Alfa-Romeo-Disco-Volante-by-Touring-THUMBThis year marks the 60th birthday of the legendary Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 ‘Disco Volante’. In order to celebrate this anniversary the prestigious Milanese coachbuilding firm Touring Superleggera created the 2013 edition of the Disco Volante.

The model presented here is a two-seater Gran Turismo with a entirely bespoke, hand-made carbon fibre and aluminium body. It is equipped with front-central mounted 4.7-litre V8 engine and transaxle rear drive. The Disco Volante reaches a top speed of 180mph and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.2 seconds.

Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring has a design that combines innovation, emotion and aerodynamic characteristics. Inside, the 2013 Disco Volante includes red LED interior light profiles, and also aeronautical-inspired touches which are featured on the dashboard, instruments and controls. Bespoke leather is used for the upholstery; the seats are wrapped with black Alcantara.

Touring Superleggera used as a basis the characteristics of Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. The chassis if the latter forms the basis for the coach-built bodywork of the vehicle. Alfa 8C’s steel space-frame, the frame members and the central carbon cell were also retained.

In addition, what also has been kept here are the engine bay and firewall, the windscreen and cowl, the A-pillar and the locks and hinges as well as the dashboard, instruments, pedals and steering wheel. Modification underwent the doorframes, roof frame and C-pillar in order to match the new shape of the car.

The engine included here, as mentioned, is the 4.7 litre V8 one, which generates 450 hp (330 kW) and 480 Nm (355 lb-ft) of peak torque. It is coupled with a six-speed, sequential transaxle gearbox with electronic control and paddle-shift gear selection. In combination with the limited-slip differential and braking system with large diameter, ventilated discs, they deliver excellent driving dynamics and exciting ride.

In order to guarantee the torsional stiffness and noise reduction of the car, a very special attention has been paid to the under-body structure, the tubular frames supporting the rear wings and bumper, and the roll bar joining the C-pillars.

Disco Volante has lightweight bodywork thanks to the use of a combination of aluminium and carbon fibre. The latter element is utilized for specific components such as the front bumper and grille, the bonnet, the side skirts, the boot lid and the integrated rear-window frame.

The bonnet and boot lid are sandwich-built with Nomex filler to obtain a superior stiffness/weight ratio and to dampen vibration and noise. On the other hand, aluminium panels are hand-made using an epoxy mould.

  • Disco Volante Returns To Geneva [TEASER]

Touring-Superleggera-Disco-Volante-THUMBTouring Superleggera Disco Volante debuted last year at the Geneva Motor Show. Now a year later, the brand will showcase at the same show the first rolling unit of the Disco Volante Touring.

It will be a two seater grand tourer built on demand, and to be more precise it utilizes the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione frame, driveline and technology. In order to complete the whole engineering, development and manufacturing process, it took the team only ten months.

Many parts of the new body are made from carbon fibre, which not only adds aesthetics to the car, but also – structural value to the traditional hand-beaten aluminium panels. In fact, the touring Superleggera is one of the rare companies that offer the whole in-house productive cycle.

We aren’t one hundred percent sure, but it is rumored that the model will include a 4.7 liter V8 engine which generates 450 hp (331 kW) and has 470Nm (347 lb-ft) of torque. The unit will be probably mated to an electronically controlled six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle-shifters on the steering wheel.

More details around Disco Volante will be announced at the Show, where the official reveal of the car will take place.

  • 2012 Geneva Motor Show: Disco Volante Concept

Touring Superleggera has announced the staggering Disco Volante Concept at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It is inspired by an old Alfa Romeo and features two seats and powerful V8 engine at the front.

The Disco Volante shares a lot of details from 8C Competizione like the engine, suspension and some other elements.

The mighty 4.7 liter V8 delivers 450PS (331 kW) and 470Nm (347 lb-ft) of torque. It is mated to an electronically controlled 6-speed sequential gearbox with paddle-shifters on the steering wheel. All that power is sent to the rear wheels through a LSD (limited slip differential) ensuring perfect traction at every conditions and even in sport driving. 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 292 km/h (181 mph).

We just can’t imagine what will be the price of this car, because every one of these needs more than 4000 hours of highly skilled artisan and engineer work to be completed. Furhtermore, it needs an entire Alfa Romeo Competizione 8C for donor parts.

Stay tuned for more information about this interesting sports vehicle and check out the full specs, below!

  • Carrozzeria Touring Disco Volante 2012 at Geneva

Touring-Superleggera-Disco-Volante-thumbThat gorgeous looking thing, adorning the halls of the Geneva Motor Show hides an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione engine inside. It even has an 8C chassis. And despite that it has all the necessary looks to be an Alfa, it isn’t. Say hello to the Carrozzeria Touring Disco Volante 2012 – a tribute to the 1900 C52 Alfa Romeo concept from the fifties. It too was made with the help of the same company and now it’s back in a different form. Carrozzeria Touring was (and still is) all about lightness and agility – “supperleggera”. The C52 had a spectacular tubular chassis, an aluminum crankcase and bits and pieces from the Alfa 1900 C. It was a car that set a new benchmark in aerodynamics. It was a pretty car, a flying saucer.

The 2012 Disco Volante bares all that DNA. A whole-piece hood veils the wheel wells. It still has the overall slippery teardrop shape and a silver waistline that would make any maxi model green with envy. You get the sense that it has been thoroughly contemplated and discussed on paper before being commissioned. Creating  one of these 2012 saucers requires 4000 hours of labor. The aluminum panels on it are hand-beaten as a part of a company tradition. Many details and components are also hand-built making the car extremely exclusive. Just a few will be made and given to those who need it most – collectors, sporting drivers and design aficionados.

Of course, underneath it is essentially an Alfa 8C which means that the double wishbone suspension keeps the Disco Volante (the flying saucer) fairly planted on the road. It also means that when you peal away that monoblock hood you’ll see a 4.7 V8 that sends 450 PS and 470 Nm of torque through a 6-speed paddle shift gearbox and a limited slip differential. Luckily the brakes are also from the current century and do a pretty good job stopping the perfectly weight distributed Disco Volante 2012.

Let’s just hope you are ready to empty your pockets superleggera style if you want it. The Alfa 8C is expensive enough. Adding a fur coat on the bill, won’t come lightly. But what a car it is!
