    2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Born in Flacht with the genes of a race car, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS shares naturally aspirated heart with the 911 GT3 making the most thrilling and focused 718 yet.

The naturally aspirated flat-six engine used in the 911 GT3 Cup car and the road-going 911 GT3 represents the heart of this uncompromising driver’s car. The engine revs up to 9,000 rpm. Power increases by 79 hp compared to the 718 Cayman GT4 to a total of 493 hp, resulting in a weight-to-power ratio of 6.55 lbs. per hp. Maximum torque increases from 317 lb.-ft. to 331 lb.-ft.

Accompanying the new engine and significantly enhanced performance are many changes to the appearance of the car, driven by functional demands. Among the many design changes applied to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS are the air intakes behind the side windows on the driver and passenger side where other 718 Cayman models would usually have a small window. The new RS-specific air intakes improve the flow of intake air, which can be clearly heard due to the proximity to the driver’s and passenger’s ears. Side intakes in the rear quarter panels – a long-running design feature of all Cayman models – are still present albeit revised to meet the greater cooling demands of the new engine.

Like every modern RS variant, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS will be offered exclusively with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK): It changes gears with lightning-quick speeds and contributes to the high degree of performance that the car offers. Using shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel, drivers can change gears manually as they choose without taking their hands off the wheel. Alternatively, they can also change gears manually using the newly designed shift lever in the center console.

The Sport-PDK features shorter gearing than what is found in a PDK-equipped 718 Cayman GT4, and contributes to the impressive acceleration. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds – half a second quicker than the 414 hp 718 Cayman GT4 with PDK. Top track speed is 196 mph (GT4 with PDK: 187 mph), which the GT4 RS reaches in seventh gear.

In common with its RS model predecessors, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS was constructed with a focus on lightweight materials. The U.S. curb weight is 3,227 lbs. – 49 lbs. less than a 718 Cayman GT4 with PDK. For example the front fenders and hood are formed out of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The rear window is made of lightweight glass. Lightweight door panels with fabric door opening loops and storage nets round off the focus on lowering weight.

The new, fixed rear wing with a swan neck mounts and aluminum supports represents a marked difference to other 718 models, including the GT4. This particularly efficient wing designed was adopted from the Porsche 911 RSR race car and was first used on a Porsche road car on the 2022 911 GT3. Combined with a ride height that is 30 millimeters lower than a standard Cayman, front wheel well ventilation, an aerodynamically optimized underbody with a rear diffusor, an adjustable front diffusor and a new front spoiler lip with flow-around side-blades, the GT4 RS generates up to 25 percent more downforce in the racetrack-only Performance mode than the 718 Cayman GT4.

Enhancements to the suspension also contribute to the even higher level of performance. Ball joints connect the suspension to the body and contribute to an even higher level of precision and responsiveness. The adjustable and track-focused suspension received an RS-specific damper setup as well as revised spring and anti-roll bar rates. Additionally, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with center locks are used for the first time on a 718 Cayman model.

The optional Weissach Package enhances the performance-focused appearance of the GT4 RS even further. When this option is selected, the front luggage compartment lid, process air intakes, cooling air intakes, air box lid, exterior mirrors caps and the rear wing are made of carbon fiber. Exhaust tips made of titanium are inspired by the exhaust of the Porsche 935/19. The upper part of the dashboard is upholstered in Race-Tex with this option, while the rear window features a large Porsche logo type. Magnesium wheels are available as an addition to the Weissach Package for an additional cost.

The sum of these enhancements compared to the 718 Cayman GT4 make the GT4 RS the most uncompromised and exciting member of the 718 family. Its performance on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife underscore this particularly well. During final testing and evaluation drives, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister completed a lap of the 20.832 kilometer (12.944 mile) track in 7:09.300 minutes. On the shorter track variant, which was formerly used as a benchmark (20.6 km in length), the GT4 RS set a time of 7:04.511 minutes – 23.6 seconds quicker than the 718 Cayman GT4.

To celebrate this impressive car, Porsche Design has created a Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS, which will be offered exclusively to buyers of the vehicle. Like the car itself, the timepiece features a lightweight concept with a performance focused character by using high-tech titanium materials. The winding rotor design takes on visual cues from the wheels of the car and is available in different colors to match the vehicle.

The new 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is celebrating its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show and has an MSRP of $141,700, not including a $1,350 delivery, processing and handling fee. It is expected to reach U.S. dealers in the course of summer 2022. The racing version 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport is also being debuted in L.A., which will be competing in many national and international racing series next year.

    2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport

Porsche has revealed the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The mid-engine race car from Weissach is based on the new, and recently revealed, 718 Cayman GT4 RS road car.

As with its road-going sibling, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport is equipped with a mighty 4.0 liter six-cylinder boxer engine. This high-revving power plant is taken directly from the 911 GT3 Cup race car and develops 500 hp in the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport – 75 hp more than the previous GT4 Clubsport model.

Fitted as standard is a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK), replacing the GT4 Clubsport’s six-speed version. All gears feature shorter ratios than on the GT4 Clubsport.

The homologated 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport is track-ready from the factory and can be used in SRO racing series around the world without further modifications. The starting price of the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, which will be sold and distributed through Porsche Motorsport North America in the U.S., is $229,000, not including tax.

“We thrive on competition, and will always push for improvements,” said Volker Holzmeyer, President and CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America. “This is what our customer teams expect of us and what we demand of ourselves at Porsche. Acting on their feedback, we’ve made the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport more capable than ever. It’s quicker, even more rewarding and confidence inspiring to drive – exactly what drivers competing in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and SRO series need to be successful.“

Porsche began offering the Cayman GT4 Clubsport of the 981 generation in 2016, entering into this new customer racing format early with a competitive car, and 421 units were built up to 2018. In 2019, the next generation model debuted based on the 718 Cayman GT4. It was also a success: Around 500 units have been produced to date. The strong demand for these vehicles is also due to the low running costs. The use of proven series production technology combined with racing-specific components reduces the cost for customer teams.

“The GT4 Clubsport has a special place in my heart,” adds Holzmeyer. “As I’ve been deeply involved with the car from the start, ever since it first began development. Therefore, it’s also a personal ambition for me to continuously improve it, to make it better and better.”

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport in detail

The 500 hp 4.0 liter six-cylinder boxer engine is taken directly from the current 911 GT3 Cup racing car and is 18 percent more powerful than the 3.8 liter engine used in the previous model – the 718 GT4 Clubsport. Thanks to an optimized air intake, maximum power is achieved at 8,300 rpm – 800 rpm higher than previously. The new engine can rev up to 9,000 rpm and develops 343 lb.-ft. at 6,000 rpm, while the previous engine generated 313 lb.-ft. at 6,600 rpm. The result is a much wider, more usable power band of the new engine, improving the drivability of the car for pro-racers as well as amateur drivers alike.

The suspension of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport was also extensively enhanced. The damper technology was revised from the ground up to offer an optimized responsiveness and a further improvement in body control, making a significant impact on track performance and handling. Two-way racing adjustable shock absorbers with further improved valve characteristics as well as adjustable double-blade anti-roll bars, front and rear, are among the updates. Ride height, camber and toe are also adjustable. Additionally, three different spring rates for front and rear axle are available. Special NACA ducts in the front lid feed air efficiently to the large race braking system with 380 mm multi-piece rotors that are vented and slotted. The Porsche Stability Management-System (PSM) is programmed specifically for the track and includes a switch for traction control, ABS and an updated stability control programming.

The aerodynamics of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport have also been enhanced in great detail. Front dive planes as well as an enlarged front spoiler lip increase downforce at the front axle. Fender vents inspired by the 911 GT3 R and special air curtains calm the air flow around the front wheels, while the enclosed underbody optimizes air flow to the diffusor at the rear of the car. The swan neck rear wing has been fitted with a 20 millimeter long Gurney flap and gains two further stages of adjustability.

The previous 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport was the first series production race car to use body panels made of sustainable natural fiber composites. This material is being used even more extensively on the new GT4 RS Clubsport. In addition to the doors and the rear wing, the front lid, fenders, aerodynamic components at the front and the steering wheel consist of this material. The use of this flax-based fiber as an alternative to carbon-fiber composite can be tested in racing for a potential future use in road cars. Porsche has been using motorsport as a test bed for technology, processes and materials potentially capable of being used in road cars for more than 70 years.

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport is equipped to compete straight out of the box. This begins with the welded-in roll cage, as well as the longitudinally-adjustable Recaro racing seat, and extends to six-point harnesses with 2023 FIA standard, all the way to the fire extinguisher system and built-in air jack system with three jacks. The new foam on the driver’s side meets the international requirements of the SRO racing series. The FT3 fuel cell can accommodate up to 115 liters (30.4 gallons) of fuel, making it suitable for endurance racing. Additionally, Porsche offers two different exhaust systems, allowing the GT4 RS Clubsport to compete at tracks with stricter noise limits. Special Fitment preparations for homologated additional headlights or openings in the front lid for quick refueling allow a quick conversion to suit nighttime endurance racing.

  • Porsche Boxster and Cayman with new Engines In 2016

For those who are missing an update in Porsche’s Boxster and Cayman GTS, we have good news … or not that good, actually. The models were introduced last year in March and since then there was nothing significant going on around them. We got here and there some exclusive tunings, but it is not like the officially released statement that both cars will be getting four-cylinder turbo engines.

Back in March we understood that the (current for now) Boxster and Cayman GTS range is powered by a 3.4 liter flat-six engine, which generates no less than 330hp (243 kW) for the Boxster and 340 (250 kW) for the Cayman. The torque is 370Nm (273 lb-ft) and 380Nm (280 lb-ft), respectively. In addition, both cars got the Chrono package as a standard.

SEE ALSO: Porsche Cayman GT4: Designed to Impress

With these numbers the Boxster is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, while the Cayman is a little bit faster: it covers the sprint in 4.6 seconds. Top speeds are of 281 km/h (175 mph) and 285 km/h (177 mph), respectively.

So, what’s the problem here? Obviously, Porsche is considering these numbers too much. Given that there are new EU emission standards, Porsche’s CEO, Matthias Müller, said that from the beginning of 2016 the cars will be available with turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engines.

The possible and rumored displacements are to be 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre. But, there is no need to cry, because the flat-six will be still available for enthusiasts.

  • Porsche Announces Mysterious Geneva Premiere

Next to Cayman GT4 Porsche will premiere a mysterious performance-bounded car.Porsche will make a double world premiere in Geneva next week. We have seen the first car that is going to be officially presented and it is the Cayman GT4. The second model however is covered in mystery, since there is no word or even a teaser about it. The only thing that the company said is that it will be “another exceptional Porsche” that is destined to bring new standard in terms of performance.

And does this mean that actually the company is enjoying making high-performance vehicles suitable for everyday driving? Inarguably yes! In addition these two debuts speak of something like tradition which Porsche has established. We talk about the fact that it always introduces motorsport-bounded vehicles in Geneva.

Take for instance the 911 GT3 and 919 Hybrid. We have witnessed their birth in the Swiss city in the previous years. Now it is time for the Cayman GT4 to do the same. In fact this is the first high-performance sports car from the GT family based on the mid-engine coupes.

The model already made an impressive Nürburgring track debut by achieving a lap time of 7 minutes and 40 seconds on the North Loop. The main responsibility for this should be attributed to the 3.8-liter engine that has the capability of 385 hp (283 kW) and is a derivative of 911 Carrera S’ unit.

In addition, what differentiates the new Cayman from the others in its family are the new front featuring lowered front spoiler, the additional hood air outlet and the rear wing. These elements all contribute towards better downforce at both axles.

Still, our mind is taken by the thoughts of this mysterious model and we can’t wait to know more about it. Do you have any suggestions?

  • Techart Porsche Cayman Shows-Off with new Rear Spoiler II

2014-Techart-Porsche-Cayman-THUMBTechart Porsche Cayman now can be proud of its most distinctive part: Techart’s Rear Spoiler II, which is part of the Aerodynamic Program of the tuning company for the current Cayman models. The rear spoiler emphasizes the flat outline and short overhangs of the mid-engine sports car. At the same time it takes the aesthetic and technical requirements into account equally, making the car look more spectacular than ever.

The new addition to the aerodynamic kit determines Porsche Cayman models visually and in addition, it delivers dynamics and strength to the mid-engine sports car’s flat outline. To be more precise, the characteristic wing profile as well as the base console underneath with functional spoiler lip is made of high-quality PU-RIM material.

In addition, filigree aluminium uprights with Techart logotype is what allows the driver to adapt the wing profile’s angle manually. This means that the effective aerodynamic surface can be adjusted regarding the driving conditions, or just by the individual preferences of the driver. When combined with tuning company’s Front Spoiler I, the Rear Spoiler II generates ideal handling behaviour.

The latest addition in the Cayma range was the GTS specificatioin. It is powered by a 3.4 liter flat-six engine, delivering 340 horsepower (250 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. The Cayman GTS needs just 4.6 seconds to cover the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h on its way to a top speed of 285 km/h (177 mph).
