2016 Audi S5Since 2007 the world of mid-size sporty cars is not the same. • The newest Audi A5 and S5 are already here and there’s a lot to be excited about

Audi S5 front viewAudi A5 and S5 Coupes have just made their world premiere at company’s headquarters in Ingolstadt. The event was celebrated with a spectacular 3D light show in which both of these cars demonstrated their sporty elegance and new capabilities. The new design of the models is visible at first glance. In addition, Audi has made thorough revisions to the interior and have added more standard and optional technology features.

The first big change is that the Audi A5 and S5 Coupes are now with two-doors only. They also carry the sportiest proportions in the car segment they are positioned: 4.67 meters (15.4 ft) long and 1.37 meters (4.5 ft) high. What makes the A5 even more distinctive are the wide, flat Singleframe, the Matrix LED headlights, the wavelike side lines and the flared wheel arches. Bringing it closer to the racing heritage are the exterior mirrors are placed on the door top shoulders.

Furthermore, the modes also include entirely revised steering features, greater torsional rigidity, newly designed suspension with damper control and by far the best aerodynamics and aeroacoustics compared to any of its predecessors.

    Audi A5 front view

In terms of power, there are two TFSI and three TDI engines, with outputs ranging from 190PS to 286PS. They are up to 17 per cent more powerful and as much as 22 per cent more efficient than before. A six-speed manual transmission drives the front axle, but there is an option to equip the Audi with seven-speed dual clutch transmission or eight-speed torque-converter transmission. The latter is offered on the A5 for the first time. If one wants an all-wheel drive car then they should opt for the quattro drive system, which is optional.

At the top of the range is positioned the S5, powered by the V6 engine, which produces 354 hp (260 kW) and 500 Newton meters (368.8 lb-ft) of torque. This sends the speedometer from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 4.7 seconds! What is more, due to the addition of S sport suspension, the S5 sits even closer to the ground.

    Audi S5 inteior

The inherent power of the model is highlighted within trim’s exterior: there is an S5 logo with a red rhombus on the flanks, grille and tailgate. The same logo is also found inside: on the welcome screen on the MMI display, the chrome trim and door sills.

Speaking of the interior, the highlights here are the seats with massage function and the steering wheel heating, the three-zone climate control, the electrically extending and retracting seat belt feeders, 3D sound system and a large, panoramic glass roof.

The latest variants of Audi A5 and S5 Coupe have just rolled-off the assembly line and will be available on the market this fall.

  • Wald International’s Sportsline Package is Ready to Adorn the Audi A5 Sportback

Wald-Audi-A5-Sportback-Sportsline-THTUMBEarlier this year, Wald International released an aggressive body kit for the Audi A5 Sportback. The Japanese company prepared back then a “Black Bison” tuning kit, giving the S trimmed car a new look for the front air intakes. In addition to this, Wald International also supplied this Audi with a chin spoiler, side skirts and inserts for the front and rear fenders. We can not miss the wheels, nor the lowered suspension or the shadow-line black trim.

But … this was only a preview. Until now, because the tuners has finally released the official and full tuning of the car. And it simply looks breathtaking!

Let’s see what happened. Obviously, the exterior of this hatchback received a new front spoiler, the side skirts were refined and a rear bumper insert was added. If that’s not enough, Wald International has prepared for the capricious customers trunk-mounted spoiler stainless steel exhaust tips and exhaust system.

And we definitely dig the design scheme of the exterior. As you can see it is based on three colors: aggressive red, black and white as a basis. The red and accents are featured on the rear skirts, side steps, front half spoiler and the trunk spoiler.

Oh, just take a look at the multispoke red wheels fitted with low-profile tyres. The hood and roof is decided in black, so that the sporty appearance of the car can look more convincing. No changes or whatsoever have been made to the interior or engine. Because this is a Sportsback, best case scenario is that it is driven by the 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 engine boasting 329 hp (242 kW) at the least.

  • Rieger’s Audi A5 Sportback Bringing The RS Spirit

Rieger-Audi-A5-Sportback-shadowRieger-Audi-A5-Sportback-mediumLook at what we stumbled upon. It’s a pre-facelift Audi A5 Sportback. And hey, it’s been touched up by Rieger! Say hello to a tuning program that involves quite a few visual upgrades and some performance tweaks.

Initially, we were a bit perplexed. Looking at the front grille, someone said, “Hold on a minute. Sportbacks don’t come in RS form” Nope, they don’t. Rieger offer front bumpers and grills that basically belong to the RS. The Sportback has also been treated by some new side skirts and a rear apron. There’s still space, though, for the four custom exhaust tips which measure at 115x85mm each.

H&R sports springs bring the whole body closer to the ground and leave very little space below the wheel arches. That’s also partly because of the are humongous wheels: 10.5×21 in a beautiful design and tires with a barely visible profile (Dunlop Sport Maxx GT 275/25 R21).

Because this is a Sportsback, best case scenario dictates that  it bares a 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 boasting 329 hp at the least. Because Rieger have also thrown in an RS braking system, we are inclined to think that someone might have amped the power a bit, but we don’t really know for sure.

  • 2012 Audi A5 Sportback 2.0 TDIe – Price £27 320

Audi has announced two new TDIe engines, where the “e” means efficiency. The manufacturer will hit the market with A5 Coupe and A5 Sportback powered by 2.0 liter TDIe engine with two outputs – 136PS (100 kW) and 163PS (120 kW). The price is very competitive, too – £27 320 OTR for 2012 Audi A5 Sportback 2.0 TDIe with 136PS.

The performance is not too bad and the car is perfect for everyday drive – 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 212 km/h (132 mph). The impressive is the fuel consumption – 64.2 mpg according to the official combined cycle test and emission of 117 g/km CO2.

    The 163PS is slightly faster to 100 km/h – 8.7 seconds with better top speed 220 km/h (137 mph) and a little more thirsty – 62.8 mpg with 118 g/km CO2.

Last, in the Coupe variant, the 163PS engine accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph) with fuel economy of 64.2 mpg with 115 g/km CO2.

All cars have 6-speed manual gearbox.

In both Sportback and Coupe models all the four-cylinder TDI engines can be combined with a new, highly cost effective SE Technik specification. For just £1 000 on top of the SE model for Sportback and £500 for Coupe, it adds DVD SAT NAV, Audi Music Interface (AMI) iPod connection, the Audi Parking Plus system with front and rear sensors and cruise control.
