  • Giulia GTA put through paces by Alfa Romeo racing Orlen f1 drivers

    2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA1

The Alfa Romeo Racing – ORLEN Formula 1 drivers, Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi, participated in a day of real-world tests on the new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm at the famous Balocco Proving Ground, fine tuning parts developed in collaboration with Sauber engineering.

The priceless technical know-how of Sauber Engineering
The Giulia GTA project benefits from the long-standing partnership with Sauber Group AG and leverages the know-how of its engineering and aerodynamics divisions. Alfa Romeo entrusted Sauber Engineering with the production of most of the carbon fibre components in the GTA and GTAm, especially those with an aerodynamic impact. These include the new front bumper, the side skirts, the diffuser, the GTA spoiler and the GTAm aerowing.

Sauber boasts 50 years of experience in motorsport, including 27 in Formula One, and is one of the few F1 teams with its very own wind tunnel. The facility, located in Hinwil, Switzerland, is one of the most advanced in Europe, equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Aerodynamic research from the wind tunnel has been used to hone components for the Giulia GTAm, including the wing appendages and fully faired underbody. The manually adjustable front and rear wings on the GTAm have been developed to adapt the car’s aerodynamic performance to any kind of track or road, at the request and preference of the driver.

The GTA and GTAm also benefit from a new diffuser capable of increasing the car’s downforce, guaranteeing excellent grip at high speeds. On the Giulia GTAm, the high-downforce aerodynamic configuration is able to deliver an impressive lift coefficient, twice as much as the GTA and an astonishing three times that of the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which already sets the benchmark in its class.

The benefits of this collaboration have ranged from engineering, rapid prototyping and finally to the production of these specialised components.

F1 know-how working on the GTA project
The F1 drivers utilised the “Autodelta” workshop, the historical Alfa Romeo racing department, before testing the cars to their limits and providing feedback to the engineering team. All Alfa Romeo sports cars have undergone development and testing at Balocco since the 1960s.

As shown in the exclusive video shot at Balocco, on the historic circuit known as the “Alfa Romeo Track”, world champion Räikkönen and young Italian Giovinazzi worked closely with the engineers, focusing on technical suggestions to optimise aerodynamics and handling. To complete the fine-tuning of the GTA and GTAm, the F1 drivers analysed the changes made to the car and gave an account of their impressions on the track, resulting in a joint assessment of the effects on vehicle dynamics.

Giovinazzi offered tips on the car’s setup, paying special attention to the new carbon fibre components and the new technical solution adopted for the wheels with a single locking nut. “It is great to see the improvements we made to the cars today”, Antonio Giovinazzi said at the end of the test session.

Räikkönen worked with the aerodynamics department on the new appendages added to the new adjustable front splitter and to the new manually adjustable rear wing. He also examined the overall balance delivered by these new components, along with the diffuser and the underbody fairing, concluding; “I find them a perfect mix of everyday use and track use”.

    The inspiration: 1965 Giulia GTA
The revived Giulia GTA is technically and conceptually inspired by the 1965 Giulia GTA, the “Gran Turismo Alleggerita” developed by Autodelta, based on the Giulia Sprint GT which had triumphed in races all over the world. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA limited edition is derived from the Giulia Quadrifoglio, equipped with an upgraded version of the 2.9-litre V6 Bi-Turbo engine, now with 540hp. In GTAm guise it benefits from a weight reduction of 100kg, giving it an astonishing power-to-weight ratio of 2.82kg/hp.

  • Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider Will Compete at the Dolomites Gold Cup

Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport SpiderYou might know, that  Dolomites Gold Cup back in 1947 was won by  Salvatore Ammendola behind the wheel of Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS. This year’s edition, staged from 23 to 27 July will witness the same vehicles, that were competing between 1947 and 1956. And of course Alfa Romeo team will also make appearance. Something more, the Italian brand will be a protagonist of the 2015 edition with the superb “1900 Sport Spider” from 1954.

To be admitted to the event, all vehicles must have been constructed between 1919 and 1961. But there are some exceptional vehicles in certain categories, constructed between 1962 and 1965. Why? Because they will have something special in their construction or because they possess particular historic interest. Just imagine the sight. The mountain roads of Dolomites, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, along with some of the most famous and beloved retro vehicles. How cool is that? In fact, the area is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It will surely be a magical sight to see such vehicles on such a track.

Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider and what it has to offer

    Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider

Now, let’s see what makes 1900 Sport Spider so special. The vehicle comes from the renovated Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese and recently won the “Best Car in Show” prize in the “Experience” dynamic competition. This was during the trials for the “XXIV Cesana-Sestriere Avvocato Giovanni Agnelli Trophy”. The vehicle itself comes with a “1900” dry sump DOHC 4-cylinder engine, that produces a total of 138 hp (101 kW) and reaches a top speed of 220 km/h (122 mph). Its weight is just 800 kg and comes with nicely done aerodynamic body. The 1900 SS’s engine is paired with a 5-speed transmission and a De Dion rear axle: this helps the vehicle to demonstrate some wonderful performance, along with incredible flexibility.

But along with the historic Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS, there will be and another eye-catchers, that are indeed the latest Giulietta and the 4C Spider. The first one, the Giulietta is a compact sedan, that proudly demonstrates the well-known Italian elegance, while the second vehicle is brand’s ultimate expression of style and motor excellence.

What else can we say? This will be an incredible and beautiful event, that every motorsport fan should see.

  • Alfa Romeo MiTo and Giulietta – Intelligent All-Wheather Control

Alfa Romeo has presented their innovative D.N.A. system, which features an All-Weather driving mode for tackling some of the most wintery road conditions.

The intelligent Vehicle Dynamic Control is fitted on both Alfa MiTo and Giulietta ranges with drivers able to select from ‘D’ (Dynamic), ‘N’ (Natural) and ‘A’ (All-Weather) driving modes at the simple touch of a switch.

In AW (All-Weather) mode, the ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) system monitors tyre grip and the car’s yaw and the steering angle. Whenever is required, the system decreases the throttle opening and applies the brakes to individual wheels to maintain stability. It works the same way as BMW’s DSC (Dynamic Stability Control).

The VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) system becomes more intrusive, ideal for situations where wheels are on both snow and tarmac, a Mµ-Split control function enables the car to find traction and control simultaneously on two completely different road conditions. This all works in conjunction with the DST (Dynamic Steering Torque) feature that provides steering torque movements to prompt natural correction of oversteer. Finally, Hydraulic Brake Assistance also increases braking pressure, therefore reducing braking distances in an emergency.

“Innovations such as the Alfa D.N.A. system help make Alfa Giulietta one of the safest models in its class with a 5-star Euro NCAP rating including an 86% score in the Safety Assist category. We think it’s a great choice all year round, but it’s also the smart choice in these tough winter months when drivers rely more on their vehicle’s technology to keep them safe and in control.”, commented Damien Dally, Head of Brand, Alfa Romeo UK.

  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta with TCT Transmission

Alfa Romeo UK has announced the full specs and price list for the 2012 Giulietta TCT.

The Alfa Giulietta is a 5-door hatchback offering cheap and stylish ride. The car is the safest car in its class. It also features award winning MultiAir engine technology, five star Euro-NCAP safety ratings, Alfa Romeo’s unique D.N.A system, and now, in 2012, the technologically advanced ALFA TCT semi-automatic transmission becomes available in the Giulietta range. 2012 Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCT starts at £21 855 OTR.

There are two trim levels – Lusso or Veloce, and two engines: 1.4 TB MultiAir 170HP and 2.0 JTDM-2 170HP diesel.

The TCT transmission offers sporty driving pleasure and reduces the fuel consumption a lot. The transmission works in either all-automatic or sequential mode, as required by the driver. The user can manually manage the up and down position of the accurate, ergonomic shifter, with which steering wheel shift paddles may be combined. In addition, the driver can customise the car’s dynamics using the Alfa D.N.A. driving selector to enhance its features of comfort, performance, safety and efficiency.

The 1.4 liter TB MultiAir engine has 170HP enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 184 km/h (135 mph). The fuel consumption is great – 54.3 mpg UK with 121 g/km CO2.

The 2.0 liter JTDM-2 diesel with 170HP is slightly slower – 7.9 seconds to 100 km/h, but the fuel consumption is better – 62.8 mpg UK with 119 g/km CO2.

Alfa TCT uses dry clutches allowing, in addition to other advantages, natural integration with Start&Stop, a function which is not always available with traditional automatic transmissions, and which guarantees a further benefit in terms of fuel consumption, particularly around town.

Lastly, a Wet automatic transmission requires approximately 4.8 litres more gearbox oil than a Dry version, again for reasons of clutch cooling. In this way, weight is added and losses are incurred due to an increase in splashing caused by the gears. When all these effects are combined, a Dry transmission, like the Alfa TCT, is found to be approximately 6% more efficient than the corresponding Wet one in terms of consumption.
