We are sorry, but has the world ran out of wheels? This is the third time in the last five days that we encounter the flamboyant Oxigin-Oxrock 8,5 x 20s along with the accompanying spinning covers. At the very least, this time they don’t seem to ruin the overall vista of the car in question. No, everything else does.
What you see here is the newest (post-facelift) Audi R8 V10 Spyder that’s been tricked out by Regula Tuning. This is not their first time when they’ve butchered an R8. Don’t get us wrong, it doesn’t look that bad. Over the top and vulgar with those scarlet red accents for sure, but still kind of cool-looking. The biggest problem we have with it, however, is the pretence that it is something that it is clearly not. Besides the carbon-fiber bodykit (consisting of a front and rear apron and side skirts) and the wheels, there don’t seem to be any other features that differentiate it from the stock R8. You still get the same 525 hp Lambo-sourced V10 and the standard suspension setup.
Nobody’s trying to dispute the Audi’s original performance here, but one has to be able to walk the talk, right? If you look like a Nürbergring thoroughbred on track days, you need to be able to leave your opponents trailing behind, not just intimidate them with a virtually non-existent ground clearance and paper-thin tires. Out on the streets, on the other hand, you’ll need to do countless recalculations of your route on the satnav since you obviously won’t be able to clear the speed hump that’s spanning before you.
Amazingly, though, the most striking thing about the Regula R8 is the price – $9,400. Worth it?
The tuning experts of B&B Automobiltechnik have lately devoted their selves to the development of an upgrade for the top model of the current R8 series. This Audi model was introduced to the market in the past year and features a powerful V10 engine.
Speaking about the unit, it can produce the exhilarating 550 horsepower (405 kW) and 540 Nm (399 lb-ft) of torque. Nonetheless, this wasn’t enough for the tunes and they have raised the standards via a three-stage performance boost.
First, the performance and torque was boosted to 595 hp (438 kW) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) in the “small” Stage One. The Second Stage gives the R8 610 hp (449 kW) 570 Nm (421 lb-ft). At last, the final upgrade Stage Three is called “BB R8 M20/3” and boosts the V8 up to 628 hp (462 kW) and 585 Nm (432 lb-ft). All this power is transferred onto the road via the 7-gear S-tronic double clutch transmission.
Other modifications that unfold this power were also done, for instance on the ignition and injection system as well as the intake channels and air ducts. In addition, also installed were the B&B’s racing exhaust system made of stainless steel and B&B carbon special air filters.
Of course, these upgrades can only lead to better on-road performance. The four-wheel racer accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and beats the magical 10-seconds sonic barrier in 9.6 seconds in the 0-200 km/h sprint. The top speed is 328 km/h.
B&B racing chassis that is adjustable from 20 to 40 millimeter was combined with light alloy wheel rims of size 9×20 on the front axis and 11×20 inches on the rear. The latter were matched with rubber rollers of the dimension 235/30R20 and 305/25R20 in front and rear, respectively.
Autocar has published a nice video comparing Audi R8 V10 Plus S-Tronic and Ducati Diavel Carbon Version. Although, the bike has more than twice better power-to-weight ratio, it will be interesting to see, how these two make 0-240-0 km/h.
First, Ducati Diavel Carbon Version is powered by a 1.2 liter two-cylinder 90 degree v-twin engine with 162HP (119 kW) at 9,500RPM and 127Nm (94 lb-ft) at 8,000RPM. The curb weight is 234 kg, which makes 692HP per ton (power-to-weight ratio). Other highlights are ABS, 8-stage traction control, 6-speed manual gearbox and 240 section rear tire. The price is £16,750.
The Audi R8 V10 Plus S-tronic is powered by a 5.2 liter naturally aspirated V10 with 542HP (399 kW) at 8,000RPM and 537Nm (398 lb-ft) at 6,500RPM. The curb weight is 1,595 kg making 340HP per ton (power-to-weight ratio). Other highlights are ABS, traction control, 4WD, 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and 295 section rear tires. The price is whopping £127,575.
Dragtimesinfo has released video with their top three in category Super Cars for 2012. The third place is took by one of our favourite super cars – Ferrari 458 Italia. The second place belongs to a tuned Audi R8 V10 Stage 2 and the winner is Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera.
Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.2 liter V10 with 570PS (419 kW) at 8000RPM and 540Nm (398 lb-ft) at 6500RPM. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, to 200 km/h in 10.2 seconds and the top speed is 325 km/h (202 mph).
The Audi R8 V10 5.2FSI has 525HP (386 kW) and 530Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque. 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph). However, the car in the video is boosted to 600HP meaning that it is a lot faster and closer to the mighty Gallardo.
The 458 Italia is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.5 liter V8 with 570PS (419 kW) at 9000RPM and 540Nm (399 lb-ft) at 6000RPM. This means the incredible 127 PS/liter from a naturally aspirated engine. Furthermore, the sports car is 1380 kg, so it has power-to-weight ratio of 2.42 kg/hp. 0-100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph).
The new Audi R8 range is now equipped with faster S tronic twin-clutch sports transmission. In addition, complementing the range is the new lighter and more powerful V10 plus model.
In fact the S tronic twin-clutch sports transmission delivers quicker gear shifts and enhanced sprinting ability. This one replaces the R tronic automated manual option and is offered as an alternative to the acclaimed six-speed manual gearbox with its open stainless steel gate. The twin-clutch S tronic transmission can make its rapid fire shifts via the selector lever or the steering wheel paddles.
Another highlight of the R8 range is the new design detailing and all-LED lighting across the board. Most important update however is the version of the V10 Coupé – which generates the amount of 550 horsepower.
2013 Audi R8 Coupe
Furthermore, the integration of the new 7-speed S tronic transmission has lowered CO2 emissions by up to 22 grams/km, and in V8 and V10 Coupé and V10 Spyder versions it has also improved the acceleration time from 0 to 62 mph by three-tenths of a second.
In particular, the 4.2-litre V8 FSI engine generates 430 hp (316 kW) at 7,900 rpm, and has a maximum torque of 430 Nm (582 lb-ft) between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm. The acceleration here from 0 to 62mph is 4.3 seconds and the top speed – 186mph.
On the other hand the R8 V8 Spyder in manual and S tronic forms takes care of the sprint in 4.5 and 4.8 seconds respectively. The top speed in both cases is 186mph. Next, the V10 engine generates 530 Nm (718 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm, and peak power of 525 hp (386 kW) available at 8,000 rpm. The acceleration time here is 3.6 seconds and the top speed is 195mph.
2013 Audi R8 V10 Plus
The new Audi R8 V10 plus develops 550 hp (405 kW) and maximum torque of 540 Nm (731 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm. This version sprints from 0 to 62mph in 3.5 seconds and achieves a top speed of 197mph when linked to S tronic transmission.
Moreover, ll-LED headlights are now standard on all variants of the Audi R8. They go along with new strip-shaped daytime running lights. The latter form a ‘clasp’ around the lens. The light-emitting diodes for the high and low beam headlights have been positioned above and below the daytime running lights and serve as indicators.
Enhancements have been done to the interior as well. A new R8 badge appears on the gearshift or selector lever, in the door sill trims, in the instrument cluster and in the start screen of the on-board monitor, on the flattened rim of the leather-covered multifunction sports steering wheel.
The instrument cluster is transformed as well, and at the same time the centre console, the surround for the radio/navigation system and the handbrake lever are also now covered with delicately stitched leather.
As standard equipment here is featured the following: all-LED headlights, new design 19-inch alloy wheels, Audi Music Interface (iPod connection), satellite navigation, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation and heating for their Fine Nappa Leather-upholstered sports seats.
Good news. Audi are refreshing their R8 range and are also adding a version which from now on will be the scoreboard leader. It’s the Audi R8 V10 Plus with a new deliciously clever 7-speed S tronic gearbox.
Let’s first talk about all the changes that have been made to the range. A new front bumper that underlines the innovations in the headlight department. By innovations we mean an extensive use of LED technology. Besides the daytime running lights, diodes emit the high and low beams. Optionally a carbon fiber reinforced plastic front splitter can be installed for that extra something. At the back the diffuser has been restyled alongside the R logo.
Under the engine cover, the choice of engines pretty much remains the same. There seems to be however, a bit of a jolt when it comes to power. The 4.2 FSI engine that goes in the Coupe and Spyder V8 models now produces 430 hp and just as much Nm of torque between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm. The 5.2 FSI V10 version of these cars stands now at 525 hp and 530 Nm. All seems very proportional. The highlight here however is the acceleration. Provided that the cars are with the new 7-speed S tronic, the 4.2 Coupe will cross the 62 mph mark in 4.3 seconds, the 4.2 Spyder – 4.5 seconds. The 5.2 Coupe and Spyder (again with the new gearbox) will do that in 3.8 and 4.1 seconds.
The real highlight however is the now fastest R8 of them all. Despite being called the Plus, it’s not a plus size lady. In fact, because of the lightweight bucket seats and wheels and ceramic brakes and the scarce use of insulation, the Audi R8 V10 Plus – which is strictly a Coupe – weighs only 1,570 kg. Ten kilograms more than the 4.2 V8 Coupe. Consider the freshly squeezed 550 hp from the 5.2-liter V10 and also the 540 Nm that come along, and you have yourself a super car that can reach 60 mph from a stand still in just 3.5 seconds (S tronic again). Being a quattro, there should be no remarks on the handling whatsoever (no more than 30% of the torque goes to the front wheels so you get some tail-happy action as well).
Audi R8 V10 Plus (2013)
On the outside, one can recognize an Audi R8 V10 Plus by the black exhaust tips, front splitter, funnier looking air vents, the rear diffuser and mirror caps. It’s 19-inch black gloss wheels with widths of 8.5 and 11 inches are subsequently coated in 235/35 and 295/30 tires respectively.
That speed hump on the road there is actually an AudiR8 V10 that has underwent a substantial modification by XXX Performance. And don’t worry, that toxic green shade is actually foil wrapping. Unfortunately, the same is true for the “carbon-fiber” mirrors…and side blades…and wheels.
Let’s talk about the wheel housings. Or more specifically, the lack of them. It’s not that the wheels are tremendously big (Dunlop SP Sport Max 235/30R20 front and 295/25R20 back tires on 20-inch Oxigin 14-Oxrock rims). The bigger factor here is the air G-Ride system of the new H&R coilover kit which can lower the car ridiculously close to the ground. Other then than, the whole body has been brushed off of it’s badges, the head and taillights have been darkened and a strip of foil on the windshield reads “XXX Performance”.
Most excitingly however, XXX Performance have fiddled with the management system of the Audi’s 5.2 FSI V10 engine, added a BMC carbon air-box and and a high-end sports car exhaust system with Bluetooth flap control system from Capristo. The end result amounts to 650 hp and an appealing sight within the engine bay because of all the carbon-fibery bits inside.
Inside you get restyled Audi RS seats, carbon-fiber arm supports, leather and plushy Alcantra pretty much everywhere and white white seams.
Audi has unveiled a special edition R8 V10 Spyder, which will be auctioned at at this year’s White Tie and Tiara Ball. The car features stunning mirror-like chromed finish and brutal V10 engine.
“Sir Elton John’s fundraising ball really is a golden ticket event that is as glamorous as it is hugely effective in fundraising terms,” commented Jeremy Hicks, Director of Audi UK.
“We are delighted, and enormously proud, to support it for a ninth year with the donation of what is arguably our most fittingly glamorous model,” he added.
Audi R8 V10 Spyder is powered by a 5.2 liter V10 with 525HP (386 kW) and 530N/m (393 lb-ft) of torque. 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.1 seconds and the top speed is 312 km/h (194 mph).
