Bentley is set to take part in this weekend’s Goodwood SpeedWeek with a showcase of performance-inspired models that together represent the sporting ethos of the brand. Combining the very best elements of the Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival and Goodwood’s renowned Members’ Meetings, Goodwood SpeedWeek will take place on 16 -18 October 2020 at the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Bentley is taking this opportunity to showcase three performance-focused models, debuting the agility of the new Flying Spur V8 and the power of the Bentayga Speed in their global public debuts, and demonstrating the extraordinary dynamic and visual performance of the Continental GT V8.

Looking to the future, and inspired by Bentley’s deep understanding of its forward-thinking customers, the EXP 100 GT concept car unveiled last year on the company’s 100th birthday embodies a future vision commensurate with Bentley’s status as the world’s most sought after luxury car brand. The award winning concept car will be on display at SpeedWeek with a dedicated report on the car to be live-streamed on Sunday morning.

Global Debut of the Flying Spur V8
Based on research, customer feedback and trends of customer usage, the new Flying Spur V8 has been engineered to deliver driver-focused ability, whilst offering passengers the refinement, comfort and technology expected from a grand limousine.

The Flying Spur V8 offers a more driver-centric experience via increased agility and a more characterful engine note, whilst benefiting from increased range between fuel stops and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

The Flying Spur V8 is 100 kg lighter than the W12 version, making the vehicle feel more agile and responsive with a distinctive personality of its own. The new model includes the latest powertrain and chassis advancements: Adaptive Air Suspension, Torque Vectoring by Brake, Drive Dynamics Control, and Electric Steering, all of which are standard features. Furthermore, customers can add Bentley’s pioneering 48V electric active anti-roll technology (Bentley Dynamic Ride), and Electronic All-Wheel Steering for even greater agility.

At the heart of the vehicle is Bentley’s 4.0-litre, twin turbocharged V8 engine, which produces a peak power of 550 PS (542 bhp, 404 kW) and uses twin-scroll turbos to reach its maximum torque of 770 Nm at just under 2000 rpm

The 90 degree “V” configuration, cross-plane crankshaft and eight perfectly balanced cylinders give the engine its characteristic and unmistakable V8 engine sound and the impressive power output provides a 0-60 mph time of 4.0 secs (0-100 km/h, 4.1 secs) and a top speed of 198 mph (318 km/h).

The Flying Spur V8 will be driven in the First Glance class by Bentley’s Head of Chassis Mechatronics, Andrew Unsworth.

    The Most Powerful Bentayga
The new Bentayga Speed takes the Bentayga’s extraordinary abilities to new levels, utilising the 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged engine that delivers peak power of 635 PS (626 bhp). Effortless acceleration is always guaranteed thanks to 900 Nm (664 lb.ft) of torque, available as a plateau from 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm. The assembly of the W12 powertrain takes the skilled engine builders approximately ten per cent of the total hours required for the manufacture of the Bentayga Speed.

With exceptional performance, comfort and handling, maximum speed is 190 mph (306 km/h), while the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint is delivered in 3.9 seconds.

To match the elevated levels of performance, the Bentayga Speed sports a purposeful exterior look. Dark-tint headlights, body-coloured side skirts, unique front and rear bumpers and a striking, elongated tailgate spoiler characterise the Speed’s performance credentials. Dark-tint radiator and bumper grilles, a unique 22-inch wheel design available in two finishes (painted and dark tint) and Speed signature badging add to the sporting design cues.

At the rear, the exhaust finishers are now the oval design that signifies a W12 powertrain. Dark-tint tail lamps complete the Speed exterior signature.
For SpeedWeek, the Bentayga Speed wears a livery featuring Bentley’s Beyond100 future strategy – more details of which are to be revealed soon. It will be driven in the First Glance class by former Bentley Boy, and winner of the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans behind the wheel of a Bentley Speed 8, Guy Smith.

Continental GT – Extraordinary Power and Style
The third-generation Bentley Continental GT combines spirited, focused performance with handcrafted luxury and cutting-edge technology, to create the finest Grand Tourer ever produced.

The muscular exterior design, created using revolutionary technology, results in a lightweight, yet stiff, body. The engine is positioned further back to improve weight distribution, resulting in driver-focused, dynamic performance.

The Active All-Wheel-Drive System varies the front-to-rear torque split dependent upon the driving situation, and the vehicle will use rear-wheel drive as much as possible during normal driving for optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. Based on the conditions and the driver’s behaviour, the system will also send drive to the front axle as required. This reduces the understeer effect from fixed all-wheel drive, as well as increasing driver engagement for those who revel in the dynamic attributes of the Continental GT.

For those wanting to emphasise the sporting credentials of their Continental GT, the Styling and Blackline Specifications are available. Crafted by hand to exact tolerances following an extensive development programme, the Styling Specification includes a front bumper splitter, side skirts with metallic Bentley badges, rear diffuser and boot lid spoiler in high gloss carbon fibre increases the vehicles presence and muscular aesthetics. Blackline Specification replaces all exterior chrome brightware with gloss black versions.

For customers who already own a Bentley, the Styling Specification can be retrofitted via any Bentley Dealership.

The Continental GT V8, finished in stunning Orange Flame, will be driven in the Supercar class by Bentley’s Functional Manager for Vehicle Dynamics, Andy Marson.

The Future of Luxury and Grand Touring
The Bentley EXP 100 GT concept car was born from pure Bentley DNA and inspired by the company’s deep understanding of the desires of its intelligent, forward-thinking customers. Beautifully styled, it embraces Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a means to reassert the car as a place for creating, experiencing and capturing extraordinary human experiences and emotions.

Designed from the inside out and taking advantage of an all-electric platform, Bentley EXP 100 GT reimagines the Grand Tourer for the world of 2035. This is a world of shared luxury experiences where passenger and driver enjoy equal status in their enjoyment of their extraordinary journeys. The car’s presence and impressive exterior proportions are reminiscent of many of Bentleys’ historic Grand Tourers. The result is a future vision commensurate with Bentley’s status as the world’s most sought after luxury car brand.

  • Bentley Flying Spur

    2020-Bentley-Flying-Spur1

Bentley is introducing a new Styling Specification for the Flying Spur, allowing customers to emphasize the sporting credentials of the world’s fastest production sedan and give the car an, even more, sporting aesthetic to match its unrivaled performance.

The Flying Spur sets the luxury benchmark in agility and dynamism using the latest chassis technology including active all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, torque vectoring, and 48V electric anti-roll bar system – first introduced by Bentley. The aesthetics of the new Styling Specification complement the Flying Spur’s peerless capabilities, ensuring that Bentley’s new flagship looks as stunning as it is to drive.

Crafted by hand in high gloss carbon fiber to exact tolerances following an extensive development program, the Styling Specification includes a front bumper splitter, side skirts with metallic Bentley badges, rear diffuser, and boot lid spoiler.

    Enhanced sporting appeal
Like the veneer that adorns the cabin space, the carbon fiber exterior components are mirror-matched across the centreline of the car for precise visual appeal. The carbon fiber weave is a 2×2 twill pattern, woven in the same direction for all components to ensure consistency. The carbon fiber is laid-up in multiple layers, each oriented for optimum strength and durability whilst maintaining minimal weight.

The side skirts include an exquisite detail with the inclusion of a three-dimensional electroformed Bentley badge. The profile of the badge was developed especially for the Styling Specification, to minimize the risk of air bubbles forming in the lacquer overcoat while still providing the eye-catching faceted appearance.

The Styling Specification is specifically designed to complement the aerodynamic performance of the Flying Spur. The first designs are assessed and refined using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software for aerodynamic performance including front and rear lift and overall drag. Simulations are also made of the effect on powertrain cooling, brake cooling, and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Electrical testing seeks to minimize any effect that the carbon fiber parts may have on vehicle systems from PDC (park distance control) to radar systems and antennae for onboard communications and entertainment.

Only once these virtual assessments are complete are the first physical prototypes manufactured, before being refined in the wind tunnel and on the test track. The parts are also assessed across all driving conditions up to and including top speed, for stability, feel, and performance under both acceleration and braking to ensure that the Bentley driving dynamic is maintained.

Once the functionality is signed-off, the parts are assessed through a variety of validation tests. These include durability programs – including overall vehicle tests of 100,000 km – to abuse testing such as wading, kerb strikes, and rough roads. Rig testing in Bentley’s Quality lab assesses performance through the rigors of vibration, thermal cycling, point loading, and impacts.

Once all test and development work is completed, the manufacturing process is refined over a number of development cycles to give consistent, repeatable manufacturing tolerances meeting the exacting requirements expected of a Bentley. 3D scanning and comparison to a nominal metrology buck assess manufacturing accuracy.

The Styling Specification is available to order through Bentley’s network of retailers and can be specified when a new car is ordered or retrofitted at a later date to enhance a customer’s existing car.

    Performance Orientated Driving Dynamics
When the new Bentley Flying Spur was introduced in 2019 it set a new benchmark in performance, agility, and dynamism. A key element when designing the new Flying Spur was moving the front axle position forwards to improve weight distribution, enabling improved dynamic precision, handling, and balance when coupled with active all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, and Bentley Dynamic Ride.

Depending on the road conditions, the powertrain can vary up to 480 Nm of torque from the rear of the car to the front axle offering greater grip and driveability, through the active all-wheel-drive system. The front end now feels the much lighter and turn-in response is also dramatically improved. The understeer effect experienced with fixed all-wheel drive is virtually eliminated, making the car feel more balanced over all.

Torque distribution varies according to the selected Drive Dynamics Mode. In Sport, the system limits the available torque to the front axle to 280 Nm, maintaining a higher torque level at the rear for a more dynamic feel. Torque is also managed across each axle by a torque-vectoring-by-brake system.

Electronic all-wheel steering enhances both stability at highway speeds and maneuverability around town. During low-speed maneuvers, the system steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels. This has the effect of shortening the wheelbase, reducing the turning circle nearly to that of the Continental GT, increasing agility, and making parking noticeably easier.

During high-speed maneuvers, the system steers the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels, increasing stability and making overtaking and lane-changes more assured. Electronic all-wheel steering means no compromise between high-speed confidence and low-speed convenience.

The Flying Spur uses three-chamber air springs which contain 60 percent more air volume compared to the previous model. This allows more scope to vary from sporting levels of spring stiffness to luxury limousine refinement depending upon which mode the driver has selected. The new car features CDC (Continuous Damping Control), which allows continuous regulation of the dampers.

Four ride height sensors constantly measure the distance between the axle and the body. If the system detects a difference compared with the normal height, the air volume in the springs is corrected accordingly to restore the normal height.

The Bentley Dynamic Ride System is designed to improve both handling and ride comfort. A 48-volt system controls an electronic actuator unit which manages the stiffness of the anti-roll bar, changing the stiffness on-demand to combat cornering forces and keep the Flying Spur level.

  • STARTECH Debuts Two Bentley Projects in Frankfurt Starting with the Flying Spur

STARTECH Bentley Flying Spur Front ViewSTARTECH is displaying at the Frankfurt Motor Show tomorrow not one but two Bentley models. The first one is the Flying Spur, which will be reviewed right now, and the other one… we’ll you have to wait until the next article to know which is it. Unlike, the previously reviewed BRABUS, this car only features an extensive tuning for its exterior and interior. But there is a promise that STARTECH tuners will also offer professional performance upgrades for the V8 and W12 engines in the near future.

    Exterior

Next, the tuners integrated fiber-optic daytime running lights that match the appearance of the spoiler lip with the swept-up flaps. The wide air intake in the front bumper is emphasized via two additional panels.

STARTECH Bentley Flying Spur Rear View

Continuing to the rear, the Flying Spur now has even more dynamic appearance, due to the addition of new diffuser into the rear bumper. There is also a very special feature: the innovative LED module which combines backup lights and rear fog lamp in one module. It also has new design, which is reminiscent of the tail lamp of a modern-day Formula 1 racecar. In addition, there are special panels to the left and right of the diffuser, which frame the four new tailpipes and blend them perfectly with the rear profile.

A STARTECH sports exhaust system is available for this Bentley. The ‘thing’ about it is that it features electronically controlled system of butterfly valves that allow the driver to control the exhaust note.

    Wheels & Tires

STARTECH Bentley Flying Spur Wheels and Tires

To make the visual stance of the Bentley even more impressive, STARTECH had to chose the perfect wheels. So they decided to use the Monostar G forged alloys in size of 22-inches. High-performance tires of size 295/30 ZR 22 front and back perfectly fill out the wheel wells.

    Interior

Stepping inside of the car, one sees STARTECH special treatment for this Bentley. As you can see, the interior designers selected an unusual combination of light brown and white leather. This bi-color theme was accentuated via light blue highlights. The work inside also features leather inserts on the seats, door panels and headliner. At last, inside, there is also a custom made wood from white cherry wood.

A more upright chrome grille sits between the pairs of LED headlamps. At the rear one can see a longer and lower boot lid and horizontal single ellipse LED tail lamps combine with a new interpretation of the Bentley “Horse Shoe” feature line.

As a matter of fact, the interior of the new Flying Spur includes 600 new parts, with only the sun visors, grab handles, armrests and some of the front console and controls carried over from the previous generation. The model is available in both four- and five-seat configurations, and includes redesigned front and rear seats trimmed in natural premium-quality leather.

The interior designers have applied the finest wood veneers to finish the cabin of the new Flying Spur. They have used almost ten square metres of sustainably sourced natural wood per car. To enhance the “wrap-around” feel of the forward cabin, the veneer of the dashboard meets that of the doors in a perfectly aligned curve, giving the impression of an unbroken arc of wood around the interior.

Furthermore, the new model will now run on 19” tyres, which have been specifically developed in order to deliver optimum balance between refinement and handling performance.

More importantly, in it is featured Bentley’s most powerful engine – the 6.0-litre, twin turbocharged, 48-valve W12. It generates 625 hp (460 kW) at 6,000 rev/min and a staggering 800 Nm (580 lb ft) of torque from only 2000 rev/min. Other important details are that the new Flying Spur delivers a combined cycle fuel economy of 19.2 mpg (14.7 litres/100 km), and CO2emissions of 343 g/km.

In terms of aerodynamism, there is something interesting around the car. As the new Flying Spur approaches 200 mph (322 km/h) top speed, the ride height is automatically lowered via the air suspension system. This enhances vehicle stability and optimises aerodynamic balance.

In addition, the new car has a two-stage lowering strategy, firstly lowering by 5 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear at 121 mph (195 km/h) and then by a further 8 mm and 13 mm respectively at 149 mph (240 km/h). The multiple-mode Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system is recalibrated to work in combination with the new chassis specification.

Flying Spur will be offered in range of seventeen standard exterior paint colours including Dark Cashmere (a new color added to the palette). The extended paint range of over 100 colours is joined by Damson.
