  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate

As functional as its predecessor, as intelligent and customisable as never before: The new E‑Class Estate, model series 214, impresses in many areas. The design has also changed: The roofline is more dynamically designed compared to its predecessor, and at the same time the new E-Class Estate scores again with functionality and load compartment volume. Combined with the raked rear window, the overall appearance is progressive.

Like the Saloon before it, the Estate not only continues the long model history of the classic E-Class, but also bridges the gap to the avant-garde trendsetters from Mercedes-EQ with its new design. Balanced proportions are part of the appearance of a classic estate car. They are defined by the short front overhang, the long bonnet with powerdomes, the longer wheelbase and the balanced rear overhang.

With its distinctive side profile, the Estate clearly sets itself apart from the competition. The two character lines familiar from the Saloon create a powerfully stretched car body and give the Estate a sporty and stylish appearance. Sophisticated, three-dimensional and optimised down to the last detail, the surface finish exudes elegance.

A black panel-like surface connects the radiator grille with the headlamps. This insert in high-gloss black is visually reminiscent of the Mercedes-EQ models. The three-dimensionally designed radiator grille is either progressive or classic, depending on the equipment line. A chrome-framed radiator grille backlit by optical fibres is optionally available for all lines (Avantgarde, Exclusive and AMG Line). The new E-Class Estate features LED High Performance headlamps as standard. As an optional extra, DIGITAL LIGHT is available without and with a projection function. All headlamp variants offer a distinctive day and night design. As a typical feature of the brand, the daytime running lights take the shape of an eyebrow.

Precisely designed chrome elements as well as the progressively styled, two-part rear lamps characterise the rear-end design. Thanks to its large opening, the load compartment can be used in a variety of ways. The design team has reinterpreted the rear lamps in terms of their contours and inner workings. With great depth of detail and partly animated functions, the interior design contributes to the vehicle’s high value appeal. The unique star motif makes the day and night design of the rear lamps unmistakable. The two light sections in the side wall and boot lid are visually connected. This further emphasises the width of the rear. The reflectors have been relocated to the bumper. Because this allowed the load compartment opening to be particularly large, this increases the utility value on the one hand and makes the rear view look even wider on the other.

Even more spacious in the rear and the familiar high utility value

Compared to its predecessor, the E-Class Estate has increased in width by 28 millimetres. This gives the rear passengers even more space: The elbow room in the rear is 1519 millimetres – 25 millimetres more than before. The wheelbase has increased by 22 millimetres to 2961 millimetres. As a result, rear-seat passengers enjoy more knee room (84 millimetres; plus 9 millimetres) and leg room (934 millimetres; plus 15 millimetres). The load compartment can be expanded from 615 litres to up to 1830 litres. In the plug-in hybrid model, the luggage capacity is 460–1675 litres, and the load compartment is level there, too.

The seat backrests can be split and folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio. Operation is by two push buttons on the left and right side of the rear seat backrest. The Estate model features the EASY-PACK tailgate as standard. The tailgate opens and closes conveniently at the touch of a button: using the button on the ignition key, the switch in the driver’s door or the release handle on the tailgate. The retractable luggage cover and dividing net (both standard) have a two-piece design. Each has its own roller cassette.

MBUX Superscreen as a highlight of the interior design

The dashboard makes for the digital experience in the interior. If the E-Class Estate is equipped with the optional front passenger screen, the large glass surface of the MBUX Superscreen extends to the central display. Visually detached from this is the driver’s display in the driver’s field of vision. The models without a passenger display feature a large trim element that extends to the centre. Visually detached, the central display appears to float above the concave surface of this trim element.

The front section of the instrument panel is illuminated by the light strip of the Active Ambient Lighting. This runs in a wide arc from the windscreen, past the A-pillars and into the doors. This creates a generous feeling of space. An apparently free-floating control array in the upper section of the door panels matches the look of the glass surfaces of the screens.

The centre console is designed as a homogeneous unit and merges in a straight line into the lower section of the dashboard. At the front, a stowage compartment with lid and cup holders is integrated into the three-dimensionally shaped trim element. There is a soft padded armrest in the rear part of the centre console.

The door centre panel merges seamlessly into the armrest with a concave sweep. The front section here is designed as a metallic high-tech element. It serves as a grab and closing handle, and incorporates the switches for the power windows. Another highlight is the free-floating control array incorporating the door opener and the controls for the seat functions.

The contours of the seat surface and backrest flow elegantly from the inside to the outside, and appear to float above the base of the seat thanks to their layer design. Indented vertical lines follow the outer contour, widening out towards the top.

A plug-in hybrid is already available at launch

Thanks to systematic electrification and intelligent downsizing, the new E-Class sets new standards in efficiency. The combustion engines are four and six-cylinder units from the current modular Mercedes‑Benz engine family FAME (Family of Modular Engines). Accordingly, the engine range plays a major role in the flexibility of the international production network, with needs-based electrification.

In addition to turbocharging, both the diesel and petrol engines feature intelligent support from an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). They are therefore mild hybrids. Thanks to a new battery, the power of the electric motor has been increased from 15 to 17 kW and the boost torque to 205 Nm. Further mild hybrid models will follow.

With the E 300 e (combined fuel consumption, weighted (WLTP): 0.9-0.6 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions, weighted (WLTP): 20-13 g/km, combined power consumption, weighted (WLTP): 21.4-19.1 kWh/100 km) a plug-in hybrid is also available at market launch already. With an electric output of 95 kW (129 hp) and an all‑electric range of up to over 100 kilometres (WLTP), this model will on many days be on the road purely electrically, without the use of the petrol engine. More plug-in hybrids with diesel combustion engines will follow.

  • Brabus Mercedes-Benz C300d Estate D30

Mercedes-Benz offers the C-Class of the W/S 206 series ex-factory with an AMG Line body styling kit as an option. In order to give the bodywork components of this sporty line an even more dynamic appearance, the BRABUS design team has developed tailor-made components that are manufactured in OEM quality from high-grade PUR. The detachable parts add further sporty character to both body styles. What is more: the BRABUS front spoiler corners, which attach to the left and right end of the front bumper, are shaped like flaps and reduce front-axle lift at high speeds, resulting in further optimized handling stability.

  • Volkswagen Golf Estate

The new Volkswagen Golf Variant R-Line

The Golf Estate arrives in the UK available to order now in a diverse range of specification and drivetrain configurations split across three new trim levels: Life, Style and R-Line. The new Alltrack variant also makes its first appearance and is characterised by increased ground clearance, an all-terrain look and 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive.

The initial wave of engine and gearbox options in the new Golf Estate opens with a 1.0-litre 110 PS engine, fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, but available also as an eTSI-designated 48V mild-hybrid powerplant with the brand’s 7-speed DSG transmission. Depending on the chosen Golf Estate trim level, the other engines available to order from today are a 1.5-litre 130 PS TSI, 1.5-litre 150 PS TSI, 2.0-litre 115 PS TDI and 2.0-litre 150 PS TDI, all available with 6-speed manual gearboxes. In addition, 1.5-litre, 130 PS eTSI and 150 PS eTSI mild-hybrid units are also available, exclusively with the 7-speed DSG transmissions as standard. A 2.0-litre 200 PS TDI engine with 7-speed DSG and 4MOTION is reserved exclusively for the Golf Alltrack.

Performance figures for the range of engines offered in the Golf Estate and Golf Alltrack are undeniably respectable: the Alltrack is capable of 0 to 62 mph in as little as 7.1 seconds (2.0-litre 200 PS TDI), while even the entry level 1.0-litre 110 PS TSI unit will carry the Golf Estate to 62 mph from a standing start in a sprightly 10.5 seconds.

Clearly identifiable as a sibling of the new Golf hatchback, today’s Estate family of models features a longer roof line and more muscular shoulder section which combine to give it a more overtly sporty appearance than its predecessor.

The increase in length also alters the car’s proportions, making the Golf Estate appear more substantial but also lower. The new model is 4,633 mm in length and now boasts a wheelbase of 2,686 mm (respectively 349 mm and 66 mm increases compared with its predecessor). The new Golf Estate is 1,789 mm wide and 1,455 mm high (without roof rails). In comparison, the current Golf hatchback is 4,284 mm long and boasts a wheelbase of 2,619 mm. The height and width of both Golf versions are identical.

Larger external dimensions translate into more useable space inside this new estate. Five occupants can be transported comfortably, while the car’s extra capacity is most noticeable in the rear where maximum legroom increases from 903 mm to 941 mm. Luggage space is enhanced, too, and passengers can stow their belongings in a generously dimensioned boot. When loaded to the top edge of the rear seat backrest, today’s Golf Estate offers 611 litres of storage space (six litres more than the Golf Estate Mk 7) and when loaded to the roof with the integrated luggage net partition up to the front seat backrests, the volume increases to 1,642 litres (up 22 litres).

The Golf Estate Life, Style and R-Line, and the Golf Alltrack, all offer an ascending selection of features that help mark out the new models as leaders in the fields of technology, safety and driver assistance – while every new car boasts a generous selection of standard-fit equipment.

The entry-level Life specification includes many features not traditionally seen as ‘entry level’ such as automatic LED headlamps with separate LED daytime running lights; dynamic headlight range control; tail lights incorporating LED technology; a body-coloured rear spoiler; ‘Norfolk’ 16-inch alloy wheels; interior ambient lighting with 10-colour adjustment; leather trimmed gear knob and multifunction steering wheel; Discover Navigation system with 10-inch colour touchscreen; FM and DAB digital radio receiver with six speakers; Bluetooth connectivity; App-Connect and the Volkswagen eCall emergency SOS call service.

Life buyers also benefit from the likes of Active Info Display Digital Cockpit Pro: a 10.25-inch high resolution TFT dash display screen with customisable menus; Car2X connectivity; Dynamic Road Sign Display; Front Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control; Lane Assist and parking sensors front and rear.

Step up to the Style trim and the range of design, comfort, safety and convenience features grows still further. Among the highlights for Style buyers, in addition to the features found in Life models, are: ‘Belmont’ 17-inch alloy wheels; LED ‘Plus’ headlights; High Beam Assist; front sports seats; 30-colour interior ambient lighting; 3-Zone climate control air conditioning; Side Assist and Traffic Jam Assist; and Lane Change Assist.

Golf Estate R-Line buyers can look forward to even more in the way of standard-fit equipment with, in addition to the above, 17-inch Valencia grey metallic alloy wheels; R-line body-coloured bumpers; tinted glass from the B pillar backwards; R-Line door and side trim panels; an R-Line three-spoke heated leather steering wheel; sports suspension; Driving Profile Selection; and progressive steering.

The Golf Alltrack returns with rugged, SUV-inspired styling and 4MOTION all-wheel drive which endows it with strong capability beyond paved roads. The model is also marked out as a top Golf by its honeycomb-design fog light clusters – also seen on the GT family of variants. The Alltrack receives 17-inch ‘Ronda’ alloy wheels, illuminated front grille and silver roof rails, while both driver and passengers can enjoy 3Zone climate control. Like the GT family of models, the Golf Alltrack also benefits from an enhanced suite of driver assistance systems, with Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, Side Assist and Lane Change Assist included as standard.

At launch today, the Life specification is available with three petrol engines, each with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, or the option to include a 7-speed DSG alongside a 48V mild-hybrid system. These are available in 1.0-litre, three-cylinder 110 PS, or 1.5-litre, four-cylinder 130 PS and 150 PS versions. The Life’s diesel option is the frugal and flexible 2.0-litre 115 PS TDI, allied to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

While Style buyers can’t opt for the 1.0-litre engines, they have the additional choice of a 2.0-litre 150 PS TDI mated to either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG. R-Line models are equipped exclusively with the higher-powered, 150 PS petrol and diesel units, each offered with a choice between a manual or automatic transmission. The range-topping, 2.0-litre 200 PS TDI with 7-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive is reserved for the Golf Alltrack, and is perfect for traversing trickier terrains than asphalt.

  • ŠKODA Has Finally Granted Customers and Fans With Details About 2015 Superb Estate Model

2015 ŠKODA Superb Estate has finally came with specifications and pricing. The vehicle is now available with large range of engine, transmission and pack options, which make the car fit almost any personality. Let’s check out what the Superb Estate has to offer.

Just like the hatchback model, the Superb Estate is available with the incredible range of 7 (SEVEN!) engine models and optional DSG automatic and 4×4 transmission. The engines are four TSI petrol and three TDI diesel units, which power vary between 120 hp (88 kW) to 280 hp (205 kW). Impressive, isn’t it?

Moreover, the Superb Estate available with five trim packs: S, SE, SE Business, SE L Executive and Laurin & Klement, that, as said above, are capable to satisfy the needs of almost every customer. But despite the wide range of tweaks and extras, ŠKODA team managed to keep wonderful prices for even the special models.

And as a next-gen vehicle, the Superb Estate comes and with next-gen technology gadgets. Get ready for a safe and pleasurable drive with goodies such the Virtual Pedal system, SmartLing, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Traffic Alert, latest generation of Park Assist and Traffic Jam Assist.

Now, let’s talk about the different trims and the additions they bring. In fact, all Superb models come with alloy wheels, air conditioning, LED rear lights, DAB radio, Bluetooth and touch screen multimedia system. So, here are the differences with each trim:

SE models offer 17-inch Helios alloy wheels, dual-zone air conditioning, rear parking sensors and front fog lights. What is impressive about this trim option is that, it also includes Adaptive Cruise Control and SmartLink: there are just a few more such pleasurable experiences like connecting and controlling your smart phone via large touch screen monitor. You are still unsatisfied? Don’t worry. ŠKODA team prepared you and an umbrella in case you forgot yours at home in a rainy day. Yes, the car comes with an umbrella. The ŠKODA team surely had some issues with the UK weather..

We continue with the Business model. If you happen to choose this one, you get even greater comfort and technology add-ons. The trim offers Alcantara upholstery, front and rear parking sensors and sunset glass. Furthermore, you get a navigation system and a large touch screen monitor. Nice, huh? And when it comes to performance, the Business trim offers customers two engine variations: 1.6-Liter TDI 120 hp (88 kW) and 2.0 TDI, that brings a total of 150 hp (110kW). The models also includes a 6-speed manual gearbox or the special DSG gearbox.

Next is the SE L Executive, that grants owners with even more goodies. Bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime lights, heather upholstery, heated seats and Columbus satellite navigation system with 8-inch touch screen. 18-inch Zenith alloy wheels are also included. Sadly, the trim doesn’t come with umbrella.

And for customers, who are still not impressed with the trims so far, ŠKODA offers and something special. The Laurin & Klement trim brings stylish 18-inch Pegasus alloy wheels, tri-zone climate control, heated rear seats, 10-speaker CANTON audio system and piano black components. The technology goodies include Blind Spot Detection, Lane Assist, Park Assist, KESSY keyless entry and start system, TV tuner and Virtual Pedal.  But if I have to be honest, I’m not sure if this particular trim offers and umbrella. Still, it sounds enough luxurious for me.

  • Loder1899 Ford Focus TDCI

Loder1899-Ford-Focus-Estate-thumbAgain a tuned up estate. This time it’s from the guys at Loder1899 and the car in question is a Ford Focus, so that’s unusual. And by unusual, we mean rare and exclusive. It’s a fairly flexible program that makes use of an aerodynamic kit, a few suspension and wheels options plus a power enhancement for…the diesel range.

At the front we can find a “cupspoiler”, on the sides of the focus, you can go for the carbon or non-carbon side skirts. At the back, an apron with the diffuser is supposed to keep the back end planted…because otherwise you might skid off the road while doing power slides on the way to the grocery store.

If required, the Focus can be lowered with a suspension kit by around 35 mm. There’s a choice between a single or dual pipe exhaust system and a wheel spectrum that ranges from 17 to 20 inches.

The Loder1899 Ford Focus Estate we see here is a 2.0-liter TDCI that has 140 bhp as standard. By fitting the company’s ECU upgrade, we can get 55 bhp more. So that’s 195 bhp and 395 Nm of torque as soon as 2000 rpm. The top speed is now 220 km/h and the zero to 100 km/h time stands at 8.4 seconds as opposed to 8.9 seconds. The one thing that has remained pretty much the same ford this Ford Focus, is the economy- 5.0 l/100 km on the combined cycle.
