displays to the essential content. In combination with the three Navigation, Assistance and Services modes plus the 10 colour worlds of Ambient Light, there are numerous individualisation options. All previous functions such as Media, Phone, Vehicle etc. are still available. They can be conveniently operated via the touchscreen or the finger pads on the steering wheel.

The revision of the telematics system focused on a new design and improved performance. A new feature is the ability to connect wirelessly with smartphones via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto Wireless. For further connectivity, the GLA now has an additional USB-C port and increased USB charging power. All USB ports are now illuminated.

By activating online services in the Mercedes me app, the intelligent voice assistant becomes even more capable of dialogue and learning. The system gets to know the driver and remembers their typical settings or routes. At the appropriate moment, it suggests personalised infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions – precisely tailored to the respective driving situation. The driver can, of course, reject this suggestion with the “Do not suggest now” function, or permanently delete it with “Do not suggest again”. The vehicle will remember these wishes. Certain actions can be triggered even without saying “Hey Mercedes”. In addition, the voice assistant can explain vehicle functions. The audio “Tourguide” adds an exciting feature to the travel information as part of the “MBUX Voice Assistant” from Mercedes me – initially exclusively in Germany. When the “Hey Mercedes, start Tourguide” voice command is given, MBUX reads out interesting facts about places of interest along the route. The system responds to the approximately 3,400 brown signs along German motorways.

The optional Burmester® surround sound system, in conjunction with the latest MBUX generation, now features the immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity and depth. In addition, Dolby Atmos adapts to any playback environment, meaning fans can listen to music with unparalleled clarity that matches the artist’s original vision from the studio.

    Digital extra: new mini-games

With the optional individualisation package for Mercedes me connect services, a new digital extra is also making its way into the GLA. A selection of mini-games specially developed for the touchscreens and the touch control buttons on the steering wheel turn the compact SUV into a mobile games console: those who have a charging stop or want to pass time waiting can play alone or compete with fellow passengers. Currently, classic games such as Sudoku, Shuffle Puck, Pairs, Match 3 and a quiz are available.

The new GLA models also step up in terms of safety assistance. An upgrade of the Driving Assistance package enables more comfortable control of the Lane Keeping Assist through the Active Steering Control. The next generation of the Parking package also supports longitudinal parking. And it offers 360-degree visualisation for camera-assisted parking. The Trailer Manoeuvring Assist is also available for the GLA for the first time. It facilitates reverse manoeuvring with camera support. The prerequisite is the trailer hitch with ESP® trailer stabilisation in conjunction with the Parking Package with 360-degree camera.

Expanded range of electrified drive options

To further reduce consumption and emissions, the petrol engines in the new GLA are electrified throughout. The range includes four-cylinder units with seven- or eight-speed DCT dual-clutch transmissions as standard equipment. The mild hybrids are equipped with an additional 48-volt on-board power supply for the belt-driven starter-generator. Its briefly available additional power of 10 kW supports agility when starting or is used for quick boosting. The starter-generator also increases comfort: in addition to low-vibration and low-noise engine starting, it also enables coasting with the combustion engine switched off. In addition, it recuperates during braking and acceleration processes – and thus supplies the 12-volt on-board network as well as the 48-volt battery with electrical energy.

More power and range for the plug-in hybrid

The further developed plug-in hybrid drive of the GLA 250 e (preliminary figures: fuel consumption combined, weighted: 1.4-1.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined, weighted: 31-24 g/km; electricity consumption combined, weighted: 23.8-21.1 kWh/100 km) scores above all with increased performance. The higher usable energy content of the improved high-voltage battery also leads to a longer electric range. The output of the electric motor has increased by 5 kW to 80 kW while the system power remains the same. On the charging side, three options are still available: in addition to the 3.7 kW standard, the battery can now optionally be charged with alternating current and up to 11 kW. Furthermore, it is possible to charge the battery with direct current and up to 22 kW. This further reduces charging times. Mercedes-Benz has also updated the visualisation of the hybrid functions in the head unit.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine combines smooth running and superior power delivery with contemporary efficiency. It is available in three power and torque levels. Its features include single-stage turbocharging with variable turbine geometry. The cylinder head and crankcase are made of lightweight aluminium. The NANOSLIDE® coating developed by Mercedes-Benz reduces friction between the cylinder wall and the steel piston. This reduces consumption and emissions.

  • Why this Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 Needs Your Attention?

VAETH Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 Side ViewWhen German automotive power is combined with knowledge, precision and creativity, we have as a result a car like this VAETH Mercedes-Benz GLA 200. The specialists at VAETH are not only renowned for their great chassis modifications, but are also famous with their great engine techniques. The question here is what they have done to this Mercedes GLA 200? Let’s see.

First, the engine has been subjected to optimization. The car can actually produce a serial 156 hp (115 kW) and 250 Nm (185 lb-ft) of torque. After the upgrade with V20 tuning kit, the 1.6 liters engine boasts 184 hp (135 kW) and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque.

More power also means new exhaust. Therefore the tuners decided that the 270 EVO VA stainless steel down pipe sports exhaust system is the perfect choice. It also received oval end pipe in 110 x 90 mm and crimped end pipe edges on the right and left, making it look really good.

Steel flex tubes and Castrol SRF racing braking fluid are what improves the braking system. At last, new wheels are mandatory for VAETH, since the company wants to make everything perfect. Precisely, the car now runs on in-house made 18” rims in black: 8.5 x 18” at the front and 9.5 x 18” at the rear. Of course, they were coupled with the appropriate tires.

And this is why this Mercedes-Benz needed your attention. How would you rate it?

  • Urban Look Project: Carlsson Mercedes-Benz GLA

Carlsson-Mercedes-Benz-GLA-THUMBCarlsson is famous for tuning only Mercedes-Benz and smart vehicles. This time they show us their take on the GLA. What they have done is simply adorable: the GLA got stronger through performance upgrades; it also received new aerodynamic components, sports exhaust and alloy wheels. The designers call this project “Urban Look” for short. The vehicle initially is equipped with the AMG Sports package. To further emphasize the dynamic qualities of the car, Carlsson has added new front spoiler and grille.

We also see Carlsson’s badge in place of the three-pointed star. The rear skirt has cutouts for the trademark Carlsson four chromed oval tailpipes. These emerge from a stainless steel sports silencer designed to lower backpressure and produce a throatier soundtrack.

To offer versatility, the company has created for this project a total of three alloy wheel designs in different finishes. The first one is the Carlsson 1/10 style in 18 to 20 inches sizes, with diamond, graphite or Titanium Edition finishes. The second is the 1/16 RS design in 19 and 20-inches. It is shod with 255/40ZR19 and 255/35ZR20 tyres respectively. And at last, the highly polished 1/11 Ultra Light 21-inch forged wheel, mated with 265/30ZR21 tyres.

Speaking of performance upgrades, the tuners have taken into account the petrol and diesel engines in the GLA range. Staring with the output of the GLA200, it was increased to 187 horsepower (138 kW) with a peak torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft). Next, the Carlsson GLA250 produces 253 hp (186 kW) with torque peaking at 420 Nm (310 lb-ft).

Inside, Carlsson has used the finest leather and Alcantara for the seats and soft surfaces. The door, dashboard and centre console inserts can get either a wood or carbon-fibre finish. The cabin also got polished aluminium scuff plates with an illuminated Carlsson logo for driver and aluminium door lock pins, pedal set and footrest.

The last detail here is the four-piece floor mat set from soft black velour. Additionally, an exclusive, illuminated floor mats set made of soft velour is also available.

  • Eibach Releases Suspension Program For Mercedes-Benz GLA

Eibach-Mercedes-Benz-GLA-THUMBEibach Mercedes-Benz GLA has even a sportier look. The reason for this is the addition of tuning company’s suspension components which take care for vehicle’s length. In general the SUV has length x width x height of 4,417 x 1,804 x 1,494 millimeters. This tuning however, gives the driver the opportunity to individualize their vehicle by lowering or raising it.

The firs one is Eibach Pro-Kit Performance Springs. They lower vehicle’s centre of gravity and and contribute for better handling. For those who want a more aggressive look, there are available the innovative Eibach Pro-Lift-Kit Performance Lift Springs, which combine dynamics and comfort.

Both kits can be perfectly combined with company’s Anti-Roll-Kit Performance Sway Bars. They reduce GLA’s body roll and make it more dynamic. What finalizes the tuning of this Mercedes-Benz is the Eibach Pro-Spacer Wheel Spacers. They are made of aluminum and widen the track width.

As a reminder, 2014 GLA has an engine range which includes a 1.6 and 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol engines as well as 2.1 liter four-cylinder diesel engine. The first one powers the GLA200 and produces 156 hp (115 kW) and 250Nm (185 lb-ft) of torque. The second one is found in the GLA 250 model, and delivers 211 hp (155 kW) and 350Nm (259 lb-ft).

GLA 200 CDI and GLA 220 CDI are driven by the diesel engine, which produces respectively 136 hp (100 kW) and 300Nm (222 lb-ft) and 170 hp (125 kW) and 350Nm (259 lb-ft). The GLA 250 equipped with 4MATIC will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 233 km/h.

  • 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class – Off-Road Debut [video]

Mercedes-Benz has published a nice photo session and video with the all-new 2014 GLA-Class doing some off-road. The crossover comes with 4MATIC all-wheel drive system providing superb traction in all conditions.

Combining the unique suspension setup of the new GLA which aims to strike a balance between on- and off-road demands and the traction afforded by 4MATIC, the car thrived in the challenging conditions within the mine – its traction systems coping with the broken terrain and salt road tunnels with ease. The Intelligent Light System (ILS) fitted to the cars meant the eight-metre high tunnels (most of which are completely dark) were lit up spectacularly.

The GLA was driven in the empty spaces left behind by the mining of salt – spaces now being filled by a thriving DeepStore document storage business. Organisations such as the National Archives now store millions of physical files deep below the ground in a secure and extremely dry environment – the mine naturally remains at a constant 14 degrees – making it ideal for such purposes.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA is now available on the market with pricing starting from £25,080 OTR for the GLA 200 CDI.

  • Welcome To The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG

2015-Mercedes-Benz-GLA-45-AMG-shadow2015-Mercedes-Benz-GLA-45-AMG-mediumHere it is in the flesh: the world’s most powerful “series-produced four-cylinder engine”. It’s the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG and it’s fast. Like, 4.8-seconds-to-sixty-miles-an-hour kind of fast.

So, despite the tiny engine (2.0-liters), the GLA – AKA, the latest of the “Compact-SUVs” – offers 360 hp and 450 Nm of torque. How have they done that? Well, a twin-scroll turbocharger with a maximum charge pressure of 1.8 bar, and an air-to-water intercooler might be partly to blame. AMG engineers have fiddled with a host of other performance elements. Consider the forged pistons with friction-optimised rings, the spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, the weight-optimised crank mechanism or its all-aluminum case. Throw in a start/stop system and you get great gas mileage as well. 37.6 and CO2 emissions that will have you worry-free until 2017 at the least.

The overall power coming out gets crunched by a 7-speed AMG Speedshift DCT sports transmission. It has three operational modes, double-declutching and a Race Start function. The modes are “M” and “S” (manual and sport respectively) for lightning-fast shifting, and “C” for controlled-efficiency – a leisure type of mode that by proxy activates the start/stop system, so that’s the one to go with between the traffic lights during busy Mondays.2015-Mercedes-Benz-GLA-45-AMG-medium-2

Then there’s the sports exhaust system with an automatically controlled exhaust flap which responds accordingly to the engine speed and load condition. There’s a performance version of the same exhaust system available as an option. Either way, the sound is top-notch, so they tell us.

Albeit compact, this is an SUV, so you can’t just not provide a proper AWD drive. Hence, the AMG 4MATIC. Under normal circumstances, all the power goes to the front axle, but if the situation requires it, the drive ratio can be up to 50:50 between the front and back. All that transfer magic happens thanks to an electro-hydraulically controlled multiple-disc (talk about tongue twisters). At the same time stiff steering knuckles and new elastokinematics on the MacPharson front axle keep traction in check. The AMG sports suspension with specially tuned spring/damper units and bigger anti-roll bars provides for high lateral acceleration and reduced body roll in fast double bends. The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with specific, speed-dependent power assist ensures high steering precision and agility.

Finally, for stopping power you get these beautifully red painted, AMG-inscribed (optional) callipers. Paired with vented, cross-drilled discs, you get quite the combination.

  • 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA [teaser video]

Mercedes-Benz has released published a teaser video on Youtube with the 2014 GLA cross-over, which is expected to make its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The Concept model was presented earlier this year at the 2013 Auto Shanghai and the manufacturer is going to use a lot of the concepts features in the production model. However, some of the highlights are a bit toned down. The GLA is a compact crossover that will have a two-bar front grille, the new Mercedes-Benz’s headlight design, bulging fenders and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.

The engine range will be borrowed from B-Class: a 1.6 liter petrol with 122HP (90 kW), a 1.8 liter diesel with 136HP (100 kW) and a 1.6 liter turbocharged petrol with 156HP (115 kW). Of course, we also expect a GLA 45 AMG powered by world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol with 360HP (265 kW).

  • Mercedes-Benz GLA Teased Ahead Of Official Reveal

mercedes-benz-gla-THUMBThe new Mercedes-Benz GLA has just been teased on brand’s official Facebook page with couple of sketches. They give a vague idea of what the new model will look like. The two design sketches show the front and the rear of the car and we can surely say that it will look astonishing when it will be unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The A-Class based small crossover is going to enter a full production starting from next week, and it is expected to be seen in dealerships in the beginning of next year. This Mercedes-Benz vehicle has been revealed already in the form of a concept, which made a debut in June this year at Auto Shanghai.

So we are very much to see the same model in Frankfurt which is 4,380 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall and has a 2,690 mm long wheelbase. The GLA concept is also powered by the familiar 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol unit used in the A250. It generates 211 hp (155 kW).

The engine is matched to a 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox sending the power to the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Additional highlights of the concept feature bulging hood, raked windscreen, protection plates under the bumpers, roof rails, muscular wheel arches (with moldings), dual exhaust and 20” alloys covered by 255/45 R20 tires.

The only thing left in question is whether we are to see the same specifications in the production vehicle.
