  • Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Achieves 22 mpg on the Highway

2015-Dodge-Challenger-SRT-THUMBIt is no secret that the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the most powerful muscle car ever built. This is due to its 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI Hellcat V-8 engine which produces 707 horsepower. In addition, the unit is mated to the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, which contributes towards the result of 22 miles per gallon for the highway fuel-economy rating, estimated from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Considering the price, output and highway fuel-economy ratings of cars like the Aventador Roadster (700 hp), Aston Marton Vanquish (576 hp) and Mercedes SLS AMG GT (583 hp), Challenger SRT Hellcat carves a special place for itself in the lofty world of high-performance driving.

The unique Hellcat engine benefits from content that is 91 percent new. It is engineered in-house and is designed for optimum durability. It features forged-steel crankshaft which have induction-hardened bearing surfaces, thus offering a capacity to withstand firing pressures of 1,595 psi (110 bar).

The premium-grade, heat-treated aluminum-alloy cylinder heads were improved for thermal conductivity. These are topped by a twin-screw 2,380-cc/rev supercharger which includes integral charge coolers and an integrated electronic bypass to regulate boost pressure to a maximum of 80 kPa (11.6 psi).

Furthermore, there is a separate low-temperature cooling circuit with two air/coolant heat exchangers that is integrated into the supercharger housing and that keeps air temperatures below 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius). At the same time it enables air flow of up to 30,000 liters per minute.

Next, Dodge‘s TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission has 30 percent greater maximum engine-torque capacity than any Chrysler eight-speed transmission. In addition, the  transmission features one additional pinion gear in each of the 1st and 3rd gear sets, and five more clutch-pack disks – two in clutch E and one each in clutches A, C and D. More importantly, what makes the gearbox so special is the 7.03 ratio spread. It enables the powerful HEMI Hellcat to operate in its most efficient mode.

When the Challenger SRT Hellcat is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission it achieves highway fuel-economy rating of 21 mpg. The sporty gearbox has an internal cooling pump and vehicle-mounted (external) oil cooler and its 258-mm heavy-duty clutch affords easy access to HEMI Hellcat’s exhilarating power.

  • 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat – 635WHP [video]

K&N Air Filters has published a video on Youtube showing the real power of the epic Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. The fastest and most powerful muscle car in the world has even more horsepower than officially stated. It has been put to dynotest by Motor Trend team and showed amazing 635WHP (467 kW) and 798Nm (591 lb-ft) at the rear wheels, which is 722HP (531 kW) and 914Nm (672 lb-ft) at the crankshaft.

This is “just” 15HP and 34Nm more than the officially stated figures of – 707HP (527 kW) and 880Nm (650 lb-ft) of torque produced by the mighty 6.2 liter supercharged V8 engine under the hood. What is more, the American car manufacturer has recently unveiled the Charger SRT Hellcat, which is the fastest saloon on the planet (non-tuned).

Other nice highlight is that the speedometer stopped at 202 mph (325 km/h), but the revcounter continued to build speed. If we pause the video, when the speedometer is at 202 mph, we can see that the engine is at 5,300RPM. The rev limiter is at 6,000RPM, so at 8 gear the car will be going theoretically with 229 mph (368 km/h).

    Enjoy the video!

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the most powerful muscle car leaving the factory. It will hit the market later this year and will demolish the rivalry. In fact, the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat is a bit more powerful than Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Still, it is a “normal” everyday car, but with a huge racing potential.

2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat is powered by a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 – 707HP (527 kW) and 880Nm (650 lb-ft) of torque. The company previously stated that the coupe will have over 600HP (447 kW), so we expected a bit over, not another 107HP.  It is interesting that for the first time in Chrysler Group history, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine comes standard with two key fobs – red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full power and torque of the car, while the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output of just 500HP (368 kW).

The new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has been redesigned and totally re-engineered to be the most true-to-form muscle coupe on the market. It comes with some performance-enhancing technologies for the exterior and interior. There is also a new TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-new interior inspired by the classic 1971 Challenger.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger and Challenger SRTs are built at the Brampton, Ontario, Assembly Plant and will start arriving in Dodge dealerships in the third quarter of 2014.

  • 8HP90 TorqueFlite Transmission Added To 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

8HP90 TorqueFlite TransmissionTorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmissions are now a substantial part of more than one million vehicles worldwide. Reportedly, vehicles equipped with it, save more than 700 million gallons of gasoline, which is equal approximately to $2.5 billion USD. TorqueFlite transmissions in model-year 2014 Chrysler Group’s vehicles contribute to 19 fuel-economy/driving-range benchmarks across four vehicle segments. In addition, the special transmission also reduces the overall CO2 emissions by more than six million metric tonnes. Now, the company is expanding the availability of the transmission to the 2015 HEMI-equipped Dodge Charger and Challenger lineups.

In 2012 TorqueFlite 8HP45/845RE made its debut as the first eight-speed available outside the luxury market. Back then it was coupled with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 which drove the Charger and Chrysler 300 lineups. Since then, both transmissions have migrated to Pentastar- and HEMI-powered versions of the Dodge Durango, Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee lineups.

In 2015 TorqueFlite 8HP70 transmission will be paired with HEMI-equipped Dodge Chargers, Challengers and Challenger SRTs. Now, the introduction of the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, marks also the introduction of the next member of TorqueFlite transmission family – the 8HP90 high-performance automatic.

    dodge challenger srt hellcat side

The transmissions are fully electronic and their software adapts to the shift patterns of driver’s behavior and driving conditions. Internally, the TorqueFlite includes four gear sets and five shift elements, which include multi-disc clutches and brakes. In fact, only two shift elements are open at one time. The result is reduction of drag losses originating from the rotation of multiple parts.

Another benefit of the new transmissions is that they never requiring oil changes, when subjected to normal driving conditions. In addition, 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 equipped with this transmission, benefits from a thermal management system. It quickly raises engine and transmission fluid temperature, which contributes towards improvement of fuel efficiency by 1.7 percent.
