  • Chevrolet Premieres Malibu Generation Nine

Chevrolet Malibu Side View2016 Chevrolet Malibu is the main highlight at General Motors’ stand at the New York Auto Show. The new model is entirely redesigned and can show-off with a host of exclusive features like the new connectivity and safety systems. Not to mention the enhanced efficiency due to the new hybrid powertrain. The eco-friendly technology was taken directly from the Volt model and then adapted to the needs of the larger car. Precisely, the estimated combined fuel economy is more than 45 mpg. To compare this number, the standard 1.5L turbo unit is rated at 37 mpg highway.

Other very important aspect that contributes to the great efficiency is that the car is nearly 300 pounds (136 kg) lighter than before. It is also longer with four inches (101 mm) and these two facts result in more space for the occupants.

To go further into details, Volt’s 1.8L four-cylinder engine is combined with two-motor drive unit. The total output is 182 horsepower (136 kW). The unit is also equipped with Chevy’s Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery (EGHR) which works by utilizing the exhaust heat to warm the engine and cabin. The electric power comes from the 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which can drive the Malibu alone up to 55 miles per hour (88 km/h). Regenerative braking system is also present.

As a standard, the Malibu comes with the brand new Ecotec 1.5L turbo unit, rated at 37 mpg on the highway. It produces 160 horsepower (119 kW) and 184 lb-ft of torque (250 Nm). If one looks for a higher-output, then Chevy has prepared for them the 2.0L turbocharged engine, which generates 250 horsepower (186 kW) and 258 lb-ft of torque (350 Nm), and has fuel efficiency rating of 22 mpg and 32 mpg in the city and on the highway, respectively.

There are a lot of technology features in the new Malibu regarding infotainment and safety that can usually be found in GMC models. The most interesting on is the Test Drive feature which comes as a standard and supports safe driving. It does this by muting the audio if any of the occupants haven’t put their seatbelt on.

The ninth generation Malibu is going to be offered in four trim levels: L, LS, LT and Premier and will also have a Hybrid version. More on the model and the specific trims is to be announced close to production. And can you believe that the first ever variant of the Malibu has been produced back in 1964?

  • Tested to the Limits: 2016 Chevrolet Malibu [VIDEO]

The next generation Chevrolet Malibu is obviously making a big furore out there, since the company had to reveal a video and more information about it prior its official release. This will happen at New York Auto Show on 1st of April as you already know. The 48 seconds film shows how Chevy has tested the limits of Malibu to make sure that the sedan has literally no boundaries.

This happened in a very interesting way with the help of data collection boxes that were placed in various cars around the world. They collected real-time data of the road conditions, and in fact since 1972 these devices have recorded the frequency of the road, recording how the car handles various types of obstacles.

After all the collected data was analyzed, the engineers have estimated what damage can be created on the car over running into 150 000 miles of potholes and other hazards. The next step was to mimic these conditions on a home-built road with simulated obstacles, where the car had to drive hundreds of times.

But this is not all of the testing. There were also driving on open roads, in harsh weather conditions as well as stationary and dynamic tests. The benefit: we will probably get a more reliable and durable Malibu. Watch the video to make sure of that. 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will have a market launch by the end of the year.

  • Is this the Next-Gen Chevrolet Malibu?

Yes, it is! And this is the first official picture we have so far. Designed for the 2016 model year, the car is scheduled to make a global debut at the New York International Auto Show. Chevrolet did not say much, but what we got as information is sufficient to please our ears. The new Malibu is made to be more efficient than its predecessor due not only to better engine but also to the fact that it will be around 300 pounds lighter.

For this weight loss is responsible the implementation of the higher-strength steel structure. In turn, this will not only lead to better economy but also to improvements of handling.

In addition, this totally new architecture will be 4 inches longer than the outgoing model. Of course this also contributes to an increased cabin space and more importantly – to more leg room for the front and rear occupants.

Other enhancements will be included throughout the interior, so we do expect some luxury treatment like leather, nappa or Alcantara. The confirmed changes so far include connectivity and advanced safety features, which is said to be better than ever.

From what we can tell judging by the teaser, it seems that 2016 Chevrolet Malibu has sleeker profile and more aggressive front. The company said that this is because the front wheels have been moved forward as well as the front and rear overhangs have been minimized.

So are we to see more dynamic and refined model in New York is a matter of time to understand.  No words on engine range too, we will definitely have to wait till the big reveal or few days prior to that if we’re lucky.
