  • BMW at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed

BMW has recently introduced the eagerly awaited BMW M5 F10, which will be exhibited at the The Goodwood Festival of Speed 1-3 July 2011. The new car will make its UK debut in the BMW pavilion along with a selection of the Bavarian manufacturer’s hottest current cars and some famous racing cars celebrating anniversaries from its glorious past.

M5 F10 is powered by a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 with staggering 560PS at 5750RPM and 680Nm at just 1500RPM. It features M TwinPower Turbo technology, twin-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and a cross-bank exhaust manifold.

0 to 100 km/h takes 4.4 seconds and to 200 km/h just 13 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). However, the previous M5 was capable of doing more than 200 mph, so this will be faster. The car is equipped with 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic and Efficient Dynamics technology, including engine Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration. The fuel consumption is amazing – 28.5 mpg and CO2 emissions – 232g/km.

M5 F10 is priced at £73 040 and it will be available in the UK in November 2011.

Other cars, which will be exhibited at the motor show are BMW Z4 GT3, BMW 328 and M3 E92 GTS.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is being held from 1- 3 July 2011. Representing BMW Group UK will be Martin Harrison, Media Relations Officer.

  • BMW 328 Hommage

The BMW 328 is considered the most successful and best-looking sports car of the 1930s. That’s why the manufacturer has revealed the 328 Hommage, which had its official debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este near Lake Como, Italy last weekend.

The car is based on the Vision Connected Drive Concept revealed in Geneva, but 328 Hommage is a modern version of the classic sports car. It boasts lightweight construction featuring carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The curb weight of the vehicle is just 780 kg (1720 lbs).

The exterior features vertically positioned double kidney grille imitates the slim, vertical kidney design of the early BMW models. The headlights are very interesting, too. Their round shape is reminiscent of the headlamps featured on the BMW 328.

BMW 328 Hommage follows in the footsteps of the M1 Hommage, which was revealed in 2008. However, the new model didn’t get so much attention.

The interior boasts a lot of elements derived from motor racing.

“With the BMW 328 Hommage, we wish to pay homage to the passion and inventiveness of the fathers of the BMW 328”, commented Karl Bäumer, CEO of BMW Group Classic.

“They created an icon, which is considered a milestone in the history of the automobile.”, he added.

The BMW 328 Hommage translates the principles and the character of the vehicle of that time into present times and offers a possible interpretation of how the designers of that time, Fritz Fiedler and Rudolf Schleicher, might have built the BMW 328 in the present day using current technology.

  • 1936 BMW 328

An iconic BMW model has celebrates its 75th anniversary. BMW 328 built between 1936 and 1940 laid down a milestone in automotive history and was the most successful sports car of the 1930s on the racing scene.

This model combined everything that a race car needs – agility, acceleration, reliability and lightweight construction.

BMW 328 has decent performance and it is fast even now. The car weighs just 780kg and the engine develops 80PS. The top speed is 155 km/h, so it was one of the quickest cars around. However, only 464 units are ever made, so the BMW 328 is today one of the most sought-after collector’s items on the market. 328 appeared to be the best visually appealing sports cars of the pre-war period as well as the most successful racing machine in Europe.

BMW 328 made its race debut on 14 June 1936 (Sunday). 34 runners were listed in the sports car category of the International Eifel Race. The sound rumbling to the surface through the bonnet’s two leather securing belts indicated the presence of a six-cylinder unit producing maybe 80 or even 90 horsepower.

Around 200 units have survived from 30s to nowadays. Around 120 are in Germany and many still take part in historical races to this day. In 2003 Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustav teamed with Prince Leopold of Bavaria for the reborn Mille Miglia – now run as a regularity test – in a BMW 328 Touring Roadster.

To be reminded of just how tough and rigid the 1940 cars still are today, you need only witness their journey to Italy for the event. They don’t need a transporter or trailer, instead, just as they did 70 years ago, they travel from Munich to Brescia on their own power. And even more impressively, they complete the journey on a single tank of fuel.

The drivers and cars are able to encounter a wide variety of weather conditions en route to Brescia and during the event itself, but nothing can dampen the spirits of the drivers and cars alike.

Real spirit, real drivers, real cars!
