BMW is going to offer the 2014 X5 and 2014 4-Series Coupe with several new engines. In November, another three variants will be added to the 4 Series Coupe, while the new X5 will get the new power units in December 2013.

2014 BMW 4-Series Coupe will be offered with an entry-level 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine – 184HP (135 kW) – for the 420i model. It will join the 430d which will produce 258HP (190 kW) and the 435d with 313HP (230 kW). The powerful model comes exclusively with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an xDrive all-wheel drive system (an option for 420i and 420d).

The BMW Sport Line and BMW Luxury Line packages already introduced will be joined by the BMW Modern Line, whose distinctive exterior and interior touches shine a particularly strong spotlight on the Coupe’s progressive looks. The stand-out features of the BMW Modern Line include bespoke light-alloy wheels, Aluminium satinated design elements, the colour shade Oyster for the seat surfaces, lower section of the instrument panel and roof liner, a sports leather steering wheel and variable-colour ambient lighting.

    2014 BMW X5 is going to get sDrive25d & xDrive25d with a TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel that develops 218 HP (160 kW). There will be also a X5 xDrive35i model with 306HP (225 kW) and a X5 xDrive40d with a six-cylinder diesel – 313HP (230 kW).

Among the attractive new additions to the equipment offered by a host of BMW models are the latest new features in the BMW ConnectedDrive range. Enhancing safety and comfort, for example, are the new Traffic Jam Assistant and fully automatic BMW Parking Assistant, which will be introduced in the BMW 5 Series in November this year and in the new BMW X5 in December.

  • BMW Concept X5 Security Plus Offers Enhanced Protection For Occupants

BMW-Concept-X5-Security-Plus-THUMBAlong with many other concepts BMW will be presenting at the Frankfurt Motor Show the third generation of a Security version based – the BMW Concept X5 Security Plus. This vehicle is the only one in its class which fulfills the requirements of protection level VR6.

The car delivers all-round protection against violent assault, kidnapping and organized crime. BMW Concept X5 Security Plus combines effective occupant protection and generous comfort with the dynamic performance, agility and versatility.

The vehicle is built around an armored passenger cell which was constructed from steel moldings and panels. And in order to prevent a penetrating bullet or fragment the car includes sealed joints in the critical areas around doors or where panels adjoin body pillars.

Of course, there is also a security glass which was especially made for such protection. Inside of the glass there is a special treatment of polycarbonate coating. Furthermore, this BMW is equipped with the powerful 450 hp (330 kW) V8 petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Based on a regular BMW X5 production model, this concept features a modified chassis, electronic management systems and brake system, which have been adapted to the enhanced vehicle weight. Another advantage of the BMW Security model is the discreet integration of security features. This means that BMW Concept X5 Security Plus does not differ visually from a regular production model.

Of course, this Concept model also delivers the same comfort and convenience of the regular one. It features ergonomic design, spaciousness and choice of optional equipment. Here an Intelligent Emergency Call system is standard, but there are also extensive communication and information features and wide range of driver assistance systems optionally available. Other options for this model are the LED strobe lights in the radiator grille, roof beacons with a siren system and an auxiliary battery.

  • BMW X3 xDrive28i and BMW X5 M Sport Edition

BMW has announced the X3 xDrive28i, which is powered by the new twin-turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with superb power and torque. The manufacturer will also launch the M Sport Edition of the BMW X5 aimed to satisfy the most demanding customers of the luxury SAVs.

Furthermore, the choice of optionally available driver assistance systems featured by BMW ConnectedDrive is being further extended for the BMW X3.

2012 BMW X3 xDrive28i boasts 245PS (180 kW) and incredible 350Nm (258 lb-ft) at just 1250RPM meaning that pressing gas pedal, your body will be pressed to the seat immediately. The technology package employed in this engine comprises a supercharging system operating according to the Twin Scroll principle, High Precision Injection with direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and double VANOS variable camshaft control.

The performance suits more to a sports car from medium class, instead of a crossover – 6.7 seconds to 100 km/h, which is 0.2 faster than the predecessor model. The fuel consumption is also cut to 7.5 liters per 100 km in the EU test cycle and a CO2 emission level of 175 g/km.

The new power unit comes as standard paired with ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. The intelligent four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive with electronically controlled and variable power distribution between the front and real wheels provides optimum transfer of torque to the road and off-road terrain.

Moreover, in future, all BMW X3 model variants will be equipped as standard with the Driving Experience Control feature. At the press of a button located on the centre console next to the gearshift lever or gear selector lever respectively, the driver is able to vary the vehicle setting. There is a choice between the “COMFORT”, “SPORT” and “SPORT+” modes as well as the ECO PRO mode. Driving Experience Control has an effect on the settings of the stability control function DSC, the characteristic maps of the accelerator pedal and Servotronic power steering and, depending on how the vehicle is equipped, also the gearshift characteristics of the automatic transmission and the control map of the Dynamic Damper Control system.

    2012 BMW X3 xDrive28i

In the spring of 2012, the BMW X5 model range will be boosted by a M Performance Automobile, which in addition to a 383PS (281kW) diesel power plant with innovative three-stage turbocharging, also features an M-specific suspension setting and a particularly impressive and aerodynamically optimised design. Simultaneously with the market launch of the BMW X5 M50d, the new M Sport Edition will be offered for all further model variants. It contributes effectively towards a further enhancement of the supremely powerful and agile characteristics of the Sports Activity Vehicle, thereby also emphasising its visual qualities.

The M Sport Edition comprises M exterior features for optimising air guidance, 20-inch M light alloys including tyre mix, BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, Xenon lights (standard on the BMW X5 xDrive50i and the BMW X5 xDrive40d) and Adaptive Cornering Headlights. The BMW X5 xDrive50i is also equipped with pneumatic rear wheel suspension including automatic levelling. For all other model variants, the M Sport Edition offers a sporty suspension setting.

The sporting ambience in the interior is emphasised by the M leather-clad steering wheel with shift paddles, BMW Individual anthracite roof lining, BMW Individual interiors trim strips in black piano lacquer, doorsills boasting the M logo, stainless steel pedals and the M footrest for the driver. The M Sport Edition also includes electrically adjustable sports seats. The new M Alcantara/Black Nappa leather combination is available exclusively in conjunction with the M Sport Edition.

Over and above that, the range of special equipment for the BMW X5 will in future also include the optional heated steering wheel in conjunction with the M leather-clad steering wheel. From the spring of 2012, the colour variant Orion Silver metallic will be available as a new exterior paint finish.

  • BMW M performance 2012

2012-BMW-M550d-xDrive-thumbA new range of BMW bets on an electric driving experience at the expense of a few litres of Diesel. Say hello to the BMW xDrive 5 series, X5 and X6 M-performance specs. By “M-Performance”, BMW actually mean “Not quite M cars but they are out there”. All three vehicles harbor a magnificent 3.0 L game changer and all have been developed by BMW M GmbH engineers.

Despite the obvious lack of flaring wheel arches, road sweeping side skirts and flamboyant tail pipes that give the M niche its identity, there are design alterations on each and every one M-Performer. The wing mirrors for example are air-flow friendly, there’s a trunk lip-spoiler on the sedan and the wheels are a batch of specially designed, M-Performance alloys. (19-inch, double spoked ones for the sedan and the Touring, 19-inch, V-spoked for the X5 and 20-inch double-spoked for the X6). Above all we still have the M branding on the door steps and on the steering wheel, on the gear stick and at the boot lid.

But on that boot lid we notice something else. Why the “550” and also why is there a ‘d’ at the end? Before we start judging let’s clear some things up – the l6, 3.0 L TwinPower Diesel unit is an engineering milestone. You get 280 kW/381 hp and the mesmerizing 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft) of torque available to you after only a 2000 rpm climb. Three turbo chargers, two small ones countering the turbo lag and a big one for maximum boost, will work together for that ever crisp throttle response. Sounds more like “TripletPower” to me. Another oily bit that deserves some spotlight is the latest common rail injection system with maximum pressure capacity at 2200 bars. With it power extraction is more efficient then ever.

    BMW M550d xDrive (2012)
    BMW M550d xDrive (2012)

Needless to say all that newfound power is rather useless if one doesn’t know how to tame it and put it on the road. That’s where the blokes at BMW M GmbH step into place once again. Eight speed automatic gearboxes come with all the M-Performance cars and an intelligent xDrive AWD system overseers the chassis which is bound give dynamics a new name. M pedigree can be seen throughout the tuning of the suspension, the body, engine and transmission mounting, springs and dampers, all standard and optional chassis control systems, and the Servotronic mapping for the hydraulic steering. The touring and the X 5 and X 6 get air-suspension as standard on the rear axle which benefits comfort and practicality. Then there are the road safety systems and the luxury toys that can make anybody’s head spin.

    BMW M550d xDrive Touring (2012)
    BMW M550d xDrive Touring (2012)

At the end of the day, It always comes down to the 0 to 60 mph sprint. And thanks to all the M strains, the M 550d xDrive sedan does the job pretty well – 4.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). In the mean time the Euro 6 3,0 L engine returns an average fuel consumption: 6.3 litres/100 kilometres on the Euro cycle and CO2 emissions amounting to 165 g/km. The Touring does the sprint for 4,9 and consumption and exhaust is by an inch higher. The more heavy X 5 and 6 M50d‘s underscore on the 0 to 60 time but are still very, very brisk when one remembers that those things weigh two tonnes and above: 5.4 seconds for the X 5 with 7.5 litres/100 kilometres in return and 5.3 seconds for the X 5 with 7.7 litres/100 kilometres. Put into perspective those figures are stunning, wonderful and sensible. Will this be enough to convince the public that oil burners have a future in a world of petrolheads?

As you may suggest, this will be extra option and probably, it will cost some money. (more…)
