SR Auto Group is responsible for the stylish change

The super-expensive Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar just had a design boost delivered by the specialists at SR Auto Group. What I like so much about them is the fact that they make everything effortlessly and eventually deliver great-looking cars. And even more, they do this with simple measures, like adding only perfectly chosen wheels or add-ons that not interfere in a bad way with car’s overall design.

So, basically the Porsche 918 Spyder model stands at the forefront of modern technology and innovation. It actually does more: shows that a hybrid hypercar can be a display for what future could be.

The vehicle itself is driven by a V8 petrol engine, which generates a total of 608 hp (447 kW) and two special electric motors, that gives additional 129 hp (95 kW) and 156 hp (115 kW) respectively. To do the math for you, this makes a total of 887 hp (652 kW). The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is measured at 2.5 seconds, while the top speed is 385 km/h (214 mph). Crushing force, isn’t it?

The change done by SR Auto is not big but gives a fresh take on the Porsche. It now rocks a good set of wheels: forged two-piece PUR RS23.M2 sized at 20-inches. They feature more subtle finish and feature gloss black diamond face with a matching inner barrel. Respectively big tires are also at hand.

  • Supercar Hybrid Technology found in Porsche 918 and BMW i8 to be Available to Mass Market

BMW i8sGKN Driveline will be responsible for bringing the hybrid technology from cars such like the Porsche 918 Spyder and BMW i8 into affordable compact vehicles, and this announcement fires up an excitement in us. The reason for this important and future changing step is that the company has developed an eAxle module, which will help C-segment cars to be produced as plug-in hybrids, thus offering improved performance and CO2 reduction. And this of more than 50%.

The vision of GKN is to make the eAxle technology and thus the plug-in hybrids a simple upgrade for consumers and manufacturers. This was inspired by the success of company’s systems included in the hybrid sports car programmes and premium SUVs. And now it is time to launch the eAxle technology in a much broader range of vehicles.

SEE ALSO: BMW to Produce Limited Series of i8 Protonic Red Edition

The eAxle is an upgraded variant of the system GKN designed for the Porsche 918 Spyder. With its single-speed design, the powertrain has minimized weight to just 20.9kg but at the same time this improves efficiency, installation space and costs. In addition, there is also a two-staged geartrain with a gear ratio of 12.5, which delivers up to 200Nm torque and 65kW power. All of this is available in all electric mode. In addition, the electromechanically actuated dog clutch disconnects the electric motor at higher vehicle speeds, while an open coupling minimizes rotating losses when not operating. Noise emissions are minimal due to the precise engineering of the gear teeth.

    GKN Powertrain

Let’s make a comparison. If we have a typical C-segment plug-in hybrid, it would probably produce around 100kW. But if it were equipped with the GKN eAxle, it could have additional 65kW of electrical power. Furthermore, the Axle improves the 0-100kph acceleration times by several seconds, and at the same time provides CO2 emission rating to less than 50g/km.

If the hybrids are with front-wheel drive platform, then they ca integrate GKN’s compact, lightweight single-speed eAxle modules into the vehicle’s rear assembly. In this way they will provide a combination of plug-in hybrid and electric all-wheel drive functionalities.

And this makes us excited; because we are all striving that our planet is a better and cleaner place.

  • Porsche 918 Spyder – 887 HP and 800 Nm

Porsche 918 Spyder combines pedigree motor racing technology with excellent everyday utility, and maximum performance with minimum consumption.

It is powered by a 4.6 liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 608HP (447 kW) and 530Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque. There are also two electric motors with 156HP (115 kW) and 129HP (95 kW) at each axle (front and rear). The maximum combined output is 887HP (661 kW) and over 800Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph). The 918 Spyder managed to lap the Nurburgring in just 7 minutes and 14 seconds.

The sports car has five available driving modes, which can be selected through the steering wheel. These are E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap.

In E-Power, the car is able to operate only on electricity, but still it is very fast 0-100 km/h in under 7 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). It can travel up to 30 km (18.6 miles) on electricity alone

In Hybrid mode, the electric motors and the combustion engine work alternately to maximize efficiency. The Hybrid mode is typically used for a fuel economy-oriented driving style.

In Sport Hybrid mode, the combustion engine operates continuously and provides the main propulsive force. In addition, the electric motors provide support in the form of electric boosting or when the operating point of the combustion engine can be optimised for greater efficiency.

Race Hybrid is similar to Sport Hybrid mode, but it allows the engine to recharge the battery, when the driver is not using the maximum output. Electric power is thus available even with several very fast laps.

The Hot Lap button in the middle of the map switch releases the final reserves of the 918 Spyder and can only be activated in “Race Hybrid” mode. Similar to a qualification mode, this pushes the traction battery to its maximum power output limits for a few fast laps. This mode uses all of the available energy in the battery.

If the battery is depleted, it can be recharged within 4 hours using a 230V outlet.

Other nice technology is a Porsche Active Aerodynamic system that has three modes to provide optimal downforce.

The Porsche 918 Spyder can be outfitted with a Weissach package, which adds a race car inspired exterior including visible carbon fiber on the roof, mirrors and windshield. The package also reflects to the interior – Alcantara upholstery, carbon fiber trim and six-point seatbelts. Last, but not least are the lightweight magnesium wheels fitted with ultra-performance tires.
