    2020-Toyota-Corolla1

    For 2020, the Toyota Gazoo Racing UK team in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) has engaged D2H Advanced Technologies to provide them with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling in helping to develop the BTCC Corolla’s aerodynamic performance. The virtual analysis suggested the results have saved 0.75 seconds per lap across a variety of circuits, and the car has been a challenger for the lead in the second meeting of this year’s delayed season.

    The manufacturer-backed team, run by Speedworks, approached D2H in December last year to help develop the Corolla after its inaugural season, where Tom Ingrams took it to 6th in the Championship. Buckingham-based D2H, a company with considerable experience in high-quality CFD and aerodynamic analysis, started work in January this year with a data from a vehicle scan, and completed bodywork was delivered, two days ahead of schedule, in mid-March.

    “Speedworks knew there was significant potential for aero performance improvement after the 2019 season and approached us to undertake complete analysis, design, and bodywork manufacture in a very short timeframe,” said Chris Hebert, D2H aerodynamics engineering director. “We used a combination of ANSYS solver and in-house D2H software to boost resolution and shorten timescales. We’ve found our approach is highly effective, and it enabled us to deliver on time for Speedworks.”

    Over the past few years, D2H has been challenging the perception of effective CFD being expensive and time-consuming when developing external aerodynamic performance. Hebert explained: “Unfortunately high-resolution CFD is often seen as a very expensive option which can eat up time, whereas more affordable CFD alternatives are frequently unable to provide useful results. Our strategy from the start has been to develop methodologies and systems which enable high-quality CFD within tight deadlines.”

    D2H has been using ANSYS CFD software for a number of years. “We view ANSYS as being the fastest, most accurate CFD solver on the market while offering us the broadest options,” Hebert continued. “But this is only part of our strategy – we’ve also developed our own complementary software such as CAD-Check to give us control of the process while crucially enhancing both speed and quality of the analysis. Our high level of quality versus the cost of the process is at a ratio not seen elsewhere in the market, and routinely surprises new clients.”

    D2H’s CAD-Check software rapidly checks CAD data for viability and ensures higher precision results and fewer downstream delays from CAD errors. Hebert says it’s been an important factor in delivering Speedworks bodywork on time: “Days of engineers’ time can be saved by deploying CAD-Check versus a more trial and error approach, and there’s no requirement for CFD engineering input – the process can be driven solely by aero engineers.”

    Another key element in D2H’s strategy is the use of far larger mesh sizes which, in this case, are 20 times larger than those used by key rivals. “Like a high-resolution photograph, our use of increased mesh size gives us significant accuracy improvements. This enables us to analyze specific areas in greater detail, crucial when seeking incremental improvements in aerodynamic performance,” said Hebert. “The end result for the Corolla is a 0.75 seconds reduction in average virtual lap times when tested over a number of UK circuits, which has translated into immediately improved race performance now that the delayed season is underway.” The Corolla, again driven by Tom Ingram, currently lies fourth in the championship after a strong second place at Brands Hatch.

    The Speedworks team believe they chose the perfect aero partner. “D2H was able to offer us a combination of accurate CAD source data, high-quality CFD coupled to aero design, and an ability to manufacture the resulting bodywork design, all within a very tight timescale,” explained Christian Dick, team principal. “This end-to-end process was the ideal solution for Speedworks, enabling us to advance the Corolla’s performance in advance of the 2020 season. The results speak for themselves, and we can’t wait to get it on track at the next meeting at Oulton Park!”

    “CFD is an extremely valuable and cost-effective tool when it is used at high resolution in conjunction with relevant, time-saving systems,” concludes Hebert. “D2H’s strategy of using our own D2H processes and software combined with ANSYS CFD has proved to be an extremely successful formula both in motorsport and wider automotive applications.”

  • 2012 Toyota BTCC Race Cars

    Toyota has announced their line-up for the new season. The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship begins this weekend and the manufacturer will take place in it with independent racers Frank Wrathall, Tony Hughes and Adam Morgan.

    The new race car is based on the latest update of the British-built road-going Avensis, introduced late last year. Like its showroom sister, the race car is produced at Toyota’s Burnaston factory in Derbyshire, making it a very British contender in the country’s most popular national racing championship.

    The exterior is slightly changed by restyling the front, a fresh look at engine installation and cooling, and has also helped them improve chassis stiffness.

    Dynojet’s Wrathall is hoping to build on the dramatic late-season form he showed in 2011 and believes the off-season works carried out in the team’s Lancashire workshops will make all the difference.

    “The developments we have made will allow us to move on to the next level,” said the 25-year-old from Garstang, last season’s Rookie of the Year.”, he said.

    “I hope it will mean that we can be regularly fighting for the podium. That is my aim, but of course the opposition will be strong and everyone else will be out to do the same thing.”, Mr. Wrathall added.

    Frank scored four podium results in 2011, the best of them a second, and three Independents Trophy wins on his way to championship 12th. His sterling efforts have been recognised by the British Racing Drivers’ Club, which has awarded him SuperStar status for the coming year.

    The newest recruit to the Toyota ranks is 23-year-old Adam Morgan, who won his place on the BTCC grid thanks to his victory in the Ginetta Supercup – the richest prize in British motorsport, worth in excess of £200 000.

    Both the Speedworks Toyotas are powered by the 2-litre ‘spec’ engine developed by BTCC organiser TOCA.

    This year’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship starts and finishes at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, and between those 1 April and 21 October events will visit the Donington Park, Thruxton, Oulton Park, Croft, Snetterton, Knockhill, Rockingham and Silverstone circuits on its round-Britain tour. All 30 races will be screened live, with a minimum of six hours on ITV4 and ITV4 HD from each meeting, simultaneously broadcast on the itv.com website.

  • BTCC: Donington Park race

    James Nash is the new leader in Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. Droitwich’s Neal won yesterday’s first race with his turbocharged Team Honda Racing Civic. . Second and third were the Vauxhall Vectras of Pirtek Racing’s Jordan and 888 Racing with Collins Contractors’ Nash.

    Jason Plato crashed his Chevrolet Cruze, when he went off the track at 193 km/h (120mph). The car stroke a barrier and rolled three times. It is a pure miracles for Plato, who got out of the car unharmed. However, the Cruze was destroyed in seconds.

    “It was amazing. It looked an impossible task and the car looked like a Transformer. But the lads were just amazing – you could see the passion in everybody.” commented Jason.

    “They’re the best racing team in the world, forget F1. That was teamwork. I had tears in my eyes, they had tears in their eyes and to see their commitment makes up for all the bad weekends we’ll ever have. There was real emotion out there today.”, he added.

    Still, in just 90 minutes, RML crew had repaired the car and Jason Plato rewarded them with an emotional 6th place.

    There were a lot of punishments, too.

    – Race 1, Andy Neate, officially reprimanded and 2 penalty points on his competition licence;
    – Race 2, Tom Chilton and Gordon Shedden, both officially reprimanded and 2 penalty points;
