  • Durango Stays Bold While Others Shrink

2017 Dodge DurangoThe Dodge Durango seems to overshadow other SUVs and it’s not only because of its big and bold size and attitude. The Durango is one of those rare and powerful vehicles that is not afraid to stand alone away from the herd. Its good looks can only be matched by its friendly and luxurious interior that seats 7 comfortably and its power train that makes it the dominant SUVs on the planet.

The Dodge Durango that we test drove at Foss Motors had the big V8  in it, which impressed us so much we asked if we could drive around the block a couple more times. Thank goodness the Foss sales guy understood. He just smiled knowingly when we asked him, as if he gets that all the time and nodded his head. The second time around for us was unbelievable. We tried to be reserved and not be aggressive with the accelerator but, hey, what can you do when you’re in the beautiful 2017 Durango and you’re behind the wheel?

That was a rhetorical question, so no need to answer it. What we did, however, was to really feel the SUV out and take it through what we might experience if we owned it. We got on the highway and weaved (safely) through traffic, hardly noticing the bumpy road because of the great load-leveling suspension the Durango has. The ride couldn’t have been smoother and quieter and the 18-inch wheels along with cruise control and all the other standard amenities kept us confident throughout our whole test drive. The large infotainment touchscreen was also a nice surprise as it was so user-friendly and within the driver’s reach that we almost bought the car while we were driving it.

We also loved the all-wheel drive and the gas mileage, which was 18 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway. The eight-speed automatic transmission did all the work it was designed to do and never once reminded us that it was there. The whole experience was like that – low key, yet efficient and powerful. It was a pleasure to finally get behind the wheel of this legendary SUV and actually see the world from those comfortable seats. The Dodge Durango is a rare luxury in this busy world of ours. Come see for yourself and take a test drive.

  • Is there anything else we can expect from the Durango lineup?

2016 Dodge Durango ConceptHemi Durango in The Works?

FCA went into SEMA show in Las Vegas this past year hoping to show off some of their new concepts, designs, and had hoped that something might stick. Well one concept truly did stick with the audience and the internet when it was shown off, and that was the bright blue Durango concept, which they called the “Durango Shaker”.

Shortly after the revealing it was reported by major news outlets that the extremely positive reaction to the Shaker concept had stirred the parent company of Dodge, FCA to put major consideration into the development of this concept Durango.

While most other automakers are looking to go away from power, and more towards efficiency, Dodge has remained set on providing car buyers the power they feel they crave. We have seen this with the Viper models, the SRT models, as well as the remake of the Charger & Challenger vehicles. Aggressive styling, and pure power.

There have been rumors stirring about for quite some time that they would introduce a SRT version of the Durango, mostly because of how underperforming the Durango had done in recent years, when compared to the king of SUVs their sibling under the FCA umbrella, Jeep. So why not add something unique to it, give it something that is hard to resist.

We took the time to look at the inventory of Dodge Durango from a local Oklahoma dealer, Ada Dodge. What we saw wasn’t a SUV that was lacking power or design, it just needed a step up from itself. Something that made the Durango name live on, and that will surely be the Shaker concept.

  • Dodge Equips Durango R/T with more Nappa

2015 Dodge Durango R/T Front and Side ViewDodge Durango R/T just looks great. The seven-seater can now show-off with many new equipment features and specifically with those one can find in the interior. Its imposing stance is additionally strengthened by the standard for the 2015 model year 20-inch alloys in high-gloss Granite Crystalfinish. On the road the car will produce no less than 360 horsepower (265 kW), coming from the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine and the standard eight-speed automatic transmission. The torque is rated at 528 Nm (390 lb.-ft.), giving the opportunity of great tow rating measured at 7,400 pounds.

The new Durango R/T is also equipped with sport-tuned suspension and huge performance tires measuring 20-inch. The great exterior looks are due to the monochromatic appearance backed-up by the black headlamp bezels and LED daytime running lamps. In addition, the height of the car has been lowered by 20 mm.

However, the accent of this car is to be found inside. With the opening of the door we see abundance of Nappa Leather in Radar Red. Precisely, it is the seats that were wrapped in it. Of course, the red/black contrast stitching is a must. As a matter of fact, we have seen these seats in the Charger and Challenger, but it is very pleasant to the eyes when one can find them in other cars in Dodge’s range, too.

Other accents throughout the interior that should be mentioned are the Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen and the new audio releasing its sound via the nine speakers and subwoofer. Form the outside, one can also like the power liftgate function and the HID low-beam headlamps.

  • Dodge Durango Special Service

Dodge-Durango-Special-Service-thumbIf you are contemplating a local bank robbery, make sure the police force at your area still hasn’t received its batch of specially made Dodge Durangos. They will be designated by the term “Special Service” and, much like the Dodge Charger Pursuit, will serve the law enforcement or, by choice, the fire department or any other fleet out there. Either way, we are looking at a lean, mean machine, designed to rule over all sorts of terrains and offer as much versatility as possible.

A standard Dodge Durango comes with two engine choices: A 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 delivers 290 bhp and a range of 550 miles on a single tank. Then there’s the upper edge HEMI V8 with 360 bhp and the healthy 390 lb.-ft. of torque. The former has a towing capacity of 6200 lbs while the latter – 7400 lbs. And that load will cling on as standard equipment includes Trailer-sway Control.

The Special Service Durangos come with this very same engine choice with the possibility of being either RWD or AWD. But because the cargo area here is custom made to fit the needs of whomever might be using it, several performance components had to be beefed up – the breaks are new, there’s a heavy-duty battery now and a larger alternator. The water pump and engine oil cooler have also been replaced.

Standard Durangos already have 30 storage areas scattered around but the Special Service vehichles offer even more diversity – under-floor storage compartments and additional storage in the side compartments. Also, one might find service interior dome lamp and headliner and spot lamp wiring prep as additional extras. The otherwise commonly present third row of seats has been sacrificed, but it is all for the better good.

Since Servicepeople already put their lives at great risks, why not offer them some sense of security inside at the very least. That’s why these Durangos come with a full package of safety features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), electronic roll mitigation (ERM) and Hill-start Assist/ There are seat-mounted and side-curtain air bags in the front row. The side one reaches out for the second row as well, and the third, non-existent one.

Chrysler Group fleet operations will start taking orders now, with deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter of 2012 so fugitives for now will still have some room to breathe. However, just by looking at the gallery here, I already feel discouragement of indulging myself into a life of crime.
