  • Class-leading features from new Boxer Diesel Forester

Subaru Boxer Diesel Forester 2.0D XThe new Boxer Diesel Forester – itself only launched in April in petrol format – the boxer diesel catapults it to the top of the class for fuel economy and low emissions. It also offers drivers the longest range of any SUV at more than 1,000 km before refuelling.

No other competitor can match the new Forester 2.0D X’s Combined 44.8 mpg nor its ultra-low 167 g/km meaning an annual Road Fund Licence of £170.

In addition, only the VW Tiguan can match the Group 9E insurance rating for the Forester 2.0D X and XC models. The Honda CR-V, for example is Group 12, Nissan X-Trail from Group 13 and Toyota RAV4 is classed from Group11 upwards.

Meanwhile, the Boxer Diesel Forester’s 115.5 mph top speed and 10 second 0-60 mph time makes it one of the swiftest of SUVs while the extra engine torque over the petrol model allows a full 2,000 kg braked towing limit.

Apart from the much-applauded new engine, key improvements over the 2.0 litre petrol Forester include a new six-speed manual gearbox, uprated front suspension and firmer-feeling steering.

On sale this September, the new Boxer Diesel Forester range comprises three models with their own specific trim levels – the 2.0D X at £20,295, 2.0D XC at £22,495 and 2.0D XSn at £25,495 (all on-the-road).

Commenting on the new Boxer Diesel Forester, Lawrence Good, Managing Director, Subaru (UK) Limited said: “This is the car everyone has been waiting for and places us right in the SUV heartland where it leads in so many crucial areas.

“With the praise already heaped on the new Boxer Diesel as fitted to the Legacy and the favourable comments on the new Forester’s improved space, ride and handling, this should be the perfect combination for both loyal Subaru owners and conquest customers.”

SUV In Size But Subaru-Like To Drive
Even more the keen driver’s choice, the new Forester launched this April is Subaru’s third generation of crossover SUVs but now occupies a similar silhouette to the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail or Honda CR-V.

Based on the platform of the new Impreza, the Forester features a new multi-link rear suspension, fuel-saving electric power steering and Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control.

Now closer in size to its less agile SUV competitors, the completely new Forester is 75 mm longer, 45 mm wider and gains 110 mm in height (all models except the 2.0D X which lacks roof rails).

Rear legroom grows by 95 mm, the driver’s eye-line is 30 mm higher, while the load space is now 450 litres with the rear seat up – 63 litres more than the previous model.

But while the ground clearance is now 10 mm greater at 215 mm, the engine itself sits 10 mm lower. This, coupled with the inherent low centre-of-gravity of the boxer engine, gives exceptionally agile handling.

    Equipment And Design
The new Boxer Diesel Forester offers outstanding equipment with even the entry-level Forester 2.0D X featuring: symmetrical all-wheel drive; Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control; self-levelling rear suspension; fuel-saving electric power steering; front, side and curtain airbags and 16 x 6.5 ins alloy wheels with 215/65 tyres.

Other features include four electric windows; 60/40-split rear seats with reclining back-rests; climate-control air-conditioning; radio/CD player; front fog lamps; vehicle information display; height and reach-adjustment steering wheel; leather-covered steering wheel, handbrake and gear-lever; heated front seats, mirrors and windscreen wipers plus cruise-control.

Expected to be the best-seller, the Forester 2.0D XC adds: roof-rails; larger, 17x 7.0 ins alloy wheels with 225/55 tyres; premium audio system featuring a six-stacker CD-player and seven speakers; roof spoiler; HID headlamps and a large, electrically-powered sun-roof.

Finally, the top-of-the range Forester 2.0D XSn adds: satellite navigation with single disc CD/radio; leather seats; electrically-powered driver’s seat and Smart-entry with push-button start.

Other premium touches shared by all Foresters include a gas strut-assisted bonnet, flowing fascia design, double-stitched seat cloth, metallic interior decoration and padded armrest cushions.

The instruments are also sporty thanks to their clear design and subtle lighting while the extensive vehicle information display includes a fuel consumption indicator highlighting the new Forester’s much improved efficiency.

Now, much more SUV-like in appearance, the new Forester boasts a clean, chiselled appearance with multi-grooved wheel-arches, hawk-eye headlamps and aggressive bumpers. Thought has even been given to the chunky exterior door handles which have deep recesses to allow winter glove-wearers an easier grip.

    Boxer Diesel Secrets Explained

    • Exceptionally compact, light and strong
    • Low friction ‘Boxer’ balance cancels out vibration
    • Flat four’s low centre-of-gravity boosts handling agility
    • Punchy throttle response
    • Common-rail fuel-injection for greater efficiency
    • Solenoid injectors for compactness
    • Variable-vane turbocharger mounted under engine for low centre-of-gravity
    • Highly efficient, fast-warm catalytic converter also mounted under engine

Dedicated to the horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ engine layout for over 40 years, Subaru engineers were determined to use this format for their first diesel engine.

The reasons were to create a light, compact, strong unit with reduced vibration, noise and internal friction compared to an in-line engine and for an ultra-low centre-of gravity.

This enhances handling agility and roadholding – especially when combined with Subaru’s renowned symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

The entire engine and transmission are not only mounted very low down but also within the wheelbase which further boosts chassis dynamics.

And with a minimum 45 kg weight increase over the 2.0 litre petrol engine, the boxer diesel actually lowers the centre-of-gravity.

    Cancelled Out Vibration
The 2.0 litre Boxer Diesel has a class-leading light weight with the horizontally-opposed pistons effectively cancelling out the secondary harmonic vibration (vibration with twice the frequencies of the engine speed).

The crankshaft is short and highly rigid, minimising the vibrational noise of many diesel engines.

And the superior balance of the horizontally-opposed engine means internal rotational inertia and friction are drastically reduced compared with an in-line engine.

Reduced internal friction means throttle response is exceptionally lively and in keeping with Subaru’s sporty heritage.

Compared to Subaru’s 2.0 litre petrol engine fitted to the Impreza, Legacy and Forester, the 2.0 litre Boxer Diesel has a 11 mm longer stroke and 6 mm smaller bore for a capacity of 1,998 cc versus 1,994 cc.

    Even More Compact
Thanks to a bore pitch shortened from 113 mm to 98.4 mm, the overall engine block length is only 353.5 mm compared to the petrol’s already compact 414.8 mm.

The block is of a rigid semi-closed deck design, while all five main bearings in the alloy cylinder block use metal composite supports for added strength and durability. It also enhances refinement, providing a similar thermal expansion to that of the crankshaft.

Extra water-cooling slits have been added between the cylinder bores and the high-strength pistons are squirted with oil to enhance cooling. The large big ends of the connecting rods feature an asymmetrical profile for assembly precision and reduced friction.

The high-strength crankshaft has a special surface treatment to withstand the diesel engine’s high combustion pressures while the uprated cylinder heads have roller rocker arms. In addition, the cam-drive is via a chain system that better handles the variations in torque of a diesel engine.

    Advanced Fuel-Injection And Turbocharger
The new Boxer Diesel uses an advanced common-rail fuel-injection system with the fuel being pressurised at 180 MPa before being fed into the common rail. This maximises efficiency, both in terms of power, fuel consumption and emissions.

Special, short-length solenoid injectors ensure the engine’s width is no greater than that of the 2.0 litre ‘boxer’ petrol unit, despite the diesel’s longer piston stroke.

The variable nozzle turbocharger ensures the correct boost throughout the engine’s rev-range and its low centre-of gravity position under the engine and close to the catalytic converters increases environmental performance.

The Boxer Diesel meets Euro4 emission standards thanks to oxidation catalytic converters and a particulate filter.

A new feature for the Forester is a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). This reduces PM (Particulate Matter) – the cause of black smoke – to the minimum.

Class-Challenging Performance. Class-Leading Economy And Emissions
The new Boxer Diesel provides class-challenging performance thanks to its 147 PS at an ultra-low 3,600 rpm and a massive 258 lb ft torque at an accessible 1,800 rpm.

With a ‘square’ bore and stroke of 86 mm and 16.3:1 compression ratio, the world’s first Boxer Diesel provides effortless performance throughout a wide speed range, avoiding the breathless response of some diesels at high revs.

Top speed and the 0-60 mph times are among the best in the compact SUV class at 115.5 mph and 10 seconds while – even more importantly – in-gear flexibility leaves most competitors trailing thanks to strong mid-range torque and the carefully-chosen ratios of the new six-speed manual gearbox.

Fuel economy in the Forester 2.0D X is class-leading at 39.2/48.7 and 44.8 mpg while the Forester 2.0D XC and XSn are not far behind at 38.2/47.9 and 44.1 mpg. Their CO2 emission figures are equally impressive at 167 and 170 g/km respectively.

And to best exploit this new-found frugality, the Boxer Diesel Forester’s fuel tank is enlarged from 60 to 64 litres compared to the petrol models, giving it the longest range in its class before requiring refuelling at 1,000 km-plus.

(Note: The new Boxer Diesel Forester has 3 PS less than the Legacy/Outback because of reduced cooling air travelling through the bonnet air intake.)

    New Six-Speed Manual Gearbox
The new Boxer Diesel Forester boasts a new six-speed manual gearbox with optimised ratios for quiet, refined high-speed cruising and flexible low-speed manoeuvres.

For example, 6th is slightly higher than 5th on the Legacy and Outback Boxer Diesels at 31.5 mph/1,000 rpm for the Forester 2.0D X while 1st is lower at 5.1 mph/1,000 rpm.

This new six-speed gearbox employs a cable change – a system becoming increasingly popular. Apart from giving a consistent feel, cables isolate transmission and engine vibration, enhancing refinement.

    Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive Uprated
As with previous models, the Forester enjoys Subaru’s acclaimed full-time all-wheel drive transmission.

In addition, all new Foresters benefit from Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control as standard.

This advanced system uses sophisticated sensors to detect side-to-side and front-to- rear slip plus sudden steering movements. It controls oversteer/understeer and potential loss of control by braking individual wheels and cutting engine revs – all in milliseconds.

The Forester’s quick-thinking full-time AWD system splits power 50/50 front to rear. However, as soon as slip is detected, the centre differential with its viscous-coupling distributes torque to the axle with the most grip. This happens in milliseconds.

    Passenger And Pedestrian Safety Boost
Both occupants and pedestrians are well protected by the new Forester thanks to a whole series of safety measures aimed at achieving the highest standards of both occupant and pedestrian safety.

Curtain and side airbags are now fitted to all models together with driver and passenger airbags. The front seatbelts have pre-tensioners, anti-whiplash front head restraints are standard and the front seats have energy-absorbing backs.

The brake pedal is energy-absorbing, being designed to snap away under severe impact, protecting the driver’s lower limbs. In the rear seat are two ISOFIX-compatible child seat mountings.

The passenger airbag is dual-stage which provides progressive protection matched to the severity of the impact and the standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) come with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). This juggles the braking force between front and rear wheels according to load shifts during deceleration. Unlike the previous model, the new Forester has front ventilated disc brakes and solid rear discs.

High tensile steel of varying thickness is used extensively throughout the body, providing good crushability where needed while protecting the passenger area.

Not only does the elimination of the previous Forester’s front subframe reduce body weight by 20 kg but the new structure better dissipates front impact forces.

Much careful thought has been given to enhance pedestrian protection. Because the Forester is higher than a car, more space has been made between the bonnet and catch, while the bonnet itself has been designed to spread impact load over its entire surface.

The rear of the bonnet compresses easily and the cowl ahead of the windscreen is designed to dissipate collision energy.

A new shock-absorbing plate has been installed ahead of the front bumper beam to reduce pedestrian leg injuries. This new design meets European pedestrian safety regulations while retaining the off-road approach angle expected of an SUV.

    Outstanding Ride Plus Driver-Focussed Handling
A sophisticated all-wheel drive system coupled with low-friction, long travel four-wheel independent suspension and low-centre of gravity ‘boxer’ engines have all contributed to the Forester’s reputation for outstanding chassis dynamics – far removed from conventional SUVs.

Now for the new model, Subaru has devised a completely new platform with a 90 mm longer wheelbase, tracks widened by 35 mm front and 45 mm rear and a sophisticated multi-link, double wishbone rear suspension.

In addition, to further improve handling and roadholding, the position of the ‘boxer’ engine has been dropped by 10 mm, lowering the centre of gravity still further.

Other changes include a new fuel-saving electric power steering system with more rigid mounting and new design of MacPherson strut front suspension.

The result is a highly-absorbent ride with precise geometry control for accurate straight-line running over uneven road surfaces backed by extremely responsive steering and handling.

The rear multi-link, double wishbone suspension liberates more luggage space thanks to its compactness compared to the previous rear strut arrangement.

And because it is attached to a sub frame via bushes, with the mounting section moved to under the floor itself, road noise is reduced.

The rear springs and shock-absorbers are mounted behind the centre-line of the rear wheels, with the wheel stroke itself moving rearwards – all helping ride comfort. A rear anti-roll bar is standard.

Like all previous Foresters, the rear suspension features self-levelling which aids stability when laden and ensures a constant ground clearance – now a substantial 215 mm – 10 mm greater than before.

At the front, the previous sub frame has been eliminated, saving 20 kg in body weight yet a new box-section for the front cross-member provides the same level of rigidity.

The new MacPherson strut and anti-roll bar layout is based on that used by the highly-praised Legacy and new Impreza. It offers high lateral rigidity which improves steering response and cornering stability.

This is further enhanced by an especially rigid mounting for the steering rack and the positioning of the steering gearbox and electric motor below the rack for a more consistent feel. Furthermore, special suspension bushes and attachment points reduce road shock.

The steering gear ratio has been changed for a sportier feel while the rack diameter is increased from 23 to 26 mm. The result is a more linear feel to steering inputs.

And for the new Boxer Diesel Forester the front damping has been firmed up together with the steering to sharpen handling and compensate for the 45 kg increase in engine weight.

Wheel and tyre sizes have been optimised for the new Forester’s chassis and anticipated all-terrain use.

    The Forester 2.0D X features 16 x 6.5 ins alloy wheels with 215/65 R 16 tyres while the Forester 2.0D XC and XSn have 17 x 7.0 ins alloy wheels with 225/55 R 17 tyres.

  • The New Honda Jazz

2008 Honda JazzHonda’s Jazz builds on the key attributes of its hugely popular predecessor with even more interior space, better functionality and more powerful, more frugal engines, in a stylish, contemporary design.

The exterior design is at first glance an evolution rather than a revolution, but this subtle change of appearance is only one small part of the thousands of changes that push the Jazz forward. It retains the concepts of the previous Jazz with its centre fuel tank layout and Magic Seats which gave it world beating interior flexibility. Yet while the best features are retained, including cabin space to rival mid-sized saloons, Jazz brings change to every area, raising the bar even further and promising to expand on its success in the supermini segment where sales have exceeded over two million around the world since its 2001 launch.

A slightly larger, ‘cab forward’ style body brings better visibility and means Jazz is even more spacious, benefiting rear legroom and boot space in particular. The Magic Seats now dive down in one easy action and their versatility is now complemented by a Double-Trunk boot feature in the luggage bay.

There are greater levels of safety equipment including the introduction of Honda‘s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, active front seat head restraints and VSA. Larger wheels, revised suspension and a longer wheelbase/wider track bring greater agility while enhancing ride comfort.

And 90 PS 1.2-litre and 100 PS 1.4-litre i-VTEC engines deliver better performance characteristics while boosting economy to exceptional levels. There’s also now the option of a 6-speed automated manual transmission on the 1.4-litre engine – a first in this class.

Greater economy and lower emission from two engines

More powerful petrol engines, capable of outstanding economy, are designed to appeal to customers who might be downsizing as well as those looking to achieve fuel economy comparable to diesel powered models. Their balance between economy and fun-to-drive performance are unmatched in the class. Adopting Honda’s VTEC variable valve timing technology, the 1.2 and 1.4-litre four-cylinder engines are connected to either a 5-speed manual transmission or, on 1.4 models, Honda’s i-SHIFT 6-speed automated manual transmission which includes steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Both engines deliver lively performance and plentiful torque across all engine speeds.

SIL (Shift Indicator Light) fitted to manual models, similar to that found on the Accord, provides a visual prompt of the best gear shift points to maximise economy.

Cab forward styling and increased dimensions

At 3900 mm long, 1695 mm wide and 1525 mm tall, the Jazz occupies its own unique niche between superminis and compact MPVs, offering the style of the former and the practicality of the latter.
Overall height remains the same, but the length of the Jazz is up by 55 mm and it is also slightly wider – by 20 mm. A wheelbase increase of 50 mm, and front and rear track increases of 35 mm and 30 mm, respectively, aid handling stability.

Despite those increased dimensions, the turning circle at 9.8 m kerb to kerb is no larger than that of the previous Jazz and together with improved visibility, the car’s around town abilities are even better.
Furthermore, Jazz is even easier to get in and out of, thanks to wider-opening rear doors which now open in three steps like their front counterparts for added convenience in tight parking spots.
The key styling theme of the Jazz is its ‘cab forward’ look with a windscreen ‘pushed’ forwards to give a virtually seamless curve flowing from front to rear bumpers. There’s a reassuring face with large headlamps that curve along the car’s flanks, an upward curving front bumper and a sporty honeycomb grille.

The wide track, long wheelbase chassis imparts a strong sense of solidity, emphasised by muscular wheelarches and larger wheels on all models – 15 inch steel items on 1.2 models and 1.4 LS, 15 inch 5-spoke alloys on 1.4 ES and 16 inch twin 5-spoke alloys on 1.4 EX.

Rear styling is equally distinctive with a narrowing of the upper body towards the rear and a rear roof line that slopes downwards without compromising rear passenger headroom. A black, high gloss trim above the licence plate ‘extends’ the window line downwards to give a unique rear appearance.

Jazz 1.4 LS is also offered with a Sport Pack which includes a larger front grille, additional side sill panels, rear bumper diffuser and 16 inch alloy wheels.

    ACE body structure

Even more efficient safety performance results from the introduction of the ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, a concept that is being progressively rolled out across the Honda range. is composed of highly efficient energy-absorbing polygonal cross-section side frames, a bulkhead (upper frame) which absorbs the upper part of the collision energy, and a lower member. This helps prevent misalignment between vehicles of different sizes and construction. It also provides multiple energy absorbing pathways to disperse impact energy and prevent cabin deformation.

Standard on all models are dual front and side airbags, full length side curtain airbags and three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions, those in the front with load-limiting pretensioners. The front passenger airbag can also be deactivated to allow a rear facing child seat to be fitted to the front seat and for the first time Jazz is equipped with seatbelt reminders for both the front and rear seats. Front seats are also fitted with active headrests to minimise the potential for whiplash injuries.

Jazz, like all Honda models has been subject to the manufacturer’s rigorous car-to-car crash testing in the R&D centre at Tochigi. These crash tests which are conducted to enhance real world crash safety are done using a number of different models with different sizes and weights. By using a range of vehicles, Honda is able to ensure the Jazz is optimised to minimise injuries to occupants of both vehicles in an impact.
Two ISOFIX fittings in the left and right rear seats together with tether anchors in the roof ensure correct child seat installation.

Larger, more refined cabin with even better functionality

The ingenious interior layout of the previous Jazz, with its compact suspension and centrally-mounted fuel tank liberating more load space, together with the increased external dimensions of the model, mean interior comfort has been taken to a level.

The slightly increased length and width have clearly benefited passenger space, but a windscreen ‘pushed’ further forward has also paid dividends making the Jazz the roomiest, most flexible contender in the class.
Rear seat passengers now have 18 mm greater kneeroom, while the distance between front and rear passengers is up by 30 mm. The slightly wider body also means shoulder room increases by 44 mm in the front and 43 mm in the rear.
Visibility gets a considerable boost, too. Reduced width A-pillars, a larger windscreen and quarter windows three times the size of those in the previous model make for more relaxed driving, while retractable rear headrests ensure the view out of the rear window is now totally unobscured.

    Magic Seats now one-motion dive-down

Given the popularity of the previous Jazz’s innovative ‘cinema’ style rear seats, it comes as little surprise that Honda chose to offer a similar arrangement in the car; but while the latest Magic Seats operate on the same principle, they are even more convenient since they have a one-motion, dive-down operation. No longer is there a need to move the front seats forward to collapse the rear seats. Instead, thanks to headrests that are virtually flush with the seatback, the 60:40 split rear seats are able to clear the front seats even when the latter are slid back to their rearmost position.

The resulting flat floor in this Utility Mode measures 1720 mm in length, enough to accommodate three 26 inch mountain bikes with their front wheels in place. Load length in Long Mode is even greater – slide the front passenger seat fully forward, recline the seat back and you have 2.4 m long load space.

When lifting the rear seats up again, the seat bases stay locked to the seat backs, in which position they can be left – Tall Mode – to create a useful secondary load area between front and rear seats and able to swallow items up to 1280 mm tall – and now even easier to access given that the rear doors open wider. There’s even a storage compartment in the base of the left hand rear seat, able to accommodate, amongst other things, the owner’s manual.

Double-Trunk boot feature (1.4-litre models with tyre repair kit)

The outstanding practicality of the Magic Seats concept is complemented in the Jazz by a flexible luggage area based on similar principles to the arrangement found in the Honda CR-V. Standard on 1.4 models, which are equipped with a tyre repair kit, the Double-Trunk boot features an underfloor storage area concealed by a double hinged panel – Regular Mode. The 230 mm deep, 64 litre capacity lower compartment is ideal for stashing sports gear or wet items, and once covered, won’t soil other luggage.

\The floor can be removed altogether or folded up against the rear seats to make full use of the total depth available – ideal for particularly tall objects (Tall Mode). Alternatively, rather than folding the complete panel against the seat backs, its rear half can be folded up to create a load shelf at half height – so creating a double load space – Upper/lower Mode. Heavier items can be stored below, while lighter items can be placed on the upper shelf, and since it incorporates a load net, is perfect for carrying awkwardly shaped items, preventing them from moving around.

Total luggage space available is 399 litres (VDA) in models with a tyre repair kit, greater than that of some compact MPVs and class-leading in the supermini sector. The previous Jazz had a total of 380 litres (VDA).

    Refined cabin environment

High quality, pleasant-to-the touch materials, stylish design and tasteful colours give the cabin a more upmarket feel.
More comfortable front seats with better support, a driver’s footrest, a height adjustable driver’s seat, a steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake and larger rear seats are just some of the features that contribute to the more cosseting, more relaxed cabin environment. Extra sound insulation and the increased body rigidity also play their part in making the Jazz a pleasant place to be. And for a real sense of spaciousness, the Jazz 1.4 EX is equipped with a panorama roof that extends over the rear seats for a great aerial view. Heat absorbing glass and a power sun shade ensure a comfortable cabin environment all year round.

1.4 ES and EX models add heated front seats and a leather trimmed steering wheel and gear shift knob, while the EX also has front and rear seat armrests and the added convenience of cruise control and automatic lights and wipers.
Exterior mirrors are heated on 1.2 LS and above, and power retractable on 1.4 LS and above.

The three-meter instrument cluster is permanently back-lit to ensure good legibility at all times and features silver surrounds, gun metallic-finish dials and a raised red acrylic scale. All models feature soft-touch indicators that deliver three indicator flashes for effortless motorway lane changing.

A useful multi-information display set within the centre of the speedometer provides a wide range of information including a speed alarm, instant and average fuel economy, vehicle range, outside temperature and a service indicator – controlled by steering wheel buttons.

    iPod compatible

Stylishly integrated into the fascia, the single CD/radio fitted to all models from 1.2 LS upwards offers MP3/WMA playback capability and speed-dependent volume adjustment. The four speakers are supplemented on 1.4 ES and EX models with a pair of tweeters together with a USB adapter located in the centre console storage box; this enables fifth generation iPods and a variety of other portable music devices to be played via the Jazz’s audio system while providing simultaneous charging (depending on type).

The Jazz 1.4 EX also comes with a Bluetooth wireless mobile phone interface allowing hands-free operation via a steering wheel mounted switch.

Lots of handy storage spaces are scattered throughout the cabin and there are no less than 10 cup/bottle holders – two at the front of the centre console, two behind the handbrake, one at each end of the fascia, and one in each of the four door panels. Other storage includes upper and lower gloveboxes, a pocket to the right of the steering wheel, a flexible compartment in the centre console and, on most models, a passenger seatback pocket.

Air conditioning is standard on 1.2 LS and above, with automatic operation on 1.4 models and the system is more efficient and with added cooling ability. 1.4 ES and EX models feature a valve contained in the upper glove compartment which can be opened to provide a stream of cool air, so enabling a drinks can or bottle to be chilled.

Honda i-SHIFT (6-speed automated manual transmission)

Honda’s i-SHIFT 6-speed automated manual transmission first introduced in the Civic range, is available as an option on 1.4-litre models. Offering better economy than either a conventional automatic or a CVT, it gives the driver a choice of either Auto Mode for a more relaxed driving style, or Manual Mode for a sportier driving experience, using the gear lever or steering wheel mounted paddles.

The switch between Manual and Automatic Modes is selected by moving the gearshift to the left of the main gate, while sequential changes in Manual Mode are made by moving the lever forwards (to change up) or backwards (to change down) in the main gate.

Only short movements are required, adding to the sporty driving feel, and the clutch actuator provides particularly smooth and quick changes.
When in Automatic Mode, it is perfectly possible to revert to Manual momentarily by switching to paddle operation. In this way, the driver can change down a couple of gears for added acceleration.
i-SHIFT models are also equipped with Hill Start Assist (HSA) which momentarily holds the brakes when pulling away from standstill on an incline, thus preventing roll back.

    Responsive driving dynamics, enhanced comfort

Larger wheels – 15 inch or 16 inch depending on grade – hint at enhancements to the Jazz’s suspension and steering which are intended to provide greater agility while building on ride comfort.
Body rigidity is considerably enhanced, in particular lateral rigidity at the front of the car which has permitted sharper handling while allowing more supple suspension characteristics. Overall stability and grip benefit from the longer wheelbase, wider track and larger wheels, but there have also been a number of changes to the geometry and structure of the front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension. These include revised bushes, caster angle and trail at the front and a different torsion beam cross section and longer trailing arms at the rear. Improved rear steer characteristics further improve stability.

Improved feedback and stability characterise the substantially revised electric power steering which builds on the sense of driving enjoyment achieved by improvements in other areas of the chassis. Strengthened components, increased capacity and the geometry changes mentioned above produce a lighter steering feel at low speeds, good stability at high speeds and improved on centre feel.

All models can be equipped with Honda’s Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) which maintains control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres using brake intervention and engine torque management.
Stopping ability has been increased with larger brake front callipers, while revised brake pedal characteristics have improved feel. Front ventilated discs and rear discs are matched with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist.

    Worldwide success

Since its launch in Japan in 2001, Jazz has gone on to become Honda’s most successful small car. Its clever packaging, value for money and strong residuals have proved a winning formula, helping to retain customers year after year. It has gone on to become a global car sold in 115 countries with annual sales of around 400,000 and total sales to date worldwide exceeding two million units. Jazz is now produced in six factories in five countries.
Jazz is already on sale in Japan – where it is known as Fit – and was awarded the 2007-2008 Japan Car of the Year Award – emulating the very first Honda Fit in 2001. The Fit is also available in the North American market where it has proved a huge success since its introduction 2 years ago. The Fit will go on sale in November.

In Europe Honda is planning to expand sales from approximately 80,000 to over 100,000 cars a year. The previous generation Jazz has predominantly appealed to ‘post family’ customers – older couples without children or whose kids have left home and for many their only car – and the additional enhancements of the model will continue to meet, and indeed exceed, those customers’ expectations to ensure good repeat business.

Honda also believes the model has the potential to appeal to mature families – typically parents aged 40-50 with a double income, often with two cars, and who are willing to pay more for premium and distinctive features. An easy driving style and low running costs are a must, and the versatility of the Jazz should appeal when ferrying children, on shopping trips and in general city driving. Younger families, daily commuters, as well as user chooser company car drivers looking to minimise their taxation levels are secondary targets.

Above all, Jazz should appeal for its unique ability to provide the style of B-segment hatchbacks matched to the versatility of B-segment MPVs.
Honda Jazz will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October before sales commence before the end of the year.

    A wide choice of accessories

Jazz offers an extensive accessory range to enable customers to tailor their car exactly to their requirements.

    BODY AND SAFETY

    • Cab forward styling
    • Longer, wider body
    • Increased wheelbase and track
    • Advanced Compatibility Engineering body further improves impact characteristics
    • Enhanced body rigidity
    • Six airbags, active front seat headrests, two ISOFIX fixtures, five 3-point seatbelts, front with pretensioners
    • Eleven Exterior Colours with five Tones

Much of Jazz’s success has undoubtedly stemmed from its clever packaging, and these innovative elements are retained in the model. However, while the styling has moved in an evolutionary rather than revolutionary direction, Jazz is even more spacious inside, maximising comfort and cargo space, to give ‘inside out flexibility’.

The innovative centre tank layout – in which the fuel tank is located beneath the front seats in its own protective perimeter frame – is carried over for its ability to confer cabin space and practicality, but both wheelbase and overall length are increased – by 50 mm and 55 mm, respectively, while body width is up 20 mm.

A simultaneous 35 mm increase in the front track and 30 mm increase at the rear, together with the longer wheelbase, contributes to greater handling stability but also helps to optimise the steering angle for a tight kerb-to-kerb turning circle of 9.8 m (10.4 m wall-to-wall) – identical to the previous Jazz – so retaining small car manoeuvrability and great in-town driving performance.

Jazz is now even easier to climb into and out of thanks to rear doors that open wider – to a maximum 80 degrees – and like the front doors, now in three steps for added convenience in tight parking situations.
There are now 11 body colours offered, five of which are: vibrant Deep Sapphire Blue and Premium Deep Violet pearlescents and Cerulean Blue, Sherbert Blue and Cool Rose metallics. They join Taffeta White and Milano Red; Alabaster Silver and Storm Silver metallics; and Crystal Black and Helios Yellow pearlescents.

    Jazz’s unique position

At 3900 mm long, 1695 mm wide and 1525 mm tall, the Jazz occupies its own unique niche between B-segment superminis and B-segment compact MPVs, offering the style of the former and the practicality of the latter.
The exterior styling is intended to express both spaciousness and dynamic motion and a key element is the ‘cab forward’ look with slim front pillars and windscreen pushed further forward to create a single flowing curve from the front to rear bumpers.

Clearly defined and reassuring, the face of the Jazz features large headlamps curving along the flanks of the front wings, a raised centre section to the bonnet, and a sporty honeycomb grille that adopts Honda’s hexagonal motif. The bumper sweeps up on either side to follow the line of the headlamps, and the trapezoidal lower grille adds to the sense of stability of the design.

Jazz imparts a sense of stability thanks to the wider track and relatively long wheelbase and emphasised by prominent, muscular rear wings. The body sides are characterised by a rising shoulder line and a distinctive feature line that extends forwards from the rear wheel arches. 1.4-litre models feature indicators incorporated into the exterior mirrors.

Excellent aerodynamic efficiency is helped by an upper body that narrows towards the rear and a rear roof section which slopes downwards without compromising rear seat headroom.
On the tailgate, a high gloss trim above the licence plate recess ‘extends’ the window line downwards to create a unique rear graphic. LED tail lights and third brake light add a premium touch and greater efficiency.
The fuel filler is now concealed by a ‘push’ type flap making it easier to open.

    Sport Pack

The Jazz 1.4 LS can be specified with an optional Sport Pack consisting of a number of unique body styling elements. A larger front grille complemented by a main grille finished in gunmetal mesh with a satin finished outer moulding distinguishes the unique front bumper, while front foglamps are further inset than those on other models. Additional side sill panels emphasise the car’s wider stance, while the rear bumper has a diffuser element in its lower edge and a wider tailpipe completes the unique rear end. Finally, 16 inch alloy wheels provide a finishing touch to the more aggressive appearance.

    Comprehensive safety package

Developed in the vehicle-to-vehicle crash testing facility at Honda’s Tochigi R&D base, the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure is now a well-established weapon in Honda’s safety armoury. Jazz is the latest range to benefit from this highly effective technology which provides a protective cocoon for occupants in a variety of real-world crash conditions. These may include a frontal collision between vehicles of differing heights, weights and frame construction.

A conventional body structure generally concentrates the loads from the impact through two pathways running longitudinally through the lower portion of the frame. The Advanced Compatibility EngineeringTM (ACETM) body structure of the Jazz, is composed of highly efficient energy-absorbing polygonal cross-section side frames, a bulkhead (upper frame) which absorbs the upper part of the collision energy, and a lower member that helps prevent misalignment of the frames of the vehicles involved. This prevents cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple major load bearing pathways – and away from the passenger compartment. At the same time, the structure reduces the chance of vertical or lateral misalignment between the Jazz and another vehicle’s safety structures.

Impact energy is directed into the immensely strong floor structure formed by the cross members and longitudinal members protecting the central fuel tank on all four sides. This structure provides exceptional stiffness which also benefits side impact performance to maintain cabin integrity.

Jazz also incorporates many of the pedestrian-protection design features already familiar from recent Honda models. Research shows that features such as these dramatically improve a pedestrian’s chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle. Features include windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges, as well as an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

Dual front and side airbags are supplemented on all models with standard equipment full length side curtain airbags to protect occupants front and rear. There are three-point seatbelts in all seating positions, those in the front seats with load limiting pretensioners. Two ISOFIX fittings in both the left and right rear seats together with tether anchor points in the rear roof ensure correct installation and provide secure child seat mounting points.

    Active headrests

Jazz is also equipped with front seat active headrests which reduce the likelihood of neck injury in rear impacts. As the occupant is pushed against the seat back, a rigid plate in the seat presses a link to the headrest pushing it up and forward to support the head.

As well as the introduction of the ACE body structure, the body rigidity of the Jazz is considerably enhanced and makes a major contribution to its class leading refinement and ride comfort. Lateral rigidity at the front of the car is up 164 per cent, for example, while vertical rigidity is 19 per cent better; equivalent figures at the rear are 48 and 25 per cent, respectively. It means that the suspension has been tuned for even greater levels of comfort and sharper handling.
    Key changes include:

    • Closed, rather than open, section front bulkhead – increases front body rigidity without increasing weight
    • Reinforced rear damper mounting and rear frame section enlarged
    • Straight side frames introduced
    • A-pillar base, B-pillar to side sill connection and rear frame modified for greater rigidity
    • Modified mating structure for rear cross member panel.
    • Unified floor cross member reduces weight

Jazz is covered by a 12 year corrosion warranty.

    INTERIOR

    • Central fuel tank layout retained
    • Larger body brings increased rear seat accommodation, more shoulder room and larger luggage bay
    • Unique Magic Seats now one-motion dive-down
    • Double-Trunk boot adds to luggage bay flexibility (1.4 models with tyre repair kit)
    • Improved visibility front and rear thanks to larger windscreen, slimmer A-pillars and retractable rear seat headrests
    • Improved refinement, materials and enhanced quality create relaxing, comfortable cabin
    • Availability of USB adapter for iPod connection and Bluetooth HFT operation
    • Panorama roof on 1.4 EX

The ingenious layout of the previous Jazz, with its short nose design, compact suspension and unique centre fuel tank layout liberating additional interior space to place cabin accommodation on a par with many C-segment models, is retained in the Jazz. The increased dimensions of the body and a windscreen positioned further forward means, however, that there is even more room in the latest model, making it the roomiest, most flexible contender in its class, and in some aspects better than B-segment MPVs.

It is even more practical. The model offers the widely acclaimed Magic Seats that have proved such a popular feature of the previous Jazz, but they now feature a one-motion, dive-down functionality which doesn’t require the front seats to be moved forward first. And luggage space, up from 380 litres to 399 litres (tyre repair kit-equipped models), has greater versatility on 1.4 models with the introduction of the Double-Trunk boot feature. There are also a number of thoughtfully designed additional storage features spread around the cabin.

    2008 Honda Jazz Interior

Jazz offers a larger, more relaxing cabin in which seats are designed for greater comfort, all round visibility is significantly better and increased dimensions allow passengers more room to stretch out in a spacious and airy interior.
Much of the car’s increased length is devoted to improved rear seat comfort and passengers now have 18 mm greater kneeroom and 8 mm more headroom. The distance between front and rear passengers is up by 30mm compared to the previous model which already offered a tandem distance on a par with much larger cars. Shoulder room is up 44mm in the front, 43 mm in the rear.

Honda’s design team has placed particular emphasis on improving visibility for the driver. Moving the A-pillar further forward plays a significant part and together with retractable rear seat headrests, the driver has a considerably improved view both front and rear.

    Larger glass area

A-pillar width reduced by 23 mm, a windscreen 25 mm wider and 205 mm taller, together with redesigned wipers that sit well below the line of sight, mean forward visibility has been improved by some 20 per cent overall. Furthermore, the front quarter windows are approximately three times the size of those in the previous Jazz and the door mirror mounts are actually reduced in size, even though the mirror surface area is increased by almost a third.
Retractable rear seat headrests result in rearward visibility up from 72 to virtually 100 per cent.

    Added serenity
Even greater refinement means the Jazz’s cabin is a pleasant place to be thanks to the greater body rigidity which minimises noise and vibration during idling as well as any booming noise when cruising. Noise from the engine during acceleration and road noise are also reduced considerably thanks to extra use of lightweight sound absorbing materials in the roof, carpet and dashboard.

front seats are fitted with springs and padding optimised for greater comfort and better support and grip during cornering, as well as active headrests for greater safety. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel with a wider range of adjustment, 50 mm driver’s seat height adjustment via a ratchet lever, wider pedal spacing and a footrest for the left foot ensure a comfortable position for the vast majority of drivers.
Rear seat passengers also benefit from larger seats, now 20 mm wider, 15 mm deeper and with seat cushions 10 mm thicker.

Front seats are heated on 1.4 ES and EX models, while the EX also has front and rear seat armrests.

Jazz’s interior is upholstered in two colour combinations: 1.2-litre models are equipped with a blue/black fabric, with blue seat and door trim inserts, while all other 1.4-litre models have a black/dark grey treatment.
The fascia is set low for good forward visibility and features a large three meter instrument cluster with central speedometer, a tachometer on the left and a fuel gauge to the right. Permanent back lit illumination ensures good legibility even in low light conditions. Silver meter surrounds are complemented by gun metallic-finish dials with a red acrylic scale raised above the surface to create a 3D effect.

Contained within the centre of the speedometer face is an LCD multi-information display showing a variety of information including a speed alarm, instant and average fuel economy, range, outside temp and a service indicator based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) – controls positioned on the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle through the displays.

The indicators have a soft touch mode: gently touching the appropriate lever causes that indicator to flash three times before self-cancelling, making lane changes on motorways, for example, effortless.

    Audio systems

All models from 1.2 LS and above are equipped with a single CD/audio system with MP3/WMA playback capability. Its stylish face panel seamlessly integrates into the fascia and features a black background LCD and auxiliary jack. Volume automatically adjusts in accordance with vehicle speed. The simple-to-use rotary control is of the push-turn-push type. A rear-mounted micro antenna with automatic gain control can improve sensitivity when radio reception is weak.
On 1.4 ES and EX models, the four high quality polypropylene speakers are supplemented with a pair of tweeters, while fifth generation and later iPods and a variety of other digital audio players can now be played via the audio system using the USB adapter located in the centre console storage box. Playback using the main audio controls also provides simultaneous charging of the device (depending on type).

    Bluetooth-enabled

The Jazz 1.4 EX is provided with a Bluetooth wireless mobile phone interface, allowing hands-free operation, controlled via a steering wheel-mounted switch. A series of speakers and microphones installed in the car can connect to any Bluetooth-enabled communications device, allowing calls to be made safely while driving.
Features include display of the phone number, phone mode and battery status in the multi-information display; continuation of a phone conversation started outside the car, simply by turning on the ignition to ‘ACC’ and then switching to hands free; and automatic transfer of numbers which can be accessed with HFT and speech recognition – in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

    Cabin storage

Jazz comes complete with plenty of handy in-cabin storage able to swallow a large amount of family clutter.
Separated into upper and lower compartments and separated by a shallow tray, the two-tier glovebox offers greater versatility. The upper section comes complete with pen and card holders and, on 1.4 ES/EX models, a valve which can be opened to provide a stream of cooling air to chill a bottle or drinks can.

There are no less than 10 cup/bottle holders spread around the cabin – one at either end of the instrument panel, two in the centre console ahead of the gear lever, two behind the handbrake, and one in each of the four door pockets set into the curved door panels.
The versatile front console storage can also accommodate a variety of items such as drinks cartons, iPods, mobile phones or a box of tissues. Added flexibility is provided by a subdivider which can be turned through 180 degrees to vary the storage dimensions. To the right of the steering wheel is a fascia pocket.

There is now also a handy compartment in the base of the left hand rear seat, accessible when it is folded upwards. Opened by unscrewing two knurled wheels, it is able to accommodate the owner’s manual.
The air conditioning – a manual system on the 1.2 LS, and automatic on 1.4 models – offers improved cooling performance with increased air flow, while using less refrigerant and power; the fan is also quieter. The high performance dust filter can be supplemented with an optional high performance deodorant filter.

Air conditioning controls are spaced around the audio system within easy reach of the driver.

    1.4 EX panorama roof

For the ultimate in cabin airiness and a real sense of spaciousness, the 1.4 EX model comes with a full length panorama roof. 721 mm wide and 938 mm long, it extends back far enough to give rear seat passengers the same sky view as those in front. Although the glass has high heat absorbing properties, there is also a power sun shade which can be opened and closed at the touch of a switch to create a comfortable cabin environment all year round..

Jazz’s acclaimed Magic Seats now even more convenient

One of the most distinctive elements of the previous generation Jazz and a key factor in its popularity was the Magic Seats design acclaimed for its flexibility and multiple seating and cargo-carrying configurations. The Jazz not surprisingly retains the arrangement but is now even more user-friendly. Front seats no longer need to be slid forward to give the rear seat sufficient clearance as it is folded down. Instead, even with the front seats in their rearmost position, the 60:40 split rear seats with their retractable headrests can be collapsed in a simple ‘one-motion’ dive-down action by means of a lever located on the outside shoulder of the seat.

In this ‘Utility Mode’, Jazz offers a perfectly flat load floor, a maximum 1720 mm in length, sufficient to swallow three 26 inch mountain bikes with front wheels still attached, stood upright. The actual surface area equates to two large and two extra-large Samsonite suitcases laid flat; similarly, three golf bags can be laid lengthwise. With the larger rear seat portion alone collapsed, there is sufficient space and length to accommodate a surfboard laid flat; or two 26 inch mountain bikes stood upright. The available load length is even greater in ‘Long Mode’ where the front passenger seat is slid fully forward and its seatback fully reclined – opening up a 2.4 m long load space.

To return the rear seats to a seating position, you simply lift the assembly back up; the seat bottom remains locked to the seat back and is simply released by pulling up the leg frame and the seat bottom folded down.

This locking seat base action adds further innovation and Jazz’s unique offer, since in ‘Tall Mode’ the seat bases can be left raised and locked against the seat backs, creating a second load area between front and rear seats capable of holding a variety of objects up to 1280 mm in height, such as tall plants, two mountain bikes with their front wheels removed, a folded wheelchair, and all manner of other items. And since the rear doors now open wider, it is even easier to make full use of this feature.

Magic Seats now complemented by Double-Trunk boot

The same levels of innovation are found in the luggage bay of the Jazz which now offers a class-leading capacity that betters some B-segment compact MPVs.
Beneath the boot floor lies a secondary storage compartment and on 1.4 models the provision of an emergency tyre repair kit in place of a space-saver spare wheel frees up this space, adding an extra 64 litres to give an exceptional load capacity of 399 litres (VDA) compared to the 380 litres of the previous generation Jazz (9 litres of underfloor storage with space saver wheel).

Double-Trunk boot system is also introduced on 1.4-litre Jazz models with tyre repair kit, giving owners greater convenience and perfectly complementing the Magic Seats arrangement.
In ‘Regular Mode’, the under floor storage area is concealed by a 100 kg-capacity double hinged panel. This panel can be folded against the rear seats in ‘Tall Mode’ to make use of the full depth of the load space enabling particularly tall objects to be carried.

Alternatively, rather than folding the complete panel against the rear seat backs, its rear half can be raised into a horizontal position, and supported by fixtures in the load bay sides, to create a mid-height storage shelf and effectively separating the luggage space into upper and lower sections – the so called ‘Upper/lower Mode’. The net contained within the upper panel is perfect for carrying irregularly shaped objects that won’t sit flat.

The 230 mm deep under floor space is ideal for storing sports gear or raincoats and umbrellas and once the lid is on, you don’t have to worry about soiling other luggage.
A load lip 605 mm from the ground makes for easy loading and unloading.
Finally, a useful shopping bag hook is located just inside the left hand side of the luggage bay.

    DRIVETRAIN

    • i-VTEC 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol engines
    • Lower CO2 emissions, enhanced fuel economy and improved performance
    • Tumble inducing intake ports
    • Low friction engine design
    • Drive-by-wire throttle control
    • Standard 5-speed manual transmission
    • Latest 6-speed i-SHIFT automated manual transmission with paddle shifters optional on 1.4-litre engine

Honda has set out to provide the Jazz with a best in class balance between fuel economy and fun-to-drive performance. In place of the two-valve i-DSI technology used in the previous Jazz, the latest range is powered by newly-developed four-valve i-VTEC petrol engines of either 1.2-litre or 1.4-litre capacity that deliver lively performance and plentiful torque across all engine speeds.

A capacity of 1198cc makes the 1.2-litre engine slightly smaller than its predecessor yet power rises from 78 to 90 PS at a slightly higher 6000 rpm; similarly torque increases from 110 Nm to 114 Nm at 4900 rpm.
1.4-litre engine shares the same 1339cc swept volume as the previous i-DSI engine but output is up from 83 to 100 PS, again at a slightly higher 6000 rpm. Torque is boosted to 127 Nm at 4800 rpm compared to the i-DSI engine’s 119 Nm at 2800 rpm.

    i-VTEC

Honda’s familiar VTEC variable valve timing system helps to make possible the balance between efficiency and power and employs a two rocker arm design per cylinder on the intake valves. This incorporates friction-reducing roller followers for each pair of intake valves, along with intake cam lobes configured to optimise both low and high speed operation. Depending on engine load and engine speed, an electronic controller determines which cam profile will be used and exactly how the intake valves will operate.

At low revs, where low lift and shorter duration provide optimal operation, the timing of the two intake valves is staggered and the lift asymmetrically skewed in favour of the primary valve. This helps to create a strong swirl effect within the combustion chamber that increases the efficiency of the burn process. At higher rpm, a hydraulically actuated spool valve causes a locking pin to engage the secondary rocker arm with the primary one, transitioning the secondary valve into a long-duration mode that increases the volume of air/fuel mixture moving into the combustion chamber. This additional mixture helps increase power at high engine speeds.
The head utilises a narrow, 30-degree design between the intake and exhaust valves, contributing to the overall compact size.

As well as VTEC valve-train technology, other notable features are an improved combustion chamber shape, a drive-by-wire throttle control, a composite intake manifold with a long runner design that contributes to good low and mid-range torque output and friction reducing technologies. These include roller-tipped rocker arms, an offset crankshaft/connecting rod design, lateau honing of the cylinders for a smoother surface, a special piston surface coating which is better at oil retention and optimised piston ring tension. A narrow-width timing chain and tensioner reduce weight.

High-strength ‘fracture split’ connecting rods provide a significant reduction in the inertial mass of moving parts for increased efficiency (‘fracture-split’ refers to the manufacturing process whereby the connecting rods are forged in one piece and then their crankshaft ends are broken, creating a lighter and stronger rod with a perfectly fitted bearing cap).

The exhaust manifold is cast directly into the alloy cylinder head to reduce weight and allows the optimal positioning of the primary close-coupled catalytic converter; together with exhaust gas recirculation and a high accuracy air/fuel ratio control – comprising intake air flow sensor, linear air flow sensor ahead of the close coupled cat and a rear oxygen sensor ahead of the rear cat – Jazz offers excellent emissions performance.

Electronic drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle control optimises the throttle aperture when the accelerator is depressed for quick and precise delivery of fuel to the engine, so maximising efficiency.
The end result is an engine design with good low end torque, high-revving power and a high level of fuel efficiency.

    Transmissions
1.2 and 1.4-litre models are equipped with an evolution of the previous 5-speed manual transmission with gear ratios optimised for driveability whilst ensuring good fuel economy.
Key improvements include a revised clutch pedal stroke, carbon-type synchroniser on third gear to minimise shift load, crisper shifting through reduced clutch disc inertia and improved refinement.

Manual transmission-equipped models feature the SIL (Shift Indicator Light) within the centre of the rev counter, also found on the latest Honda Accord. Providing the driver with a visual prompt of the best gear shift points to maximise economy, it has been demonstrated to provide meaningful fuel economy savings.

    i-SHIFT (6-speed automated manual transmission)

As well as a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 1.4-litre engine can be teamed up with Honda’s latest i-SHIFT transmission, first introduced in the Civic range. The 6-speed automated manual transmission in this vehicle offers better fuel economy than is possible with either a conventional automatic or a CVT (continuously variable transmission).
The unit is a development of the system first fitted to the Civic, with improvements made including; reduced gear change times, smoother shifts and more intelligent automatic mode shift logic.

The driver can choose between either an Auto Mode for a more relaxed driving style, or for a sportier driving experience, Manual Mode via the gearshift or steering wheel mounted paddles – that on the left controlling downshifts, that on the right upshifts.

Automatic Mode is selected by moving the gearshift to the left of the main gate, while sequential changes in Manual Mode are made by moving the lever either forwards (up changes) or backwards (down changes) in the main gate or by using the paddles.

The shift lever requires only a short – 13.5 mm – movement to select the next gear so emulating a sporty driving feel. Furthermore, reverse is in the conventional manual transmission position, thus permitting selection without requiring a visual check from the driver.

The conventional clutch pedal is replaced by a Transmission Control Unit that controls the clutch via an actuator with hydraulic power generated by a DC motor; gear changes are smooth and quick as a result, without compromising the system’s sportiness.

It is perfectly possible to override automatic mode momentarily, by switching to paddle operation – so for example the driver can change down a couple of gears for added acceleration..
The selected gear in both automatic and manual modes is shown in a display located within the fuel gauge dial, with the letter ‘A’ supplementing the gear number when automatic is selected.

The i-SHIFT gearbox is designed to adapt to different driving conditions by means of a series of shift maps. For example, when driving downhill, the system will shift down to provide engine braking. Similarly, shifting is prevented through a corner if there is any possibility of upsetting the car’s balance.

Other safeguards mean that at low rpm the system will not shift up, even if instructed to do so, thus preventing malfunction and engine knocking. And there is an automatic upshift just before the red line in order to avoid damaging the engine by over revving. When the car stops in fourth gear, the system will automatically shift back to first in both modes.

After starting the engine with the lever in neutral, the system defaults to automatic mode. When manual mode is selected, the driver may opt to start in 2nd gear. In-gear parking is also possible by turning the engine off when the shift indicator shows either first gear or reverse.

i-SHIFT models are also equipped with Hill Start Assist (HSA). When pulling away from standstill on an incline, HSA continues to apply the brakes for a couple of seconds as the driver moves his or her foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator, thus preventing roll back.

    CHASSIS

    • Greater agility, improved ride comfort
    • Longer wheelbase, wider track and 15 inch or 16 inch wheels
    • Modified front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension
    • Revised geometry and uprated EPS components improve steering feel and stability
    • Uprated brakes
    • VSA available on all models
    • Turning circle unchanged for excellent manoeuvrability

Together with the more powerful engines, greater in cabin refinement and a series of suspension revisions, Jazz offers greater agility and pleasant, more comfortable driving dynamics. Higher body rigidity ensures a more responsive, and at the same time more supple, suspension.

Key improvements include the increased wheelbase and wider track for greater stability, larger wheels, improved steering feel and a suspension that retains the same basic layout but benefits from a number of changes in layout and geometry. And despite the slightly increased dimensions, the turning circle kerb to kerb is identical to the previous Jazz at a tight 9.8m, ensuring superb manoeuvrability about town.

    Geometry revisions

The front MacPherson struts feature optimised geometry and a revised lower suspension arm bushing which rather than working in a vertical direction – as in the previous Jazz – requiring it to be very rigid to resist vertical movement, is now located longitudinally. Lower arm input twists the bush axis for more stable suspension characteristics, allowing the bush to have a lower spring rate.

Front wheel caster angle has been increased from 2.2 to 3.3 degrees and the caster trail from 5 to 20 mm which has the effect of boosting straight line stability.
Jazz’s rear suspension continues to use a compact H-shaped torsion beam which means the load floor can be kept low with a resulting increase in luggage capacity.

The ‘H’ section has been revised, however, while other changes include a 39 mm longer trailing arm, a trailing arm bush capacity increased by almost 50 per cent and, by moving the spring and damper assemblies further back relative to the wheel, a spring lever ratio changed from 1.5 to 1.1. Those changes translate on the road to a much smoother, more comfortable ride.

Rear roll steer characteristics have also been improved for increased stability during cornering. Over the total rear wheel movement, the degree of camber change and the amount of toe in under compression and toe out on rebound are all increased.

    Vehicle Stability Assist

All Jazz models can be equipped with Honda’s Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system which is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking independently on all four wheels as necessary and managing the engine torque systems.

At its simplest level, VSA has a traction control function whereby it detects wheel slip under acceleration and coordinates the use of braking and engine torque to regain traction. In situations where the driven wheels are on surfaces with different levels of traction, such as a partially wet road surface, the system applies braking action to the wheel that’s slipping, allowing the tyre with better grip to move the vehicle. In addition, the system reduces engine output to minimise wheelspin.

By monitoring input from a series of vehicle sensors, VSA calculates a predicted range of vehicle response while constantly monitoring the vehicle’s actual response and the driver’s control inputs. If the actual response is outside the predicted response range, as when cornering forces exceed the tyres’ performance, VSA automatically intervenes with corrective action.

In the case of oversteer (which may lead to a spin), VSA applies braking to the outside wheel to counter the yawing tendency. On the other hand, if understeer is detected, VSA applies braking to the inside wheel and reduces engine power to turn the car back on to the intended course.

An indicator light flashes on the instrument panel while the system is actively enhancing the stability of the vehicle. A cockpit switch to the side of the instrument panel is provided to disable the VSA.

    More communicative steering

Jazz continues to use electric power steering, but in the latest model the system has been completely revised and feedback and stability have been considerably enhanced for a more direct steering feel and a more enjoyable driving experience.

Both the rigidity of the steering gearbox and its installation have been increased and together with a motor capacity increased from 40 to 60 A and the revised suspension geometry described above, the result is a light steering feel at low speeds and good stability at high speeds with improved on centre feel.

    Uprated brakes

The braking system comprises ventilated discs at the front and discs at the rear and all Jazz models are equipped with an ABS system with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist functionality as standard equipment. Greater stopping power comes courtesy of larger front brake callipers, while brake pedal feel has been optimised and now requires less driver effort to achieve the same effect.

1.2 S and LS, and 1.4 LS models are equipped with 15 inch steel wheels fitted with twin 5-spoke trims and shod with 175/65 R15 tyres. Jazz 1.4 ES gains 5-spoke alloy wheels of the same size, while the 1.4 EX model has a choice of 15 inch or 16 inch twin 5-spoke alloys .

  • New SEAT Ibiza SportCoupe

2009 Seat Ibiza SportCoupeIbiza SportCoupe raises the bar of sportiness on SEAT’s newest model, combining impressive, vanguard exterior design with exceptional dynamic qualities and a wide range of engine options, which now includes the efficient 80 hp 1.4 and 90 hp 1.9 diesel versions. In addition, with a seven-speed DSG transmission making its debut in this segment, the Ibiza range now features a technical innovation that provides it with greater response and excellent driving comfort.

The fundamental sportiness of the SEAT brand is maximised in the Ibiza SportCoupe thanks to its compact coupé body. With a length of 4.034 metres and height of 1.428 metres to match its character, the proportions lend the car both agility and comfort in the city and on the motorway. Likewise, the Volkswagen Group platform designed for this segment also favours the dynamic qualities of the SEAT Ibiza SC.

Design and precision quality are two elements that distinguish the brand’s model from its competitors. The aesthetic and practical vision of the car created by SEAT Design Director Luc Donckerwolke with the SportCoupé “Bocanegra” prototype lends unique strength and personality to the 2008 Ibiza SportCoupe.

The evolution of the “Dynamic Line” and the “Arrow Design” concept are noteworthy – the latter characterised by a lower positioning of the headlights and radiator grille for a sportier look, and the robust look of the rear features light clusters set into prominent shoulders.

Painstaking interior and exterior detailing on the Ibiza SC include the dashboard, the instrument panel, ventilation nozzles and central console, which houses audio equipment and the Bluetooth connection, accessed via controls located on the steering column.

    5-star Euro NCAP result

Safety aspects have been carefully considered, with the application of strenuous virtual simulations and real crash tests. The addition of head-thorax airbags as standard enhances the safety credentials on the ibiza, while a newly defined bonnet and front bumper greatly increase pedestrian safety.

Proof of this is an excellent rating after the stringent crash tests organised by the prestigious Euro NCAP organisation – 5 stars in passenger protection, 4 stars in child safety and 3 stars in pedestrian protection.

    Top-notch equipment

SEAT model can boast one of the most complete lists of safety feeatures in its segment, including standard ESP (Electronic Stability Control), Hill Hold Control – where the car remains stationary on a gradient for two seconds after the brake pedal is released prior to accelerating, and the low tyre-pressure warning system. It also includes the sweeping sidelight cornering function on the foglamps, which greatly enhances visibility in turns at speeds lower than 40 km/h.

Also noteworthy is the availability of bi-xenon + AFS (Adaptive Frontlighting System) headlights, a rear parking assistant, radio-integrated Bluetooth connection, and a portable navigation pre-installation in the centre of the dashboard.

DSG gearbox for the first time in this segment

SEAT Ibiza SportCoupé is equipped with a seven-speed DSG gearbox (on the 105 hp 1.6 version) for the first time in this segment, placing the Spanish brand’s car in an enviable position compared with its rivals. The Ibiza’s inherent sportiness combines with the comfort and reliability of one of the most efficient automatic transmissions on the market.

With shorter first and second gears and a smaller gear ratio, this, twin-clutch automatic transmission provides the Ibiza SportCoupé with greater acceleration. In addition, this system produces remarkable fuel consumption, since the seventh gear is ideal for long motoring trips.

    The full offer on sale

The range includes three petrol engines – the 70 hp 1.2, 85 hp 1.4 and 105 hp 1.6; as well as three diesel engines each with a DPF particulate filter – the 80 hp 1.4 TDI and the newcomers 90 and 105 hp 1.9 TDI. All engines are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, except the 105 hp 1.6, which of course is equipped with the seven-speed DSG, and feature reduced consumption levels and CO2 emissions – less than 120 g/km for the diesel engines and less than 160 g/km for the petrol units.

Agile, seductive and characterful, the Ibiza SC will be available in three trim levels – Reference, Stylance and Sport, with an outstanding standard equipment list from the entry-level model. In the near future, the Ibiza range will be joined by the ecological ECOMOTIVE, plus sporty FR and Cupra versions.

As with the 5-door version, the Ibiza SportCoupé will be manufactured exclusively at the SEAT Martorell factory near Barcelona.

    EXTERIOR DESIGN
    Modern and distinctive

    • 3-door body with distinct coupé styling
    • Arrow Design concept makes front end more aggressive
    • Strikingly modern Dynamic Line

The cutting-edge, emotional design of the Ibiza SportCoupé demands close scrutiny, in order to take in all the detailing created by the talented Design team led by Luc Donckerwolke.

It is quite evident that the Ibiza SportCoupé carries several elements of the SportCoupé “Bocanegra”, the SEAT prototype showcased at the last Geneva Motor Show, which previewed what is today the Ibiza. To begin with, the aggressively bold arrowhead shaped front end seen on the “Bocanegra” is one of the most distinctive traits also found on the newest SEAT car.

“Arrow Design” concept resorts to simpler, more defined geometric lines that create both balance and aesthetic continuity. The front end looks are much sportier due to the positioning of the captivating eye-shaped headlights and the radiator grille.

In profile, the car reveals two details – the position of the door mirrors and the direction taken by the classic SEAT Dynamic Line.

The door mirrors are located on the door itself beneath the base of the windows, a design trait that lends a sporty image.

Luc Donckerwolke has redefined the Dynamic Line, making it more suggestive with the aim of attracting attention at first glance, with the perfect stroke across the side of the new Ibiza.

The robust shoulders stand out at the rear, where the inset light clusters are, the rear hatch has been newly designed, and the addition of a refined spoiler that blends in with the roofline in a perfectly designed curve lend a more compact, more suggestive look to the vehicle.

The coupé styling reduces the Ibiza’s length and height when compared to the 5-door version, which contributes to making the SEAT Ibiza SportCoupé the sportiest car in its segment. This characteristic is heightened with a colour palette, including Fashion Colours Lumina Orange, Galia Blue, Furia Grey and Limette, since the target of the SportCoupé is portrayed as a youthful car enthusiast who is proud of the performance delivered by the 2008 Ibiza.

    INTERIOR CONCEPT
    Sportier driving position

    • Driver oriented dashboard
    • Greater quality materials and precision fit elements
    • 284 litre boot volume

The philosophy applied to designing the interior of the Ibiza SportCoupé is based on facing all the instruments toward the driver to create a sporty atmosphere to match the car’s exterior.

The interior dimensions are uncluttered, resulting in greater roominess and practicality. The first thing that attracts attention is the sporty driving position, which has been lowered by 22 mm. Now there is a distance of 980 mm to the ceiling for both the driver and passenger.

Since the vehicle is longer, the boot capacity is 284 litres (17 litres greater than on the previous Ibiza). On selected versions, the side lining includes a storage net for small objects, and a recess with a strap to hold the light bulb case. Surrounding the lock there is also a recess and restraints for the emergency triangles, and there are four further optional anchor rings to attach a restraining net.

The sporty dashboard features an ergonomic driver-oriented instrument panel with two large circular dials for easy visual access.

Available across the range, some areas on the dashboard are soft to the touch. They are located away from the windscreen dazzles and feature a broader colour range, including light shades. There are also noticeably more painted components compared with the previous model, including metallic tones. The circular air nozzles guarantee the ideal air flow direction for greater passenger comfort.

SEAT has carefully chosen the materials that make up the dashboard and improved the development of the textures, which are now more scratch resistant and easier to clean. In general, the visual impact is much greater than on the previous Ibiza.

    Practical central console

The buttons on the console include several functions, such as the hazard lights, door locking/unlocking, TCS disconnection, tyre pressure, seat heater and a warning to indicate if the passenger airbag is disconnected.

There are also three object holders, and each one is suitable for housing an ashtray, as well as a lower side recess for a mobile phone. On the driver side there is a compartment beneath the light switch, and an integrated drawer can be optionally installed beneath the glove compartment to hold an umbrella and the emergency vest. In the lining of the lower A pillar, which is a single piece along with the sill (on the previous Ibiza there were two pieces) there is also a storage pouch.

The shape of the front seats follows a modern design. With optimised firmness, the sides give much greater support, the seats feature side stitching and there are two pockets on the rear backrest (optional on Reference) and two optional storage drawers beneath.

The passenger seat features the “Easy entry” system, where the backrest folds and slides at the same time, providing more room and better access to the rear seats.

As on the 5-door version, the Ibiza SC features a front central armrest which is optional across the range. It is upholstered and contains a handy storage compartment. Its ergonomic position and height have been studied for easy driver access, and can be folded open 90 degrees.

    SAFETY AND STRUCTURE
    Five-star Euro NCAP result

    • Brilliant results after Euro NCAP testing
    • One of the safest vehicles in its segment
    • Body parts use 60% high and very high resistance steel

SEAT Ibiza received an excellent rating after stringent crash tests organised by the prestigious Euro NCAP organisation – 5 stars in passenger protection (of a total of 5), 4 stars in child safety (of a total of 5) and 3 stars in pedestrian protection (of a total of 4). This result places the Spanish model in a privileged position, scoring it as one of the safest cars of its segment.

Ibiza performed magnificently in all the tests, with a total of 34 points in occupant safety (including the highest score in the side impact and pole tests), for a 5-star rating.

The Ibiza scored 38 points or 4 stars in child protection, making it one of the best models in this category of protection.

The last test evaluated pedestrian protection. Ibiza achieved an excellent result of 19 points, deserving 3 stars, with a green bumper rating which is the best for this part of the car.

Occupant protection features two airbag setups

The Euro NCAP results would not have been possible without the efforts made by SEAT’s Technical Centre in Martorell. The Ibiza SportCoupé features two airbag setups – one standard, which includes side head-thorax airbags and two front airbags; and alternative equipment which includes side thorax-pelvis airbags and head airbags.

The safety concept has been considerable enhanced on the generation Ibiza. One key area is the development of a passenger airbag module, focussing efforts on improving the airbag’s performance under extreme temperature conditions. Results are a weight reduction and less complexity than on the previous model.

This evolution has not only affected the performance of the passenger airbag, but has also improved the looks of the dashboard, since the deployment area on the lining is seamless and invisible to the eye.

The Ibiza SC also features a fasten seatbelt warning system for the front seats and Isofix anchoring points for the rear seats, enabling two child seats to be securely fastened. A complementary accessory is the possibility of installing a third anchoring point called Top Tether, which prevents the child seat from rotating in the event of a crash.

Active safety elements on the Ibiza include ABS, TCS and ESP with EBA and tyre pressure warning.

    Pedestrian safety – essential

Improving pedestrian protection is one definite area of safety closely studied on the Ibiza, as the Euro NCAP results have shown. The two zones on the car that are more prone to cause injuries to a pedestrian’s head and lower legs are the bonnet and the bumper.

The bonnet features two areas of maximum energy absorption where the risk of causing head injuries is the greatest. On the whole, the great distance between the bumper and its crossbeam but no distance between the bumper and its rear support both contribute to protecting the legs in the event of collision.

The former guarantees that the knee avoids impact and at the same time advances forward and reduces its acceleration. The latter implies that the resulting zone is very rigid (the spoiler beneath the bumper) and not prone to deformation, so a leg impact prevents the shinbone from advancing. Euro NCAP’s green bumper rating is the best for this part of the car.

The combination of both conditions causes reduced angles related to the femur/shinbone, much less than 15 degrees, which implies that a pedestrian’s legs do not suffer any injuries.

    More lightweight, more rigid body

The right balance between rigidity and weight reduction (47 kg on average) has been achieved in the development of the sheet metal body parts of the Ibiza thanks to the 60% use of high and very high resistance steel (5% more than on the previous Ibiza) on the highest load-bearing areas. At the same time, this implies greater energy efficiency and material savings during both production and the car’s afterlife.

Laser welding has also been applied on the body of the Ibiza to join the roof with the flanks, like on the former model, but extended until the seam that joins the A pillar and the windscreen. The use of adhesives has been increased by 50%, maintaining the same number of welding points.

    Innovative panoramic sunroof

The Ibiza SportCoupé is equipped with a panoramic sunroof that covers the entire width of the roof, from the windscreen to beyond the B pillar. It is 130% larger than on the previous Ibiza, with a solid frame around the glass. Its dimensions let in 78% more light than on the former model. The sunroof has two positions – open and closed – that are controlled by a switch on the dashboard. It also has a manual window blind to regulate the amount of light entering the passenger compartment.

    Optimised manufacturing processes

The commitment to achieve increasingly demanding and complex design concepts has directly influenced the optimisation of technological applications during manufacturing processes, specifically the area of the front mudguard attached to the front end, the area of the tail lights and the water duct, where parts that are difficult to stamp have been created, and the boot, where the floor and the stamping depth of the rear wall have led to greater volume.

Thanks to the rust protection measures applied to the body of the Ibiza, SEAT can offer a three-year corrosion guarantee against surface rust and a twelve-year guarantee against perforation rust. Such protection is the result of applying surface treatments, sealants to protect the body and the undercarriage and waxing cavities.

The surface coatings applied are water-based, which reduces emissions of volatile organic compounds and eliminates paint toxicity during the painting process. The paint composition has been modified and is now a dual compound that increases weathering and enhances gloss.

Undercarriage protection has been improved with the introduction of streamlining that has reduced the use of PVC by 2.6 kg while increasing the possibility of recycling (95% of the SEAT Ibiza can be recycled). Furthermore, structural cavities have been additionally insulated, resulting in water tightness and better acoustics.

    CHASSIS
    Standard ESP

    • Wider tracks and greater wheel diameter
    • Significant modifications to steering and brake systems
    • Improved “Agile Chassis”

There are four factors that directly influence the sportiness of the SEAT Ibiza SportCoupé – wider tracks, greater distance between shafts, larger diameter wheels and a substantial improvement to the Agile Chassis concept that affects all the elements and systems anchored to it, such as suspensions, steering and brakes.

Add standard ESP electronic stability to these, which was first available in this segment on the Ibiza Cupra in 2000, as well as TCS traction control, and the response of the SEAT Ibiza in any situation is extraordinary.

TCS acts on the engine management to prevent the wheels from skidding on slick surfaces. Furthermore, the Ibiza is also equipped with EBA (Emergency Brake Assistance), which increases braking power in emergency situations, taking advantage of the system’s full capacity.

    Enhanced dynamic qualities

The track width has directly influenced the need to carry out modifications to both wheel shafts. The front shaft is 30 mm wider, which prompted modifying the steering gear, the front sub-chassis, stabiliser bar, both lower transversal arms and the drive shaft ball joint.

On the Ibiza, the sub-chassis is a single part and provides tighter specifications to the area where it is attached to the body and on the lower crossbeams, resulting in improved kinematics precision.

The assembly including the ball joint and transversal arm has displaced the centre of the wheel by five mm, increasing the distance between shafts and enabling the use of wheels with 2% more diameter.

The transversal arms are attached to the sub-chassis with a different silentblock, which gives the front shaft greater agility.

On the coil/shock absorber assembly, a washer corrects the position and the movement of the coil spring while the hydraulic shock absorber’s internal valves improve road handling and driving comfort.

The main difference on the rear shaft is also related to the wider track. The 33 mm increase has resulted in a different setup and the need for silent-blocks to join it to the body.

To complement the adaptations made arising from the wider tracks and the position of the hydraulic pump, the EHPS (Electrically Powered Hydraulic Steering) system’s characteristic assistance curves have been modified to achieve greater sensitivity, reduced catch up, optimised handling, less parking effort and a greater difference between the basic and sporty characteristics.

    Two distinct chassis ratings

The new generation Ibiza features two different ratings for the chassis, one that focuses on comfort and the other on sportier performance. The modifications affect both the front and rear shafts and the steering gear.

All the Ibiza versions come equipped with the normal chassis as standard, while the sporty chassis is only available at no extra cost on the Sport finish, and optional on Reference and Stylance.

The main differences on the front shaft centre on the ratings of the shock absorbers, which develop variable compression and extension depending on speed; the coils, which are around 25% stiffer than on the comfort version, and the stabiliser bar, whose diameter on the sporty version has increased from 18 to 19 mm.

On the rear shaft, the link is 15% stiffer and the silent-blocks that anchor them to the body have been modified, providing more agile, more precise handling. Finally, the software that regulates assistance to the steering gear also varies, and is stiffer on the sporty version.

    Efficient brake system

The brake callipers on the Ibiza SC guarantee more rigidity and less noise. On versions equipped with the 105 hp TDI engine, the disc brakes measure 15 inches to improve efficiency.

On left-hand drive versions, the brake servo diameter has been increased, which greatly improves braking smoothness.

The wider tracks and the greater distance between shafts have made it possible to install larger diameter wheels. Ibiza is available with 185/60 R15 tyres on 15 inch rims, 215/45 R16 tyres on 16 inch rims and 215/40 R17 tyres on 17 inch rims.

    ENGINES AND GEARBOX
First vehicle in its segment with DSG gearbox

    • 7-speed DSG gearbox mated to the 105 hp 1.6 engine
    • additions to the range: 80 hp 1.4 TDI and 90 hp 1.9 TDI engines
    • Three petrol and three diesel engines in all

With the arrival of the SEAT Ibiza SportCoupé, the diesel engine range of the Spanish brand’s most emblematic car now features 80 hp 1.4 TDI and 90 hp 1.9 TDI versions.

The range now features three petrol and three diesel engines, all mated to 5-speed manual gearboxes except the 105 hp 1.6, which is also equipped with the efficient 7-speed DSG gearbox for the first time in this segment. All six engines fully comply with strict EU4 emissions regulations.

    Seven-speed DSG

The Ibiza SportCoupé the first vehicle in its segment equipped with the seven-speed DSG gearbox, which is both highly effective and comfortable in mid-range engines such as the 105 hp 1.6.

Ibiza can boast an attractively complete list of standard elements. With the introduction of ESP (Electronic Stability Control) and Hill Hold Control on the 5-door version, the Ibiza attained an enviable position within its segment. The current addition of the 7-speed DSG gearbox to the range makes the car a veritable benchmark.

With shorter first and second gears and a smaller gear ratio, this, twin-clutch automatic transmission provides the Ibiza with greater acceleration. Additionally, this system allows remarkably low fuel consumption, since the seventh gear is ideal for long motoring trips.

A shorter first gear has a positive effect on accelerating from standstill, and the shorter gear ratios are also more comfortable at any speed.

Designed to withstand a maximum torque of up to 250 Nm, the seven-speed DSG gearbox features two clutch packs. The outer clutch pack drives gears 1, 3, 5 and 7, while the inner clutch pack drives gears 2, 4 and 6 and reverse.

The DSG gearbox is small and lightweight at 73 kg. It is also very fast, with two gears engaged at the same time as the two independent pairs of shafts have their own clutch. When one clutch is engaged and a gear is selected, the next gear is pre-selected but the second clutch remains disengaged, depending on the vehicle speed and the amount of power being requested by the driver.

Both clutch discs on the seven-speed DSG gearbox adopt a pair of dry, organic bonded friction linings that do not require cooling, reducing the amount of oil from 7 to just 1.7 litres. This also eliminates the need for a filter, a radiator and their corresponding hydraulic circuits, simplifying the internal system.

The four-cylinder 1.6 litre petrol engine with 16 valves and multi-point fuel injection equipped with the DSG gearbox delivers 105 hp (77 kW) and 153 Nm of engine torque at 3,800 rpm. Despite its higher performance, fuel consumption is still contained at 6.7 litres, and CO2 emissions fall beneath 160 g at 159 g/km.

The entry-level 1.2 litre petrol engine has a three-cylinder block, a cylinder head with four valves per cylinder and multi-point fuel injection. It develops 70 hp (51 kW) and its maximum engine torque is 112 Nm at 3,000 rpm, giving it exceptional fuel economy and performance levels. Average fuel consumption is 5.9 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions are listed at 139 g/km.

The intermediate 1.4 litre petrol engine has four cylinders, a cylinder head with 16 valves and multi-point fuel injection. It delivers 85 hp (63 kW) and its maximum engine torque is 132 Nm at 3,800 rpm. As with the smallest engine, this one strikes a perfect balance between performance, consumption and emissions. Average fuel consumption is 6.2 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions are listed at 149 g/km.

Diesel range – clean and economical

The entry-level diesel engine on the SEAT Ibiza SportCoupé is the three-cylinder 1.4 TDI with DPF particulate filter and direct fuel injection pump-injector system. Delivering 80 hp, it delivers 195 Nm of engine torque at 1,800-2,200 rpm and offers magnificent fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures – an average of 4.3 litres/100 km and 114 g/km respectively.

The other arrival is the 90 hp 1.9 TDI, also equipped with DPF. This engine completes the range midway between the 80 hp 1.4 TDI and the 105 hp 1.9 TDI. With a maximum torque of 210 Nm at 1,800-2,500 rpm, this engine provides a fuel consumption figure of only 4.5 l/100 km and emission levels of 119 g/km.

The range is complete with the 1.9 litre four cylinder TDI equipped with a direct fuel pump-injection system enhanced with an Intercooler turbo. It develops 105 hp (77 kW) and delivers a maximum torque of 240 Nm at 1,900 rpm. It features a DPF particulate filter and consumes 4.5 litres on average for every 100 km and maintains CO2 emissions at 119 g/km.

The work carried out on the manual and automatic gearboxes contribute to optimising fuel consumption and emissions. The gear ratios programmed and the optimisation of the engine’s electronic management have led to lower engine speeds without reducing the car’s dynamic qualities.

    ELECTRONICS
    Intelligent solutions

    • Hill hold control and tyre pressure warning as standard
    • Bi-xenon headlamps with AFS technology and foglamps with Cornering function
    • Radio with steering column controls and Bluetooth technology

The fourth generation SEAT Ibiza features a fully, complete standard equipment level with several outstanding solutions aimed at satisfying customer needs.

Thanks to the addition of standard ESP, the Ibiza offers the Hill Hold Control rollback assistant, where the car remains stationary on a slope for two seconds when the brake pedal is released before accelerating, becoming a hand solution for manoeuvring and in city driving.

    Sweeping bi-xenon headlights

Ibiza SportCoupé also features Bi-xenon headlights with AFS (Adaptive Frontlighting System) technology for the first time in this segment, improving the car’s lighting system with two functions – sweeping headlights and daylight driving light.

The first greatly increases visibility around corners, since the headlight beam sweeps in the turn direction according to steering wheel angle and speed, while the second function, located outside the headlights, works as a signal to reduce pedestrian injuries by making the car much more visible.

Ibiza is also equipped with the static cornering light function on the foglamps, which greatly improves visibility on corners when the sidelights come on at speeds lower than 40 km/h. The system is automatically activated with the corresponding indicator signal or when the steering wheel exceeds a certain angle.

It also includes the Coming Home function already seen on other models, which turns on the dipped beams for 30 seconds after removing the key from the ignition.

    Rear parking assistant

The generation Ibiza also features a rear parking assistant which sends a beep to warn of obstacles at the rear through four ultrasound sensors located on the rear bumper.

The driver hears an intermittent beep when the car is put in reverse, and sensors begin measuring from 0.6 metres at the side and 1.6 metres at the rear of the car. When the distance shortens to about 30 cm, the beeping is continuous.

    Portable navigator pre-installation

A portable navigator can be connected to the Ibiza SC thanks to the pre-installation located in the centre console above the vents, which eliminates the need for cables and suction cups to keep it in place on the windscreen.

The handy location of the semi-integrated navigator gives easy access to both the driver and passenger. Currently there is an adaptor available for the Tom Tom One V3, while in future customers can choose among similar navigators.

There is also the possibility of installing a combined USB/Aux-in connection on the dashboard, which is compatible with an iPod, audio MP3 or similar and data storage devices.

The iPod can be controlled from the radio controls located on the steering column, which include volume adjustment, channel finder, audio CD-MP3 and external device control, and direct access to the Menu (Mode), which processes all the information contained in the external devices, created files, telephone, radio, CD, MP3, etc.

For greater comfort, the steering column controls feature a small wheel in the centre that activates any option intuitively. There is also a slot on the console for an iPod and a 12 volt socket.

    Radio integrated Bluetooth connection

Another highlight of the fourth generation Ibiza is the “black panel” radio, which gets its name from its appearance. Both attractive and highly functional, the radio features a sophisticated Bluetooth telephone system, which directly influences driver and passenger comfort and safety.

The sound system includes two bass speakers on the front doors, two tweeters next to the windscreen and two full range speakers on the rear panels.

Depending on the make and model of mobile telephone, the available functions include Signal strength/Call option; Voice dialling, Accept/Reject calls and Microphone On/Off (mute).

Finally, the instrument panel features a multi-function screen with a wide range of information to the driver, such as fuel level, clock, trip computer, outside temperature, distance remaining until the next service appointment, etc.

BMW 6 SeriesTwo dream cars are setting out on the next lap. Featuring highly attractive modifications to their characteristic design, an interior further refined in many details and boasting colour highlights as well as innovations in drive technology and on the driver assistance and safety systems, the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the BMW 6 Series Convertible offer an even greater thrill and more style than ever before.

Indeed, through their looks and style, combined with cutting-edge technology, both models are an authentic representation of the classic Gran Turismo featuring modern highlights together with classic qualities.

The most important innovation within the engine compartment is the diesel engine providing superior torque and economy for the first time in a car of this class, the most powerful 3.0-litre straight-six diesel in the world giving the BMW 6 Series EfficientDynamics of a particularly impressive standard.

The petrol engines also feature a wide range of modern improvements optimising both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, among them High Precision Injection on the straight-six, that is the most advanced system of direct fuel injection, Brake Energy Regeneration, and on-demand control and management of the car’s ancillaries.

Six-speed automatic sports transmission is tailored perfectly to the character of the BMW 6 Series, combining comfortable cruising with the option at any time to use the full power and muscle of the engine for all-out acceleration and driving dynamics.

Style and sport are indeed the strongholds of the BMW 6 Series: Either as an elegant Sports Coupé in the proud tradition of a genuine Gran Turismo or as a dynamic Luxury Convertible enabling the driver and passengers to enjoy the wind rushing by in an incomparable manner. Both models combine their strengths with the convincing everyday driving qualities of a large and spacious 2+2-seater.

The BMW 6 Series Coupé and Convertible stand for a heritage of no less than 70 years dedicated to the thrill of mobility and success in motorsport.

Cars such as the BMW 327/328 Coupé, the BMW 3200 CS, the BMW 3.0 CSi or the first generation of the BMW 6 Series to this day still represent the unique combination of elegance and competition-oriented sportiness so characteristic of BMW.

The history of exclusive and dynamic driving pleasure with nothing but the sky above was originally introduced in the BMW 327 Convertible, the BMW 335 Convertible, and the BMW 503 Convertible, all of them milestones in technology and design, with a strong and lasting impact on the ongoing development of the brand and its products.

The BMW 6 Series today also plays a significant role within the brand’s model portfolio. It is indeed the benchmark for innovation, a powerful expression of progress in technology and, at the same time, the strong performer interacting with a particularly demanding target group. Cars of this kind establish a particularly active relationship between the manufacturer and the customer, the dedicated driver opting for a BMW 6 Series Coupé or, respectively, a BMW 6 Series Convertible showing a clear preference for the BMW brand and, at the same time, a strong affinity to innovations in technology, premium quality, and individual style.

An attitude of this kind creates a particularly close relationship with the product and its features not only prior to, but also after purchasing the car.

Innovations of this standard endorsed and acknowledged by the critical customer of this calibre have the potential to define the progress of the entire brand. This, in turn, makes the BMW 6 Series a role model not only in design, but also in its control and operating concept, its comfort functions, chassis and suspension technology, and driver assistance systems.

More than 75,500 cars built within just over three years are impressive proof of the close link between the BMW brand and the tradition of the sophisticated, top-quality Gran Turismo. In this segment, facing keen competition from a number of high-ranking competitors, the BMW 6 Series, measured in terms of registration figures, ranks a proud second among all luxury sports cars the world over. In other words, right from the start it immediately left all competitors with comparable all-round qualities far behind.

Clearly dynamic: highlights in exterior design.

The BMW 6 Series boasts powerful innovations characteristic of the brand and its leadership over the competition not only through the cars’ power units. For in their design and style, both the 6 Series Coupè and the 6 Series Convertible offer a level of quality only the development process applied by the BMW Group is able to achieve.

While the engineers responsible for developing the drivetrain benefit from skills and the art of engineering going back decades in enhancing the level of perfection to an ever-increasing standard through technologies such as EfficientDynamics, the success of BMW design lies in the ability to interpret the traditional values of the brand with supreme creativity in looking into the future. Hence, the design and styling of the BMW 6 Series clearly reflect the highly dynamic, refined, top-quality and progressive technical standard of the car as a truly authentic rendition of this supreme standard.

The overall design and look of both models, offering perfect harmony and balance to the last detail, is borne out in particular by the sculptural look of both cars, the Coupé and Convertible providing a perfect match of all lines and design features. Indeed, the smooth, uninterrupted flow of all characteristic lines on the BMW 6 Series ensures harmonious interplay of the front section, the sides and rear sections of the car, the generous and powerfully curved surfaces all coming together to provide a harmonious picture to be admired in its sporting elegance and dynamic class from every angle and every perspective.

Offering this unique design language, the BMW 6 Series Coupé stands out as a modern and innovative interpretation of the classic Gran Turismo. And in the same way the BMW 6 Series Convertible, through its design, is a proud symbol of sporting and elegant driving pleasure with nothing but the sky above.

Powerful and full of presence from every perspective.

Detailed highlights and special features give the BMW 6 Series even greater presence in and through the elementary messages of the car’s design. Appropriate refinements offer an even clearer and more convincing expression of the car’s sculptural character both at the front, from the sides, and at the rear, focusing in particular on the sporting characteristics and strengths of the BMW 6 Series.

Both the Coupé and Convertible now have an even more powerful and striking stance on the road, the strong lines extending all the way from the A-pillars along the entire engine compartment lid to the BMW kidney grille and forming a dynamic arrow further emphasised by the powerfully chiselled bars in the lower air intake.

The air intake itself is even wider than on the former model and borders at the bottom on a contour edge significantly highlighting the wide track of the car. The newly designed direction indicators, in turn, featuring LED light units with a crystalline effect, provide an even more distinctive signal than before.

Through their striking contours, the headlights give the front end of the BMW 6 Series a clear, focused look, light technology adding further brilliance. Featured as standard, the bi-xenon dual round headlights are covered by a layer of clear glass at the surface, their corona rings now offering BMW’s typical daytime lights function.

With its long wheelbase, the long and sleek engine compartment lid, the greenhouse moved far to the back and the low roofline tapering out gently to the rear of the car, the BMW 6 Series has all the proportions of a classic coupé. And thanks to its unique Finn roof, the BMW 6 Series Convertible also offers the same, dynamically stretched silhouette.

The light edge on the side-sills is even more pronounced and distinctive than before on the BMW 6 Series, offering extra volume and contours to highlight the sporting character of the car. The metallic paint colours Deep Sea Blue and Space Grey, as well as three light-alloy rims, offer further options in rounding off the sporting elegance of the BMW 6 Series according to the customer’s individual preferences.

In the process of modifying the rear end of the car, BMW’s designers have harmoniously continued and enhanced the concept of ongoing lines extending around the entire vehicle. The section of the luggage compartment lid beneath the spoiler lip is even more concave in design than before, rising up less steeply to provide not only an even more dynamic look, but also even more distinctive light/shade contrasts, making the entire rear end of the car look even lower and more dynamic.

On both the Coupé and Convertible, the additional brake light is now integrated in the spoiler lip. The inner structure of the rear lights has also been modified to reflect the lines of the car, with all light sources now being LED units.

The harmony of lines on the luggage compartment lid, the rear lights and reflectors is likewise more intense and striking than before, the line formed by the lower edge of the rear spoiler sweeping gently downwards, where it is taken up by the outer contour of the rear lights. Then, following the design of the lights, the spoiler line, while still moving down, sweeps to the inside, where it is taken up by the contour of the low, even more stretched-out and sleeker reflectors.

BMW 6 Series all the way: harmony of design outside and inside.

The stylish and elegant dynamism of the car’s exterior design continues smoothly and harmoniously within the interior of the BMW 6 Series. Bearing a clear analogy to the exterior design of the car, the concept of dynamic harmony forms clear, flowing lines and tense, muscular surfaces.

As an example, the sweeping cover above the dashboard starting beneath the windscreen extends back on both sides in an ongoing, dynamic line leading into the door panels and surrounding the armrests. Both the driver and front passenger are therefore cocooned by tense, even exciting design elements continuing all the way to the centre console between the rear seats, thus emphasizing both the sophisticated style and elegance of the interior in a genuine visual and tangible experience.

The exclusivity of the BMW 6 Series is enhanced to an even higher standard by appropriate refinements in the quality of materials on specific controls and instruments finished in Chrome Pearl Grey Design as well as colours for the interior trim and upholstery. As an alternative to the “standard” version, optional interior trim strips made of grained maplewood, dark birchwood, or aluminium with a longitudinal grain pattern give the interior either an even more sophisticated, stylish and elegant, or a more technical and progressive touch.

Optional finish in Pearl exclusive leather, with additional leather on the armrests, the door grab handles and the centre console, is now also available in Chateau Red and in a upholstery colour, Saddle Brown.

Featuring a combination of leather and Pearl Grey chrome, the iDrive Controller matches the look of the rotary buttons, thus additionally enhancing the overall harmony of the car’s design.

Precise control of the system is further facilitated by a ring around the Controller made of extra-hard rubber, and to ensure even more intuitive use, the iDrive control system in the BMW 6 Series comes complete with eight programmable favourite buttons allowing direct access to selected functions.

The engines: even more dynamic, even more efficient – and for the first time also a diesel.

To show a clear sign of supremacy, a car – just like a human being – has to be a leader. And the BMW 6 Series expresses this leadership once again also in its engine technology, the progressive character of the car being borne out not least by the unique implementation of BMW EfficientDynamics also
    in this segment.

Forming an major highlight in BMW engine development, the technologies introduced in and through BMW EfficientDynamics to reduce both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are featured consistently also in the eight- and six-cylinder power units of the BMW 6 Series.

A particular highlight is the availability of a diesel engine for the first time in this segment, on both the Coupé and Convertible. Indeed, this is the world’s most powerful and dynamic three-litre straight-six diesel now offering its supreme power and efficiency in two particularly desirable cars. Displacing 3.0 litres, the power unit featuring an all-aluminium crankcase, Variable Twin Turbo (VTT) technology and third-generation common rail fuel injection develops maximum output in the BMW 635d Coupé and the BMW 635d Convertible of 210 kW/286 hp, plus maximum torque of 580 Newton-metres/427 lb-ft.

And through its low weight quite outstanding for a diesel of this calibre, the engine enhances both the efficiency and agility of the BMW 6 Series.

Referred to also as two-stage turbocharging, the VTT System is made up of two turbochargers varying in size. First, the small turbocharger cuts in at low engine speeds, developing superior power and torque spontaneously and without the slightest delay in response to even the smallest movement of the accelerator pedal thanks to its low level of inertia. Then, with engine speed increasing, the second, larger turbocharger also cuts in, giving the engine its maximum torque at just 1,750 rpm, with maximum engine power at 4,400 rpm.

The high-performance diesel clearly expresses its sporting character in accelerating to 100 km/h, an exercise completed by the BMW 635d Coupé in 6.3 and by the BMW 635d Convertible in 6.6 seconds. Top speed of both models, in turn, is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Returning average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 6.9 litres on the Coupé (equal to 40.9 mpg imp) and 7.2 litres on the Convertible (equal to 39.2 mpg imp), the BMW 635d sets the benchmark for efficiency in its segment. The increase in the car’s cruising range all the way to 1,015 kilometres or 629 miles on the Coupé and up to 970 kilometres or 601 miles on the Convertible clearly benefits the long-distance motoring qualities of the car as a traditional symbol of a genuine Gran Turismo.

Unparalleled supremacy: the eight-cylinder in the BMW 6 Series.

Offering the pinnacle of supreme power and performance, the BMW 6 Series again comes with an eight-cylinder right at the top of its range: Developing maximum output of 270 kW/367 hp at an engine speed of 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 490 Newton-metres/361 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm, the 4.8-litre in the BMW 650i Coupé and the BMW 650i Convertible ensures the highest standard of motoring in style.

This ultra-modern aluminium power unit comes complete with BMW’s throttle-free VALVETRONIC valve management, double-VANOS variable camshaft control on both the intake and exhaust side, as well an intake manifold switching to two different positions.

Benefiting from these highlights in technology, newly tuned engine management, and a wide range of high-tech features serving to reduce fuel consumption, the eight-cylinder offers not only supreme smoothness and refinement, an immediate response and a “beefy” torque curve, but also a high standard of economy with fuel-efficient lean-burn operation throughout a wide load range including higher engine speeds, thus ensuring a significant reduction of fuel consumption also in everyday traffic.

BMW 650i Coupé accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, and completing the same exercise in 5.5 seconds, the Convertible also offers the dynamic performance of a thoroughbred sports car. Electronic engine management limits the top speed of both models to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 11.7 litres/100 kilometres on the Coupé and 12.6 litres/100 km on the Convertible (equal to 24.1 and, respectively, 22.4 mpg imp). On the road, this means a reduction in fuel consumption versus the former models by up to 5 per cent, a clear sign of further progress in the spirit of BMW EfficientDynamics also in this performance class.

Innovative: straight-six power unit with High Precision Injection.

The 3.0-litre power unit with its composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase in the BMW 630i represents the latest state of the art in six-cylinder engine technology. The most important innovation in this context is BMW’s High Precision Injection, second-generation direct gasoline injection allowing fuel-efficient lean-burn operation throughout a wide load range including high engine speeds and therefore reducing fuel consumption significantly also in everyday traffic.

This progress is provided by innovative piezo-injectors arranged between the valves and injecting fuel directly to the area around the spark plug. Together with numerous other technologies serving to reduce fuel consumption, direct fuel injection in the lean-burn mode is part of BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW’s cutting-edge development strategy offering results and improvements now being implemented step-by-step in all of BMW’s model series.

Standing out as the currently most advanced six-cylinder, this superior power unit develops maximum output of 200 kW/272 hp in the BMW 630i Coupé and the BMW 630i Convertible, that is 10 kW/14hp more than in the former engine with conventional fuel supply and engine management. Maximum torque, in turn, is 320 Newton-metres or 236 lb-ft. On the road, this means acceleration to 100 km/h in the Coupé within 6.2 seconds, and acceleration to 100 km/h in the BMW 630i Convertible in 6.7 seconds. Again, top speed on both models is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Average fuel consumption of the BMW 630i in the EU test cycle is just 7.9 litres/100 kilometres on the Coupé and 8.3 litres/100 km on the Convertible, equal to 35.8 and, respectively, 34.0 mpg imp. This is an improvement of up to 15 per cent over the former models, which already boasted a very high standard of fuel efficiency.

Fuel economy and emissions optimised on all models.

A wide range of fuel-saving features in and around the engine also serve to make all of the power units in the BMW 6 Series even more efficient.

One example is Brake Energy Regeneration on all variants of the BMW 6 Series, an intelligent energy flow management concept concentrating the generation of electricity for the car’s on-board network on the overrun and brake phases. And to further promote an economic style of motoring, the manual gearbox versions of the BMW 6 Series also come with a gearshift point indicator.

Further technologies serving to save fuel provide their superior effect without any intervention by the driver. The belt drive for the a/c compressor, for example, comes with its own clutch automatically disconnecting the compressor as soon as the driver switches off the air conditioning. Cooling air flaps either opened or closed as a function of driving conditions serve likewise to optimise not only noise comfort, but also the car’s streamlining on both the BMW 635d Coupé and the BMW 635d Convertible.

Incorporating an electrical coolant pump, thermal management on the straight-six power unit in the BMW 630i, in turn, varies the car’s cooling efficiency as a function of actual requirements, regardless of engine speed. And last but certainly not least in this context, the Varioserv steering assistance pump featured on all variants of the BMW 6 Series ensures particularly efficient steering support and assistance according to the driver’s current requirements.

Automatic sports transmission with paddles on the
    steering wheel.

On the BMW 630i and the BMW 650i, engine power is delivered to the rear wheels as standard via a six-speed manual gearbox. An alternative also available to the discerning customer is the newly developed six-speed automatic sports transmission featured as standard on the BMW 635d and combining supreme comfort with unusually short reaction and gearshift times in true Gran Turismo style, direct connection to the engine also offering dynamic power and performance for sheer driving pleasure at all times.

The driver controls the automatic sports transmission by means of an electronic gear selector lever, moving the lever briefly to the left from position D in order to activate the manual gearshift mode. This allows the driver to shift gears either via the gear selector lever or manually in a sequential mode by means of paddles on the steering wheel. Yet a further option is to shift gears manually directly from the paddles, while pressing the Sports button positioned behind the gear selector lever, the driver is able to enjoy an even faster and dynamic gearshift. A further benefit is that the Sports button also modifies the progressive action of the gas pedal and, in conjunction with the car’s standard steering, the Servotronic control map, providing optimum conditions for dynamic acceleration.

Important innovations for even greater driving pleasure, safety and comfort.

Greater dynamism, enhanced safety, extra comfort – with its wide range of standard features and numerous other, optionally available high-tech improvements, the BMW 6 Series offers sheer driving pleasure of a truly incomparable, exclusive and fascinating kind. So like the BMW 7 Series, the BMW 6 Series is a particularly impressive demonstration of leadership in technology in terms of its comfort functions, chassis and driver assistance, both the Coupé and Convertible perfectly reflecting the innovative power of the BMW brand.

All-aluminium suspension for enhanced agility, safety and comfort.

Both the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the Convertible are characterised by fascinating, sporting and superior driving characteristics at all times and under all conditions. Featuring high-performance power units, rear-wheel drive, excellent axle load distribution, and an ultra-modern all-aluminium suspension, the BMW 6 Series offers a supreme driving experience under all conditions. The principle of lightweight construction on the chassis and suspension, in turn, guarantees supreme stability on low weight and minimises the car’s unsprung masses.

The high-performance swing-calliper brakes with inner-vented brake discs are controlled hydraulically on the BMW 6 Series, now acting even faster and more precisely than before in guaranteeing maximum stability and full brake power at all times.

A further important feature of the premium brake system on the BMW 6 Series is its low weight, the high-performance brakes on the BMW 650i being specially adapted to the supreme power of this outstanding eight-cylinder. And last but not least, all models in the BMW 6 Series come with a continuous brake pad wear indicator.

DSC Dynamic Stability Control with optimised control action.

Offering a wide range of functions, DSC Dynamic Stability Control supports the driver in the process of handling his BMW safely and with superior style. The first and foremost DSC function is to apply the brakes individually on the car’s various wheels as required, or to intervene in engine management in order to counteract any over- or understeer in bends.

DSC also comprises the ABS anti-lock brake control system as well as ASC Automatic Stability Control preventing the drive wheels from spinning on loose or slippery ground, a Brake Assistant, and CBC Cornering Brake Control to avoid under- or oversteer in bends.

Further functions are Fading Compensation whenever the brakes become particularly hot, regular Dry Braking to optimise the car’s stopping power in wet weather, and a Start-Off Assistant enabling the driver to set off smoothly and without the car rolling back on an uphill gradient, without having to use the handbrake.

The Brake Assistant in the new BMW 6 Series forming part of the DSC control system is networked with the car’s other driver assistance systems, interacting with Active Cruise Control with its Stop & Go function available as an option in order to detect the need for extra stopping power in good time. This is done by radar sensors incorporated in the system, with the brakes being pre-loaded by reducing the normal activation thresholds on the hydraulic Brake Assistant.

Yet a further innovation is the pre-loading brake function moving the brake pads closer to the discs for immediate build-up of brake pressure, thus avoiding the slightest delay in the process of applying the brakes. In the event of an emergency braking manoeuvre, this precaution enables the brakes to build up their maximum stopping power much faster than usual, making stopping distances a lot shorter and offering valuable safety reserves.

Activated at the touch of a button, DTC Dynamic Traction Control serves to move up the DSC response thresholds for even more dynamic performance. Specially optimised in the BMW 6 Series, this DTC mode enhances traction on slippery surfaces and ensures an even higher standard of sporting performance under dynamic driving conditions.

Safety built-in from the start: runflat tyres and tyre defect indicator.

Both the BMW 630i and the BMW 635d come as standard on 17-inch light-alloy rims. The BMW 650i, in turn, boasts 18-inch light-alloy rims as standard.

The tyres on all models feature the most advanced runflat technology enabling the driver to continue to the nearest workshop even after a complete loss of pressure. And as a further safety feature, the tyre defect indicator permanently supervises air pressure in the tyres and warns the driver as soon as tyre pressure drops more than 30 per cent below the ideal level by activating an optical signal in the instrument cluster.

Unique: Active Steering and Dynamic Drive.

Feature as standard on the BMW 6 Series, Servotronic power steering provides appropriate assistance on the hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering as a function of road speed. Further enhancement of steering comfort is provided by optionally available Active Steering absolutely unique in the BMW 6 Series segment, varying the steering transmission ratio appropriately to provide a larger steering angle at low speeds with the same movement of the steering wheel than at higher speeds. In practice, this allows the driver to manoeuvre his car with less effort and with an even smoother steering effect.

At higher speeds, on the other hand, Active Steering makes it easier for the driver to remain steadily on course, harmonising the feeling of the steering.

By way of yaw rate control, Active Steering stabilises the car in brake manoeuvres on varying surfaces (when applying the brakes with a modal split), counter-steering as required for superior safety and balance.

Yet another innovation ideally reflecting the character of the BMW 6 Series is optionally available Dynamic Drive. This suspension control system features active anti-roll bars with hydraulic swivel motors on the front and rear axle, enabling the car to almost completely set off roll movements in bends and in a sudden change of direction. A further benefit is appropriate control of the car’s steering behaviour in a lane change or in hard manoeuvres serving to avoid an obstacle on the road.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go.

Active Cruise Control with its Stop & Go function offers the driver better support and greater assistance at the wheel than ever before.

This innovative system now available as an option in the BMW 6 Series – on cars with automatic transmission – features automatic distance control allowing the driver to comfortably cruise along the motorway or on a country road, while constantly maintaining an appropriate distance to the vehicle ahead also in stop-and-go traffic at very low speeds.

As soon as the distance pre-set by the driver is no longer maintained, the system adjusts the speed of the car by intervening in drive management and building up brake pressure, thus taking current traffic conditions into account. Then, as soon as the road ahead is free again, Active Cruise Control increases the speed of the car to the limit set by the driver in advance.

The system even reduces the speed of the car to a standstill whenever necessary on account of current traffic conditions, bringing the car to a halt and holding it in that position.

The maximum deceleration generated by Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is 4 metres/sec². And should the driver be required to intervene because the driver ahead is applying the brakes extremely hard, he will be informed to do so by appropriate visual and acoustic signals.

Lane Departure Warning with vibration signal on the steering wheel.

To support driver awareness, both the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the BMW 6 Series Convertible come with a newly developed assistance system helping to prevent the driver from inadvertently departing from the right lane on the road. Referred to as Lane Departure Warning, this sophisticated system identifies departure of the car from the right track and gives the driver a discreet but noticeable signal at the most important point in steering the car – on the steering wheel itself.

The Lane Departure Warning System is made up of a camera fitted near the interior mirror on the windscreen, a control unit for comparing data, and a signal transmitter generating a vibration signal on the steering wheel.

Even better visibility thanks to variable light distribution.

Innovative driver assistance systems provide the opportunity to mastermind the bi-xenon headlights of the BMW 6 Series in a particularly intelligent fashion. The optionally available Adaptive Headlights, for example, guarantee appropriate illumination of the road ahead, following the road in bends and on winding passes.

A further improvement is variable light distribution introduced for the first time on the BMW 6 Series to optimise the headlight beam and illumination also on a straight stretch of road: Operating as a function of road speed, this innovative control system automatically enlarges the driver’s field of visibility by broadening the light beam, the “footprint” of light, as it were. In a typical city light situation at speeds below 50 km/h or 31 mph, this ensures broader distribution of light making it easier to recognise objects on the opposite, oncoming side of the road. In the motorway mode, on the other hand, the driver’s field of vision is extended by giving the light beam a longer range and again offering greater illumination on the left-hand side with oncoming traffic.

Activation of the foglamps at speeds of up to 70 km/h or 50 mph, in turn, generates broader light distribution and brightens up the area close to the car. And at higher speeds, finally, the headlight range is also extended over and above the broader distribution of light.

Automatic headlight control featured as standard activates the low-beam headlights without requiring any intervention by the driver whenever this is necessary – for example when driving through a tunnel or with conditions becoming darker at dusk. The rain sensor also featured as standard is an ideal supplement to the headlight control function, conducting optical measurements to automatically determine the onset and degree of precipitation, and thus activating the windscreen wipers accordingly.

The BMW 6 Series is the only car in its segment available with a High Beam Assistant. This intelligent unit switches off the high beam automatically as soon as the car encounters oncoming traffic or another vehicle ahead comes into sight or if the road ahead – for example in town or a built-up area – is adequately illuminated.

BMW Night Vision available as an option offers an even higher standard of safety when driving at night. The “heart” of this unique system is a thermal imaging camera able to detect people, animals and objects emitting heat at a distance of up to 300 metres or almost 1,000 feet also next to the road, then transmitting a high-contrast image to the central Control Display also used by the navigation system.

As an option both the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the BMW 6 Series Convertible are available with a Head-Up Display projecting information relevant to the driver such as the road speed of the car or navigation data to the windscreen directly in front of the driver.

Comfort and safety on all four seats.

High-strength load-bearing structures, generous and clearly defined deformation zones front and rear, side impact protection integrated in the doors and rear side panels, and an extremely stiff passenger cell allowing the entire structure around the driver to maintain its function as a survival area also in a severe collision – all these features provide the prerequisites for the exemplary standard of passive safety offered by the BMW 6 Series.

Other standard features are three-point belt inertia-reel seat belts on all seats as well as frontal and side airbags. The BMW 6 Series Coupé also comes with head airbags, while the BMW 6 Series Convertible features rollbars moving up automatically in the event of a possible rollover within fractions of a second from a module behind the rear headrests.

Active headrests for an even higher standard of occupant protection.

Both the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the BMW 6 Series Convertible come as standard with electrically adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger as well as a triple memory function on the driver’s seat. The front seats on the BMW 6 Series Convertible feature an integrated belt system, while on the BMW 6 Series Coupé the belt anchor points allow comfortable and convenient use of the car’s restraint systems.

Newly developed active headrests on the front seats once again enhance the standard of passive safety in both models, the headrests developing their protective effect in the event of a rear-end collision by automatically moving closer to the occupant’s head, thus preventing any rapid spinning or turning motion of the head, in the process significantly reducing the risk of upper spinal injury for the driver and front passenger.

To ensure this effect, the headrests are moved forward by 60 millimetres or 2.36´´ and upward by 40 millimetres or 1.57´´ as soon as the airbag control unit registers an impact at the rear of the BMW 6 Series and sends out a signal for pyrotechnical activation of the system. This, in turn, releases two springs moving the upholstered sections of the headrests into position to immediately cushion the heads of the occupants, preventing any spinning or jerking movement resulting from impact energy.

    Top-end navigation and audio systems.

As a particular highlight in the interest of motoring comfort, both the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the BMW 6 Series Convertible are available as an option with the BMW Professional navigation system now optimised to an even higher level. Among other features, the BMW Professional navigation system features refined graphic presentation on an 8.8-inch Control Display as well as new, particularly reliable voice entry exclusive to BMW cars.

High-quality audio systems and telematics functions serve to enhance touring comfort and driving pleasure in the BMW 6 Series to an even higher standard. Particularly the newly developed BMW Individual High-End Audio System guarantees exceptional quality of sound ensured above all by the “heart” of the system, trendsetting Dirac Live signal processing. The digital nine-channel amplifier with DSP Digital Signal Processing develops
maximum output of 825 watt and, together with the particularly sophisticated loudspeakers, sets a benchmark in the quality and reproduction of sound.

Over and above the AUX-IN bush featured as standard, a USB interface is also available as an option for linking up external audio sources. This allows the user to integrate MP3 players such as an Apple iPod into the audio system and to control the various functions by means of the iDrive Controller or, respectively, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel.

The range of multi-media features and options is rounded off by the mobile BMW Online internet portal and BMW Assist telematics services. The BMW Online news menu comprises not only the latest reports provided directly by the German Press Agency (dpa), but also weather reports and forecasts tailored to the driver’s personal needs.

The BMW Convertible Weather Service, for example, tells the driver whether he can expect to drive his BMW 6 Series Convertible with the roof down on the next day or whether to expect precipitation at his current location. And last but not least, the BMW 6 Series is also available with BMW TeleServices through which the BMW Group offers its customers a universal range of service features serving for example, to make appointments and set the appropriate time for a meeting.

Leather upholstery with SunReflective Technology on the Convertible.

One of the particular highlights offered by the BMW 6 Series Convertible is the use of a newly developed type of leather for the seat upholstery and interior panels. In this case so-called “cool pigments” are integrated into the material in a process referred to as SunReflective Technology, reflecting infra-red radiation in the sunlight. This very effectively reduces any undue overheating of the seat surfaces when the car is open, providing a difference in temperatures compared with conventional leather of up to 20 °C or 68 °F in the case of dark colours.

Together with the characteristic design of both models and their impressive standard of driving dynamics, the comprehensive range of multi-faceted features helps to give the BMW 6 Series its truly authentic and unique identity. Indeed, the BMW 6 Series Coupé and the BMW 6 Series Convertible belong to the small and highly exclusive group of cars fulfilling the greatest demands in every respect and setting benchmarks everywhere. Given the sheer magnitude of their qualities, both models stand out clearly in their respective segments, reflecting the ideals of the discerning motorist dedicated either to the refined dynamics of a four-seater Gran Turismo coupé or the exclusive driving pleasure only a luxury convertible likewise conceived for four occupants is able to offer.

Through its convincing representation of the latest values including not only uncompromising quality, unpretentious elegance, superior everyday reliability and now also the superior economy of the BMW 635d, the BMW 6 Series is a highly attractive proposition also to the connoisseur outside of the car’s classic target group. So the positive impression the BMW 6 Series leaves behind on the road gives the driver even greater pleasure in identifying with his car.

The outstanding success of the BMW 6 Series so far clearly proves
how the car reaches the objectives set not only by BMW, but also by the most demanding customers, of a luxury performance coupé and convertible:

By the end of February 2007 no less than 75, 352 units of the BMW 6 Series had come off the assembly line, to be precise 41, 446 Coupés and 33, 906 Convertibles. So within just three years, the BMW 6 Series already accounts for more than 85 per cent of its predecessor’s sales volume throughout its entire lifecycle. And now, with both models boasting an even more distinctive profile, everything is in place for continuing the great success of the BMW 6 Series.

  • Seat Altea Freetreack

Seat Altea FreetreackAt the upcoming Barcelona Motor Show from 7 to 17 June, SEAT will be presenting its first all-road vehicle – the Altea freetrack. After unveiling the prototype version in Geneva, which hinted at the new model’s silhouette, the definitive version can be seen in Barcelona and goes on sale this summer.
