  • Citroen C4 Cactus AIRFLOW 2L Concept to Debut in Paris

Citroen C4 Cactus AIRFLOW 2L Concept is going to be officially premiered at the Paris Motor Show this October, showing its environmental credentials and great fuel economic pressures. The vehicle is packed with advanced technologies that offer innovative responses to the automotive challenges of the present and those of the future. This Citroen delivers breakthrough fuel consumption of 2l/100 km (over 141mpg)!

This is due to the fact that it has optimised design with a 20% improvement in aerodynamics, it runs on lower rolling resistance “tall & narrow” tyres, it is built with lighter parts that reduce overall vehicle weight by 100kg and at last but not least – it features the Hybrid Air technology, which cuts fuel consumption by 30%.

This C4 Cactus features a body optimized for aerodynamic performance. This means that some styling features have been modified and others created in order to optimise vehicle aerodynamics. For instance, the new front bumper includes three air intakes that continuously adjust in accordance with vehicle use, both for engine cooling and to regulate air flow. There are mobile side deflectors added to effectively guide the air flow around the vehicle. The wheels feature mobile shutters activated and controlled by centrifugal force.

The fixed-geometry components include: new generation 19-inch “ultra ultra” low rolling resistance “tall & narrow” tyres, wheel arches with “Air Curtain”, lengthened spoiler smaller and slimmer rearview cameras instead of rearview mirrors and LED light modules at the front and rear instead of the existing lights. The colour orange identifies all the aerodynamic features and underlines the high-tech character of the C4 Cactus AIRFLOW 2L concept.

In terms of weight, this concept is 100 kg lighter than the production C4 Cactus. To achieve this, Citroen has reduced the weight of many structural components, with the body sub-structure featuring new materials such as aluminium, for the upper cowl panel, inner side members and rear floor pan, high-yield steels, for the front side rails and heel board and composite materials for the front of the vehicle floor.

Furthermore, in this project the French company utilizes the Hybrid Air technology for breakthrough fuel consumption, which combines a range of proven sub-systems and technologies. Precisely, this includes a 3-cylinder PureTech petrol engine, a compressed air energy storage unit, a hydraulic pump/motor unit and an automatic transmission with an epicyclic gear train.

In addition, the intelligent electronic management system manages input from the driver to optimise energy efficiency. There are three operating modes are available: zero emissions Air power mode, where the compressed air motor takes over from the petrol engine; Petrol power, using only the combustion engine; and Combined power, drawing upon both the combustion engine and the compressed air.

The combination of PureTech 82 engine and Hybrid Air technology minimizes fuel consumption by 30%. In addition, it also contributes to achieving a vehicle capable of 2l/100 km, while approaching the PureTech 110 in terms of dynamic performance.

Citroen C4 Cactus AIRFLOW 2L Concept Technical Characteristics:

    • Unladen weight: 865kg
    • Length: 4,156mm
    • Width: 1,729mm
    • Height: 1,487mm (to be confirmed)
    • CdA: improvement around 20%
    • Hybrid Air drivetrain mated to the PureTech 82 S&S engine
    • Tyres: Michelin 155/70/R19

  • Citroen Roll Out The C4 Cactus

Citroen-C4-Cactus-shadowCitroen-C4-Cactus-mediumThis is the completely real (as in “production”) Citroen C4 Cactus here to rock your world.  Now, we know you might be thinking, “Production you say? Then what are those designy thingies on it?”

Ah, you see, that’s the Cactus’ thermoplastic polyurethane shell (TPU). Well, here’s a more rustic name for it: Airbump® – it’s supposed to do away with dents and scratches in real life. Found on the front and rear bumpers and the sides, the Airbump® provides a type of buffer zone which protects the actual body. We guess “bubble wrap” was already taken, huh?

So we have cushions on the outside, a mind-bending array of driving aids – park assist, a reversing camera, hill-start assist, to name a few – have they lost all confidence in the human proneness to accidents…oh.

Yes, “clever” is the word of the day. The C4 is sleek and slippery, it’s spacious, comfortable and very high-tech….for a cactus. Who needs dials and needles nowadays when there’s an app for that? A 7-inch touchscreen conjures up any cluster you might fancy – from the air conditioning controls to the yellow pages index. Face it, we’ve all felt the need to order Chinese whilst behind the wheel. Feel free to order as much as you want too. See, despite being arguably small (4.16 m long; 1.73 m wide) the Cactus is till a C-class vehicle. Ergo, you still get a 358 liter boot. A UV-protective panoramic roof amplifies the sense of space even more.

If you go for the optional Efficient Tronic Gearbox (ETG) you also lose the stick. Instead, there’s this selection system that Citroen is trying to push on us called the Easy Push. Yeah, we made the lamest pun ever.

And no, the Cactus doesn’t have an iPhone for an engine, but there is no fusion reactor to be found either? More like a 110bhp turbo three-cylinder petrol at best. But that’s ok because the whole thing weighs no more than a 1000 kg thanks to a heavy aluminum diet. It shouldn’t be too sluggish is what we mean. And with the Stop/Start system as standard, the Cacti (plural) fuel economy and emission values are rated at around 91.1 mpg and less than 100 g/km of CO2 – cleanliness truly is next to godliness.

  • 2014 Citroen C4 Picasso Technospace Revealed

Citroen-C4-Picasso-Technospace-THUMBCitroen has just released the first images and information around their new 2014 Citroen C4 Picasso Technospace. The model will have a launch this summer and of course will be the excellent expression of company’s “Creative Technologie” moto.

The C4 Picasso benefits from the new EMP2 platform. It has reduced overhang (-70mm at the front); a lower engine block (-40mm to -50mm) and floor (-20mm) and wider tracks (+82mm at front and +31mm at the rear).

The assertive front end includes new look chevrons which extend out to spectacular hi-tech lights. Slim LED daytime-running lights, positioned just above the headlamps, flank the radiator grille, while the fog lamps complete the very original light signature.

At the rear, there are also LED lights mounted and they create modern 3D effect. In addition, the model will be available in a range of eight colours from Shark Grey, Aluminium, Hickory Brown and Obsidien Black to radiant Ruby Red, Teles Blue and Kyanos Blue. It will run on a range of alloy wheel designs in a choice of three sizes – 16”, 17” and 18”.

The interior of the 2014 C4 Picasso include some special features such as panoramic windscreen and large glass roof. The contemporary design is also evident in the quality of the materials and attention to detail. Some of the highlights in the interior are varnish on the paintwork, soft paint application technology, chrome technologies, full-grain leather for greater strength.

The dashboard is designed asymmetrically and combines several complementary colours and materials. The seats are designed elegantly thanks to the light-coloured Nappa leather which also delivers a sense of comfort.

2014 Citroen C4 Picasso is 140kg lighter than its predecessor thanks to the already mentioned EMP2 platform. The latter utilizes aluminium, and when it is combined with very high yield strength steel and a composite rear floor the result is a decrease of 70 kg. The body style cuts a further 70 kg through enhanced exterior dimensions and new materials such as an aluminium bonnet and composite tailgate.

A logical consequence is the enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions. In addition, C4 Picasso is the first compact MPV with an internal combustion engine which delivers sub-100g/km CO2 emissions.

For instance, the e-HDi 90 Airdream engine matched with the six-speed clutchless gearbox emits just 98g/km and has a fuel economy of 74 mpg. Stop & Start technology is fitted on all diesel units with the exception of the HDi 90 manual.

On the other hand, the popular e-HDi 115 engine emits just 104g/km CO2 with the 6-speed clutchless gearbox, 105g/km with the manual and delivers 70mpg. What is more, the Picasso will be brand’s first model available with a BlueHDi engine.

BlueHDi 150 emits just 110g/km of CO2 and features an SCR module (selective catalytic reduction), currently the most efficient technology for treating NOx (- 90%) and cutting CO₂ emissions in all situations.

In terms of safety, the model is equipped with full range of technologies, which deliver a safe and reassuring driving experience. Some of them are: active cruise controlwith a radar sensor in the front bumper, active driver and passenger front seatbelts, LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System), an image processing function for the miniature camera built into the rear view mirror, an ultrasonic blind spot monitoring system with an orange light in the door mirror, and Citroen eTouch.

  • 2012 Citroen C4 AIRCROSS SUV

2012 Citroen C4 Aircross ThumbCitroën is expanding its range with a new vehicle named 2012 Citroën C4 AIRCROSS, which is a fresh take on conventional compact SUV design. The new Citroën C4 AIRCROSS will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year. The new vehicle speaks loudly about its new styling – the Citroën C4 AIRCROSS combines the elegance of brand saloons with the more muscular lines of an off-roader. When one looks it from the front, one sees the wide chrome grille displaying the chevron badge, giving the vehicle a strong identity. Viewed from the side one sees a chrome compass, identifying this car as a member of the Marque’s SUV family. This SUV sits on wide 18-inch alloy wheels and has rear lights, inspired by the Citroën C4 hatchback and Hypnos concept car. This was made in order to optimize air flow and cut CO2 emissions. Of course, the designers of Citroen have put a lot of attention on the details, thus making it delivering even more style and efficiency. At the front, for example, the daytime running LED lights are integrated vertically into the aerodynamic vents. In addition, the door mirrors have built-in indicator repeater lights, while the rear light clusters feature light guides. Another interesting instance is that a rearview camera is concealed in the chrome trim of the tailgate.

The 2012 Citroën C4 AIRCROSS has a brand new new-generation four-wheel drive transmission, which will make the drive even more enjoyable. This is an innovational technology, which takes in account the driver input, road conditions and vehicle speed, and thus distributing torque optimally between the front and rear wheels at all times. This system also minimizes fuel consumption by using low-viscosity oil in the transfer box. Depending on the driving conditions, customers can select one of three possible transmission modes using a control behind the gear lever: a 4-wheel drive (4WD) mode, which automatically distributes torque between the front and rear axles; a “Lock” mode, which maximizes traction in extreme conditions, increasing the torque transmitted to the rear wheels by 50% compared with 4WD mode; and a 2-wheel drive (2WD) mode, which minimizes fuel consumption by reducing the number of moving parts (only the front axle is engaged).

The new Citroën C4 AIRCROSS ranks among the best in its segment for low CO2 emissions. We are speaking here about the model with HDi 115 engine, which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. In a 2-wheel drive version it emits just 119 g of CO2/km and in 4 wheel drive version emitting just 129 g of CO2/km. This 1.6 litre engine delivers 115 hp (85 kW) for maximum torque of 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) from 1,750 rpm, and up to 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) with the temporary overboost function. There is also a 1.8 litre engine included in the lineup, which is the only diesel on the market to feature variable valve timing, which gives it a lower compression ratio (14:1) than any other diesel engine. The 1.6 litre engine features a double overhead camshaft, 16 valves and variable valve timing. It combines high standards of performance with low emissions, developing 115 hp (85 kW) for CO2 emissions of just 135 g/km.

    2012 Citroen C4 Aircross
    2012 Citroen C4 Aircross

There is also a 150 hp (110 kW) 2.0i petrol engine included in the lineup. It has a five-speed manual gearbox or continuously variable transmission (CVT). It also includes 16 valves, an aluminium cylinder block and variable valve timing. All these engines feature technologies designed to cut CO2 emissions: Stop&Start technology; an electronically controlled alternator that recovers energy during braking and deceleration; electric power steering that consumes energy only when the steering wheel is turning.

The new Citroen model offers compact dimensions. It is 4.34 m long, 1.80 m wide, 1.63 m tall. Moreover the Citroën C4 AIRCROSS is surprisingly spacious, with a cabin worthy of the next class up. With five seats and a boot volume of 442 litres, it is very convenient for everyday use. Furthermore, to enhance the joy from driving, the Citroën C4 AIRCROSS is fitted with MacPherson type front suspension and a multi-link set-up at the rear. It also offers an great safety level by combining driving aids such as ESP with skid control ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, hill-start assist.

What about the new design of the exterior? First of all the new 2012 Citroën C4 AIRCROSS features a large glazed panoramic sunroof with UV protection and a one-touch electric blind. It also has LED light guides built into the roof turn it amber. The steering wheel is leather-covered and adjustable for height and reach, with controls for the audio system, cruise control and hands-free kit. The front seats provide excellent support and multi-way adjustment. They are available in two versions: electric and heated. The driving comfort is further improved by the automatic headlights, automatic wipers and an electrochrome interior door mirror. The cabin includes a host of storage compartments and the large glovebox is lit and chilled. The front and rear central armrests feature two ergonomic beaker-holders and a compartment equipped with a 12V socket, a USB port and auxiliary audio jack.

The Citroën C4 AIRCROSS is all about technological innovation, and includes a top-level hi-fi system worthy of a saloon. It delivers total power of 710 watts and comprises of eight loudspeakers placed around the cabin, a 25-centimetre woofer with a dual voicecoil, and a20-litre cabinet installed on the left-hand side of the boot. There is also included a high-performance GPS navigation system with a 7-inch touch screen. For even more safety the navigation system is associated with a color rearview camera and rear parking sensors. The all-new Citroën C4 AIRCROSS also includes a Bluetooth hands-free telephone function.
