He sys that it is a tremendous honor to drive the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500, and adds that he will appreciate every minute of getting to pace the field in the new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.

The Pace Car is based on the brand new 2014 Camaro Z/28, which is the most track-capable model in its history. The car was built on the legacy of the original SCCA Trans Am-series contender, which was originally introduced in 1967.

The design of the Z/28 focuses mainly on track capability, thus sporting unique exterior elements. In addition, it is designed just like a race car in order to generate downforce that delivers greater grip – up to 1.08 g in cornering acceleration – and faster lap times.

And to harmonize perfectly with the great power of the car, Chevrolet designers gave it greater stopping power. The Z/28 is equipped with Brembo carbon ceramic brakes capable of 1.5 g in deceleration, and also has reduced curb weight. In fact, this Camaro weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged Camaro ZL1.

The model as well as the Pace Car, is driven by the 7.0L LS7 engine, which is rated at 505 horsepower (376 kW) and 652 Nm (481 lb-ft) of maximum torque. In fact, the powertrain is hand-built and is coupled with a six-speed manual transmission.

  • 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 – Grip Problem

A very strange problem occurred with the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. As we well know, the performance car is extremely fast, so fast even that it provides more traction than the wheels can handle.

The engineers noticed that the wheels rotate inside the tire, which kind of unexpected challenge that requires fast thinking. Obviously the main reason are brakes, which provide excessive stopping power.

“We were told to build a fast car – period,” commented Mark Stielow, Camaro Z/28 program manager and pro-touring expert.

“We knew on Day One we’d need to bring some of the best suppliers onboard to make it happen.”, he added.

Some of the suppliers included Pirelli and its P Zero™ Trofeo R tires and Brembo for carbon-ceramic brake rotors. The Trofeo R tires have a track-oriented tread design and compound that, together with the carbon-ceramic rotors, help the Z28 achieve up to 1.5 g in deceleration force.

It was a perfect combination, but engineers quickly found that when the Z28’s capability was tested, the wheels were rotating – slipping – inside the tires. They sought the root of the problem by marking one of the Pirelli P Zero™ Trofeo R tires at the beginning of a lap with a chalk line relative to the valve stem on the wheel. At the end of the lap, they recorded where the chalk line ended up and noticed the tire had rotated at least a full 360 degrees from where they started.

The solution was media blasting, which involves shooting a gritty material through an air gun at the wheel’s surface, adding texture to the paint for the tire to grip.

2014-Chevrolet-CamaroZ28-THUMB2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 officially goes on sale. The car will be offered in five distinctive exterior colors – Red Hot, Black, Silver Ice Metallic, Ashen Gray Metallic and Summit White; as well as one available option package which includes air conditioning and a total of six audio speakers.

It is no secret that this Camaro has been optimized aerodynamically and has achieved a lap on Nürburgring road course that was four seconds faster than the Camaro ZL1. Another factor that plays crucial role in these terms is the power of the Chevy which comes from the 7.0L LS7 engine.

The petrol unit generates 505 horsepower (376 kW) and 481 lb-ft of torque (652 Nm) and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The power is distributed to the rear wheels via a Torsen limited-slip differential that includes a helical gear set in order to achieve optimal traction.

2014 Camaro Z/28 is fitted with race-proven, spool-valve dampers. They allow four-way damping control, greater damper stiffness without a significant change in ride quality. Other changes regarding the chassis include stiffer spring and bushing rates for better cornering response.

19-inch forged aluminum wheels and Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires in size 305/30ZR19 is what also gives the Camaro the exceptional qualities of a fast and furious car. To fully exploit their grip, the Z/28 also features Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix rotors and fixed, monoblock calipers.
