  • Everything You Need to Know About the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster and Boxster S

Porsche 718 Boxster and Boxster S Together They are here: 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster and Boxster S have been finally revealed! Besides their new name, they seem to be more powerful and more beautifully looking than ever before! Porsche has proudly announced that they have gained more than 35 horsepower and up to 36 percent more torque! The fuel economy improvements are of up to 14 per cent; the cars also feature revised exterior, updated brakes and suspension and more advanced technology.

With the change in the name (the number 718), Porsche pays tribute to the flat-four cylinder engines that were used in the mid-engine Porsche 718 sports car. The latter was a price winner and received many accolades in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

So at the heart of the model, there is the newly developed, turbocharged flat four-cylinder engine. Depending on the variant it is with different displacement. Here are all details you need to know about 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster and Boxster S.

    The Flat-Four Cylinder Engines

    • 718 Boxster

The 718 Boxster is driven by the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine, which produces 300 hp (220 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, available from 1,950 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Significant gains in acceleration are due to these changes: the 0-90 mph sprint now happens in 4.5 seconds, which is 0.7 seconds faster than the previous model. The top speed is limited at 170 miles per hour, which happens to be 8 miles per hour faster than before.

    • 718 Boxster S

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster S is equipped with the 2.5-litre engine, which generates 350 hp (257 kW), and its greater power is boosted by the utilization of a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. In terms of Newton meters, this car develops 419 Nm (309 lb-ft) of torque 1,900 rpm to 4,500 rpm. This means that the Boxster S is capable of reaching 60 mph 4.0 seconds, which is 0.5 seconds faster than its predecessor. Another difference is that top speed of the 718 Boxster S is 177 miles per hour – 5 miles per hour faster than previously.

Both models come with standard six-speed manual transmission, while the fuel-saving Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is offered as an option.

Sharper Exterior Design But Minor Changes Inside

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster S Exterior front View

In terms of design there are changes that need to be addressed. The front is now wider and more muscular, features larger cooling air intakes and redesigned Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED DRLs. LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights come as an option.

The sides of the models include new style for the wings and side sills, larger air inlet panels with two fins, and the doors come without door handle recess covers. More prominently however stand out the 19-inch wheels on the 718 Boxster S.

The back of the 718 Boxsters highlights the new width, dude to the strip with integrated Porsche badge between the taillights. Speaking of which, they feature three-dimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights.

Unfortunately, the interior hasn’t been changed so much. There are minor updates on the elements of the instrument panel. The biggest benefit of the cabin is that tit now features Porsche Communication Management (PCM) as a standard. PCM includes cell phone preparation, audio interfaces and the 110 watt Sound Package Plus. Optionally, the system can be improved with a navigation module including voice control, or a Connect Plus module featuring extension of the navigation module.

    Greater Agility

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster Rear view

Greater agility means sportier suspension tuning and calibration. In fact, 718 Boxster’s suspension was entirely retuned and as a result it delivers better cornering performance. In addition, the electric steering system is 10% more direct than previously, thus increasing agility, precision and maneuverability.

Options for 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster and Boxster S

    • PASM

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) comes as an option here. It includes a ten millimeter lower ride height, and for the 718 Boxster S the millimeters are 20. What is more, the retuned active suspension, delivers an even broader spread between long-distance touring comfort and dynamic responsiveness.

    • Sport Chrono Package

Sport Chrono Package has been created for those of you who want engaging driving experience. It features Individual program in addition to the three standard settings: Normal, Sport and Sport Plus. Those 718 Boxsters that will be equipped with PDK, will get a Sport Response Button with this pack. • Porsche Announces New Names for its Mid-Engine Sports Cars

Porsche 718 Cayman Teaser Yes, that’s right. Everybody’s favorite Cayman and Boxster has new names. The two cars will be introduced in 2016 as Porsche 718 Boxster and Porsche 718 Cayman. If you wonder what the 718 designation stands for, well it is a reference to the ground-breaking sports car of this type of the year 1957. Back in the days this car enjoyed much success in renowned car races.

There have been released two sketch teasers of the models, to announce the name change. What we see and what Porsche confirms is that the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will share more similarities than ever: both visual and technical. The luxury company says that in the future they both will be equally powerful and will have flat four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engines with turbocharging. And, unfortunately for some, the roadster will be positioned at a higher price level than the Coupé, which will mimic the case for the 911 models.

SEE ALSO: Porsche Announces “Green Light” for the Electric Mission E

In details, the 718 model series is a continuation of the proven four-cylinder concept. The latest example is the technological front-runner for production cars, the 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car, The highly-efficient, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with just 2 litres of displacement, finished first and second in the 24 hours of Le Mans. It also won the manufacturer’s and driver’s championship titles in the WEC World Endurance Championship. This has opened new horizons for the future sports car engines from Porsche.

    The History Behind 718

    Porsche 718 Boxster Teaser

The four-cylinder flat engine has many car racing victories and a very long tradition at Porsche. In the late 1950s, the 718 was introduced as a successor of the legendary Porsche 550 Spyderc. It was one of the best competitors at races such as 12-hour race in Sebring in 1960 and 1958 – 1961 European Hill Climb Championship. And in fact, the 718 took first place between 1959 and 1960 at the legendary Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily, and a class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1958.

And all of these facts make us really excited and anticipating.

  • Surprisingly Similar: What Happens When We Compare 2016 Miata to a 2015 Boxster?

2016 Mazda Miata vs 2015 Porsche Boxster2016 Mazda Miata and 2015 Porsche Boxster are two vehicles, which are famous for its origin, heredity, immense performance capability and compact dimension. But what happens when we compare both and how different is the Miata from the Boxster? Mazda has just released an Infographic displaying a parallel between the cars and you can view it below. It gives a good comprehension of how the one is different from the other.

Of course, even without the image, the first thing that pops-up in mind is the pricing. There is huge price difference between those two. The Miata is actually more than 50% of the cost of the Porsche. However, the Mazda is also as capable as the Boxster and it covers more than 90% of its performance.

SEE ALSO: 2016 Mazda Miata MX-5 Comes With Upgraded Set of BOSE Audio System

In addition, both cars have a very similar 0 to 60 time, quarter mile times and braking distances. But while the new Miata has a smaller 2.0L 4-cylinder engine than the Boxster’s 2.7L flat six, it only trails the Boxster by 0.3 seconds in a race from 0-60. Even more, Miata beats the Boxster in terms of fuel economy.

Another advantage of the Mazda is the power to weight ratio. It is almost unbelievable that it is considerably higher than the Boxster (14.9:1 vs 10.9:1). Thanks to it, the Miata runs the quarter mile in 14.6 seconds, which is only 0.6 seconds slower than the Boxster.

SEE ALSO: Porsche Boxster and Cayman with new Engines In 2016

Surely, Porsche’s braking performance is superior. Boxster’s braking distance is evaluated from 70 to 0 (158 feet vs 145 feet). However, Miata’s curb weight is nearly 500lbs lower. This keeps the brake distance within 10% of the Porsche’s performance.

Well, Porsche is always a Porsche and when we buy one, we are always counting on the prestigious name and all that comes along with it. But we have to admit that Mazda has done something amazing with the 2016 Miata. In other words, the specialists have created a car that is very similar and even comparable to a much more expensive car like the Boxster. How cool is that?

Don’t forget to take a detailed look at the Infographic below. It gives a lot of insights for the similarities between both two models.

  • Porsche Boxster and 911 Carrera Black Editions Get Detailed

Porsche 911 Carrera and Boxster Black Editions have been shown for the first time more than two weeks ago. Now it is time for the exclusive car company to reveal some more of the cars by releasing additional pictures. They immediately grabbed my attention, as I am sure they will with yours, too.

I find the combination of all-black exterior and interior is fantastic. The aim of Porsche was to emphasize the timelessness and elegance of the models. Both Black Editions are built around the same philosophy and share many features in common. For instance such are the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with navigation module, rain sensor, cruise control, Sport Design steering wheel and automatically dimming rear-view mirrors.

    Posche Boxster Black Edition

Starting with the cabriolet Boxster, it powered by the standard 2.7 litre flat engine which generates 265 hp (195 kW). The car is distinguished by its black treatment, but also by its exclusive features.

The interior can show-off with two-zone air conditioning and heated seats, as well as a Sound Package Plus. The soft top and rollover protection bar have been also made black.

  • Porsche Boxster and Cayman with new Engines In 2016

For those who are missing an update in Porsche’s Boxster and Cayman GTS, we have good news … or not that good, actually. The models were introduced last year in March and since then there was nothing significant going on around them. We got here and there some exclusive tunings, but it is not like the officially released statement that both cars will be getting four-cylinder turbo engines.

Back in March we understood that the (current for now) Boxster and Cayman GTS range is powered by a 3.4 liter flat-six engine, which generates no less than 330hp (243 kW) for the Boxster and 340 (250 kW) for the Cayman. The torque is 370Nm (273 lb-ft) and 380Nm (280 lb-ft), respectively. In addition, both cars got the Chrono package as a standard.

SEE ALSO: Porsche Cayman GT4: Designed to Impress

With these numbers the Boxster is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, while the Cayman is a little bit faster: it covers the sprint in 4.6 seconds. Top speeds are of 281 km/h (175 mph) and 285 km/h (177 mph), respectively.

So, what’s the problem here? Obviously, Porsche is considering these numbers too much. Given that there are new EU emission standards, Porsche’s CEO, Matthias Müller, said that from the beginning of 2016 the cars will be available with turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engines.

The possible and rumored displacements are to be 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre. But, there is no need to cry, because the flat-six will be still available for enthusiasts.

  • Porsche Macan and Boxster – Auto Express Awards

2015 Porsche Macan has been rewarded by Auto Express New Car Awards. It won in the category – Best Compact SUV, while the sporty Boxster received the Best Roadster Award – for the third year in a row.

The Macan is the first Porsche to enter the compact SUV segment and combines the typical handling characteristics like excellent acceleration, braking and extreme agility. The fast crossover also boasts a nice steering precision as well as a high level of comfort and everyday suitability.

“Turn into a corner and the Macan responds with the same athleticism and poise as the mid-engined Cayman….Better still, you get the same perfectly-weighted controls that fizz with feedback. Amazingly, the Porsche is as capable off the beaten track as on it. The permanent four-wheel drive serves up near-unbreakable traction. Yet none of these remarkable dynamic feats comes at the expense of the Macan’s abilities as a desirable family runaround.”, commented Auto Express editorial team.

On the other hand, Porsche Boxster boasts a unique lightweight body, charismatic flat-six engines, sharp chassis responses and evolutionary yet utterly distinctive styling. It defines what an open-top sports car should be. Core to its enduring appeal is the mid-engined layout that delivers poise and balance combined with precise, agile handling.

“There are few cars we’d choose to go for a cross country blast in ahead of the Porsche Boxster. It has poise and power by the bucketload, yet it’s also tremendously comfortable to use as a daily driver. Best of all, for the performance on offer it’s seriously good value.”, the editorial team clearly agreed.
