  • 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 With HPE500 Upgrade

hennessey-hpe500-corvette-shadowhennessey-hpe500-corvette-01Hennessey do not fool around when it comes to sheer engine power. Take the 2014 Corvette C7 for example. With an added punch from the company’s HPE kits, these Stingrays vary in power to up to 1000 hp. A total number of 500 units is planned

This one here has an HPE500 kit which means it is as true to the original as it can be. Still, Hennessey’s work is evident when we look at the stainless steel long-tube exhaust manifolds, and the stainless steel midpipes, the installed high flow catalytic converters, and the engine management system tweak. Thus, the Corvette’s 6.2 L LT1 engine develops 507 hp which is a surplus of 50 hp when compared to outgoing models. Torque stands at 518 lb-ft @ 3,800 rpm. Everything has been trialled and tested by Hennessey themselves (see dyno video bellow).

A few bonus features that come with the HPE500 upgrade are the designating exterior badges, the carbon fiber door sills, premium floormats and serial-numbered dash and engine plaques. Optionally, you can also add some visuals. Fancy a CarbonAero rear lip spoiler? Throw in four H10 Monoblock wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires on them, carbon-ceramic brakes, a Penske adjustable suspension upgrade, custom leather seats and you’ve got yourself a real eye-catcher.

  • Most Efficient Sports Car: 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

2014-Chevrolet-Corvette-THUMBIt is officially announced that the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the most fuel efficient sports car currently being offered on the market. The tests have shown that the Chevy delivers up to an EPA-estimated 17 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

This means that the Corvette Stingray is a true benchmark for modern performance cars thanks to the utilization of technologies which deliver more performance and more miles per gallon. The car is equipped with a seven-speed manual transmission which helps further enhance the fuel efficiency and reflects the average fuel economy.

The default “Tour” mode for instance delivers 28 mpg highway and on the other hand when the car is in a driver-selectable “Eco” mode, it delivers 30 mpg highway. In addition, in those Stingrays which come with the seven-speed manual transmission, the Eco mode enables Active Fuel Management, which disables four of the cylinders for enhanced fuel economy during light engine loads.

For those models which are equipped with the six-speed automatic, the Active Fuel Management is active in all drive modes until the person behind the wheel uses the manual-shift mode through the steering-wheel paddles.

Furthermore, it was announced that there is an 11 percent increase in the highway rating over the previous Corvette. Additionally, the 6.2L LT1 V-8 engine generates 455 horsepower (335 kW), which is a 6 percent increase over the previous versions of the car. The LT1 also delivers 460 horsepower (338 kW) with the available dual-mode exhaust.

What is typical for sports cars with more than 455 horsepower is that they offer significantly lower highway fuel economy estimates. An example is the Jaguar F-Type S which delivers 495 hp (364 kW) and 23 mpg highway while the Audi R8 V10 offers 510 hp (375 kW) and 19 mpg highway.

What is more, the sports cars that deliver more than 29 mpg highway based on EPA estimates usually offer less engine output. The example here is the Porsche Cayman that delivers 30 mpg and 275 hp (202 kW), and the BMW Z4 sDrive28 – with 34 mpg and 241 hp (177 kW).

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe will go on sale this autumn, while its Convertible version will be launched on the market by the end of the year.

  • 2014 Cevrolet Corvette Stingray Rated At 460 Horsepower

The latest SAE certifications have confirmed that the 2014 Corvette Stingray has the most powerful standard engine ever. Namely, the new LT1 6.2L V-8 engine has been rated officially at 460 horsepower (343 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 465 lb-ft of torque (630 Nm) at 4,600 rpm, with the available performance exhaust system.

The Stingray is SAE-certified at 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 460 lb-ft (624 Nm) with the standard exhaust system. These numbers signify that the particular Corvette model has the highest standard power ratings ever. In addition the efficiency that it shows is expected to exceed 26 mpg on the highway.

Therefore, drivers can expect to experience even greater acceleration because the power and torque of the unit surpass many other engines offered on the market. As a matter of fact, at 74 horsepower per liter, the LT1 offers greater power density than the C6 Corvette’s LS3 6.2L engine and even the C6 Z06’s racing-derived 7.0L LS7.

In addition, it also generates torque up to 4,700 with 316 lb-ft available at only 1,000 rpm and 90 percent of peak torque available from 3,000 rpm to 5,500 rpm. This of course results in nothing else but outstanding acceleration at all speeds.

What is more, the official results show that the Chevrolet can sprint form standstill to 100 km/h in less than four seconds. The high power density and efficiency of the engine are due to several advanced technologies such as direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing.

First of all, the direct injection is the main reason for unit’s combustion efficiency. It also ensures that there is a complete burn of the fuel in the air-fuel mixture which is achieved by precisely controlling the mixture motion and fuel injection spray pattern. The same technology also keeps the combustion chamber cooler resulting in higher compression ratio and reduced emissions.

Secondly, the Active Fuel Management is a synonym of cylinder deactivation. It is the first-ever application which helps save fuel by shutting down half of the engine’s cylinders in light-load driving. Thirdly, the continuously variable valve timing is now upgraded and it support the LT1 AFM and direct injection systems. The effect is additional enhancement of the performance, efficiency and emissions.

These three technologies on other hand support the new advanced combustion system. The latter includes new cylinder-head and sculpted piston design, which in turn contributes towards high-compression.

It is also important to mention the other engine features include that play their part here. These are the advanced oiling system with oil-spray piston cooling and available dry-sump oiling, engine-mounted camshaft-driven fuel pump, intake manifold with “runners in a box” design, four-into-one exhaust manifolds based on the design of the LS7 engine, Small Block legacy.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe will be available at dealerships this autumn while its Convertible sibling – by the end of the year.

  • Chevrolet Corvette To Include Brand New Lightweight Smart Material

Corvette-Smart-Materia-THUMBChevrolet is going to debut a brand new lightweight “Smart Material” on the Corvette model. In particular this is a heat-activated shape memory alloy which is going to replace heavier motorized parts.

Since its first appearance in 1953, the Corvette has a six-decade track record for introducing lightweight materials that improve cars performance. Now, the trend is continued, with the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray weighing in 99 pounds lighter than its predecessor.

The latter model is the first vehicle to use the “smart material” – lightweight shape memory alloy wire in place of a heavier motorized actuator to open and close the hatch vent that releases air from the trunk. This allows the trunk lid to close more easily.

But, what exactly are the shape memory alloys? They are usually made of copper-aluminum-nickel or nickel-titanium and can change their shape, strength, and/or stiffness when activated by heat, stress, a magnetic field or electrical voltage. Shape memory alloys “remember” their original shape and return to it when de-activated.

In the latest seventh generation Corvette, a shape memory alloy wire opens the hatch vent whenever the deck lid is opened. It utilizes heat from an electrical current in a similar manner to the trunk lights.

When it is activated the lever arm is moved and opens the vent, allowing the trunk lid to close. When the latter is closed, the electrical current switches off. This allows he wire to cool and return to its normal shape. Unwanted mass is also removed by shape memory alloy. This of course enhances performance and fuel economy.
