  • Chevy Volt Costs Less but has More Technology to Offer

The great news from Chevrolet continues. This time it does not involve the Camaro but the more mainstream Volt model, which is currently going on sale. With the production of the second generation model Chevy is aiming at new customers of the ever-expanding electric plug-in family. The good news here is that the price of the car is lower than that of the pervious generation with more than thousand dollars.

But this does not compromise on the values and technology added in the car. As a matter of fact, the vehicle is equipped with more features than ever, and this makes it even more attractive. In addition to this, the next-generation Volt will also deliver the ability for a longer drive between gas fill-ups.

To go further into details, Chevrolet announced that it has estimated that drivers who charge regularly can expect to cover more than thousand miles between fill-ups. This basically means that the 2016 Volt will also offer great fuel economy. It has been rated at 102 MPGe on electric and 41 combined mpg on gasoline power.

Another interesting fact is that the Volt can cover up to 50 miles solely on electricity within a single charge. This is actually 31-percent improvement over the first-generation model.

Speaking of pricing, this of the new generation Volt begins at $33,995 USD. As mentioned, this is almost $1,200 USD less than the first-gen variant. This will definitely urge many of us to go more “eco”, wouldn’t it?

  • 2016 Chevrolet Volt: Sneak Peek

It is finally here, people! Instead of waiting for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week when the 2016 Chevrolet Volt is going to be revealed, General Motors chose to depict its new electric hybrid earlier at CES.

For now all that we have is a visual glimpse of the new model, without any official specifics. Nevertheless, the automaker has promised that the 2016 Chevy Volt will be equipped with an improved steering system and refined acceleration. Moreover, it is said that the noise and vibration levels have been reduced significantly.

Additionally, the electric hybrid will be fitted with a bigger battery pack that has been the result of the collaborative work with LG Chem. The battery can store about 20 percent more despite the fact that it is 13 kg lighter.

In relation to the exterior, what we can clearly see from the image is the reworked nose of the car. The front fascia is characterized by upper and lower grills which are accompanied by updated LED daytime running lights and well-shaped headlights.

  • 2016 Chevy Volt to offer easier charging

    2016-Chevy-Volt_thumb2016-Chevy-Volt_651

Electric cars have many benefits – a simpler chassis, fewer internal parts, no harmful emissions and more but people worry about being able or not to charge their cars when such a need arises. Chevrolet knows this very well and that’s why the new 2016 Chevy Volt will offer easier and more user-friendly charging.

“Chevrolet used the real-world experiences of today’s Volt owners to make the charging process simpler and more convenient in the next-generation Volt,” said Andrew Farah, chief engineer for the Volt. “The new Volt will give owners greater flexibility for charging it on their terms.”

The new car comes with improvements when it comes to recharging the battery and checking the battery level. There are three major new features that customers will get to enjoy – GPS location-based charging, new and more intuitive charge status indicators and portable cord enhancements.

The GPS location-based charging will allow owners to set their charging preferences exclusively for their “home” charging location and the vehicle will automatically adjust to that setting when it is at that location. The car will recognize when it arrives “home” based on GPS data. This will allow owners to pre-set their charging level (8 amps or 12 amps on 120V only) and whether they wish to charge immediately, set a departure time for each day of the week, or set a departure time and a utility rate schedule to charge only at off-peak rates. Owners can input their local utility’s rate schedule into their Volt to assure they’re charging using the cheapest electricity rates. They will only have to program the system once and the Volt will return to these settings every time it is at its home location.

The new and more intuitive charge status indicators make it easier for owners to confirm that their Volt is charging and to see what the status of the charge gauge is. The new status system features a specially designed tone that indicates when charging has begun, with additional tones for delayed charging. It will even indicate if the charge port door was left open after unplugging but before entering the vehicle. Moreover, if you glance through the windshield you can see an updated charge status indicator light on the on the top of the instrument panel to show the approximate charge level through a series of flashes.

The portable cord set enhancements include a new 120V portable cord set that incorporates a cord that is nearly 25 feet long, which is longer than the current 120V portable cord. It can be locked using a small padlock to deter unauthorized removal during charging. Based directly on customer feedback, a new storage bin for the cord is now located on the left side of the Volt’s rear cargo area, above the load floor, for improved accessibility.

Excited about the new 2016 Volt? Then have some patience – the car will debut in January at the North American International Auto Show.

  • 2016 Next-Generation Chevrolet Volt Debuting in 2015

General Motors let slip some very interesting details on the next-generation 2016 Chevrolet Volt in a recent press release. The next-generation Chevrolet Volt which is to make its premiere in 2015 is said to feature an all-new Voltec extended range electric vehicle (EREV) propulsion system which will achieve maximum productivity and efficiency. Moreover, the Voltec system will also offer better EV range and fuel economy for complete driving convenience. The Voltec system includes: new battery, drive unit, range-extending engine and power electronics.

The improved battery system will be able to store more energy, precisely, the storage capacity will be increased by 20 percent on a volume basis with fewer cells (the number of which is reduced from 288 to 192). In fact, the new Volt battery back is slightly smaller and lighter (with a mass decreased by virtually 30 pounds or 13 kg). Theoretically, with the 20 percent storage volume increase, its capacity would be about 20 kWh.

Similar to the battery system, the drive unit is upgraded in a way that is directed towards better performance and efficiency. There is a two-motor drive unit which generates roughly from 5 to 12 percent more efficiency and is 100 pounds (45 kg) lighter than the system which is currently operating. What is more, the two motors which work together deliver 20 percent improvement in electric acceleration and boosts the performance even more.

Finally, the old engine is replaced with an all-new, high-efficiency 1.5L 4-cylinder engine which runs on regular unleaded fuel. The new Voltec range extender has a variable displacement oil pump, direct injection fuel system, cooled exhaust gas recirculation and high-compression ratio of 12.5:1.
