  • Audi e-tron quattro concept is the Next Tesla Model S Competitor

Audi e-tron quattro concept Front ViewAudi e-tron quattro concept has been revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show and it seems that it is the next competitor of Tesla Model S as well as of Porsche Mission E, which we have shown you a few days ago. Just like Mission E, Audi’s electric concept has 500 km range on a single charge. However, it is little less powerful: it can produce only 503 hp in comparison to Porsche’s 600 hp.

With its flow-enhanced design, this concept achieves a drag coefficient of 0.25. By the way, it is pretty obvious that this EV is Audi’s official statement about the future of electric mobility. At first glance it seems that the e-tron quattro concept has got it all: it is sporty, efficient and suitable for everyday use. But let’s see in details what it is all about.

    Electric Concept

This car utilizes the power of three electric motors. The first one drives the front axle, while the other two – the rear axle. Their total output is 320 kW or 435 hp. As a matter of fact, the driver can mobilize up to 503 hp (370 kW) and over 800 Nm (590.0 lb-ft) of torque, but this happens only temporarily while boosting. Given this force, the concept study can perform like a sports car.

The acceleration time is also impressive, and especially when we talks about an EV. The 0-100 km/h (62.1 mph) sprint can be covered in 4.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited at 210 km/h (130.5 mph).

Integrated into the floor of the passenger’s compartment is a large lithium-ion battery. The battery has a capacity of 95 kWh, which enables a range of more than 500 kilometers (310.7 mi). How about the charging? The Combined Charging System (CCS) comes in help when charging with DC or AC electrical current. And for a full charge (with DC) at a charging column with an output of 150 kW takes just 50 minutes.

There is even an alternative: the concept is equipped with Audi Wireless Charging technology for contactless induction charging, and there is also a large solar roof which provides electricity for the drive system battery on sunny days.

    Aerodynamic Exterior

Audi e-tron quattro concept Rear View

It is rather a true statement that it is a necessity for an electric vehicle to have aerodynamic exterior. Audi e-tron quattro concept is 4.88 meters (16.0 ft) long, 1.93 meters (6.3 ft) wide and just 1.54 meters (5.1 ft) high. Its forms are so fantastically managed ad designed that its drag coefficient measures just 0.25.

And this is one of the main reasons for the long range. And even the rearview mirrors have been removed for better aerodynamics. They have been replaced with cameras and it seems that this is one of the newest and most preferable technologies of the future of driving.

Other cool features in the exterior include the front headlights with Matrix laser technology. The bottom section houses five lighting elements, each of which combines an LED luminary with an extremely flat OLED element (organic light-emitting diode).  As a mater of fact, this Matrix OLED technology is currently under development for future use in production use. The rear lights also have two sections with nine red OLED units for the tail light function and three more below.

    The Interior

The cabin is spacious and comfortable, and suitable for four persons. All displays inside use OLED technology contributing for the further development of the new Audi virtual cockpit. Below the fully-digital instrument cluster are two touch displays with black glass and a subtle aluminum frame. The left display is controlled by the driver when he or she wants to change the lights and the systems for piloted driving. The right display is for media and navigation management.

There are also two more OLED displays for the drive system status, climate control and other information functions. At the rear, the passengers sit on comfortable individual seats. They can connect via LTE module to the Internet.

We are definitely excited to see if and when this concept will eventually come in production. Would it be a true rival of the Model S? Your thoughts?

  • Audi e-tron quattro Concept Revealed with First Sketches. Debuts in Frankfurt

2015 Audi e-tron quattro Concept Side SketchAudi e-tron quattro concept is going to be one of the main attractions at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2015 in Frankfurt in September. Since there is less than a month until the premiere, Audi has released the first official sketches of the all-electric sporty SUV. Five images give us a very good idea of what we are to expect from brand’s first large-series electric car.

The e-tron quattro concept is a pioneer in its segment. It has been designed from the ground up as an electric car, thus being the first such vehicle in its segment. The visual appearance of the model is built around the design of Audi “Aerosthetics” concept.

The images also show a typical design for the brand with the characteristic SUV body and the flat, coupe-like but spacious cabin.

This means that it combines technical improvements, which reduce the aerodynamic drag and at the same time are so creative that they also appear as design solutions. For instance, there are movable aerodynamic elements at the front, while on the sides and at the rear the specialists at Audi have enhanced the air flow around the car. Moreover, the aerodynamically optimized underbody is entirely closed.

    The Battery

2015 Audi e-tron quattro Concept Interior Sketch

This electric SUV has a cd value of 0.25. This in turn considerably contributes to the range of more than 500 kilometers (310 miles), which beats even Tesla Model S. The large lithium-ion battery is mounted between the axles and below the passenger compartment. This installation allows for low center of gravity, balanced axle load distribution, and better driving dynamics.

What was also understood from Audi is that the length of the e-tron quattro concept is positioned between the Q5 and Q7 models and it is based on the second-generation modular longitudinal platform.

At last, we should also say that the Audi R8 e-tron sports car served as an inspiration for this concept. In fact, the drive system in the SUV is the same as in the sports car. There are exactly three electric motors used in both vehicles: one on the front axle and two on the rear axle, and they are driving the concept.

Oh, and what is even better is that the sporty SUV with top aerodynamics and all-electric drive is scheduled for a series production in 2018.

  • Audi Unveils 2014 R18 e-tron quattro

2014-Audi-R18-e-tron-quattro-THUMBThe new 2014 WEC season began for Audi with spectacular appearance. The brand has just unveiled the updated Audi R18 e-tron quattro not only rolling on the Le Mans legendary race track, but also on public traffic. Tom Kristensen, who holds nine victories and who is a record holder of the Le Mans 24 Hours, drove the diesel hybrid sports car from the Saint-Julien du Mans cathedral in the city centre to the famous race track.

Audi’s newly livered LMP1 race car completed the ten kilometer distance through the city in a motorcade, did a lap on the Circuit Bugatti and eventually arrived in front of the race track’s center. The new colour scheme of the vehicle now has white, silver, red and black, and also features fresh and expressive graphics.

These colours are symbolic: silver emphasizes the past success in racing and is used as a base for the livery; white harmonises with the former color and stands for the hybrid drive, being utilized asymmetrically in order to highlight the complexity of the powertrain technology; black is used for the front and rear wings, as well as on sections of the fenders and sides with highly defined geometric contours, and this contrasting color stands for light-weight design; at last, red is Audi’s performance colour.

The graphics featured include Audi’s logos and inscriptions. They have longitudinal orientation and express the speed that is also emblematic for Le Mans. Red color is also included in the rims, and due to the wheel rotation, it also achieves a very dynamic effect.

2014 Audi R18 e-tron quattro is equipped with a V6 TDI power plant, which was increased from 3.7 to 4 litres, thus additionally optimizing the efficient engine. The energy flows through a motor generator unit (MGU) at the front axle and is stored in a flywheel energy storage system.

The new race car provides the optimum balance between efficiency, size, weight, energy conversion efficiency, responsiveness, drivability and durability. It is expected to participate in the official test of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Le Castellet in France on 28th and 29th of March.
